Então faça a pergunta – disse.

Carberry guides Hampshire's start

Michael Carberry doubts that his Test career will extend beyond the single cap he earned with England in Bangladesh in March but his current form may persuade the selectors to prove his pessimism to be misplaced

Michael Carberry doubts that his Test career will extend beyond the single cap he earned with England in Bangladesh in March but his current form may persuade the selectors to prove his pessimism to be misplaced. Hampshire’s 29-year-old opening batsman made a hundred in each innings against Durham at Basingstoke last week but played down his prospects of a recall by declaring: “That ship’s sailed.”Elaborating, he continued: “I’m not ruling it out altogether but the way things have panned out, I don’t think I’ll be in an England shirt for the time being. Opportunities might come round again but I’m relying on injuries.”Carberry was overlooked when Eoin Morgan was chosen for the opening Test of the summer against Bangladesh in May and it was that snub that persuaded the left-hander to take the gloomy view that he must be too far down the pecking order to make a recall likely in the immediate future.Yet he was one of the players England selector James Whitaker wanted to monitor on day one here and, while he fell short of adding a sixth century of the season to his recent record, Carberry continued to provide food for thought after another failure for Alastair Cook at Edgbaston. He was foxed in the end by Somerset’s in-form Murali Kartik, whose arm ball he nicked into the gloves of Craig Kieswetter after playing back in anticipation of turn, but had made 71 to help Hampshire battle to 130-2 after being put in on a green pitch. His 68-run partnership with Michael Lumb for the second wicket followed a 62-run alliance with Jimmy Adams for the first, although his co-opener had led something of a charmed life, surviving a chance to second slip off Charl Willoughby only four balls into the day and another at square leg on five two overs later, when Jos Buttler made a rare drop.Buttler had to pull on the wicketkeeper’s gloves for half an hour when Craig Kieswetter went off for treatment on a hamstring problem but England’s Twenty20 wicketkeeper was deemed fit enough to continue and held a catch off Peter Trego as Adams ran out of luck soon after resuming.Lumb looked rather more secure in reaching 42 but then gave a return catch to the impressive Kartik off a leading edge, sparking a mini-collapse for Hampshire from 180 for 2 to 186 for 5.Kartik had 19-year-old Vince groping about in the crease as three deliveries in a row beat the bat before striking with another that went straight on – a beautiful piece of bowling that illustrated that the youngster still has much to learn, for all the fanfares that have accompanied his recent progress.Alfonso Thomas was then rewarded for some penetrative but until then luckless pace bowling when Neil McKenzie was given out lbw despite being well forward, leaving Sean Ervine and Dan Christian to set about rebuilding before heavy rain forced an early finish at a cost of 18 overs. These sides may meet again in the Twenty20 Cup final on Saturday but Kevin Pietersen will almost certainly not feature, despite being made available by England coach Andy Flower. The England batsman regained some form with his 80 in the second Test at Edgbaston but Giles White, the Hampshire coach, confirmed that Pietersen, who has already announced that he will leave the county at the end of the season because he wants to be closer to his home in Chelsea, is unlikely to be picked.Hampshire passed up on picking Pietersen when England released him for a Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Kent last month, explaining that they would rather work on the development of other players with international prospects, such as Lumb, Carberry, Adams and Vince.”I suspect there will be no change in our policy,” White said.Somerset, who have won four of their last six First Division matches to raise their hopes of landing the title for the first time in their history, will overtake Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire at the top of the table with a win in this match.

Newcastle transfer news on St. Juste

Newcastle United have reportedly now knocked on the door to sign Mainz centre-back Jeremiah St. Juste in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Mainz raid?

It appears the Magpies are going shopping on the Rhine, as St. Juste’s centre-back partner, Moussa Niakhate, is also reportedly ‘attracting interest’ from the St. James’ Park faithful, suggesting that they could be looking to raid Mainz this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The pair have indeed formed a formidable partnership together, as the German side currently hold the joint-third best defensive record in the Bundesliga, and so either one of them would certainly strengthen the backline on Tyneside.

The Latest: Bid expected

As per Fussball Transfers, the North East club have already ‘knocked on the door’ over St. Juste’s potential signing, and it is ‘quite possible’ that they will make a bid for him in the summer.

As he will only have one year left on his contract by then, he will only cost around €12m (£10m), but the Tyneside outfit will also face competition from West Ham United, Leicester City, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and  VfL Wolfsburg for his signature.

The Verdict: Bargain

Considering that he is currently rated at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, getting St. Juste for a mere £10m would certainly be a bargain.

A self-proclaimed ‘fighter’, the Dutchman stands at a mammoth six-foot-three-inches tall, and his three aerial duels that he wins per game in the Bundesliga is only bettered by Stefan Bell at Mainz.

Atoning for his relatively small stature for a centre back – 6’0 – St. Juste is also exceptionally rapid, in fact he is the fastest player in the division, which is frightening considering that he is a central defender.

Nonetheless, at 25 years of age, he has not even hit his peak yet, and so now is the time for the Magpies to pounce.

Moshiri believes in Everton stadium project

A finance expert has now dropped an exciting Everton revelation involving Farhad Moshiri and the Bramley Moore stadium project.

The Lowdown: American interest

As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful have now attracted interest from American bidders willing to pay £350m to buy them.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Moshiri is looking for outside investment to help fund the Bramley Moore project, after investing more than £500m in the Merseyside club since his arrival.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, finance expert Kieran Maguire has now given his reaction to the reported interest, revealing that Moshiri thinks that the Bramley Moore project will ‘turn things around financially’:

“If the £350m means Moshiri writing off his debt then they would be getting it at a discount.

“Moshiri effectively bought them for £175m. Since then, he has added to the club by lending it large sums of money.

“He would end up having to take cut in terms of the total he has invested into Everton. A lot will depend on how he feels on a long-term basis.

“The noises I’ve heard from Everton are that he is committed and believes the Bramley Moore project will turn things around financially.

“That will coincide with things improving on the pitch as well because the more resources you have coming in, the more you can spend on new signings.

“As far as new owners would be concerned, they’d have to fund the stadium. So, it’s £350m plus the £400m to £500m that the stadium is going to cost.

The Verdict: Exciting

Given the concern for the Toffees in terms of the losses recorded in their financial accounts, the fact that the Bramley Moore project could ‘turn things around financially’ is certainly exciting.

Of course, new investment would help with that, whether that is Moshiri continuing to show his commitment or the American businessmen coming in.

The stadium is going to cost a lot of money in itself, but the Blues would hope that the money generated from its initial construction would surpass that, and so they could find themselves in a better financial position, while the supporters get to enjoy the new stadium.

Nonetheless, the club need a boost after what has happened to them on the pitch this season, and the new stadium should go some way in providing that.

Dracena e Moisés reforçam treino do Palmeiras; Borja trabalha à parte

Pietersen makes headlines, but not many runs

Well played Vikram Solanki and Gareth Andrew but, despite hundreds that came from 68 and 58 balls respectively, they won’t be making headlines

Well played Vikram Solanki and Gareth Andrew but, despite hundreds that came from 68 and 58 balls respectively, they won’t be making tomorrow’s headlines. That honour, if making a headline can be called such a thing at the moment, will belong to a man who made 38. This was an evening of Kevin Pietersen-watching, which began with a grovelling apology for his Twitter outburst the previous day, and ended with him being caught-and-bowled by Shaaiq Choudhry, a 24-year-old left-arm spinner, in his sixth one-day match. In the first of four Surrey appearances he is due to make between now and the end of the season Pietersen – in front of a crowd of 7,917, which is above-average for Surrey’s CB40 matches this year – managed to locate the middle of the bat. That is more than happened at Lord’s last week when his first-ball waft was the final push that Andy Flower needed to drop him for the first time in his career. Against one of the friendliest attacks he will have confronted since starting his international career six years ago, he faced 33 balls and struck six boundaries – one of which, an inside-out drive past mid-off, was more like the flamboyant batsman of old.Pietersen had spent three hours watching Worcestershire pile up 377 for 6, the second-highest 40-over score in history behind Surrey’s 386 against Glamorgan earlier this season, but he should have had a wicket when Matthew Spriegel dropped Andrew, albeit a tough chance, running round at long-off. Pietersen was then clubbed for two sixes and the over cost 17.With Rory Hamilton-Brown blazing a trail during a 41-ball 80, Pietersen opened his batting account with a quick single to mid-on having been cheered to the crease but, on 25, was given a life when he gloved a sweep down the leg-side. However, even without the injured Shakib Al Hasan playing for Worcestershire, Pietersen couldn’t escape his left-arm-spinner curse when he thumped a straight drive back at Choudhry. The bowler celebrated with the gusto that comes with dismissing a batsman with over 5000 Test runs.Paul Sheldon, the Surrey chief executive, called the Pietersen deal “win, win, win” for the batsman, the county and England. It’s not costing Surrey a penny due to Pietersen’s central contract, and Sheldon insisted Chris Adams, the cricket manager, was fully behind the decision. But he refused to confirm any interest in Pietersen beyond the current loan spell, although with Middlesex out of the running there seem few other options for relocation. With Steve Davies’ call-up to the England squad, it has been painted as a straight swap when it comes to the Surrey starting XI, but that wasn’t quite the case in this match with Davies still available. And when Davies departs, Surrey will need a wicketkeeper – Pietersen is probably reluctant to take that role – so Gary Wilson will come into the team, which means somebody who might have played had Pietersen not been here will miss out. That could be Jason Roy, the 20-year-old batsman, who is rated by many as a future England star. He has broken into the first team at The Oval, and made 76 on his Championship debut against Leicestershire last week to go alongside an unbeaten 101 off 57 balls against Essex in the Friends Provident t20, but wasn’t selected on Wednesday evening. With Surrey out of the running for Championship promotion, the final two games of the season would be ideal experience for Roy. Ironically, the lack of dead matches in the two-division structure has meant counties have found it harder to blood youngsters and now Roy could miss out. Of course it might not be him, but the ECB look to have made a persuasive argument for Pietersen.”This is more about England than about Surrey,” Sheldon said. “We want England to win the Ashes and we want KP back in form and if we can assist in that way then we’re absolutely delighted to do so.”Sheldon is right. Retaining the Ashes would have huge benefits to English cricket as a whole, but it will also be interesting to see if there is any reaction from the opposition should Pietersen have success which changes the course of end-of-season games. Surrey may be out of the running for prizes, but both their next two Championship opponents, Glamorgan and Gloucestershire, are gunning for promotion. Now they have to get past Pietersen, too.

Clark pleased by depth of NSW pace attack

Ten high-quality fast bowlers in one squad seems a bit excessive for a state team, but it looks like New South Wales will need the full list this summer

Ten high-quality fast bowlers in one squad seems a bit excessive for a state team, but it looks like New South Wales will need the full list this summer. The Blues’ first game is still almost three weeks away and already half the contingent is either on Australian duty or injured.Josh Hazlewood’s back stress fracture forced his exit from the India tour on Saturday and allowed a standby call up for his team-mate Mitchell Starc. Doug Bollinger and Shane Watson are also on that trip while Nathan Bracken is recovering from knee surgery and hoping for a December return. The wise Stuart Clark, the part-time captain and attack mentor at 34, has seen this sort of situation before. “It’s always the issue, you start off with 10, and by about November 10 you’re struggling to find three, due to injury, attrition and playing for Australia,” he said. “There could be a situation where we have too many, but there’s every chance, as per usual, that bowlers are hard to come by.”When the season starts with a one-day game against South Australia on October 9, Clark will probably line up beside a couple of Brett Lee, Trent Copeland, Burt Cockley and Moises Henriques. Life will become more complicated in November when the Test players should be available for two Sheffield Shield fixtures before the Ashes.Copeland, a 24-year-old right-armer, raced to 35 wickets in his first five Shield games for New South Wales last year during an amazing streak that began with 8 for 92 on debut against Queensland. He is in his first full season as a contracted player and said state training had been a who’s who of Australian cricket over the past couple of weeks. He thinks the overall depth in bowling spurs on the players. “It’s good for the competition and competitiveness at training,” he said at the pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast. “It’s no surprise New South Wales cricket is so strong, because there is competition for places, and it pushes guys to improve their skills.”However, there will still be times during the summer when the fast men are pigeon-holed as first-class or limited-overs players. Brett Lee has made that decision already following his retirement from white clothes last season, while Bracken could also head that way depending on how well his knee recovers from its latest operation.”There are some guys who are probably more suited to certain forms,” Clark said. “But I guarantee it will be all hands on deck for first of the game of the year, due to guys being with Australia and guys with injury. We’ll make these great predictions and they’ll be all useless by the start of the season.”Clark remains enthusiastic about being back on the domestic scene full-time following a disrupted summer last year, which followed the Ashes tour. He gained 12 wickets in five Sheffield Shield matches but missed a chunk of the season with a back injury.”I’m excited about playing cricket,” he said. “I still really want to play, still like going out to bat, bowl, field, run around, and play with the younger guys. There are no dramas there.”For the first time since he was elevated to the Australian squad in 2005 he has completed a proper pre-season. Most importantly for New South Wales, Clark is fit and available, unlike half of his fast bowling team-mates.
