Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones of Eurosport has shared what he knows on Liverpool and transfer target Fabio Carvalho after their failed deadline day move.

The Lowdown: Liverpool fall in 11th hour…

As widely reported, the Reds and manager Jurgen Klopp were inches away from signing Fulham’s starlet in the final hours of the January transfer window.

Liverpool had agreed an £8 million deal to sign the attacker, including add-ons and various clauses, but club chiefs could not finalise the necessary documentation before 11pm.

As a result, Carvalho’s move to Anfield fell through at the final hurdle, but Klopp and co have maintained their interest leading into the summer.

Liverpool’s manager is knowingly a big fan, recently admitting in a press conference that his side would be ‘crazy’ to not still be interested in signing the 19-year-old.

The Latest: Reds in pole position…

Speaking to GMS, Jones claims Liverpool are the frontrunners to sign Carvalho despite their failed move seemingly gifting other clubs a chance to swoop in.

“Liverpool are the frontrunners to sign him, there hasn’t been any further talks on it since it fell through,” claims the reporter.

“I think the player was a bit all over the place on deadline day, it was a bit frantic.

“He was doing a medical, he was trying to get his head around the contract that was being proposed and was trying to figure out if he could get back to Fulham.”

The Verdict: Worth the wait…

Having scored eight goals, whilst assisting five others, in all competitions this term (Transfermarkt) – we believe the teenage talent should be a priority for the Reds.

Carvalho has made waves in the Championship this term, prompting Liverpool’s interest, with Sky Sports feature writer Nick Wright branding the player ‘extraordinary’ on Twitter.

Seemingly having the world at his feet, Fulham’s talent could become an Anfield hero over the years to come if Liverpool can get him over the line soon.

Wolves could potentially make a summer move for Marseille and Croatia centre-back Duje Caleta-Car, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: No centre-backs added

Wanderers ended up having a quiet January transfer window, with no marquee additions coming in and Adama Traore joining Barcelona on loan.

Bruno Lage was linked with bringing in a centre-back in order to provide him with more depth in that area, but he will now rely on the likes of Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss staying fit.

It would be a surprise if a defender wasn’t signed in the summer, though, and a new update suggests that it’s a position which could be addressed.

The Latest: Wolves backed to sign Caleta-Car

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Caleta-Car could again be a target for Wolves, with the summer looking more likely for a move than January did.

The journalist stated: “I think maybe in the summertime, it could be a more realistic option that Caleta-Car could come back onto Wolves’ radar and be a more serious target than for January.”

The Verdict: Strong summer acquisition

Caleta-Car is a formidable defender who has become a key figure for both Marseille and Croatia, highlighting why he could be a good prospective signing for Wolves.

The 25-year-old has a hugely impressive 91.8% pass completion rate in Ligue 1 this season across 12 appearances, whereas Coady tops the pile with 88% for Wanderers in the Premier League.

Caleta-Car is also averaging 1.2 tackles and 2.1 clearances per game, showing that he is both a class act on the ball and a dominant figure out of possession, so it’s refreshing to hear that the Old Gold are set to maintain their interest in him.

Durham County Cricket Club has posted profits of almost £200,000 for the last financial year. With the club having secured an Ashes Test in 2013, and a landmark six-year sponsorship deal with Emirates Airlines signed, the underlying financial picture at Durham is encouraging.Their position is in stark contrast to a county like Essex, which recorded a loss of £216,000 for 2009. With Surrey – who have a long-term match staging deal with the ECB – having announced a profit of £752,000 for the same year, it is evident that a split is starting to appear in the county game – largely between those with Test grounds and the other, smaller, venues.”Revenue from international cricket is, in the medium term, essential to all of the Category A venues of which the recently renamed Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground is one,” said David Harker, Durham’s chief executive.”We are now seeing a recurring pattern where even the bigger, major city centre venues are losing between £500,000 and £1,000,000 in years without midsummer Test Matches. This situation is only sustainable if clubs are able to retain sufficient income from Test Matches in order to fund the costs of running such major venues in the lean years.”Chester -le-Street hosted a Test match against West Indies in May 2009 – the second time the team has played a Test there in three years – but due to the early season start and poor weather, the event yielded lower than expected income.However, the match still returned a small profit for the club, as did the well-attended one-day international against Australia in September of that year. Before the Ashes Test in 2013, Durham will host other international fixtures, including an ODI between England and Pakistan later this year.”Durham, with a commercial debt of £3.5m, does not have the debt levels of many other venues, which for a number of clubs is reportedly between £8m and £19m. I am pleased however that the ECB recognises the problem and that there is currently a lot of work going on within the game to address the issue of major match allocation.”The current ECB process is that grounds that aren’t given long-term staging agreements have to bid against each other to host Tests, one-dayers and Twenty20s. In order to secure big matches, many counties are engaged in re-development projects. Lancashire announced a record loss of £546,000 after Old Trafford didn’t host a Test in 2009 and began their extensive redevelopment plans to try and ensure they earn an Ashes contest in 2013.In accordance with the requirements of the ECB, additional improvements to Durham’s infrastructure, funded by grant and ongoing equity investment, have also taken shape during the last 12 months. Currently the permanent capacity of The Riverside is being increased from 8,000 to 9,500, with further undercover facilities to be provided for supporters as well as an enhanced ECB Hospitality Area capable of hosting 200 people on a match day.”We are fortunate that with, for example, the hotel and Gateway Building we have a number of long term income generating opportunities to underpin our cricketing ambitions,” added Harker.”Durham CCC is an ambitious club and although we have already achieved many milestones, we must continue to develop our infrastructure and international profile,” said Clive Leach CBE, Durham’s chairman.”Improvements such as the media centre, additional seating capacity and the new hotel development will reinforce the ground’s status on the world stage and should help us to secure more profitable international cricket and other major events for Durham.”That in turn will allow us to maintain investment in the academy and the squad, so that we can continue to enjoy excellent domestic cricket and teams that consistently challenge for honours.”

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper is expected to make a return to action in early March after a lengthy injury, according to fitness expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Cooper absent for months

The Whites have suffered numerous injury problems throughout the season, with key players missing large chunks of the campaign and the team duly struggling.

Cooper is one of those who has featured little as the weeks have passed, only managing 15 Premier League appearances and not playing since early December.

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery confirmed that Cooper is on course to return early next month. The injury expert outlined:

“We know Bielsa is a stickler for making sure his players are on it. You will typically see players transition from working with the physios to the sports science department and then first-team training.

“We are expecting a return to play in early March. That gives us a fairly good indication of where those players are. So it could be that the player is with the first-team squad for a couple of weeks before they are thrown back into the first-team limelight.

“This is a big step forward. I would expect more big strides within the next seven to 10 days and coming into consideration for the development side.”

The Verdict: Huge positive for Leeds

Cooper is such an influential figure at Elland Road, being hailed as ‘brilliant’ by Ally McCoist in the past and averaging a squad-high 3.6 successful aerial duels per game in the league this season.

His return will be a major boost for Marcelo Bielsa, not only because of the quality he brings but also because of his leadership skills, which he illustrates be routinely winning crucial headers at the back.

The spine of Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford was integral to Leeds’ success last season, and eventually having all three back fit should help to steer them away from the threat of relegation.

Sharad Pawar, the ICC president, has said there was “no question of protecting anybody”, including his one-time protégé Lalit Modi, if the person was found guilty of corruption. Pawar, a former BCCI president, credited Modi for the IPL’s success but said he would not interfere in the board’s “fair trial”.”If somebody has committed some mistake, he will have to face the music,” Pawar told television channel CNN-IBN. “No question of protecting anybody, not only Modi but anybody.”IPL, the product, has been a success in this country. It has established that India can also organise such things, and there he [Modi] has taken lots of pain, there are no two opinions about that. But his style of functioning has become controversial and the present board feels it should go in-depth [probe]. The board has deputed a committee, let us see what the outcome is. From what I know of BCCI it will take an appropriate decision and take steps to improve their functioning and image. I am confident that he has to be given a fair trial. But I can’t interfere either way.”Modi was suspended immediately following the conclusion of IPL 3 and charged with financial irregularities relating to the bidding process for IPL franchises, the mid-over ad sales and the sale of theatrical rights. He was also charged with colluding to set up a rebel league in England.Pawar was thought to be one of Modi’s backers but he said that he was not supporting or opposing anyone. “All of us – myself, Modi and Manohar – have worked together as a group and have contributed something. But the present set-up feels something has gone wrong. So until these [wrongdoings] are not established, it is not proper for me to support or oppose one against the other. Basically I am keeping away from all this.”While admitting the controversies had affected the IPL’s image to a certain extent, Pawar said it wasn’t a scandal and that the overall position of the league wouldn’t be damaged. “I don’t think IPL’s overall position will be damaged. But definitely, in the mind of cricket-loving people within India and outside, they have started thinking in a different way that there seems to be some wrong things happening.”I don’t think we have come to the conclusion [that it is a scandal]. There is difference between allegation and a scandal. One has to see how far these allegations are correct. The BCCI is going into details and it will definitely come to a conclusion and then we can say something.”
