Vettori 'satisfied' with warm-up win

Daniel Vettori is confident New Zealand can continue to improve after easily accounting for Ireland in their first warm-up match at the ICC World Twenty20

Daniel Vettori is confident New Zealand can continue to improve after easily accounting for Ireland in their first warm-up match at the ICC World Twenty20. Jesse Ryder (64) starred with the bat and Nathan McCullum with the ball on a Providence Stadium pitch that proved very slow.Ross Taylor, Shane Bond and Brendon McCullum played no part against Ireland and will be keen for a run in the second practice game, against West Indies on Wednesday. Vettori was pleased with the victory, which also featured a Martin Guptill half-century, but he said the West Indies match would be a better gauge of New Zealand’s form.”We’re satisfied with the win and satisfied with some individual performances,” Vettori said. “Jesse was outstanding at top and Guptill finished it off pretty well, and Nathan McCullum was outstanding with the ball. On a wicket like that you’ve got to be inch perfect because it’s so slow.”It’s important to improve, we’ve got Bond and McCullum to come back in and Taylor, they’re three pretty crucial players for us. Getting those guys back in the team will be important. West Indies look like a really good team and I think they’d be one of the favourites on their home grounds, so if we can perform against them then we know we’re in good shape.”Taylor will be extra keen to find some touch in the shortest format, having failed to pass 20 in his most recent five international innings. Although he is a key Test and one-day player, his Twenty20 record of three half-centuries and an average of 21 for New Zealand leaves room for improvement.”He’s a proven Twenty20 performer,” Vettori said. “He probably needs to step up a little on the international form of the game but he knows what he’s doing. To have him back in the team will make a huge difference. But McCullum at the top of the order is the real key. If he has a good tournament I think the team will fire.”The two warm-ups in Guyana will be extra useful for New Zealand, as they play both their pool matches against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at the same venue. The slow pace encouraged Vettori to open with the spin of Nathan McCullum, who grabbed three wickets, but he was disappointed with his own results of 0 for 33 from three overs.

Rangers must solve Ianis Hagi nightmare

Rangers have been dealt a major blow this week as Gio van Bronckhorst has confirmed that Ianis Hagi will miss the rest of the season at Ibrox through injury.

The Romania international went off with a knock against Stirling Albion and the Dutch head coach has now revealed that he will not play again this season.

He said: “Ianis needed an operation.

“He went for this yesterday and we will sadly be missing Ianis for the season. I spoke to Ianis yesterday and he is positive and focused on his recovery.”

Forget Hagi

As sad as this news is for the Gers, it is now time to forget about Hagi for now and focus on solving the nightmare his injury has caused.

He has been a consistent performer for the club this season, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.10 across 15 starts in the Premiership, and has left a huge hole in the XI, with van Bronckhorst now needing to find a way to fill it.

One player who has been linked with a switch to Ibrox is Galatasaray midfielder Olimpiu Morutan and he could be an ideal replacement for Hagi. The club must look to snap him up before the transfer window slams shut next week as he could fill the gap left in the starting XI.

He has three goals and three assists in 12 league starts for Galatasaray, which means that he is averaging a goal contribution every other match so far this term. Morutan has also won 51% of his individual duels, showing that he can hold his own in physical battles, albeit not by dominating them, and would not be a lightweight for the Gers.

The attacker’s agent, Florin Vulturar, lauded his client back in 2021, saying: “He is an innate talent, probably the most technical Romanian player since Gheorghe Hagi.

“He is a pure number 10, capable of creating opportunities for his teammates, but who can also do well in the defensive phase of every match if necessary.

“He is fast, has a great vision and is good at passing. He easily surpasses his opponents in one-on-one situations.

“Paulo Dybala and Lionel Messi are the models to follow in his role, we can probably assimilate his style of play with the play of these players.”

These comments highlight how similar he is to the injured Gers star in terms of his position and his style of play, with both players wanting to get on the ball and create chances with their vision and creativity in the number 10 role, or out wide. This is why the £4.5m-rated gem could be an ideal replacement for his compatriot this month.

Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst must now look to strike a deal with Galatasaray to bring him in to solve the nightmare they are currently in following Hagi’s knee injury. He has shown that he can score and create goals and has potential to improve further at the age of 22, which suggests that he could be a fine addition to the squad.

Tim Bresnan thinks he has ‘something special still in the tank’•AFP

Few players have done more to advance their international ambitions in the last six months than Tim Bresnan. From being a bit-part player whose main chances came through injury or squad rotation he is now a key member in both forms of one-day cricket and produced a Man-of-the-Match display against New Zealand in St Lucia. His miserly spell of 1 for 20 was a key reason why New Zealand couldn’t escape England’s clutches on a slow pitch. He began with three overs for 15, including the wicket of Jesse Ryder, and returned to bowl a superb final over. Then, with Eoin Morgan needing someone to stay with him towards the end of the chase Bresnan struck a calm 23 from 11 balls which carried England over the line with five balls to spare. When Bresnan made his Test debut against West Indies last summer he was only keeping the place warm for Andrew Flintoff and he duly moved aside for the Ashes. His evolution really started in the Champions Trophy when he hit 80 against Australia in the semi-final and he impressed in the one-day series against Bangladesh. Following an injury call-up to replace Graham Onions he was the most impressive quick in the Test series and scored a crucial 91 in Dhaka. After continuing his form in West Indies he feels there is still more to come.”I do believe I’ve still got a little bit more in the tank, a little bit more of me that I can show you,” he said. “You’re probably going to be surprised again, like you were, a few months ago, in Bangladesh . But I’ve known myself I’ve always had that ability, and you’re going to see something a little bit more special yet. I’ve always had these performances in the tank; you’re actually starting to see them come out of me now.”If a feeling persists that he could still be taken apart by a batsman in full flight then that can be said of any bowler in this tournament. Bresnan has shown is adaptability in this event, switching from back-of-a-length to yorker bowling and also subtle changes of pace as with the delivery to remove Ryder.”I think the first over is almost easier than bowling the third or fourth,” he said. “If you bowl it where you want to – back of a length and straight – with a little bit of variation, especially if it swings as well, the batsmen are just going to have a little bit of a look at you.”By the third or fourth over, that is when the batter really starts to try to cash in. That’s when you’ve got to use your skill and nous to do something different, and keep them guessing.”The faith shown in Bresnan by Andy Flower is similar to the belief that Duncan Fletcher had in another Yorkshire allrounder, Craig White, when many didn’t think he was up to international standard. Bresnan now finds himself in the No. 7 position ahead of the Michael Yardy, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad.”I’m feeling very, very relaxed in my role and I’m enjoying the responsibility of bowling the first and last over and batting at seven – a ‘finishing’ position,” he said. “Everyone’s really excited with where we’re heading for the future. We’re getting better every day, and it’s fantastic to be a part of it.”Most of the England squad have produced a crucial performance at some stage of the tournament with captain Paul Collingwood the only one who has really struggled to make an impact. That is a significant development in the side that used to rest heavily on a few players in one-day cricket and Monday’s win against New Zealand was also completed without Kevin Pietersen.”On this trip so far, 75% of the lads have had a match-winning performance,” Bresnan said. “The rest of the lads that haven’t done something spectacular are saving it for the semis and the final.”Any one of us can do it. That is the belief we’ve got, to take this competition right to the final. We’re not finished yet. We don’t want to be the team that gets to the semis and says ‘that’s a pretty good effort’. We’ve actually come to win this thing.”

West Ham: Moyes must unleash Alese

Despite it being widely reported that a new centre-back was one of David Moyes’ primary targets in the January transfer window, West Ham United ultimately failed to bring in a fresh face in the position – something which has left the 58-year-old considerably short of depth in the heart of his defence.

Indeed, the season-ending ACL injury sustained by Angelo Ogbonna means the Scot has just Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as options at centre-back, with the latter two of this duo having struggled to prove that they are capable of starting for a side pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

This is something that led to Moyes reportedly taking an interest in Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car last month, however, after the Ligue 1 side failed to budge on their stance of a £15m upfront payment, and West Ham demanding on a loan to buy deal, the move subsequently fell through.

As such, with no incoming defender ultimately arriving at the London Stadium this winter, perhaps it would be wise for the manager to take a closer look at one of the club’s up and coming prospects to provide him with greater depth in the heart of defence in the second half of the season – in the form of Aji Alese.

“Gold dust”

Having worked his way through the West Ham academy, the 21-year-old centre-back very much appears to be on the cusp of breaking into the Hammers’ first-team squad.

Indeed, he has already made two appearances for the senior side – highly impressing in a 5-1 Carabao cup victory over Hull City back in 2020, as well as making his European debut in the 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb earlier this season.

Standing at 6 foot 4 tall, the £360k-rated defender cuts an imposing figure on the pitch, while his ability with the ball at his feet, in addition to the fact he is left-footed, is something that has earned the youngster a considerable amount of praise.

Speaking about the centre-back following his aforementioned performance against Hull, the We Are West Ham podcaster, Tom Edwards, said of the 21-year-old: “Alese [is] a left-footed centre-half, which is gold dust.

“Obviously, we’ve got Ogbonna, which [makes us] probably the only club in the league who has a half-decent left-footed centre-half other than [Manchester] City with [Nathan] Ake, there’s not many of them about.

“[Alese] looked like a seriously good player, as well – comfortable on the ball, good in the air, and it was just a joy to see two young players, who, not like [Declan] Rice or [Reece] Oxford, you heard lots about.

“Obviously, we’ve heard bits and bobs about Alese and Ashby, but they sort of [came] out the woodwork this pre-season and looked like really good players – and that’s what we want.”

As such, while it was obviously a disappointment to miss out on the signing of Caleta-Car this January, Moyes could well unearth a perfect alternative to the Croatia international in Alese – all that is required is for the 58-year-old to take a chance on the West Ham prodigy.

Pakistan have not selected former captain Younis Khan, whose indefinite ban was recently overturned, in their Test and Twenty20 squads for the tour of England between June and September. Fast bowler Umar Gul has recovered from his shoulder injury and makes a comeback after missing the ICC World Twenty20 and the Asia Cup.Younis, along with three team-mates, had been banned by the PCB following Pakistan’s winless tour of Australia in 2009-10. However, after filing appeals, Younis and Shoaib Malik were pardoned by the board. Malik made a comeback soon afterwards and played in the ongoing Asia Cup in Sri Lanka but Younis’ return has not been immediate. The selectors also included legspinner Danish Kaneria in the Test squad despite him being under investigation for allegations concerning his involvement in “match irregularities” during Essex’s Pro40 campaign last season. Shoaib Akhtar, who made a comeback to the national team during the Asia Cup, is part of the Twenty20 team but not the Test outfit. Shahid Afridi, the captain, had said that he didn’t think Shoaib was ready for a Test return. “I think his fitness will be tested in Test matches,” Afridi said. Also making a return to the Test team was opening batsman Yasir Hameed, who last’s appearance was against India at Bangalore in 2007.
