John Ward25-Dec-2009This report has been made possible by the Scottish CricketSupporters, who gave me a lift to the Harare South Country Clubground when I was unable to get petrol during the current fuelcrisis. Thanks very much to them all.It was a most interesting match in which the balance swungunexpectedly from one side to the other, before Zimbabwe Afinally gained their first victory of the tournament by 8 runs.Zimbabwe A recovered well after being seriously tied down byaccurate bowling, while Scotland made a gallant challenge forvictory after defeat seemed inevitable. Craig Evans was one ofthe changes to the Zimbabwean team, which was noticeably quieteron the field and well led by Gavin Rennie in a pleasantatmosphere.Scotland put Zimbabwe A in to bat on winning the toss on a warm, generally sunny morning. The pitch was good but the outfieldthick, making run-scoring rather difficult. After DarlingtonMatambanadzo played out a maiden over from James Brinkley, MarkVermeulen got off the mark with an exquisitely timed square cutfor four off Craig Wright, but it was to be his only scoringstroke. With the total on 7, he was beaten and bowled byBrinkley, with a ball that straightened and had him playing downthe wrong line.Matambanadzo, as often, settled in slowly and kept finding thefielders, as did his new partner Neil Ferreira. After showingsome signs of frustration, Matambanadzo finally managed to gettwo drives away for three, but accurate bowling frustrated themas they tried to work the ball around for ones and twos. Thescore was only 45 in the 18th over when Ferreira called for arisky single on the leg side, Matambanadzo was late in rejectingthe call, and Ferreira was run out for 9, Douglas Lockhartrunning in to field from midwicket.Gavin Rennie came close to being run out as he got off the markwith a similarly risky single. Matambanadzo, several timesstepping down the pitch to try to force away the bowling, workedhard and reached a well-deserved fifty, mainly through drives, edges and some rather risky singles. He was eventually run outfor 62, responding late to a risky call by Rennie, giving thebowler Drew Parsons time to throw down the stumps. The score wasnow 117 for three, and Matambanadzo later paid tribute to thehighly disciplined and accurate bowling that made it so hard toscore.Rennie did not last much longer; forced to take risks to improvethe run rate, he skyed a catch off Brinkley to captain GeorgeSalmond at mid-off. The score was 129 for four in the 36th over. This left two new batsmen, Greg Lamb and Dion Ebrahim, to boosta disappointing scoring rate, and this they did with some finerunning between wickets Ebrahim in particular nipping back andforth like lightning. So enterprisingly did they bat that thebowling lost some of its accuracy, and at one point CraigMcKellar earned a round of applause from his teammates forbowling a rare dot ball.200 looked a possibility or the first time, but the boundary washard to reach, apart from a sweep by Ebrahim. Finally a swing tothe long-leg boundary off the final ball of the innings took thetotal to 205 for four wickets, Lamb on 40 and Ebrahim 36. Thepair had added 76 runs in just under 13 overs and given theirteam a decided advantage.Lockhart and Neil McRae opened steadily for Scotland, waiting forthe bad ball to punish, and put on 28 together before the lattersnicked a catch to first slip Vermeulen off Everton Matambanadzofor 12. Ayaz Gul was almost immediately dropped, a hard chanceto the keeper off ‘Pommie’ Mbangwa, and then settled down withLockhart to take the scored through to 60. Lockhart opened hisshoulders and swung Andre Hoffman almost for six over long-on,but soon after stepped down the pitch to drive Ian Engelbrechtand was smartly stumped by Ferreira for 26. Soon afterwards Gul(20) played a half-hearted drive against Paul Strang, yet anotherintroduction into this team, and lobbed a low catch towardsbackward point, where it was caught by Hoffman diving low. At 68for three, in the 25th over, Scotland were in some difficulty.Drew Parsons reacted to the situation with attack, twice pullingEngelbrecht fiercely to square leg, the second shot to besuperbly saved by Everton Matambanadzo. Briefly the pairthreatened to take charge, but then captain George Salmond (6)hammered Rennie at about knee-height to Mbangwa at deepish mid-onand departed for his first failure of the tour; 85 for four.New batsman Colin Smith immediately unleashed a ferociousoff-drive for four, but then the aggressive Parsons, sweeping atRennie, was adjudged lbw on the front foot for 17. At 92 forfive, Scotland’s chances of victory now appeared very slim. Themiddle order did not give up, with Smith and Wright battingusefully together until the latter, as non-striker, called for aquick leg-bye, a risky call to which Smith (13) was late inresponding, giving time for Ferreira to throw the ball to thebowler Rennie for an easy run-out. Then Wright (19) swattedStrang to midwicket where Vermeulen nonchalantly reached down topluck an ankle-high catch. At 123 for seven all seemed lost.Brinkley and Gregor Maiden was also resolved to go on fighting, although the required scoring rate steadily rose to about eightan over. They enjoyed a few snicks and had a few lusty blows, until Maiden (13) swung Rennie round the corner for DarlingtonMatambanadzo to grasp the ball low down. He appeared either tolose control or toss the ball away immediately in celebration, but the batsman walked and Scotland were 143 for eight. Then, as the pace bowlers returned, Brinkley launched a powerfulassault with some clean, straight hitting. He alone of thebatsmen in the match seemed able to reach the boundary, and withtwo overs to go Scotland were still in with a chance, 21 needed.Brinkley hit Everton Matambanadzo wide of long-on for four, thentook a single into the covers. Cox took one to the left ofmidwicket, then Brinkley hit to midwicket, took two to long-onand then a single from a difficult chance to Ebrahim at long-off.Mbangwa was to bowl the last over with 12 needed for victory.Brinkley took one to mid-on, then Cox swung and missed. Brinkleycharged down the pitch, backing up for a single, while Ferreirathrew the ball towards the bowler’s end aiming for a run-out.Brinkley, seeing it coming, stopped it with his foot, deliberately and hoping he would get away with it as he latergood-naturedly admitted, and was given out ‘obstructing thefield’. He scored 54 off 47 balls, with 5 fours. Thiseffectively ended Scotland’s gallant challenge, Cox and McKellartaking a single apiece before Cox (3) skyed a simple return catch- all out 197.Both teams shook hands with smiles all round in true sportingspirit at the end of a fine match, and both presented gifts toeach other. This is all in the true spirit of the game, whichwas sadly lacking from the match against Holland.

'We can compete with any side' – Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf wants to focus on the positives as Pakistan hope to pick up the pieces from the traumatic Sydney defeat as they build-up to what will now be a dead rubber at Hobart.

Pakistan will hope to pick up the pieces from the traumatic Sydney defeat as they build-up to what will now be a dead rubber at Hobart, where the best they can do is avoid a fourth successive whitewash at the hands of Australia. The squad has taken the 36-run loss hard and Mohammad Yousuf, the captain, has been trying since to lift the side for the final Test, which begins on January 14. “The team was very, very disappointed after Sydney,” Yousuf told Cricinfo.”But as I told them after the Melbourne loss, we have to see that we continue to play good cricket. We could and should have won at Sydney but we didn’t. Few people thought that we could match Australia before we came on this tour, but we played very well here for three days and had one very poor day.”The comments would seem to reinforce what has been the main criticism of Pakistan on this tour; that the side hasn’t believed at any point they could challenge and topple Australia. The opening days of the Boxing Day Test and the last at the SCG were particularly illuminating, when Pakistan veered between timidity and blind panic.Reaction in Pakistan has been predictably harsh, which also reveals how eagerly this series was being followed. Jamshed Dasti, head of the national assembly’s committee on sports, has been at the forefront of the backlash, asking with force once again for the ouster of the PCB chief Ijaz Butt. This time there might be enough momentum building for it to result in something.A number of ex-players, as expected, have not held back, asking for the heads of Yousuf, coach Intikhab Alam, the selection committee and a number of other players. “I think we can expect the criticism,” Yousuf said. “I’m not saying don’t criticise us but maybe it should be more constructive and it should also highlight the positives that have come out from the Test series as a whole.”Changes are expected in the Test side for Hobart and one is guaranteed. In an unusual move indicative of just how seriously they are viewing the loss, the PCB has issued a release stating that Sarfraz Ahmed is not only flying out to Australia, he will also be keeping wickets in the third Test ahead of Kamran Akmal. The positions of Faisal Iqbal and Misbah-ul-Haq will also come under intense scrutiny; they have one fifty between them in four innings here. However, the paucity of Pakistan’s batting resources is such that they will most likely be replaced by Khurram Manzoor and Shoaib Malik, both of whom were dropped halfway through the New Zealand tour. Questions will be asked about why Fawad Alam was so hastily sent back and not tried after one Test failure in New Zealand; that came two Tests after a debut hundred as an opener, a position he had never played in before.”We have to look at the positives as we get ready for Hobart,” Yousuf said. “Nobody can say whether we will win or lose but we just have to play good cricket for the entire duration. We had our moments in the first Test, where we fought hard. We did well for three days in Sydney. I think the positives are that we know we can compete with any side in the world.”We now need to learn from our mistakes because if we do then we can beat any side out there.”

Dejan Kulusevski: Spurs eye Alli successor

Dele Alli’s time at Tottenham Hotspur could soon be coming to an end after the club were linked with a move for a new attacking midfielder…

What’s the word?

According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia), Spurs will battle their north London rivals Arsenal to sign the Juventus outcast during the January transfer window.

It was the Lilywhites’ sporting director Fabio Paratici who signed him for the Serie A giants, so they could well be leading the race to seal his signature, in which Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also keen.

The Bianconeri appear to be willing to sell the 20-cap Sweden international for a minimum of €35m (£30m) to €40m (£34m) next month.

Bye-bye Alli?

The 21-year-old dynamo, who is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, has dropped down the pecking order at the Allianz Stadium under Massimiliano Allegri this season.

Just four of his 21 appearances this term have been starts, whilst he has provided one goal and four assists from just 724 minutes of action, per Transfermarkt.

Last season, he enjoyed a lot of success as he delivered 14 direct goal contributions across 47 matches. What made that even more impressive was the fact that he did so whilst playing in at least seven different roles. A very versatile talent, indeed.

If that isn’t enough to suggest that he’s a perfect fit for Antonio Conte and his system, then perhaps praise from others in and around the game is.

“Kulusevski is an explosive player who likes to challenge his direct opponent,” once claimed ex-Sweden striker Marcus Allback to The Sun. “He likes to dribble with the ball, play the short passes and he is very good on the through balls. He’s quick and would cause a lot of trouble for most of the teams he plays.”

Whilst experienced Italian coach Pierpaolo Bisoli believes there are shades of Mohamed Salah about him “He has incredible physical strength. He reminds me of a young Salah for the way he shakes off opponents in the first ten metres,” he said.

On the above evidence, the fact that he is versatile and hugely dynamic, Kulusevski could well be a better fit for Conte at Spurs than Alli, whose best position is still undetermined.

Furthermore, there have been reports suggesting that Tottenham could finally be open to selling the 25-year-old amid his long-term struggles on the pitch.

Once dubbed a “freak of a talent” by former Lilywhites star Darren Anderton, Alli has failed to hit the heights of his past glory, managing only one goal and one assist this season.

Therefore, the £27m-rated dynamo could offer Conte and co a lot more than the Englishman, so if they are able to secure a move for him in January, then the club absolutely must do all they can to pull it over the line.

Spurs’ new boss could finally bin Alli with a move for the exciting Swedish sensation.

Celtic dealt blow in Callum Styles pursuit

Celtic have been dealt a big blow in their bid to bring Callum Styles to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claimed that Barnsley look set to play hardball regarding the sale of the 21-year-old this month, as Poya Asbaghi recently revealed that he is not willing to let any of his first-team regulars leave the club midway through the season.

Speaking about his plans for the January market, the Barnsley boss said: “In the end, we want to make room in the squad and it’s better to let go of players who aren’t playing – not players who are playing. I will not go too deep into specifics on positions but I can say maybe left-back is not our biggest concern.”

The Daily Record went on to suggest that this update will come as a blow to Ange Postecoglou and his Celtic side, as the 56-year-old Bhoys boss is believed to have identified the versatile left-footer as one of his primary targets this month in a bid to solve the troublesome left-back spot in his Hoops side.

Postecoglou will be livid

Considering just how impressive Styles has been for Barnsley this season, in addition to how well suited he seems to Postecoglou’s particular brand of football, the news that the Yorkshire club look set to put up a fight for the 21-year-old this month is sure to have left the Celtic manager livid.

Indeed, over his 22 league outings in the current campaign, the £2.7m-rated man – who has often been deployed in a more advanced position on the left flank this season, as well as in central midfield – has scored one goal, registered one assist and created three big chances for his teammates.

The £3.4k-per-week 21-year-old has also averaged 1.3 interceptions, 2.3 tackles and one key pass and won 4.6 duels per game. These returns have seen the player who Cauley Woodrow dubbed a “massive talent” average a SofaScore match rating of 6.77, ranking him as Barnsley’s eighth-best performer in the Championship.

As such, due to his attacking inclination, positional versatility and extremely high potential, it is clear to see why Postecoglou would be interested in a move for Styles this month.

However, following the latest update concerning the youngster’s future, it would appear as if a move for the Barnsley starlet may be rather tricky to pull off for Celtic this month, something which will undoubtedly come as a big blow to the Hoops manager and his side.

Easy wins for Mountaineers and Eagles

A summary of the first round of games from Zimbabwe’s domestic Stanbic Bank Twenty20 series.

Cricinfo staff12-Feb-2010

Hamilton Masakadza struck a boundary-laden 76 to guide his side to victory in the opening match of the competition•Zimbabwe Cricket

Mountaineers cruised to an easy victory over Mid West Rhinos in the opening match of Zimbabwe’s revamped domestic Twenty20 competition at Harare Sports Club. A typically bellicose innings of 76 by their captain Hamilton Masakadza swept them to an eight-wicket victory with more than four overs to spare.Mountaineers decided to field on winning the toss, and had the Rhinos five down for just 38 after nine overs of tight bowling and fielding. Brendan Taylor and Riki Wessels fell within the first 12 balls, and after the in-form Vusi Sibanda was dismissed for 7, the English imports, Darren Stevens and Ollie Rayner, were also disposed of for single figures. Malcolm Waller then found an able partner in Graeme Cremer, and with positive and judicious batting they put on 72 runs for the sixth wicket. Waller struck Shingi Masakadza for a superb six over extra cover and then lofted him straight for four on his way to 55 from 52 balls before skying a catch to mid on in the 19th over, while Cremer finished the innings unbeaten on 35.Despite their decent recovery, Rhinos were always going to struggle to defend 125 against a strong Mountaineers line-up. Bernard Mlambo hit the first three balls of the innings for four to grab the ascendancy, and Masakadza quickly hit his stride hitting sixes over extra cover and straight back past the bowler. Mountaineers stormed to 61 in five overs and never looked back, and although Masakadza was bowled by a full toss from Ed Rainsford on the verge of victory, Tatenda Taibu struck the winning boundary to finish on 27 not out.Mashonaland Eagles completed a five-wicket victory over Matabeleland Tuskers in the second match of the day. After an early stutter in their pursuit of 119, Elton Chigumbura, the Eagles captain, seized the initiative with an unbeaten 48 from just 34 balls to guide his side to a win.The Tuskers did themselves no favours in an innings containing four run-outs; the result of frenetic running and some fine fielding by the Eagles. Gavin Ewing ran himself out without facing a ball, and after Mark Vermeulen – who was the leading scorer in last year’s Twenty20 competition – departed for 7, Charles Coventry played a high-risk innings, hitting two fours and a six from the seven balls he faced. His dismissal, a catch driven straight to long-off, left Tuskers in trouble at 29 for 3. Then followed the only sizable stand of the innings – 40 between Sean Williams and Greg Strydom. Their partnership ended in another run out, and after that Williams played a lone hand in holding the innings together. But he is a strokeplayer in a competition that favours power hitters, and finished on 44 off 58 balls, hitting only two fours. The total of 118 for 7 was scarcely likely to test the Eagles. Tuskers began with a tactical surprise, opening the bowling with the part-time medium pacer Dion Ebrahim, who began with two wide balls to Doug Marillier, one of a group of former national players to return to the fold in recent weeks. After a slow start, and with the help of a brilliant leaping catch by Ewing in the covers to send Marillier back for 10, Tuskers reduced Eagles to 36 for 3. Chigumbura decided a change of policy was needed, and announced himself with a straight six off Ewing that hit the media centre. He lost Greg Lamb for single figures, and had a couple of lucky escapes, but hit another spectacular six and continued the assault. Forster Mutizwa was run out at 89, but Chigumbura was not to be denied, and another big six over long-off eventually saw the Eagles home.
