Bahrain’s Imran Sajjad signalled his side’s intention of getting a promotion after scoring a brilliant century in their 161-run win over Suriname. His 106 was the highlight of Bahrain’s imposing total of 278 for 5 in a match reduced to 38 overs a side, with Adil Hanif and Azeem Ul Haque also scoring half centuries. In reply, Qamar Saeed took 3 for 10 as Bahrain dismissed Suriname for just 117.”My coach told me that I needed to play my natural game, but in the first 20 overs I just scored ones and twos, before playing more attacking shots which is my natural game,” Sajjad said. “I think my team will win promotion this week and we are all very confident.”An all-round display helped Guernsey to their first points of the tournament, with a four-wicket win against Gibraltar at Port Soif. Put in by the hosts, Gibraltar were lifted by Kieron Ferrary’s superb strokeplay. A 68-run partnership with wicketkeeper Richard Buzaglo looked to have given them the perfect launchpad but the Guernsey bowlers did well to keep the score down to 227 for 7. Gary Rich and Jeremy Frith were the pick of the lot with two wickets apiece. While Ferrary stroked 10 fours in his 115-ball 90, Iain Latin provided some late fireworks during his crucial 42. Lee Savident shepherded Guernsey’s chase at the top with a fluent 53 and while his was the top score, the final impetus was provided by captain Stuart Le Prevost who hit a quick 45. Cameos from Benjamin Ferbrache and Justin Meades at the bottom of the order ensured Guernsey got home with three balls to spare.”It was a great run chase by the team and the boys have done really well. We are all really pleased as everybody contributed,” Le Prevost said. “I was disappointed to get out though as I wanted to take the team through to the end.”Gibraltar scramble a single during their defeat against hosts Guernsey•ICC/CricketEurope

In the other game of the day at KG Five, Nigeria recorded a thrilling two-wicket victory over Japan in the penultimate over. An unbeaten 55 not out from Ko Irie helped Japan to 187 for 8 off 50 overs before an exciting run-chase saw Nigeria squeeze home. Player of the Match Adekunle Adegbola (48), Akabogu Okwudili (32) and Olajide Bejide (30) were the main contributors for Nigeria, with Gavin Beath (3 for 20) the pick of the Japanese attack.”A victory was what we were all looking for,” Adegbola said. “We knew that we only needed four runs an over, so we knew that we didn’t need to score a lot of boundaries, and just keep the score ticking over. The conditions are totally different to those in Nigeria so you have to adapt to the conditions. I am trying to acclimatize myself to the conditions but I am finding it very cold.”Sunday’s washed out matches have now been rescheduled for Tuesday and will be played at the same venues as in the original schedule.

Everton manager news on Schmidt

Some Everton fans have been left fuming as some manager news emerged involving Roger Schmidt.

As per SportBILD (via Sport Witness), both the Goodison Park faithful, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, have ‘recently’ made ‘enquiries’ over the PSV manager’s availability, who is looking to leave in the summer.

They are ‘settled’ on Rafa Benitez, but more bad results on top of them losing their last three games in the Premier League could mean a decision may have to be made.

Whether Schmidt would actually be an upgrade on Benitez is another question, as he has no prior experience of managing in English football, while this season has not gone as well as he would have hoped, being thrashed 5-0 by their biggest Eredivisie rivals Ajax and in danger of not qualifying from their UEFA Europa League group.

Nonetheless, Benitez has not been in the job long enough to have his future questioned, especially if Schmidt is considered to be his replacement.

Everton fans on Schmidt news

These Toffees fumed as the news was shared on Twitter, with one Blues supporter even going as far as to claim that Schmidt would be a ‘dreadful’ appointment:

Rain ensures series win for India

India won the series 2-1 after torrential downpour terminated the fourth ODI after just 7.3 overs of play

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
India won the series 2-1 after torrential downpour terminated the fourth ODI. With this victory, India have won their fifth straight ODI series. The game got off to a delayed start and Dhoni made the obvious decision to bowl on a damp pitch that offered some help to the seamers. Ishant Sharma, bowling a fuller length here, removed Chris Gayle and along with Ashish Nehra, didn’t allow West Indies to get off to a breezy start. Ishant hit the good length and pinged the off-stump line and Nehra got some seam movement into the right-handed batsmen. Sarwan hit a gorgeous on-the-up square drive against Ishant in the sixth over to break free but just as he started to find his rhythm, the rains came down again to kill the contest.

Ponting hits back at 'hypocrite' Fletcher

Ricky Ponting has labelled Duncan Fletcher a “hypocrite” after the former England coach’s comments that Australia had no right to claim the moral high ground on Spirit of Cricket issues

Ricky Ponting has labelled Duncan Fletcher a “hypocrite” after the former England coach’s comments that Australia had no right to claim the moral high ground on Spirit of Cricket issues. While Ponting maintained he had not complained excessively about the hosts’ “ordinary” time-wasting late on the final day in the drawn Cardiff Test, Andy Flower, the current England mentor, said the captain “made a meal” of the incident. As England’s last two batsmen held on they sent on the 12th man Bilal Shafayat and the physiotherapist Steve McCaig to prevent the visitors from delivering more overs. “[Fletcher] is sort of saying he didn’t condone what they did the other day,” Ponting said. “It seemed a little bit hypocritical, some of the stuff he had to say.”Fletcher wrote in the Guardian about Ponting putting pressure on the umpires at Sophia Gardens and their sledging. “If any side in the world doesn’t play within the spirit of the game it’s Ponting’s Australians, yet here he is sitting in judgment on England because he’s frustrated that his bowlers failed to complete the job,” he said. “Ponting getting frustrated – does that remind you of anything?”Ponting yelled at Fletcher on his way to the dressing room after he was run-out by Gary Pratt, the substitute fielder, at Trent Bridge in 2005. “We are good mates, Duncan and I,” Ponting said wryly at Lord’s. “I’m not one little bit worried at all about what Duncan has had to say. He is an irrelevant person in my world and probably in the cricketing world right at the moment.”The chapter adds more tension before Thursday’s second Test at Lord’s, but don’t expect any reduction in the number or intensity of exchanges between players. On the final day in Cardiff Kevin Pietersen and Mitchell Johnson argued during the warm-ups and Stuart Broad and Peter Siddle bumped shoulders in the middle before the emotional finish. Siddle also hit Graeme Swann with a series of painful short balls, but Swann responded with an incredibly valuable 31.”It is not an Ashes series without a few of those [incidents],” England’s captain Andrew Strauss said. “As pressure builds, that strains people and once they are put under pressure they react in a number of different ways. One thing which I think is important is that the series continues to be played in a good manner and I certainly think on those first five days, it was played in that manner.”The Australians are often accused of pushing – or breaking – the rules but maintain they adhere to the over-riding Spirit of Cricket and their own stricter code. Steve Waugh has been at Lord’s this week and felt neither team was particularly out of order in Cardiff.Ponting is Waugh’s successor and has no problems with the conduct of his team. “I don’t think I have ever been pulled up for anything outside of playing within the spirit of the game,” Ponting said. “We have always had the finger pointed at us about that sort of stuff. But we never seem to get in too much trouble from the authorities about the spirit of the game.”He said the fall-out from the time wasting had been “overcooked”. “There is so much hype around the series that little things like that can turn into really big things,” he said. “The entire game, I felt, was played in terrific spirit, it was on for young and old out on the field as we saw with the Siddle and Swann battle. But otherwise it was a great Test match.”In 2005 the Australians were considered too friendly with their opponents and fell to a 2-1 series loss. Strauss said the circumstances and personnel for this contest were different and the dynamic from previous battles had changed. “Players do what feels natural to them,” he said.

Teixeira could be next Livermore at WBA

With 17 games played in the Championship so far this season, only three outfield players have played more minutes than West Brom captain Jake Livermore, who has appeared in all but two of their league games in this campaign.

During those appearances, the 31-year-old, who is currently valued at £2.25m according to Transfermarkt, has played in the central-midfield and defensive-midfield positions, as well as grabbing an assist in their 1-0 win over Birmingham City back in October.

Despite being a regular figure for Ismael this season, Livermore is one of West Brom’s oldest players and has a contract that’s set to expire in the summer, which says to us that his time at the Midlands club could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

With this in mind, the Baggies could already have their ideal long-term replacement for the veteran who has made a total of 172 appearances for the club, with 19-year-old midfielder Aurio Teixeira.

As a product of West Brom’s youth academy, Teixeira has made 23 appearances and scored one goal for their U18 side and 12 appearances for their U23 side with one assist under his belt.

So far this season, Teixeira has made seven league appearances for West Brom’s U23 side, playing as a central-midfielder, right-midfielder and as a right-back on occasions, highlighting his versatility.

Also, Teixeira has been described as being a “very intelligent footballer with a high football IQ”, as well as being “tenacious in his game and another combative midfield player who uses his body well” by U18s manager Peter Gilbert, which should be very exciting for the Baggies fans to have a player such as Teixeira with those attributes in their youth ranks.

This could also make him a solid long-term replacement for Livermore given how the senior West Brom midfielder has had no issue showing his tenacity on the pitch, racking up a total of 33 yellow cards during his time at The Hawthorns as well as making an average of 1.9 tackles per game in the league this season.

Moving forward, if Teixeira can keep playing regularly for West Brom’s U23 side, he definitely has the potential to start knocking on Ismael’s door to get some minutes in the senior side to give himself the chance to show he has what it takes to play alongside the senior players and potentially go on to become Livermore’s long-term heir.
