Jacob Oram and Ross Taylor have returned from injury and been named in New Zealand’s 13-man squad for two Twenty20s against India, but there appears growing concern for Kyle Mills.Mills missed New Zealand’s last Twenty20, a one-run loss to Australia in Sydney recently, due to an Achilles tendon problem, and his situation was still unclear.”He’s had an ultrasound scan which showed no tear in the tendon so it might be inflammation of the sheath, we are just not quite sure,” said New Zealand’s convener of selectors Glenn Turner.Mills has been replaced by Ewen Thompson, the Central Districts left-arm fast bowler, who made his debut in a Twenty20 against West Indies in December. “He will give the side additional strength as a specialist new ball and swing bowler,” said Turner.Oram, who missed the Australia tour owing to a calf strain, has been included but will play only as a batsman. Jesse Ryder, the hard hitting left-hander, had his tour of Australia cut short after the rotator cuff injury that flared up in training earlier did not respond sufficiently to treatment. He has replaced Peter Fulton and Taylor’s return, after missing the SCG clash due to a leg injury, strengthens the batting. The Otago pair of Nathan McCullum and Ian Butler have been retained after solid debuts in Sydney. The Twenty20s will be played in Christchurch and Wellington on February 25 and 27.New Zealand Twenty20 squad: Daniel Vettori (capt), Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Nathan McCullum, Iain O’Brien, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Ewen Thompson.

Leeds target O’Brien has release clause

Leeds United transfer target Lewis O’Brien reportedly has a £10million release contract in his new Huddersfield Town contract.

The Lowdown: Leeds still keen on O’Brien

The Whites spent much of the summer transfer window being linked with a move for the midfielder, but he ended up remaining at Huddersfield.

He has since signed a new four-year contract with the Terriers, but a revelation that has now emerged suggests Leeds could still get their man.

The Latest: Release clause revealed

According to Football Insider, a Huddersfield source has confirmed to them that O’Brien has a release clause of £10million, meaning the Whites could get their man if they are willing to pay that amount.

It is claimed that that is less than Leeds actually bid for the 22-year-old in the summer, with an overall offer of £13million supposedly tabled.

The Verdict: Worth the money?

It is debatable as to whether or not O’Brien is worth as much as £10million, but he is an influential player in the Championship and a long-term prospect.

He won Huddersfield’s Player of the Year award in 2019/20, also scoring six goals and registering eight assists for them.

With Kalvin Phillips possibly on the move in the not-too-distant future, O’Brien could be viewed as someone who could help fill the void.

'We've turned into a tight-knit group' – Clarke

Australia’s ageing and ailing Test squad has learnt that it didn’t need botox jabs to conceal its fatigue after a disappointing 2008. What it required was a proper injection of youth

Australia’s ageing and ailing Test squad has learnt that it didn’t need botox jabs to conceal its fatigue after a disappointing 2008. What it required was a proper injection of youth. Australia fielded their most inexperienced side for 20 years when they took the field at the Wanderers and a fortnight later they had wrapped up a series victory and discovered some seriously talented players for the future. The retirement of Matthew Hayden and injuries to key men Stuart Clark, Brett Lee and Andrew Symonds – all of whom are over 32 – allowed Australia to try out fresh faces like Phillip Hughes, Ben Hilfenhaus and Marcus North, all of whom debuted in Johannesburg. The remaining senior men have been reinvigorated by the energy of their younger colleagues.”We’ve turned into a very tight-knit group,” the vice-captain Michael Clarke said. “That’s been one of our major strengths over here, how well everyone has got along. There’s all this youth, all this enthusiasm, the boys have trained their absolute backsides off, but we’re all having a really good tour together. Everyone is getting on so well.”It holds us in good stead for the future. It makes a big difference when you’ve got a good bunch of guys around you. I was talking to my old man the other day and he said you guys look unbelievable on the field, everyone is having a great time, and that’s honestly the way it is. We’re just out there having a great time, playing well, winning – we’re flying.”Hughes has been the standout performer after making twin centuries in Durban butNorth was also brilliant in compiling a hundred on debut at the Wanderers. Hilfenhaus has bowled superbly and deserved greater rewards, while other men to have joined the squad in the past few months, players like Andrew McDonald and Peter Siddle, have played key roles in the series win. It’s only three months since Australia suffered demoralising defeats to South Africa in Perth and Melbourne that led to their first home series loss in 16 years. But the touring squad has such a fresh appearance that Hughes, North, Hilfenhaus and McDonald have never played in a Test defeat. The same can be said of Doug Bollinger and Bryce McGain, who have not yet been used on the trip.”Sometimes when the young guys come in they play with freedom,” the veteran batsman Simon Katich said. “There are no scars from the past. A few of them didn’t play in Australia so they didn’t carry any baggage from that series. The beauty is that the guys that they’ve picked have been in good form, they’ve gone in with confidence, they’ve been playing well.”Following their enormous efforts in Johannesburg and Durban, the players are enjoying a much-deserved break in Cape Town and will not return to training until after the weekend. It has given them opportunities to see the sights with their families or, in several cases, with their team-mates, and the captain Ricky Ponting said that for such a young group it was an advantage to be forming new friendships away from home.”Being away on an overseas tour makes [bonding] a lot easier,” Ponting said. “You get to know the guys and get to know what makes them tick on and off the cricket field. The week we had in Potch [before the first Test] was good for us to get together and bond and get to know each other. We’ve taken that onto the field and played some great cricket.”After the series wraps up in the third Test, which starts at Newlands on Friday, the next challenge for Australia’s selectors is to work out how to combine the successful new players and the returning proven veterans into one outfit. The selectors have said there are no guarantees for the older men like Lee and Symonds, but Clarke said having so many highly qualified players could only be a good thing.”It’s all healthy competition,” Clarke said. “Since I’ve played international cricket there’s always been someone in front of you that you’re trying to catch or be as good as, or there are plenty of people behind you trying to take your spot.”There’s going to be pressure on the selectors there to work out what the best mix is. If everyone is fit, they’ve just got to work out what the best mix is for who we’re playing and where we’re playing them. It’s great competition, it’s very healthy for the team.”

Andy Mitten provides Paul Pogba update

Manchester United could be set for a significant boost after an update was provided on Paul Pogba’s future at the club.

What’s the story?

The star midfielder has entered the final year of his contract at United and is yet to commit his future to the 20-time English champions, leading to speculation that he could depart over the coming months.

Now though, The Athletic’s Andy Mitten has revealed that the Old Trafford outfit’s hierarchy have tabled a significant offer to Pogba in an attempt to keep him in the red half of Manchester.

Mitten’s report states that: “United have made a Pogba a very good offer to stay at Old Trafford, which will make him one of the world’s best-paid footballers and the second-highest earner at the club on close to £400,000 per week.”

It goes on to claim that the France international is “open to re-signing”, although he’s understandably taking his time over what is a huge decision at a crucial stage in his career.

Fans should be excited

French giants Paris Saint-Germain were heavily linked with the 28-year-old in the previous window before their shock move for Lionel Messi meant Pogba’s arrival was no longer a financial possibility.

It’s believed that the Ligue 1 outfit, Juventus and Real Madrid are still interested in the creative talent’s signature, and he recently addressed a potential move back to Turin during the international break.

“I always speak to my former Juventus teammates, like Paulo (Dybala),” said Pogba, who was then asked about what lies ahead for him. “I’m in Manchester, I’ve still got a contract there for a year, and then we’ll see.”

But United fans will be encouraged and excited by Mitten’s latest revelation regardless of the player’s latest comments. Pogba and his controversial agent have often flirted with the possibility of seeking pastures new in the past only to stay put on English shores and carry on regardless.

And a large section of the fanbase will be hoping this ongoing saga ends in a similar fashion, given the importance of the 6 foot 2 dynamo to Ole Gunnar Solsjaer’s charges.

Since the beginning of 2020/21, Pogba has bagged six goals and an impressive 18 assists in his 51 appearances for the Red Devils, illustrating his truly world-class form of late.

Only time will tell whether the World Cup winner puts pen to paper on fresh terms at United, but the signs are certainly promising at this moment in time.

Sheff Utd fans slam Olsen vs Millwall

Many Sheffield United fans have been left slamming Robin Olsen for his role in Millwall’s opening goal in Tuesday night’s clash in the EFL Championship.

Jed Wallace scored what looked to be a cross as the ball looped over the Sweden international and into the back of the net to put the Lions 1-0 up at Bramall Lane early on in the first half.

Olsen should not have been beaten from that kind of angle, and Slaviša Jokanović will certainly view it as a very cheap goal to give away.

Nonetheless, it is no surprise at all to see so many Blades supporters voicing their anger and frustration at the goalkeeper for letting that one past him, and he will no doubt be hoping that he can make amends in the second half.
