Spurs retain interest in United’s Martial

An update has emerged on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, regarding Tottenham’s interest in the Frenchman.

What’s the talk?

According to MEN, fellow Premier League side Spurs have retained an interest in Martial.

The report claims that Spurs are still keen on the French forward, three years on from Daniel Levy enquiring about a potential deal for the ex-Monaco man.

Time to go

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must sanction an exit for Martial either in this window or the next. If Tottenham’s interest in the striker is genuine then the Red Devils chief must ruthlessly axe him from his squad and allow him to join Spurs – provided they offer a reasonable fee for his services.

Martial scored four goals in 22 Premier League appearances last term, including 17 starts, which highlights the struggles he has had at Old Trafford of late. He has not been able to provide consistent performances and nail down his spot in the XI, which was further emphasised last weekend.

The attacker was given the opportunity to stake a claim for his place in the side against Southampton, but failed to take it. He played 59 minutes in the 1-1 draw and received a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.13 as he managed one shot, zero key passes, and was dispossessed twice.

After the performance against the Saints, Jamie O’Hara was scathing in his criticism of Martial. He told TalkSport: “But Martial was shocking, it was a really bad performance from him.

“He just plays like he’s not bothered whether he plays well or not. It’s a weird attitude to have.

“When I used to go on a football pitch, I was just obsessed with trying to be the best player out there.

“Martial just plays like he doesn’t care whether he’s good or not. It’s just it’s weird how he plays because he’s got so much talent.”

Therefore, £180k-per-week dud should be moved on as quickly as possible for United to then replace him, or afford more opportunities to younger players in the squad.

United should not have any players in the team who are not 100% committed to the cause, as it sets a bad example to other players. Tottenham’s interest in Martial gives the club the perfect opportunity to cash in on him and make some of their money back.

Prass explica gol sofrido contra o Coritiba: 'Ele pensou rápido'

The Stanford Superstars sent out a major warning to England ahead of Saturday’s main event as they swept aside Middlesex by 58 runs. Five matches into the tournament and at last there was an innings where the batsmen dominated or, more accurately, one batsman as Andre Fletcher sped to a career-best unbeaten 90 with the Superstars racking up 173 for 4, comfortably the highest total of the week. Middlesex didn’t threaten to get close.Fletcher, who has four one-day internationals under his belt, secured his place in the US$20 million match with a superb display of cleaning hitting. It was finally a taste of what Twenty20 cricket is meant to be about – boundaries. Fletcher managed seven sixes off his own bat as the Superstars collected 14 in the innings. Ahead of the match the outfield had been given a close-cropping to try and increase the number of boundaries, but the way Fletcher, Kieron Pollard and Sylvester Joseph connected the length of the grass didn’t matter. One of Fletcher’s sixes sailed out of the ground as he reached fifty off 45 balls, and the eye-catching aspect of his batting was the majority of his biggest hits were from authentic shots, not slogs. Fletcher wasn’t on his own in managing some massive blows as Joseph launched one effort which carried over 100 metres in the stands.Fletcher kept battering the Middlesex bowlers, taking 10 off two balls from Steven Finn in the penultimate over to give him an outside chance of a century. But the final-over glory went to Pollard who crashed Tyron Henderson’s first three balls onto the grass banks. The Superstars showed the value of not panicking if the early rate isn’t electric: after nine overs they were 51 for 2 and the last five overs produced 69 runs.It was a far better innings for the young stars than their more famous colleagues. Chris Gayle collected a second-ball duck, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul also failed to spend much time in the middle and Ramnaresh Sarwan lofted down to long-on against Shaun Udal.Gayle’s failure leaves him short of practice ahead of the match against England having missed the first warm-up against Trinidad and Tobago to visit ill family members. However, he can count himself unlucky after receiving a horrid grubber from Tim Murtagh, which barely rose above ankle height and would have taken middle stump.Asad Rauf, the umpire, asked for confirmation from the TV official as to whether the ball pitched on leg stump – which was swift in arriving – and again called in the services of his colleague to determine Chanderpaul’s bottom edge. However, curiously there was no evidence from Hotspot, but Simon Taufel gave the decision based on a sound from the stump microphone and Eldine Baptiste, the Superstars coach, confirmed Chanderpaul “got a thin one”. But despite the early breakthroughs Middlesex couldn’t keep control and missed Murali Kartik, who had gone back to India, in the middle overs. The county had the batting talent to make a decent fist of the chase, but needed a solid start. Daren Powell made sure it didn’t eventuate as he dislodged Ed Joyce with a short ball into the body, which was deflected down into the stumps. Another aspect of the Superstars’ performance was their impressive fielding and Rayad Emrit took a sharp caught-and-bowled chance to remove Neil Dexter.Middlesex briefly rallied with a stand of 36 between their two best Twenty20 players, Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan, but Morgan scooped Darren Sammy’s first ball straight to short fine-leg. To cap off a fine team effort Sarwan, not always the fleetest-foot of fielders, sprinted to his left to hold a full-length catch at deep midwicket to remove Ben Scott. The Superstars showed they have all the bases covered, now all they need to do is repeat this performance on Saturday for a million dollars each. No pressure, lads.

Rangers: Nikola Katic set for Hajduk loan

According to Jordan Campbell, Nikola Katic is on the verge of sealing a loan move to Hajduk Split from Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: Katic needs game time

As the Gers won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years last term, Katic unfortunately did not play a single minute (Transfermarkt) – a bad injury in pre-season kept him out of the whole campaign (BBC).

He now needs game-time, and a solution appears to have been found.

The Latest: Katic to make loan move

As per The Athletic reporter Campbell on Twitter, £1.44m-valued Katic (Transfermarkt) is set to move out on loan.

He tweeted: “Understand that Nikola Katic is heading on loan to a Croatian club. Rangers have built up his fitness this summer but he needs to play football after such a long time out. Expect that there will be a recall clause in the deal, as is common when a player is being monitored.”

The Verdict: Perfect

It is quite obvious that Katic needs to play. After not featuring at all last season, he has not been picked by Steven Gerrard so far this term either. With Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Jack Simpson and Leon Balogun to choose from in terms of centre-backs, Gerrard has plenty of options in that role.

This loan deal for Katic is not yet complete, but all involved should hope it gets completed before the window slams shut later today so that the Croatian can enjoy a fresh start elsewhere and make up for lost time.

With the clever decision to add in a recall clause, this feels like a win-win for all parties involved.

In other news, this former Gers ace could complete a shock move across the city.

Blue retain title with crushing win

India Blue retained the Challenger Trophy, putting together their most emphatic performance of an unbeaten campaign in the final in Cuttack

India Blue retained the Challenger Trophy, putting together their most emphatic performance of an unbeaten campaign in the final in Cuttack. As bright as Blue’s show was in the eight-wicket thrashing, so was the dullness of Red’s display. Their batsmen put up a paltry 151 and their bowlers failed to strike early to make the contest a bit more exciting.Blue had successfully defended targets in their two games, and if Red’s decision to bat first was prompted by a thought of breaking that trend, it surely didn’t work. They were bowled out for 151 in 43 overs. Ashok Dinda and Siddharth Trivedi struck the early blows to leave Red at 72 for 6, and if not for a 66-run stand between captain S Badrinath and Praveen Kumar, Red might have well folded up for much less.If the Red’s batting was lacklustre, the start for Blue put out any doubts as to who the winner would be. Ajinkya Rahane continuously pinged the off side for fours, sometimes a touch risky, and overshadowed Robin Uthappa, the leading run-getter in the tournament. Uthappa was tentative to start with, and his timing far from perfect, but he made up for the sluggish beginning by taking on Piyush Chawla. When Uthappa holed out in the deep off the same bowler, the openers had put on 93 in 14.3 overs, effectively closing out the contest.Things did not go to plan from the start for Red. After playing off a maiden over first up, Parthiv Patel was lbw to Dinda in the second over. Rohit Sharma, whose century against India Green helped Red to the final, was teased with deliveries outside off stump from Dinda, and the persistence paid off when he edged a drive to Virat Kohli at second slip.Badrinath and M Vijay then played with caution to see off the new ball. The first ten overs brought just 25, but Vijay decided to step up the rate against a tiring Irfan Pathan in the 11th, taking a six and a four in an over that fetched 12. Aggression got the better of Vijay; trying to charge Trivedi and loft him over his head, he only nicked the ball to Dinesh Karthik.Jaydev Shah was bowled off an inside edge, and Trivedi got his third when he foxed Abhishek Nayar with a slower delivery – committed to a back-foot drive, the batsman didn’t middle it well and the ball lobbed to Kohli at cover. It was time for Red to rebuild, but Badrinath lost another partner when Chawla’s attempted strike over mid-on was caught by Chetanya Nanda, running back from mid-off. Badrinath, though, found support from Praveen. Badrinath scored just four from his first 20 deliveries, and relied on nudging the ball around for singles.Praveen’s entry put in some momentum; he hit Ashwin for a straight six and in the next over both he and Badrinath took boundaries off Nanda. Praveen went along at a good clip, but he was dismissed by a straighter one from Nanda. With the tailenders exposed, Badrinath had to keep the bulk of the strike. However, he departed soon after Praveen, beaten by an offspinner from R Ashwin as he attempted to cut the ball fine. Ashwin, with eight wickets, finished the top wicket-taker in the tournament.Badrinath would have also expected quick wickets from Praveen in Blue’s chase, but he and L Balaji failed to keep the runs in check to exert any pressure. Rahane started with two fours off consecutive deliveries from Praveen, though both shots weren’t too convincing. The off-side driving was only to get better as Blue raced towards their target. Uthappa, the in-form batsmen for Blue, surprisingly had got just 7 off 20 balls in the first ten overs. An attempted loft off Praveen didn’t connect but still rolled to the boundary. However, with Chawla brought in the 13th over, Uthappa changed gears rigthtaway with ten runs off the first two deliveries. He then came down the track to hit medium-pacer Vinay Kumar, his Karnataka team-mate, for a six. After he fell, Kohli stroked his way to an unbeaten 35. Rahane brought up his half-century, in the process taking a six off Mohnish Parmar. He was trapped in front by the same bowler, leaving way, perhaps fittingly, for captain Yuvraj Singh to guide his team to victory.

Final one-dayer washed out

The final one-day international between South Africa and Bangladesh at East London has been washed out

The final one-day international between South Africa and Bangladesh at East London has been washed out. The weather had been poor through the night and there was no let-up during the morning ahead of the day/night encounter, leaving the umpires no option but to abandon the game an hour before the start. It means South Africa take the series 2-0 and hold onto second place in the one-day rankings as the focus now shifts to the two-Test series which begins in Bloemfontein next week. South Africa start as strong favourites and should have far too much fire power for the visitors on bouncy surfaces. Dale Steyn caused problems during the first two ODIs and looked decidedly sharp. The Bangladesh batsmen can expect plenty of short stuff in the longer format. However, the rest of South Africa’s pace attack has been less than impressive so far this season, sending down a huge number of wides in the one-dayers against Kenya and Bangladesh. Morne Morkel, who begun his domestic season brilliantly, has had major problems with his radar, while the performances of Johann Louw and Albie Morkel suggest the pace ranks are not as well as stocked as previously thought.Makhaya Ntini is likely to return for the Tests after racking up the overs in the SuperSport series, while Monde Zondeki remains on the fringes after being overlooked for the ODIs against Bangladesh. The batting, though, is causing fewer concerns despite the suspension of Herschelle Gibbs. He wouldn’t have been considered for the Tests, where Neil McKenzie has formed a solid combination with Graeme Smith, who returned form injury on Sunday with 65 in Benoni, while Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers have all spent time in the middle during the ODIs. The two Tests against Bangladesh offer further opportunity for fine tuning before the tour of Australia next month.

Baker let Adkins down vs Crawley

Charlton are starting to build some momentum after a stunning 6-1 win over Crawley in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Nigel Adkins’ side lost four of their first five competitive fixtures and picked up one point from those games, a 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day, in a dreadful opening few weeks of the 2021/22 campaign.

They managed to turn things around last weekend with a 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra, before dishing out a 6-1 hammering to Crawley on Tuesday. Josh Davison scored twice, with Corey Taylor, Elliot Lee and Mason Burstow also scoring, along with an own goal from Crawley’s George Francomb.

There are always positives and negatives that can be taken from games and the latter for this match came in the form of Charlie Baker’s display at right-back.

The teenager full-back was handed an opportunity by Adkins to show that he can come in and perform to a high standard, potentially with the view to him getting more chances in League One this season. However, he was unable to do that as he struggled on the pitch despite the 6-1 win.

Baker was handed a SofaScore rating of 6.6 for his display, whilst eight of the other starters achieved scores of 7.1 or higher. Per SofaScore, the 18-year-old gave away possession of the ball 20 times from 60 touches, which means that he gave Crawley the ball once in every three touches. With a pass success rate of 66%, this suggests that he was unable to offer a reliable option in possession as he consistently failed to find a teammate with his passes and loose touches.

Only three of his seven attempted long passes and crosses came off and he registered zero shots on target or chances created. This means that he was not able to offer a consistent attacking threat down the right flank to support his teammates.

Defensively, the full-back also failed to impress. Per SofaScore, he did not complete a single tackle in the 90 minutes he played, whilst making two interceptions, two clearances and zero blocks. He also lost 60% of his defensive duels, losing five of his eight aerial battles and one of his two ground duels.

He let himself down as he was off the pace at both ends of the pitch. Hopefully, however, he will be given a chance to make up for this howler of a performance in the next round of the competition and show that this display was a one-off.
