Independentemente do resultado, muitas coisas fluíram.

Update on Leeds’ interest in Lewis O’Brien

Leeds United and Huddersfield Town are ‘not a million miles apart in their valuation’ of Lewis O’Brien, according to journalist Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Leeds keen on O’Brien move

Marcelo Bielsa may still be looking to do some transfer business this summer, despite the new Premier League season getting underway this weekend.

One player with whom the Whites have been linked is Huddersfield midfielder O’Brien, who started 39 of his side’s 46 Championship games in 2020/21.

The Latest: Smyth provides update

An update has now been provided by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth, who claims that Leeds remain interested in the 22-year-old.

While it is stated that ‘nothing is imminent’ currently, it is thought that positive talks are taking place between the two clubs over a move.

The Verdict: Exciting long-term prospect

While O’Brien may not necessarily come straight in as a regular starter for Leeds, he could be considered both a reliable squad player and a long-term prospect, having been lauded as a ‘superb player’ by Noel Whelan.

The youngster averaged an impressive two tackles per game in the Championship last season, outlining the Kalvin Phillips-esque tenacity he possesses in the middle of the park.

O’Brien could afford the Leeds star more of a breather throughout the campaign and be a strong option in domestic cup competitions, if of course the Whites can go on to seal the deal.

In other news, a transfer update has emerged linking Leeds with a new signing this summer. Find out who it is here.

Withdrawing from Champions Trophy would hurt Australia

Shafqat Naghmi, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief operating officer, believes Australia would be hurting their own team if they do not take part in the Champions Trophy in September

Cricinfo staff24-Jun-2008Shafqat Naghmi, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief operating officer, believes Australia would be hurting their own team if they do not take part in the Champions Trophy in September. Australia withdrew from their March tour of the country due to safety and security concerns and Reg Dickason, the side’s security consultant, will travel to Pakistan this week to monitor the Asia Cup tournament.Naghmi said in the Sydney Morning Herald it would be disappointing if Australia did not visit for the Champions Trophy. “They would be hurting their own team,” he said. “They have to weigh up their loyalty to their team, or pull out on account of a security concern that I can assure you is unfounded.”Geoff Lawson, the Pakistan coach, has remained in the country and Naghmi said the Australians should follow his lead. “If terrorists had a point to prove, they could have targeted [Lawson] or his Australian staff,” Naghmi said. “But this hasn’t been the situation, and I don’t think sports terrorism is on the list.”The fans are very disappointed that Australia has not been here for ten years now – especially when England, South Africa and New Zealand have toured – and there is a feeling among them that a lot of the security concerns have been blown out of proportion. That’s not to say there is hostility towards them, just disappointment and a little frustration.”Ricky Ponting said in the paper the players “haven’t even talked about” the event in Pakistan, although last week he revealed there was some apprehension about the trip. England and New Zealand also have concerns about playing in the Champions Trophy and there have been fears of a significant player boycott. Australia are scheduled to tour Pakistan for a one-day series in 2009 and a Test series in 2010.

Pundit says Tottenham would consider cashing-in on Ndombele

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge reckons that Tottenham would sell Tanguy Ndombele for £50m this summer.

The Frenchman arrived in north London for a club-record fee with a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders following his ravishing form for Lyon, notably against Manchester City in the Champions League.

However, Ndombele hasn’t been able to replicate that form, with his two-years in north London overshadowed by some lacklustre performances and constant injury problems.

The 24-year-old appeared to put his injuries aside last season, turning out 46 times across all competitions.

Ndombele didn’t do enough to earn a place in France’s Euro 2020 squad, though, which meant he was amongst the first crop of players to return to Hotspur Way for the start of pre-season.

But the midfielder didn’t play a single minute in any of Tottenham’s opening three pre-season games, which has once more raised concerns over previous fitness problems he endured under Jose Mourinho.

Asked whether Spurs would consider cashing in on him, Bridge told Football FanCast: “I think they would. £50m can go a long way now. He could prove everyone wrong and turn up next season.

“No one from Spain is going to have the money, though, it’s difficult now, but we can’t sell all of these players we want to get rid of, some are going to have to stay.”

Two England captains fail with the bat

A round-up of the first day in the latest County Championship matches as the competition swings back into action

Cricinfo staff29-Jun-2008First DivisionIt wasn’t a good day for two England captains with the bat at Headingley as Michael Vaughan bagged an 18-ball duck and Paul Collingwood fell for 5 as Durham and Yorkshire traded blows with ball dominating bat. Vaughan was caught behind off Callum Thorp while a strong Durham attack made early inroads. Liam Plunkett grabbed three and then Steve Harmison took out a couple in the middle order. Collingwood wrapped up the innings with three swift strikes with the score on 184. Matthew Hoggard responded with an early wicket, trapping Michael Di Venuto second ball, then it was Hoggard who took the catch at long off to remove Collingwood from Adil Rashid’s fifth ball.Andre Adams’ four wickets helped Nottinghamshire to chip out Hampshire for 293 on the opening day at Southampton. Adams dismissed both openers, taking both Michaels, Carberry and Brown, after the pair had put on 58. Darren Pattinson then removed Michael Lumb and Sean Ervine on 78 before John Crawley and Nic Pothas pushed them on to 173 with a fifth-wicket stand of 95, both batsmen making a fifty. Adams came back to remove the tail with the help of Samit Patel and Charlie Shreck, each of whom took a brace.Click here for a full report on the opening day between Surrey and Kent at The Oval, where the home side laid the foundations for a decent total.Fourteen wickets fell on the first day at Hove as Sussex took on Lancashire. Click here for a report on all the action.Second DivisionSimon Jones reprised the Championship form he showed prior to the Twenty20 as his 5 for 30 proved central in skittling Leicestershire for 120 at Grace Road. Worcestershire consolidated their position by reaching 172 for 2 at the close, already a lead of 52. Vikram Solanki was seven away from a century and added 139 for the second wicket with Daryl Mitchell Kabir Ali did the early damage before Jones made his first mark by removing Matthew Boyce as the home side fell to 42 for 4. Jones then had Jim Allenby taken at slip, fending a short ball off his gloves, and at 78 for 8 three figures was looking unlikely. Jacques du Toit at least prevented that embarrassment, but the lower order was blown away by Jones who ended with his third five-wicket bag of the season.Dawid Malan underlined his potential with a maiden first-class century to lead a Middlesex fightback after a poor start against Northamptonshire at Uxbridge. Johann van der Wath ripped out the top three – including Andrew Strauss for 2, caught behind chasing a wide ball, and Owais Shah for 1 – and Middlesex were in a hole on 36 for 4. Eoin Morgan began the fightback, stroking 66, and added 121 with Malan for the fifth wicket. When Morgan was trapped lbw on the back foot by David Lucas, Malan forged onwards to his hundred off 174 balls. Malan added a further 115 with Ben Scott (50) and was still unbeaten at the close.Alastair Cook made 95 for Essex, but it was Ryan ten Doeschate who stole the show with a century as he rescued the home side on the opening day against Derbyshire at Chelmsford. Both were vital innings after the new ball left Essex on 42 for 3 with Ravi Bopara removed by Jonathan Clare for 7. Cook struck 13 boundaries in his 143-ball innings before he swept Jake Needham to midwicket. A second stumble left Essex on 231 for 7, but ten Doeschate turned the day around with an aggressive century off 123 balls after having to work hard during the first part of his innings. Alex Tudor capped an impressive turnaround as he, too, reached a half-century, passing fifty with a six off Wavell Hinds.New Zealand may be on their way to Scotland, but Hamish Marshall’s century ensured a Kiwi contribution was the talking point of Gloucestershire’s dominant opening day between the showers against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. His patient ton was compiled over 201 minutes, off 145 balls, and included 15 fours and two sixes. He was joined by William Porterfield in a second-wicket stand of 176 as the pair more than made up for losing Kadeer Ali early, caught by Ian Bell off Chris Woakes. Porterfield made his third fifty in 12 first-class matches, reaching 74 before another New Zealander, Chris Martin, got his name on the scoresheet having him caught behind. Gloucestershire will resume on 190 for 2, with Marshall unbeaten on 107.

Bermuda to host Namibia in September

Bermuda are to host Namibia for their next Intercontinental Cup fixture on September 3 at their National Sports Centre (NSC)

Cricinfo staff14-Aug-2008Bermuda are to host Namibia for their next Intercontinental Cup fixture on September 3 at their National Sports Centre (NSC).It will be the second occasion this year that the NSC hosts a game, following several years when it was deemed unfit owing to the poor soil. Such concerns are now a distant memory and Reginald Pearman, the president of the Bermuda Cricket Board, is excited at the prospect of the touring Namibians.”Once again I am pleased to be able to confirm that Bermuda have the opportunity to play at home for the second time this year. The ICC approval for Bermuda to host the Namibia game, confirms that the National Sports Centre, with the hard work of its groundsmen, have prepared and maintained the wicket to the international standards required,” he said.”Bermuda faces a tough team and I encourage all of Bermuda to come out to support your country.”Namibia share the top spot of the Intercontinental Cup table with Scotland, on 82 points, but have two games in hand.
