Steve Howey on Jetro Willems’ potential return to Newcastle

Steve Howey has warned Newcastle United to be cautious when looking to seal a fan favourite’s return to the club.

Jetro Willems is a free agent after turning down a new deal with German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

The left-back previously enjoyed a season-long loan on Tyneside and quickly became a firm favourite among the Toon Army.

Willems, 27, made 20 appearances during his time with the Magpies and scored three goals.

However, he has opted to move on from Frankfurt after failing to make a single appearance last season.

The former Netherlands international is believed to be holding out for a move back to St James’ Park, where he struck up a good relationship with team-mate Allan Saint-Maximin both on and off the pitch.

Steve Bruce is looking to improve his options ahead of a third season at the helm but Howey, who was on Newcastle’s books for more than a decade during his playing days, has warned Willems may not be the perfect financial option.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Howey said: “It could be seen as a no-brainer but sometimes players and their agents think because you’re not paying a transfer fee, the wages should go up. I think parties involved have got to be sensible about it.

“Newcastle can’t be a club trying to get a player for nothing and therefore giving him nothing weekly wage-wise. By the same token, you don’t want a player saying you’re getting me for nothing so I want astronomical wages.”

West Ham dealt Worrall blow

The Athletic have dropped a worrying update on West Ham target Joe Worrall…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor has dropped a concerning update for West Ham in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall. The Hammers are reportedly keen on signing the English defender this summer, but he does not appear to be in any rush to leave the Championship outfit.

In a Q&A this week, Taylor revealed that Worrall is not demanding to leave Forest and the club will only cash in on him if the right offer comes in for his services. The Athletic reported earlier this summer that it would take a fee of £10m, paid largely upfront, to prize him away.

He said:

“A few weeks ago, the answer to this would have been a definite yes. Now it does not feel 100 per cent certain. You still get the sense that, if the right offer comes along, Forest will give serious thought to selling — but it would have to be the right offer.

They have already turned down offers for Brennan Johnson, although they were at a low level and the suggestion is that Joe Worrall is not kicking down doors demanding to be given the opportunity to move.”

Moyes will be gutted

David Moyes will be gutted by this latest update as it could negatively impact West Ham’s chances of being able to land Worrall this summer. If the Englishman is not willing to push for a transfer away from the City Ground then the Hammers will not be able to negotiate a better deal with Forest as they will be unable to use the threat of them keeping an unhappy player. This news seemingly shows Forest that they can keep Worrall at the club without him kicking up a fuss, which could allow them to be tough in negotiations.

The Hammers have an ageing group of central defenders at the club. Issa Diop is Moyes’ only option in that area of the pitch who is below the age of 29, with Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson in their 30’s and Fabian Balbuena turning 30 next month. Therefore, signing a talented young centre-back, like Worrall, could be a shrewd piece of business by the club.

He only turned 24 back in January and could add some much-needed youth to the ranks. However, despite his young age, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard once hailed Worrall as a “leader” during his time on loan in Scotland and claimed that he will captain any team he plays for in the future.

He said:

“He will be a captain of whatever team he plays for.”

“He is a leader and he stepped up today.”

This goes some way to showing that Worrall has the mentality and quality to come into the London Stadium and be a good addition to Moyes’ squad and that is why the Scot will be disappointed by this update.

Hopefully, the situation changes between now and the end of the window and the club are able to snap him up for a reasonable price.

AND in other news, Moyes must act swiftly to land “explosive” goal machine, West Ham fans would love him…

Dagnall injury update

Leicestershire CCC20-Jun-2002Charles Dagnall launches his bid for a first team return with three one-day matches next week. The former Warwickshire seamer, who joined the Grace Road staff this summer, has undergone a manipulative operation in an attempt to cure the hip problem which has been plaguing him since the early part of the season.Although he has played in the Championship games against Lancashire,Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire he has not appeared in any of Leicestershire’s one-day games. But he is hopeful that the latest treatment will sort out the hip problem and plans to test it out next week. Dagnall has been pencilled in to play in the one-day matches against Northants and Middlesex for the Second X1 on Tuesday and Thursday, plus the one-day match against the Indian tourists at Grace Road on Wednesday.Dagnall said: “If all goes well I will bowl 10 overs on each day, and that should give me a good idea whether the treatment has worked.”In addition to Dagnall there could be some other players given the opportunity to show what they can do against the Indians. Youngsters Stephen Adshead and Ashley Wright along with Rob Cunliffe, who is recovering from a broken finger, are all likely to be included.

Leeds keen on signing goalkeeper Klaesson

Leeds United are interested in signing Valerenga goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson this summer, according to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Backup goalkeeper required

The Whites are in need of signing a new goalkeeper this summer, with Kiko Casilla joining La Liga side Elche on a season-long loan deal.

Illan Meslier is the clear first-choice between the sticks, but if the Frenchman got injured, there is currently insufficient cover for him.

The Latest: Hay provides key update

Hay has now provided an update on Leeds’ search for a new ‘keeper, claiming Victor Orta ‘holds a long-standing interest’ in Klaesson.

Both the 20-year-old and Levante’s Dani Cardenas are considered ‘suitable deputies’ for Meslier, as the Whites’ productive summer continues.

Klaesson has already made 55 appearances for Valerenga, despite his tender years, as well as winning five caps for Norway’s Under-21s.

The Verdict: Ideal Meslier deputy

Klaesson looks a perfect man to come in and provide competition for Meslier, with the youngster sure to be content with a squad role to begin with given his inexperience in a top league.

He wouldn’t be demanding regular starts, but could be given opportunities to shine in the domestic cups, maturing over time and potentially even being a future No.1, should Meslier move on.

In other news, Leeds’ hopes of signing one player this summer are reportedly fading. Read more here.
