Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill is ‘interested’ in becoming the club’s new director of football, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Hoops’ DoF talks

Celtic remain on the hunt for a DoF after their talks with Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin failed to lead to a Parkhead move.

The Irishman, who is a massive Hoops fan, was closing in on a Scotland switch, with reports back in March suggesting a deal was 90% done.

However, stories last month claimed that Harkin, City’s football pathways and partnerships manager, wants to remain loyal at the Etihad.

The Latest: O’Neill links

Football Insider shared a story on Wednesday, linking O’Neill with a Parkhead return.

A Celtic source informed the site that the 69-year-old has thrown his name into the hat and is ‘interested’ in becoming the Hoops’ DoF as the club’s summer rebuild continues.

The report adds that the former Celtic manager, who won nine honours in the dugout with Celtic and Leicester City, would be keen on a more executive role following Ange Postecoglou’s arrival as manager.

The Verdict: A smart move?

It could well turn out to be a smart move by the Hoops to bring a man with O’Neill’s experience back to Celtic Park in a role higher up.

Postecoglou would be able to go to the Northern Irishman for advice in his first season in Glasgow, should he wish to do so, and the pair could even work closely together on transfer targets.

O’Neill knows just what it takes to succeed in Scotland, and even though he wouldn’t be in the dugout alongside Postecoglou, having his presence back at the club could help the Hoops in their quest to win back the Scottish Premiership from Rangers.

وقال أمير مرتضى خلال مداخلة هاتفية ببرنامج “الماتش” المذاع على قناة “صدى البلد”: “الزمالك ليس متعنتًا مع اللاعبين، لو أي لاعب أثبت احترامه وحبه ورغبته في الاستمرار من الوارد أن نُعيد التفكير في مصيره، لكن الأهم هو نادي الزمالك لأنه أكبر منا جميعًا”.

وأضاف: “لا أقلق إذا وقع أي لاعب لأي ناد آخر، لأن قميص الزمالك أو الأهلي يُضيف لأي أحد، ونحن نقيم اللاعبين بحجمهم الطبيعي سواء داخل الفريق أو لدى أي نادٍ آخر، ولا داع للقلق”.

وأردف: “نحن أنشأنا هذا الفريق والزمالك لا يقف على لاعب، لأنه لا يوجد لاعب أو إداري يحصد بطولة بمفرده”.

وواصل: “الموسم الماضي تم اتخاذ قرارات كارثية، منها أن الزمالك لعب بطولة إفريقيا بحارسين فقط، وعلى مستوى المهاجمين تم التعاقد مع مروان حمدي ولم يتم الاستفادة منه، وتم ضم سيف الجزيري وهو لا يحق له القيد إفريقيًا، هناك أخطاء أثرت على الفريق وكان من الطبيعي أن نخرج من دوري الأبطال”.

وتابع: “كل ما يتردد حول تساؤل فيريرا عن لاعبين بعينهم غير صحيح، فهناك لاعبون يسوقون أنفسهم عن طريق الوكلاء، ولو الزمالك احتاج لأي لاعب يعرف كيف يتعاقد معه”.

واستأنف: “فيريرا يركز في كل مباراة ومعه هؤلاء اللاعبين الذين سيستكملون الموسم، وأكد لي أنهم أفضل من الفريق الذي دربه في الولاية الأولى، ومن المبكر الحكم على مصيرهم ونحن ما زلنا في نصف الموسم”.

وأكمل: “نحن واثقون في اللاعبين الحاليين إنهم سيسعون لمصالحة الجماهير، وأي قرار سيتم اتخاذه لن يكون عاطفيًا”.

وأوضح مسؤول الزمالك موقف النادي من استقدام حكام أجانب لإدارة مبارياتهم في الدوري، قائلًا: “هذا الأمر يعود لمجلس الإدارة، ورئيسه مرتضى منصور له رأي في هذه المسألة”.

واختتم: “نحن تحملنا أمورًا كثيرة، نريد أن نعرف جدول الدوري والفرق التي نواجهها أولًا، ولا يجب أن نختذل كل الأمور في المنظومة التحكيمية فقط”.

With just one round of matches remaining, Harare SportsClub have 70 points, a total which none of the other five teams can surpass.Second placed Old Hararians have 50 points from nine matches and the maximum they can reach is 60, while Old Georgians and Takashinga, who both have 40 points from eight matches, can only get a maximum of 60 points. The weekend matches were however, marred by the absence of official umpires.At Harare Sports Club, the match was reduced to 25 overs a side. Universals batted first and were 147 for nine after their 25 overs, with a top score of 24 by Neeten Chouhan, while Blessing Mahwire made 23. The hosts reached 149 for four in the 25th over with national team captain Stuart Carlisle scoring 53, while Mark Vermeulen scored 43.At Alex, Takashinga batted first and were all out for 101 with Tatenda Taibu scoring 61. Moving into 2021/22, it will be fascinating to see how new Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou reshuffles the pack as he looks to cultivate a squad capable of challenging for domestic silverware.

As a new era dawns at Celtic Park, much mystery still surrounds the remnants of the previous regime. One of those uncertain of his future at the club in recent times has been Shved, who spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Mechelen.

The Latest: Shved keen on returning to Mechelen

The Daily Record reported last month that the Belgian Pro League outfit are set to approach the Glasgow giants over prolonging Shved’s loan spell as manager Wouter Vrancken went on record stating his desire to re-sign the Ukrainian, stating: “We have two loan players – Marian Shved and Ferdy Druijf – who have told us that they want to stay here next season too. So we have to see what Celtic and AZ say about it and try to come to an agreement with them.

On Monday, HLN reported that Vrancken hopes to have the aforementioned duo back at Mechelen next term. The manager commented: “They are eager to come back to play for us, but we are waiting for an agreement at club level. If they come in, then we are in very good shape for this season.”

The Verdict: Shved should extend his loan stint at Mechelen

Intriguingly, Celtic could use a player of the 23-year-old’s profile heading into a fresh campaign at Parkhead.

Excelling in Belgium circa 2020/21, Shved has managed to make 24 appearances for the AFAS Stadium inhabitants registering eight goal contributions; five goals and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Demonstrating his fearlessness in front of target, he had an average of 1.8 shots per 90 minutes across the calendar year [WhoScored]

Despite these promising signs, the former Sevilla winger needs to be partaking in regular football in what is a crucial stage of his career whether in Scotland or further afield. During his time with the Celts, Shved has only made featured three times scoring once [Transfermarkt].

If they can attract the ideal architype of positional replacement for Shved, Celtic should sanction another season-long loan deal to KV Mechelen to continue his footballing development.
