West Ham hit gold with Jarrod Bowen

Reports by The Athletic earlier in the week claimed Jarrod Bowen has received a significant pay rise as a reward for his encouraging first year at West Ham United, who appear to have struck a dream deal in their 2020 acquisition of the former Hull City forward.

Bowen is understood to have been gifted a lucrative increase to his £96,000-per-week, five-year contract that already placed the 24-year-old among the top-three earners of those currently at the London Stadium.

The pay rise was triggered by Bowen reaching 30 appearances in claret and blue, which he met on New Year’s Day when earning his 16th start of the Premier League season as David Moyes’ men claimed a 1-0 win at top-four chasing Everton.

His more lucrative terms are not said to have extended the length of time that Bowen is tied down at the London Stadium, but will serve to show West Ham’s commitment to a player who is fast becoming a key figure of the young and hungry side Moyes is aiming to build.

Bowen’s performances alone would soon have seen the £25m-rated maestro deserve improved terms, anyway, in the eyes of former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

“I like the way he runs at people. He can dribble with the ball, he can cut inside off that right-hand side. For me, he’s a quality player,” he told Football Insider. “The pay rise he’s got he deserves because he’s been outstanding this season.

“I’m sure now he just wants to get a few more goals and assists now to back up these great performances because he’s definitely going to be a star.”

Bowen is currently West Ham’s most productive player in the Premier League this season after scoring four goals and providing two assists in his 17 outings thus far.

Only Tomas Soucek (5) has scored more often, while Aaron Cresswell leads the charts in east London for goals created (4) in top-flight fixtures ahead of the Hammers’ meeting with relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday.

West Ham’s decision to spend £22m to take Bowen out of the Championship a year ago has certainly proven to be a dream deal thanks to the winger’s Premier League efforts, which have seen the 24-year-old bring more than his goals and assists to the London Stadium.

Bowen was already a proven goal threat in the second-tier 52 goals over two-and-a-half seasons, but the way he has taken to driving at opposition players, like Agbonlahor lauds, is what has helped ensure his move paid off.

The Leominster-born attacker ranks joint-15th among all Premier League players this season for accurate crosses, with 17 of his deliveries finding an Irons player in the box. Bowen’s tally is just six less than that achieved by Manchester City’s £108m-rated Kevin de Bruyne and four fewer than Tottenham Hotspur’s £81m-rated Heung-Min Son, per SofaScore.

Bowen has also won 52 ground duels and counting this term, enough to rank fourth at West Ham in a close-fought contest to be the Hammers’ best player with Declan Rice (56), Vladimir Coufal (55) and Soucek (53).

Only Soucek (28) and now-AFC Ajax striker Sebastien Haller (23) have attempted more shots than Bowen (19) to date, while trailing only Cresswell (26) and Coufal (19) for key passes (15) having fashioned the most clear-cut chances to score (4) so far this season.

Take away Bowen’s position on the right-flank, then, and Moyes’ side instantly loses much of its threat in the final-third and direct attacking output, which West Ham were able to acquire for what could easily be regarded as a bargain sum 12-months on.

Celtic’s predicted XI vs Livingston

After being held to a 0-0 draw against Livingston last weekend, Celtic have an immediate chance to claim a win against David Martindale’s side when they face them again on Wednesday night.

Their Scottish Premiership title defence may be all but over, but Neil Lennon will be hoping to get back to winning ways to try and ease some of the pressure on his own managerial future at Celtic Park.

The Hoops boss will be boosted by the return of some key first-team stars who have had to miss the past couple of weeks due to quarantining, and a clutch of them could all return for tonight’s game.

And with that in mind, below is a look at how Celtic might line up for the visit of Livingston.

In goal, Lennon may wish to stick with Conor Hazard in goal even despite the potential availability of Vasilis Barkas, with the 22-year-old earning his sixth league start in just eight games.

The back-line could see considerable changes, with Jeremie Frimpong returning to a more natural role at right-back, and Diego Laxalt joining him on the opposite side.

In the middle of defence, both Kristoffer Ajer and Stephen Welsh will certainly be pushing for both a recall and opportunity respectively, and end Lennon’s reliance on the more experienced campaigners like Nir Bitton and Shane Duffy.

Ajer – described as being a “top class central defender ” – has has to miss the past couple of games in the league due to having to quarantine.

If the Celtic boss opts for a diamond set-up in midfield, then Ismaila Soro should took his place as the anchor man, with Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor operating slightly further forward.

David Turnbull should take his place in that all-important number ten role, behind the returning Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard.

Predicted XI: Hazard; Frimpong, Ajer, Welsh, Laxalt; Soro, McGregor, Christie, Turnbull; Griffiths, Edouard.

Meanwhile, Celtic must play this exciting prospect against Livingston…

Rangers struck by Bright Osayi-Samuel blow

Every club has them. The ones that got away, the nearly and not-so-nearly deals.

Glasgow Rangers themselves are no exception to the rule, having signed some great players, but missed out on some even greater ones.

Rangers were by no means quiet in the extended summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe on four-year deals for undisclosed fees, although they missed out on signing former Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney.

However, if they had stuck to their guns, they could have had one of the Sky Bet Championship’s hottest young talents on their books.

Indeed, it seems Ross Wilson and co. have missed the chance to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel, with Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey saying Fenerbahce have pipped Rangers to the signing of the Queens Park Rangers winger.

The 23-year-old is set to swap the Championship for the sunny heights of the Super Lig after opting to leave the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

QPR director of football Les Ferdinand has given the green light for Osayi-Samuel to complete the move for a fee believed to be in the region of £700,000 in a big blow for Steven Gerrard.

The Nigerian has genuinely been one of the best players in the Championship, given his decent record for the R’s – 13 goals and 13 assists in 115 appearances, albeit a substantial amount of those from the bench.

Rangers and several clubs south of the border were interested in the £3m-rated ace, but Fenerbahce have beaten them to the post for a player who was dubbed “dangerous” by Mark Warburton.

Not that he’d like to admit it, but their failure to sign Osayi-Samuel will have left Gerrard with a sour taste after their inability to strike a deal with the Championship club for little more than a compensation fee.

Ryan Kent has long been considered Gerrard’s first-choice left winger, with the Light Blues boss not adverse to starting Ianis Hagi on the left wing. However, although Rangers have three other options out wide in Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones and Glenn Middleton, his squad options are thin in that area, as both Barker and Jones are considered surplus to requirements.

It seems Gerrard has made it a winter priority to give himself plenty of alternatives after links to the likes of Francis Amuzu and Scott Wright.

In Osayi-Samuel, however, not only would he have been able to provide cover for Kent, he would also have been able to provide competition as well. After all, he is currently averaging 2.8 dribbles per game so far this season, which is more than Kent himself (1.9).

His ability to play on both wings will also be an added bonus for Fenerbahce and a bitter note for Gerrard.

AND in other news, Rangers would be signing another Ryan Kent in Francis Amuzu…

Why Rangers will rue not signing Gilmour

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, former Rangers youngster and reported target Billy Gilmour is staying at Stamford Bridge rather than leaving the club on loan before tonight’s deadline.

Gilmour has long had to grapple with the pressure and hype that comes with being dubbed the “Scottish Iniesta.” However, he has passed each test with flying colours.

Despite his age, the 19-year-old midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Rangers after rejecting an offer to stay at Ibrox, has already made eight top-flight appearances in the Premier League and played two games in the Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Yet if you cast your mind back to the start of the January transfer window, you will remember he was considering leaving on loan in a bid to get more game time amid interest from Steven Gerrard’s Gers.

The Ibrox boss is a longstanding admirer of the club’s former starlet, who earns around £43,000-per-week at Stamford Bridge, although he publicly insisted that no talks had taken place at the time over a possible move.

Gerrard said: “I think he’s pretty settled at Chelsea. Fabulous little player but there’s been no contact”.

However, The Sun had previously reported that Rangers had indeed made an approach for the teenager midfield dynamo in December last year.

And The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed it is unlikely he will leave on loan before the transfer window closes tonight despite struggling for game time under Thomas Tuchel with Southampton believed to be among the interested parties. Ornstein has subsequently confirmed that he will stay at Chelsea until the end of the season.

There’s no doubting the fact that this could turn out to be one of Ross Wilson’s biggest regrets in the winter transfer market. Gers boss Gerrard wanted to sign a midfielder during the extended summer transfer window and ultimately got what he wanted in the form of Bafana-Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu on an initial loan deal with the option to buy.

Unfortunately, the move hasn’t quite worked out as he planned, as the South Africa international has struggled to break into Gerrard’s side after a string of poor performances. He has made just one start in 14 appearances across all competitions this season thus far.

Gilmour himself is currently averaging more tackles and more interceptions per match than the South African, as per WhoScored, which suggests that his defensive contributions are greater. In two appearances in the Champions League, he has averaged one shot, one dribble and 1.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored, implying that he could’ve offered an alternative threat in attack as well.

It’s fair to say that the Scotland U21 international could’ve been a game-changer for the Gers as he has shown he can tackle, unlock the sternest of defences with the deftest of touches and bring the ball forward to set his side on the front foot. He could’ve been one of the best loan signings that money can buy in the market this season, that’s for sure.
