Liverpool: Fans delighted that Sadio Mane is back in full training ahead of Everton clash

Loads of Liverpool fans reacted in delight to the news that star man Sadio Mane is back in full training with Everton on the horizon.

The Senegal international was recently ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19, which saw him miss his side’s 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break. But talkSPORT revealed that he has now returned to Melwood and is taking part in sessions with his teammates.

Mane joined new signing Thiago Alcantara on the sidelines, who also contracted the virus, with the Spaniard’s only appearance so far being a 45-minute cameo against Chelsea.

Over the years, the 28-year-old has been one of the Reds’ most crucial players following his £34m move from Southampton in 2016, finding the net 84 times in 174 appearances (as per TransferMarkt) and entering the club’s top 20 all-time goalscorers.

Anfield legend Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back on what he thought about Mane, declaring his love for Jurgen Klopp’s number ten during the title celebrations in July.

Understandably, supporters erupted with joy once discovering the news that Mane is back, with one of their key assets back now ready for their rivals across Stanley Park, who are currently top of the Premier League.

Can Chris Hughton Reignite the Forest Fire?

After Leeds United’s ascension into the promised land of the Premier League, there remains two clubs in the EFL to have won major European trophies – 1981 UEFA Cup winners, Ipswich Town, and Nottingham Forest. For the latter, it’s now over 40 years since a John Robertson goal delivered the second of two European Cups in succession. A nice memory, but also one that reminds Forest fans that glory days are firmly in the past.

Fans need no reminding that Forest have just started their 22nd season in succession outside England’s top flight. Their average position in the Championship over the last ten seasons has been a thoroughly unremarkable 13th. 2010/11 was the last time they made the Playoffs.

But fans would be delighted to see Forest even in mid-table at the moment. Four defeats in four games saw them in the relegation zone before the international break, only ahead of Wycombe on goal difference and Sheffield Wednesday who started on minus 12 points. A defeat to high-flying Bristol City was the final straw for the owners, who promptly sacked manager Sabri Lamouchi and replaced him with Chris Hughton. While Hughton is seen as a safe pair of hands and got his Forest tenure off to a fine start with a win over Blackburn, he has quite the task ahead of him if he is to get a tune out of Forest.

Hughton must stabilise a squad in constant flux

The first problem Hughton faces is to get to grips with a squad that contains plenty of talent on paper, but little cohesion. To give you an indication of the kind of upheaval we have seen at Forest in recent seasons, consider that former boss Aitor Karanka, who had a year in charge up until January 2019, signed 24 players across two transfer windows. Lamouchi also signed over a dozen players in 2020. Forest haven’t been spending a fortune, as many players left too, but it’s the constant state of flux that has been hurting the team.

The second issue facing Hughton is to develop some kind of workable understanding with the owner, shipping magnate Stefanos Marinakis. The 53-year-old Greek also owns Olympiakos, but he has shown the kind of knee-jerk decision making that is reminiscent of Venky’s at Blackburn Rovers. Hughton is the sixth man to take his place in the dugout since Marinakis bought the club in May 2017. The onus should be on the board to give Hughton time.

You would imagine that Hughton will see the resolution of those two issues above as a means to achieve stability first and foremost. On paper, Forest look too good to be involved in a relegation battle – although you never can tell in the Championship – but they certainly do not look like they will be anywhere near the Playoff spots even should Hughton quickly get them out of this funk. He might want to resist the temptation to overhaul the squad in January, although there are several players who might seem surplus to requirements.

Soh could be a superstar

The green shoots for Hughton? Some clear quality to build a team around. 19-year-old centre back Loic Mbe Soh, who Forest signed from Paris Saint Germain, looks like a star of the future. Lewis Grabban has demonstrated he has the skillset to get goals in the Championship. And, Jack Colback has settled in nicely, transferring from Newcastle after spending a couple of seasons on loan at the City Ground. You would worry, however, about signings like Cafu (not that one) and Miguel Guerrero, both of whom came from Olympiakos. Neither player would be there had it not been for Marinakis’ influence.

In a perfect world, Hughton would get time to assess the squad and then start building from next summer onwards. He might not get that, however, such is Marinakis propensity towards meddling. It would be a shame as Hughton seems the right man for the job of getting this historic club – the oldest in the EFL after Notts County’s relegation to the National League – back to where many believe it belongs.

Jairo Riedewald steals the show as Crystal Palace battle to draw with Brighton

It finished all square at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace battled to a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the first A23 derby of the Premier League season.

Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha scored his seventh goal against Brighton, the most he has scored against any opponent before Lewis Dunk received a red card in extra time after a reckless challenge on Gary Cahill, but one player stood out from the rest: Jairo Riedewald.

Much has been made of the 3-cap Dutch international’s time at Selhurst Park, as it is fair to say that he has struggled for consistency so far, as he averaged fewer than one tackle per game in the top flight last term, via WhoScored.

It seems like he played like he had a point to prove in an attempt to try and silence the critics – and boy, did he deliver.

Per SofaScore, the 24-year-old completed a staggering 23 out of 24 passes (96%), whilst he also won four out of seven ground duels, and made two tackles, four clearances, one interception and blocked one shot. Tellingly, he only lost possession five times, unlike Michy Batshuayi.

Playing in the middle of the pitch, the versatile player even picked out the perfect pass to send the Belgian striker through, only for his teammate to be flagged offside, which was checked by VAR.

The Dutchman demonstrated that not only is he capable of putting in a defensive shift but he can also be a useful asset in attack if and when required. It’s just a shame that Batshuayi was leaning offside when the ball was played, but the least said about that, the better.

Sky Sports awarded Riedewald with a high rating of 7/10, whilst football.london went one step further and gave him a grade of 8/10, claiming he “looked at home in the Premier League on his first start of the season, his passing and movement with the ball helping him out of some tight spots.”

It’s hard to argue otherwise at the very least, as Riedewald was perhaps unfortunate to miss out on the Man of the Match award, which went to Brighton striker Neal Maupay instead.

However, Hodgson will have been buoyed by his performance, especially when you consider the fact that James McCarthy picked up a hamstring injury whilst away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

The Palace boss has had plenty of faith in Riedewald’s ability on the pitch in the past, so it’s about time he was given a chance to build upon this impressive display.

Theo Walcott’s Everton career may already be over with Southampton loan

Theo Walcott may have played his final Everton game already, having hinted at a move into coaching during his spell on loan with boyhood club Southampton.

The attacker returned to St. Mary’s on Deadline Day after the Saints struck a deal with Everton that sees the Goodison Park natives continue to pay £45,000 of the 31-year-old’s £100,000-per-week contract.

His terms are set to expire at the end of the season, though, and it is unlikely that a new deal is tabled having fallen down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti, with just 950 minutes of action handed to the former Arsenal star since the Italian’s appointment.

Walcott is yet to fully establish himself in the first-team fold at Southampton following his return to the south coast, with Ralph Hasenhuttl starting the attacker against Chelsea and seeing him assist in the 3-3 draw only to then be without the ex-England ace in victory over Everton.

But Walcott has revealed that he has been working closely with Hasenhuttl off the pitch since his homecoming, and could continue working with the Saints boss beyond his one-season loan.

“The manager has pulled me to one side a few times and put me in a room to go through a lot of tactics, which is nice to see, just to get my coaching head on, because that’s something in the future I might want to look at,” Walcott told the Saints’ website.

“It’s very interesting. I’m really enjoying my short time working with the manager at the moment and hopefully it can be a long-term thing.”

Along with working with Hasenhuttl, Walcott has been working with Southampton’s young talents and, given his comments, could look to move into a coaching position at the end of the season.

“I want to help the academy graduates coming through now,” Walcott added. “I’m sure they’ve got a lot of questions to ask – quite a few of them have already been asking me things.

“A lot of them have been saying, ‘I watched you at Arsenal and now I’m playing with you’, so that’s a nice touch. I feel like everyone’s a really hard worker.”

Should Walcott not be offered a new contract for next season and leaves Everton, his record at Goodison Park will not be as fruitful as he would have liked when signed for more than £20million by Sam Allardyce in 2018, having scored just 11 times and offered nine assists in 85 games.

He is clearly now looking at the bigger picture, though, and the forward maestro would be a superb addition for Southampton in a player-coach type role given his 47-caps for England, experience competing in the Champions League and 348 career Premier League appearances.

Walcott also has a superb footballing brain, and was hailed by Arsene Wenger during their time at the Emirates Stadium with the former Arsenal boss once noting via Sky Sports: “He has all the ingredients to be a great striker, because of the quality of his runs. He is an intelligent player, a good finisher.”

AND in other news, Marcel Brands can repeat his summer masterclass by landing an Everton-linked £76k-p/w powerhouse.
