After signing for £62.8 million last summer, showing huge promise for Atletico Madrid as an extraordinary passing midfielder and potential heir to Fernandinho, some Manchester City supporters were unimpressed with his performance in their 1-1 draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk. 

Ilkay Gundogan finally opened the scoring for City with his bundled effort before Israeli international Manor Solomon equalised following a stunning move – with Rodrigo then making way for Phil Foden after seemingly having minimal impact going forward.

Despite what you could consider to be a sub-par performance, the Spaniard has still made a fine start to life at Eastlands since his mega move – fulfilling that label of ‘the ultimate passing midfielder’ which suits Pep Guardiola’s philosophy to a tee.

So far, the 23-year-old has amassed an incredible 92% pass success rate in the league and has an even better percentage of 94.5% in Europe, as per WhoScored.com – highlighting his wizardry when it comes to distribution.

However, some sceptics argue that he isn’t energetic or robust enough to fully take the mantel from Fernandinho as City’s midfield anchor – with some shining the light on his Shakhtar performance as proof.

وحسب صحيفة “كوريري ديلو سبورت” الإيطالية، فإن آرسنال وتوتنهام يرغبان في التعاقد مع اللاعب الغامبي إبريما داربو، متوسط ميدان روما.

داربو لديه عقد في روما، حتى 30 يونيو 2023، والنادي الإيطالي، سيكون مُنفتح على بيعه حال وصل عرضًا جيدًا؛ وفقًا لما ذكرته الصحيفة.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has been talking up his teammates, praising the atmosphere amongst the dressing room when featuring on the EFL Podcast this week.

What’s he said?

The Owls showed signs that their off-field problems are no hurdle by ending a five-game run without victory by defeating Charlton Athletic 3-1 at The Valley.

Fletcher netted a brace, including one penalty, with his strike partner Atdhe Nuhiu scoring the third in the dying stages of additional time.

The 32-year-old has hailed the group as some of the best he’s been around, he said:

“I think it’s just the atmosphere around the place.

“It’s the best changing room I’ve ever been in. As a group, there’s no cliques or nothing, everyone’s just together. The foreign lads, the English lads, Scottish lads, it’s been brilliant.

“I think that’s what’s showing the character out there. We show it on the pitch and off the pitch and it’s good.”

Character and attitude

Wednesday are facing significant uncertainty off the pitch after the EFL charged the club for financial misconduct, which has since extended out to chairman Dejphon Chansiri and several of the Owls hierarchy, who could all be banned from football altogether.

The club were found guilty over the £60m sale of their Hillsborough stadium to the owner to try and offset any debts occurred in the 2017/18 accounts.

One football finance expert believes the south Yorkshiremen could be punished with a 12-point deduction at the very least, which would almost certainly curtail their season, as it would currently take them from playoff contenders to relegation favourites.

However, in the face of all this adversity, these remarks from the 32-year-old striker offer some hope as the squad appears to be tight-knit and ‘together.’

This could make a major difference if they do indeed receive the consequences this season as they will want to battle for one another to pull the club out of the mire.

وقال توخيل في تصريحات بمؤتمر صحفي اليوم الإثنين: “من الواضح أننا لا نتمتع بميزة التواجد في النهائي ومع مانشستر سيتي في نفس الدوري”.

وأكمل: “منذ اللحظة التي أقيمت فيها قرعة الدور نصف النهائي، كان من الواضح أن هذا يمكن أن يحدث، لقد ركزنا كليًا علينا، وهذا إنجاز رائع. بمجرد وصولنا نريد أن نكون في أفضل حالاتنا”.

وأضاف: “أرفض التقليل من فريقنا، مانشستر سيتي ربما يكون أفضل فريق في أوروبا في الوقت الحالي وربما العالم، علينا مرة أخرى إغلاق الفارق لمدة 90 دقيقة، الشيء الجيد هو أننا فعلنا ذلك بالفعل، لقد لعبنا مع هذا الفريق في نفس الظروف في فترة قصيرة من الزمن، هذه هي النقطة التي يجب الاستمرار فيها، والنقطة التي يجب تصديقها قبل مواجهة السبت”.

وواصل: “كل شيء ممكن في المباراة النهائية. بالطبع، كل شيء ممكن في كل اتجاه، الخسائر الأخيرة يهمني أن نتعلم منها، ليس من السهل السيطرة على هذه الخسائر لتحليلها، لأن ما قدمناه في هذه المباراة، لا يشير إلى أنه من الضروري الخسارة”.

واعترف: “لا يمكننا إنكار الأداء، لكن في بعض الأحيان يكون الانتقاد أمر مبالغًا فيه بعض الشيء، لأننا غير محظوظين، وهذا هو الأمر ببساطة، نحن لسنا محظوظين بما فيه الكفاية في هذه المباريات التي خسرناها”.

وأشار: “في النهاية نحن انتهينا في المراكز الأربعة الأولى، للأسف خسرنا نهائي الكأس، والآن لدينا مرة أخرى نهائي، إنها مباراة فريدة من نوعها، ونحن نُدرك أننا نستحق الوصول إلى هناك، لقد عملنا بجد، مررنا بلحظات حاسمة”.

وعن المواجهة الثالثة ضد مانشستر سيتي، قال توخيل: “لا أعرف ما إذا كانت هزيمتهم في آخر مباراتين ميزة بالنسبة لنا، لكننا نُدرك أنها أغلقت الفجوة أمامهم، لم تصبح مواجهتهم عقدة، وهو ما يجعلني أقول إنه يمكن أن يحدث أي شيء في جميع الاتجاهات”.

وشدد: “الحظ له جزء كبير في هذه المباريات، التفاصيل الصغيرة مثل من يمكنه التخلص من الضغط، ولديك أول لحظة إيجابية في المباراة، جميعها أشياء مهمة في مواجهة السبت، ولكن علينا أن نتكيف سريعًا مع ما سيحدث”.

واختتم: “سنذهب للراحة غدًا من أجل الخروج من الضغوطات التي واجهناها هذا الموسم، ثم بدايةً من يوم الأربعاء سنكون مليئين بالبهجة، لأننا سنخوض أهم مباراة في الموسم وأكثرها إثارة”.

وجه حسين الشحات لاعب الأهلي الشكر للجماهير على مساندته، مشيرًا إلى أنه اختار الانضمام للمارد الأحمر لأنه يكتب أسماء اللاعبين في التاريخ.

ونجح الأهلي في التتويج بلقب السوبر الإفريقي للمرة السابعة في تاريخة، وذلك على حساب نهضة بركان بهدفين سجلهما محمد شريف وصلاح محسن.

وقال الشحات في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر فضائية “الأهلي”: “أشكر الجماهير على مساندتهم، هم أفضل شيء في المباريات، لحظة كبيرة أن تناديني الجماهير لتحييني، وتعاهدنا ألا نجعلهم يذهبون من الملعب في حالة حزن وأن نهديهم البطولة”.

وأردف: “اخترت الأهلي لأنه يحب البطولات وأسماء اللاعبين تكتب في التاريخ، ونحن هدفنا حصد الخماسية التاريخية والفوز بالسوبر المصري”.

Lucas Moura turned in another poor performance as Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Fresh from a display against Burnley that laid bare his deficiencies, Lucas again struggled to stamp his authority on a game as Spurs were well beaten in Germany.

Jose Mourinho rotated his starting XI, safe in the knowledge that his side had already secured safe passage to the knockout rounds via a second-placed finish.

That led to Lucas starting up front on his own and he was a disappointment in the role.

Per WhoScored, he had just 21 touches of the ball, fewer than any other player to start the game, including Bayern’s Kingsley Coman, who was injured in the 27th minute.

In total, Lucas had one shot on goal, which was blocked, and he also completed just four passes throughout the 65 minutes he was on the pitch prior to his substitution; Son Heung-min came on as his replacement.

He completed just one dribble, made one tackle and was also dribbled past once. Lucas also failed to register a single key pass, while he won just 14% of his aerial duels.

An outright failure

Lucas’ performance is made all the worse by the fact that Troy Parrott was sat, twiddling his thumbs, on the bench.

The Republic of Ireland international made his Premier League debut at the weekend, coming on as a substitute against Burnley.

He has been a prolific presence in the youth teams and is actually the joint-top scorer in the UEFA Youth League, scoring six goals.

Surely he would have offered a greater threat than Lucas, who was ultimately anonymous.

To spend 65 minutes on the pitch and complete four passes works out at an average of 0.061 passes per minute.

That, quite simply, is absolutely awful, much like his overall performance.
