Potential Consequences of Arsenal appointing Marc Overmars as technical director

[ad_pod ]

The departure of Sven Mislintat in February arrived as both a shock and a disappointment to Arsenal supporters. The man nicknamed ‘golden eye’ for his ability to spot the next generation of young talent was an immensely popular yet elusive figure in north London, and he had been regarded as a pivotal cog in the club’s long-term future.

Monchi was touted as a replacement for Mislintat, but his decision to return to Sevilla has forced the Gunners to go back to the proverbial drawing board.

However, according to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Arsenal have set their sights on a potential move for Ajax’s current technical director and former Gunner, Marc Overmars.

The report claims that Arsenal’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, has begun interviewing targets as he searches for a new technical director and Overmars will be considered despite the fact he is likely to come at a high price.

A gap in Arsenal’s recruitment team is waiting to be filled and Overmars would be a genius appointment given his experience and connection with Ajax, but how exactly would it impact the club in the coming years?

Football FanCast look at the potential consequences of Arsenal agreeing a deal with Overmars…

Crucial alliance formed

With five years of service devoted to Ajax during his playing days and a further six-and-a-half years worth of service as Director of Football in Amsterdam, Overmars naturally has a strong relationship with the Dutch giants.

Losing him to north London would be a huge blow for the Champions League quarter-finalists, but it’s likely that he would leave with their blessing after years of good service.

That in turn would provide Arsenal with a crucial new alliance. Ajax are globally renowned for their ability to consistently produce golden generation after golden generation of talent, so the benefits of establishing a positive relationship with the club cannot be expressed highly enough.

Overmars’ arrival would not single-handedly guarantee a supply line of Ajax’s finest talent, but it would give Arsenal an advantage over their European rivals in the transfer market.

Arsenal teenagers struggle to break through

An increase in signings from Ajax, though, could ultimately create some problems for players residing within Arsenal’s youth ranks.

Unai Emery has demonstrated a willingness to trust in youth players this season, with the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock all handed opportunities in the first-team, but that trend could be scuppered by Overmars’ appointment.

The chance to graduate from the youth ranks into the senior squad would not become a concept of the past but a steady influx of youngsters from Holland could make opportunities much harder to come by.

Return to Champions League

Ajax’s success in the Champions League this season has been symptomatic of a wider theme of development at the club in recent years, which Overmars has firmly been a part of.

After finishing outside the top-four for two seasons and with the prospect of a third season without Champions League football a likely possibility, it’s clear that the man who replaces Mislintat will have a mammoth task to undertake.

But, despite the size of the task at hand, the 45-year-old’s credentials and understanding of Arsenal’s values and expectations make him well placed to help Emery’s men return to Europe’s elite.

Everton: Goodison Park is becoming a fortress again

Marco Silva’s change in tactics have certainly been very encouraging to watch from an Everton perspective and the intensity his team has been playing with in recent matches has turned their season around in quite spectacular fashion.

Despite losing at Newcastle United a few weeks ago, the Toffees have adjusted their approach in matches that have given them very impressive victories of late, which included home wins over Chelsea and Arsenal, while also keeping rivals Liverpool to a surprising goalless draw at the beginning of March.

Everton look like they are playing without any fear at the moment and have been relentless on the pitch, forcing opposition teams into errors by pressing quite high up the field.

A high-flying Arsenal team simply had no answers for this type of game-plan on Sunday afternoon and their midfield was forced into making poor decisions by the Toffees, who stayed composed while forcing this high pressing game.

After struggling to find any sort of momentum or consistency for the majority of the season, Everton finally look like a team who can beat any opposition on the day, especially at Goodison Park.

Their ability to keep clean-sheets against three of the top six clubs at home has been very impressive and the never-say-die attitude seems to take them to new heights on the pitch.

Even older players like Seamus Coleman and Phil Jagielka are making statements at the moment due to the freedom they have been given to play with such a degree of aggressiveness and resilience.

And, for arguably the first time this campaign, it seems as if every player on the pitch knows exactly what is expected of him.

Silva’s current approach could see Everton cause even more teams some problems before the season concludes.

The Toffees welcome Manchester United to Goodison Park next weekend and will hope to continue this trend and not be daunted by any challenge the Red Devils might have to offer, while the energy of the players could make it a difficult afternoon for the visitors.

Liverpool should place faith in Harry Wilson to free up funds for Neves swoop

[ad_pod ]

Jurgen Klopp will be hard pressed to dramatically improve a Liverpool squad which has gone toe-to-toe with Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League table this season.

However, it is the inability of their title rivals to emulate their supremacy from last season which underlines the importance of strengthening every summer.

Pep Guardiola made just one signing as Riyad Mahrez arrived at the Etihad Stadium in a £60 million deal, ignoring major problem areas such as defensive midfield and left-back, potentially to the detriment of their dream of winning the Champions League for the very first time.

What’s the word?

A recent report from Het Nieuwslblad has claimed that Liverpool will not fall into a similar trap as they have already set their sights on Thorgan Hazard, although they face stiff competition from Borussia Dortmund, who the player would prefer to move to.

But what is pertinent to the report is that Liverpool are apparently willing to part with a fee which exceeds the 42 million euros (£36.2 million) Dortmund have already bid.

Meanwhile, according to O Jogo (via Daily Mail), Liverpool coach Pepjin Lijnders has revealed that the Reds are interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers lynchpin Ruben Neves.

“I know him very well, his ambition, his passion for the game, his professionalism. I know what he gives to the team and this type of player always interests us. I recognised him when I saw him at Wolves. I saw technique, professionalism; I saw the 2013-14 player I knew.”

While interest in Neves is certainly well placed his reported £100 million price-tag, per The Times, seems a real stretch if Liverpool’s hierarchy are willing to splash out on Hazard, as well as other recruits during the summer.

Wilson the solution

There is, however, a solution: trust in Harry Wilson instead.

Like Hazard, the 22-year-old has enjoyed huge success this season on both the left and right wing, making defenders look foolish with his tantalising dribbling ability and finding the back of the net on a consistent basis.

The Wales international may not possess the same level of experience as Hazard but the fact he has excelled in two separate loan spells in the Championship suggests everything is in place for him to make the step up to top-flight football.

A transition period is likely to be defined by frustration and inconsistency, but that is a given for any promising flair player looking to showcase their talent at the elite level. And if Klopp is willing to pursue with Wilson it would help facilitate a stunning club-record deal for Neves.

Neves swoop

The former Porto star has the potential to blossom into one of the world’s most coveted holding midfielders, making Jordan Henderson look like a Sunday league player with his inventive passing and intelligence both with and without the ball.

At this moment in time Liverpool have plenty of quality central midfield players but Neves would be a progressive one-off transfer splurge to lay a foundation for the next decade, ensuring that Georginio Wijnaldum and Henderson are replaced with a superior orchestrator.

With a player of Wilson’s talent making a strong claim for a place in the senior squad next season and Neves likely to join a European rival if Michael Edwards fails to act in time, Liverpool ought to trust in their academy product to free up enough funds to seal a club-record £100 million swoop.

Opinion: Christian Benteke’s expected exit epitomises Crystal Palace’s poor recruitment

When Crystal Palace signed Christian Benteke from Liverpool back in the summer of 2016, it looked like a great signing.

And after his debut season at Selhurst Park, it was hard to argue against that. For the Eagles during the 2016/17 Premier League campaign, the 28-year-old managed to find the back of net on 15 occasions as he side went on to beat the drop.

Fast forward to 2019, though, and Benteke now looks anything but with reports (Het Laatste Nieuws via Sport Witness) now circulating that the Eagles are looking to get rid of him.

Yet to register a league goal all season, the above is not a surprise. The Belgian, however, is not the only No.9 to have struggled at Selhurst Park this campaign.

The likes of Alexander Sorloth and Jordan Ayew, for example, have been brought in recently and have failed to do much in front of goal.

While prior to the serious knee injury he picked up, Connor Wickham had also not been the most prolific of strikers, though he remains a strong No.9 capable of holding up the ball well.

Ultimately, on paper, Crystal Palace’s recruitment when it comes to centre-forwards has mostly been poor with Benteke arguably epitomising that and Michy Batshuayi being the exception.

The failures of multiple strikers could yet suggest that perhaps the problem is a tactics thing rather than all of the above names being poor frontmen.

In a team like Crystal Palace, managed by a coach like Hodgson, attackers are not always afforded an abundance of chances.

Whatever the case, the signing of Benteke has not quite worked out and an exit now looks imminent for another Crystal Palace No.9 who has not been able to deliver.

The Chalkboard: Arnautovic reborn as West Ham record glorious derby win

[ad_pod ]

Marko Arnautovic is back.

The West Ham United attacker turned in a match-changing performance on Saturday as the Hammers became the first team to win at Tottenham Hotspurs’ new stadium.

On the chalkboard

Arnautovic has endured a difficult spell after a misguided flirtation with a move to China in January.

Indeed, he has not scored for the Hammers since January 2nd, when he netted a brace in a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Since then, in the 10 games prior to the clash with Spurs, Arnautovic had laid on just one assist, in a 3-1 beating of Fulham.

But on Saturday he was reborn, enjoying an excellent second-half and laying on a truly fantastic assist for Michail Antonio’s goal.

Collecting the ball on the right flank, he lofted it into his team-mate’s path, and Antonio took one touch before firing past Hugo Lloris to give Pellegrini’s men all three points.

Per WhoScored, the Austrian international had 62 touches of the ball, two shots on target and one dribble, while he also won one aerial duel and one tackle. He also laid on two key passes.

His performance was all the more impressive given that he endured a difficult first 45 minutes, having very little impact on the game, but his emergence in the second half sent Spurs heads spinning.

Playing for a move

Arnautovic needed a performance such as this to get his move.

Football FanCast reported in January that his new contract contained a clause allowing him to leave for a fee of £45million this summer.

His displays prior to the game against Spurs gave no indication of any club paying that but this was a stark reminder of the qualities he offers.

He is quick, strong, good in the air and also deft of touch; the Austrian picked a long ball from Lukasz Fabianski out of the air in a moment of genuinely world-class ability midway through the game.

West Ham, then, are left with something of a dilemma. They will struggle to replace him if he does leave but, at the same time, this may be the only chance they get to receive such a fee for a 30-year-old.

Ultimately, they won’t have a choice, but after Saturday’s display, it is clear that he will be sorely missed.
