Everton: A future with Yerry Mina is as exciting as it gets

At last! At long, long last. Indeed, Everton kept a rare clean-sheet on Sunday as the Toffees claimed an important 2-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Marco Silva’s men have struggled to get momentum going this season and have particularly been vulnerable in defence.

But, on Sunday, the Toffees managed to keep the Blues out, which should be a massive confidence booster for the whole team.

The decision by the manager to start Yerry Mina at centre-back, though, appeared to bring a sense of calmness and composure to the Everton team, who was captained by Seamus Coleman. Despite, being under heaps of pressure early on in the game, Everton managed to absorb everything Maurizio Sarri’s men threw at them before capitalising in the second-half.

Everton were a completely new outfit after the interval, mainly because they realised they could punish Chelsea due to Mina’s solid defending at the back.

The Colombian international looked good next to Michael Keane after Kurt Zouma was left out of the matchday squad.

Mina’s experience clearly helped Keane on the day and the pair formed a solid partnership at the back that offered the London club no clear chances at goal in the second-half. The Keane and Zouma pairing has been under a lot scrutiny lately, especially after the three a 2-0 lead they threw away at Newcastle United last weekend, which saw the Magpies win the encounter 3-2 in the end.

Still, if Everton were to build on this impressive result and make a strong finish to their season then Silva should consider sticking with Keane and Mina as his centre-backs.

Mina also appears to be the type of player who gets better and better the more minutes he gets to be on the pitch, which should tempt Silva to fully place his trust in him. Everton travel to the London Stadium after the international break and could have a chance of picking up a rare away victory over West Ham should they be defensively solid like on Sunday.

Months after signing, Mina is looking worth it.

Leeds must sign Bowen in summer

Leeds United fans will feel gutted with today’s result as they enjoyed the better of the chances. And, the disappointing defeat has now pushed them out of the automatic promotion places.

The Whites had the perfect opportunity to take another step towards securing promotion to the Premier League earlier on today but they passed it up, so they’ll now have to play the chasing game.

One thing that is certain is the fact that Marcelo Bielsa will already have his eye on the summer transfer window, with reinforcements needed regardless of whether promotion is achieved.

Leeds were reportedly (as per Daily Mail) plotting a move for Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen back in December of last year but nothing developed as the Englishman ended up staying at the KCOM Stadium.

Indeed, many Leeds fans will remember his dominant performance two days after being linked as he netted both of Hull’s goals to silence Elland Road. The 22-year-old has gone up another couple of levels since the turn of the year as he’s taken his goals tally to 20 in all competitions, as well as producing three assists.

Jack Clarke will inevitably attract interest in the summer transfer window and Jack Harrison is set to return to Manchester City once his loan spell expires, so they’ll need to bring in an attacker. And, with Pablo Hernandez turning 34 next months, it’s safe to say that Leeds will need to look for a long-term replacement.

Bowen would be the perfect replacement for the Spaniard as he’s shown that he can create in the final third this season having provided three assists and he’s constantly involved in the build-up to goals. Also, he’s been prolific in front of goal and still has his best years ahead of him at the age of 22, so the future is bright.

Although, Bielsa will need to work his magic to bring Bowen to Elland Road as Everton and Norwich are reportedly interested, along with Spurs, so promotion may be required.

Leeds United, do you think you can lure Bowen to Elland Road? Surely it depends on promotion…

Marco Van Ginkel can be the missing piece to Rangers’ title push

Rangers need a creative midfielder and even Steven Gerrard’s admitted it. It must be the Gers’ top priority in the summer, and they should look no further than Marco van Ginkel.

The 26-year-old made 28 appearances on loan at PSV last season, scoring 14 goals and assisting four. However, a cruciate ligament injury prevented him sealing a permanent move, and knee surgery in June meant he was sidelined for eight months.

He was included in Chelsea’s revised Premier League squad at the start of the year, and when he returns Gerrard should take the risk and bring him to Ibrox as they look to challenge for the title next season.

The Dutchman’s quality was clear, but it still doesn’t seem he’s got a future at Chelsea, and the Gers can take advantage of this to attract a quality of player that may not usually be attainable the club. His creativity and vision is something Gerrard knows his team have lacked this season.

Regarding the addition of a playmaker in January, he told a press conference: “A number  10 was an area we tried but maybe targets you’re after aren’t available or with the funds available you can’t make that happen” (quotes sourced from the Scottish Sun)

He was clearly disappointed with the club’s inability to bring in a player like Van Ginkel, so with him having dropped off many teams’ radars due to injury, it could be the perfect match.

Chelsea bought him for just £8.46m in 2013, so it doesn’t seem like they’ll drive a hard bargain if the Gers did come in for him, so the move makes financial sense too. He could well be the missing piece to Rangers’ title challenge.

Pundit View: Paul Merson tips Wolves to struggle against Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Giving his prediction for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, Paul Merson thinks that Wolves could struggle to a 1-1 draw against Burnley. The former attacking midfielder was offering his opinions to Sky Sports.

What’s he said?

Merson is no stranger to a slightly odd opinion but his view of how Burnley vs Wolves will play out is pretty realistic. He spoke about how the visitors could find life difficult despite the way their season has gone so far.

He noted how in particular their style of football might lead to them struggling to break their opponents down. Here’s what he said, courtesy of Sky Sports.

“Wolves have been one of the stories of the season, but they will find it tough to play at Turf Moor. They will be pinned back, unable to play their passing game and will find it tough.”

Merson calls it right

Burnley may be in relegation trouble but Turf Moor is still a difficult place to go, with their form at home last season giving plenty of evidence in that regard.

The Midlands side have had an exceptional season and are the polar opposite of Burnley. Last term it was the Clarets who were in Wolves’ position but how quickly things can change.

Wolves have been terrific against some of the Premier League’s top sides but have sometimes had a tendency to struggle against dogged teams such as Burnley on the road – hence why they may find life difficult again this weekend.

They haven’t won any of their last three matches away from Molineux, drawing with Chelsea but labouring to a stalemate with Bournemouth and losing to Huddersfield.

We’ve found Raul Jimenez’s No. 1 fan and… it’s a little scary. Check out the video below to see for yourself…

The way Burnley set themselves up means that Nuno Santo’s side could struggle to play through the lines and as such, be limited in terms of their creativity.

It’s not unrealistic to suggest that the game could be a draw and with the hosts fighting for survival, they’ll have plenty of motivation.

West Ham: Pellegrini project needs an attacking midfielder of genuine note

West Ham United’s poor performance against Everton over the weekend once again highlighted their dire need for a new and explosive attacking midfielder to help the team move forward.

The Hammers were ripped apart on Saturday and struggled to get any worthy attack of their own going, which saw them only manage three shots at goal, one of them on target, while the Toffees fired a staggering 17 shots at the West Ham goal, with nine of them heading towards Lukas Fabianski.

Not good. Not good at all.

The fact that Everton also had the majority of the possession should signal major warning signs to manager Manuel Pellegrini and the club’s director of football, Mario Husillos.

Despite all he’s done for the club and the great leader he’s been, Mark Noble, unfortunately, has been struggling to adapt to the type of game-plan Pellegrini has been trying to implement at the club this season, while the return of Manuel Lanzini will also take a while before he is back to his very best.

Other than that, Pedro Obiang has also been firing hot and cold for the most of the season and hasn’t really done anything worth taking note of in recent matches.

The only midfielder, who has made some sort difference in attack has been Samir Nasri, but he has been in and out of the squad to often since joining the Hammers at the beginning of the year and hasn’t had to opportunity to play regularly in this West Ham team.

David Gold and David Sullivan should, therefore, pin their focus on an exciting and energetic playmaker in the summer, who is excellent at going forward but who is also clever in his buildup play and is capable of making clever and accurate passes.

Newcastle United are currently showing what a different team in attack they are since they signed Miguel Almiron (who was linked with a move to the London Stadium in January), although he has played as a winger for most of the matches. Felipe Anderson, Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio all thrive in wider areas, highlighting the need for that central figure.

But, nonetheless, a similar type of player might be just the addition West Ham need to excel under Pellegrini next season and to put a consistent campaign together on the pitch.

Indeed, the next part of the Manuel Pellegrini project requires an attacking fulcrum of real note.
