Potential move for Jairo Riedewald could go someway to pleasing Rafa Benitez

Although the transfer window is set to close in Thursday, Newcastle’s transfer business is still very much still underway.

Newcastle haven’t exactly splashed the cash this summer, spending £22.13 million on the squad so far.

Having finished 10th in the league, Mike Ashley has failed to heavily reinvest in a squad that Rafa Benitez worked wonders with.

The club has lost Mikel Merino, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Chancel Mbemba while bringing in six players.

However, with Floriane Lejeune’s injury, the club are in desperate need of a centre-back to provide some depth behind Jamaal Lascelles and new signing, Fabian Schar.

Due to that lack of depth in defence, The Times via HITC is reporting that Newcastle are now interested in signing Jairo Riedewald from Crystal Palace.

The Breakdown

The former Ajax man has fallen out of favour at Palace having been signed by former boss Frank de Boer.

A versatile player, Riedewald can play across the back four and also as a holding midfielder.

While Newcastle have brought in Ki, having Riedewald as cover in midfield would be a great option. Moreover, at left-back Benitez only has Paul Dummett as his legitimate starter, again Riedewald could prove to be a vital player to have in reserve.

At 21, the Palace defender still has tonnes of potential and could really thrive from being under the tutelage of Rafa Benitez.

With the Palace looking to sell, Newcastle should bid for a player who could turn out to be an absolute steal.

Diamond formation provides the happy medium Emery needs at Arsenal

As Arsenal begin a Premier League campaign with a new man at the helm for the first time in over two decades, much will be made of how the Gunners set themselves up tactically in the opening fixtures.

New boss Unai Emery is renowned for his perfectionist, analytical and highly-detailed approach to match preparation. The use of video footage and statistical data to examine performances forms a key part of his coaching technique.

On the pitch, his sides tend to employ a hard-pressing style, and focus on moving the ball quickly and vertically from back to front. On the training ground he takes a forensic approach to drilling his squad to cope with, and execute, various scenarios and strategies.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280042″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus Chelsea v Arsenal”]

All of this information may well be very welcome to the ears of Arsenal fans, many of whom feel that Arsene Wenger’s management ethos was outdated. However, for the playing squad at the Emirates Stadium, as excited as they may also be, they have plenty of adapting to do.

The beginnings of Emery’s style being imprinted on this team were in evidence as the Gunners fell to defeat at the hands of the reigning champions, Manchester City, on the opening weekend using a 4-2-3-1 formation. It was clear though that these tactical developments are still in their nascent stages, and that certain members of this Arsenal squad are more naturally suited to these alterations than others.

Emery’s success, in his first season, could well rest upon his ability to forge a happy medium between his preferred style of play and what the players at his disposal are capable of, and what their natural abilities lend them to.

Looking at the ranks under his charge, a 4-4-2 diamond formation looks a perfect fit for getting the best out of the squad’s key talents whilst also producing a team that works as a cohesive unit on the whole.

The immediately obvious advantages of this system are that it allows Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to work up front together as a strike partnership, and that Mesut Ozil is free to take up his favoured No. 10 berth behind them.

As a forward pair, Aubameyang and Lacazette have the mutually complimentary qualities necessary to work well together. The Frenchman’s impressive hold-up play and quality on the ball should give him plenty of opportunities to find and combine with the pacy Gabonese forward. Of course, both are lethal finishers, so getting them both up front together should bring goals for the Gunners.

For a playmaker such as Ozil, having two potent forwards ahead of him should bring his powers of creation to the fore. Henrikh Mkhitaryan also represents an excellent rotation option for Arsenal in this position.

[ad_pod ]

The primary drawback to this system is the lack of width the team may be able to generate in an attacking sense, and how, defensively, this narrow formation can cause problems for the full-backs.

In order to negate this threat, the central midfield contingent must be extremely mobile and full of running. Luckily, Emery has players with the required attributes at his disposal. Granit Xhaka is not one of them though, so either Mohamed Elneny or the youngster Matteo Guendouzi must take the Swiss international’s place in the team.

If there is to be any chance of Aaron Ramsey signing a new contract with Arsenal, then he must feel comfortable within the team’s system and be central to Emery’s plans. Setting up with a midfield diamond, with Ramsey occupying the right-hand central midfield role, should bring the best out of the Welshman.

From that position, Ramsey can be part of Arsenal’s pressing game, and when the team are on the offensive he can be afforded license to arrive late into the box in his trademark manner.

The 27-year-old’s past experiences of playing as a right winger, and his remarkably high stamina levels, will serve him well too as he must be willing to provide cover and support to the right-back. Guendouzi (or Elneny) will have to perform the same task on the opposite flank.

At the base of the diamond, new boy Lucas Torreira can be let loose to do what he does best. The Uruguayan should be charged by Emery with the duty of relentlessly breaking up opposition attacks and hounding them in possession. When the 22-year-old does regain the ball for his side, he has the vision and technical ability to launch swift counter-attacks.

Having Torreira shielding the back line should go a long way towards protecting the heart of Arsenal’s defence. Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are a new centre-back partnership who will take time to gel. They will be reliant upon having a hardworking and defensively diligent midfield cohort ahead of them, and in this selection and formation that is exactly what they ought to get.

Finally, the full-backs need to be prepared to work hard week-in, week-out in order for the 4-4-2 diamond to function optimally. Whilst they have a right to expect, and even demand, support from the left and right-sided central midfielders, they must still take the initiative in exploiting the wings to gain an attacking advantage.

As with the introduction of any new system, it will take time for the players to get used to this diamond set up. However, the fans, board and coaching staff all ought to have patience with this process. If they can do that, then Arsenal have the perfect group of players to employ this system to devastating effect in the Premier League this season.

Rangers must not entertain any offers for Morelos

Rangers have turned down an offer of £3.75m from Bordeaux for striker Alfredo Morelos, according to BBC Scotland.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard has been busy bringing in new recruits at Ibrox since his appointment as manager.

Eleven new faces have been signed, but now there is a danger of the Scottish outfit losing first-team players.

According to BBC Scotland, Morelos has attracted the attention of Bordeaux, but Rangers have knocked back the French club’s opening offer.

The 22-year-old moved to the Glasgow-based outfit last year from HJK Helsinki in a £1m deal.

What should Gerrard do?

Morelos has the opportunity to be a real threat for the Gers this season.

He has already shown in his first seven outings of the campaign that he can be reliable in front of goal, as well as provide service to his teammates.

Morelos, who scored 15 Premiership goals in his first season for Rangers in 2017-18, has netted three times and created two assists in all competitions so far.

The attacker is not completely faultless, though, as he does have the tendency to see red mist.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278881″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Kane’s Kryptonite & London’s Biggest Losers”]

That is something that Gerrard will have to try to manage, but a few hot-headed moments are not enough to consider selling.

Morelos could be an important part of Rangers’ season, so they must resist any more offers that come their way, and hope that Gerrard isn’t given his biggest test as manager yet with the 22-year-old potentially pushing for an exit.

Jamie Shackleton was Leeds United’s unsung hero in their draw with Swansea City

Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been pretty upbeat in the last few hours after seeing their side go top of the Championship on Tuesday night courtesy of a 2-2 draw at Swansea City.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into their clash in South Wales having won each of their opening three league matches, having tasted victory over Stoke City, Derby County, and Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United. Yet they had to battle hard to secure a point from their trip to the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night as Oli McBurnie twice gave Graham Potter’s side the lead, only for goals from in-form Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez to earn the Whites a share of the spoils.

Nonetheless, there have been many happy Leeds fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are unsurprisingly heaping praise on messrs Roofe and Hernandez for grabbing the goals in South Wales on Tuesday night.

Former Oxford United striker Roofe has started the season brilliantly with four goals from his opening four games, while Hernandez netted his second of the campaign on Tuesday night, adding to his effort in their opening weekend success over Gary Rowett’s Stoke.

And while the attacking duo deserve much credit for their efforts on Tuesday, 18-year-old Jamie Shackleton was Leeds’ unsung hero for his excellent exploits at right back for the Yorkshire giants.

Ultimately, the youngster only made his senior debut for the club in their 4-1 success over Derby a few weeks back, before earning his first start in their Carabao Cup win over Bolton Wanderers only last week.

Yet the 18-year-old was thrown into the deep end at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night by being forced to play at right back, a far cry away from his more natural position in midfield.

Yet Shackleton produced a very solid display to help Leeds come away with a point from their trip to South Wales, with the Englishman willing to get on the ball in making 66 touches over the course of the match – only four Leeds players touched it more often than him.

And while some Whites supporters may have gone into the clash slightly nervous regarding his defensive capabilities, the 18-year-old certainly did his bit in making three clearances and three blocks to help Bielsa’s side at the back, while he also underlined his attacking credentials with a great assist for Roofe’s goal.

Yes, Shackleton was guilty of a few defensive mishaps over the course of the 90 minutes, but for someone playing in an unfamiliar role at right back, he certainly proved his worth to the Yorkshire giants, and thus played a key part in a makeshift backline to help the club to the point that takes them top of the Championship.

Spurs shouldn’t let Rose go

According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose could be tempted by a switch to Marseille this summer.

What’s the story?

As per the aforementioned report, Rose could be set for a move to French club Marseille in order to better his chances of retaining a place in the England international team.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280645″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Dodgy De Gea & Arsenal’s MiniRevolution”]

The 28-year-old needs to be playing regular football at a high level if he is to force his way into national team boss Gareth Southgate’s future plans. However, having been usurped in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI by Ben Davies, a move away from White Hart Lane could now be the best way for Rose to get the consistent playing time he needs.

After a few injury ravaged seasons in recent times, a change may well be a positive move for Rose.

However, he remains a Spurs player, and the North London club would be unwise to allow the left-back to depart during this transfer window.

Depth needed

Spurs have to be firm in safeguarding their own best interests here. With the transfer window now shut to English clubs, Pochettino would have no opportunity to replace Rose in the event of his exit.

If Rose were to go, that would leave Tottenham woefully short of cover for their left full-back position.

Not only is Rose a solid rotation option, if he can rediscover his best form and maintain his fitness, he has enough quality to force his way back into the first team. He should not be so quick to give up on his Spurs career, instead, Rose ought to stay and fight for his place.

Spurs can’t really afford for him not to.

Adam Forshaw return could complete Bielsa’s dream team

Coming off the back of a frustrating 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, Leeds will face another tough test of their Championship-winning credentials at Millwall next weekend.

Joint top with Middlesbrough, Leeds have been superb so far this season under Marcelo Bielsa’s new brand of attacking, high tempo football. Aside from new boy Barry Douglas, Bielsa hasn’t made many changes to the starting XI and instead has looked to improve the players already within the team, namely Kemar Roofe, Samu Saiz and Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips has been placed at the base of midfield and has so far started all eight games for the Whites but according to Phil Hay, who spoke on the Inside Elland Road podcast via Inside Futbol, Adam Forshaw is close to returning to fitness.

The Breakdown

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist confirmed that Forshaw might not be fit enough for the match against Millwall but is very close.

Forshaw was outstanding for Leeds during the second-half of last season and was a big loss for the club ahead of this season.

At the moment, Phillips will likely keep his place for the foreseeable future due to his outstanding performances but should he make a mistake, Leeds finally have a player that can step in.

Experienced and great with the ball, Forshaw’s return is only going to push Phillips to raise his game. With both contending for a spot, Bielsa is going to have a selection headache on his hands but in truth, it’s a good one to have.

Leeds fans, would you start Forshaw ahead of Phillips?

Revealed: Majority of Southampton fans want Hughes to continue starting Wesley Hoedt

[ad_pod ]

When Southampton centre-back Wesley Hoedt arrived at St Mary’s in 2017, fans would have been hoping that they were getting another defender who had the quality to go on and become one of their best players, as the likes of Dejan Lovren, Toby Alderweireld and Virgil van Dijk had done before.

The Netherlands international certainly joined as a highly-rated player despite not being a regular for previous club Lazio, but after a tough start to the 2017/18 campaign under Mauricio Pellegrino, the 24-year-old then had to face the second-half of the season without compatriot Van Dijk as he left for Liverpool during the January transfer window.

It was quickly evident that the Dutchman certainly wasn’t the most reliable when it came to not concentration, giving possession away or failing to win the ball in the air against physical strikers, and his partnership with Jack Stephens left a lot to be desired as the south coast outfit found themselves in a relegation battle.

However, the much-maligned Hoedt did step up and was counted when it mattered in the closing weeks of the season under Mark Hughes, and to this day he has started every Premier League match under the tutelage of the Welshman.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”290052″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FPL Show Rethink your FPL strategy”]

Despite that fact, the St Mary’s faithful certainly don’t seem to be on board with the 24-year-old just yet, as shown by some of their criticism of him on Twitter already this term.

However, recent clean sheets against Burnley and Crystal Palace may be swaying the supporters we asked to vote on our poll to see whether they thought Hughes should keep the faith with him, as 66% said they want the Dutchman to stay in the starting XI – as you can see from the results below.

Everton fans want Silva to take notice of Hornby following brace

Everton are playing West Ham United this Sunday at arguably the best time due to their opponents’ miserable start to the season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have lost all four of their Premier League fixtures, making them the only club in the division yet to pick up a point.

Everton will feel like they have the advantage as the clash on home soil at Goodison Park, but they have their own problems to deal with.

Marco Silva has a long list of players who are injury doubts for the game, including Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Seamus Coleman, Theo Walcott and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who picked up an injury playing for the England Under-21s on Tuesday night.

In addition, Richarlison is suspended for the match due to the red card that he picked up playing against Bournemouth.

With the injury list in mind – particularly Calvert-Lewin’s recent knock – some Everton fans have called on Silva to take a look at 18-year-old Fraser Hornby.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291236″ player=”12034″ title=”Jose Mourinho Has Turned Into Arsene Wenger”]

The teenage attacker has shone on the international stage with the Scotland Under-21s this week as he scored a hat-trick against Andorra and a brace against the Netherlands.

Merson predicts second defeat in a row for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur will lose for the second time in as many games this weekend when they host Liverpool, according to BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side won each of their opening three Premier League matches but were defeated by Watford prior to the international break, while the Lilywhites face another tough test this weekend when they host title hopefuls Liverpool.

The Reds are one of three sides in the top-flight to boast a 100% record from their opening four matches, alongside Chelsea and Watford, and their former defender Mark Lawrenson expects their fine run of form to continue.

Predicting a 2-1 victory for the visitors, Lawrenson told BBC Sport:

“I fancy Liverpool based on the counter-attack game. This game is bigger for Tottenham than it is for Liverpool – this is a game Spurs can’t afford to lose, they’ve got to have a go especially after what happened at Watford. Liverpool will pick them off.”

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”292154″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Real football is back with our PL & EFL accumulators”]

With Liverpool’s defence improving significantly this season, conceding just once so far, and Harry Kane on a run of three matches for club and country without finding the net, Tottenham could well face an uphill battle.

However, Pochettino’s side usually perform better in matches against fellow Premier League titans and showed that during their stellar victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford – and Lawrenson is certainly someone who has been accused of Liverpool bias plenty of times.

Everton fans want Tosun dropped for Arsenal clash

[ffc_insert title=”Check out the Big Interview with Ben Dinnery & Johnny Wilson” name=”Fixture In Focus Podcast Special” image_ link=”https://fixtureinfocus.podiant.co/e/369d9b4fb86294/” link_text=”Click here to play”]

Everton fans have been discussing their misfiring forward line ahead of the trip to Arsenal, and loads of fans are calling Marco Silva to drop Cenk Tosun.

Everton have had an up and down start to the season, as the highs of seeing Richarlison explode into life have quickly been dampened by the lows of poor results against Huddersfield and West Ham.

The Toffees need to shore up at the back, but scoring goals is also a problem, and fans are now calling for Tosun to lose his spot.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”298134″ player=”12034″ title=”PSG Are An Impressive Brand Not An Impressive Club”]

The Turkish international was expected to burst into life this season with new pacy and creative players around him, but he has been sluggish and ineffectual.

He scored five times last season for a terrible Sam Allardyce side, so the fact that he can’t find the net for the more attack-minded Silva is certainly cause for concern.

The 27-year-old has 11 goals in 29 Turkey caps and bagged nearly 100 league goals in his home country, but it looks like the return of Richarlison could mean the end of his time as the main man up front for the Toffees.
