Payet 2.0: West Ham in talks for £22.5m star who's "made for the big stage"

Fair to say, West Ham United supporters are not coming into the new season with sky-high optimism.

Last time round, the Hammers finished 14th, only just above the disastrous duo that was Manchester United and Tottenham, while their tally of nine home league defeats was the most they’ve endured since being relegated in 2010/11.

Graham Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui in January, but this did not lead to an upturn in results, winning just five of his 19 matches in charge.

Thus, Potter will be under pressure to make a fast start to this season, but will need some new recruits if he’s to achieve this, potentially with his eye on an attacker reminiscent of a West Ham fans’ favourite of yesteryear.

West Ham's search for a new attacker

So far this summer, in a very unpopular move amongst the Hammers’ support, star winger Mohammed Kudus has departed to join fierce rivals Tottenham for a reported fee of £55m, becoming the first player to make such a move since Scott Parker in 2011.

Meantime, left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf has arrived from Slavia Prague for around £19m, but this has done little to get supporters back on side.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

Well, that could change because, according to a report by Jack Johnson for talkSPORT, West Ham have made contact with Leicester City over the possibility of signing Bilal El Khannouss.

They add that Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Monaco also ‘hold a concrete interest’, while adding that the Moroccan international’s contract contains a £22.5m release clause, activated following the Foxes’ relegation to the EFL Championship.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Loïc Tanzi of L’Équipe claims that El Khannouss has no intention of playing in England’s second-tier, prioritising a return to the Premier League, so could he soon swap the East Midlands for the East End of London?

How Bilal El Khannouss would improve West Ham

After arriving from Genk for £21m last summer, El Khannouss managed to impress during his debut campaign in the Premier League, despite plying his trade in a generally hopeless Leicester side, who infamously failed to score in nine successive home league matches, an unwanted new top division record.

The table below outlines the Moroccan’s importance to the Foxes last season.

As the table outlines, El Khannouss was very much Leicester’s creator in chief last season, ranked first for a variety of passing, chances created and dribbling statistics.

Ben Mattinson of Breaking the Lines notes that he ‘boasts the vision to spot impossible passes’, adding that he ‘oozes composure’ and is capable of a match-winning moment at any time, asserting that it’s only a matter of time before he is plying his trade for one of ‘Europe’s biggest outfits’. Writing on X, Mattinson has described him as “a player made for the big stage”.

Well, that last part sounds just like arguably West Ham’s greatest player of the modern era, does it not?

When Dimitri Payet joined the Hammers from Olympique de Marseille for just £11m in the summer of 2015, no one could’ve forecast what would happen next.

In 60 appearances in claret and blue, the France international scored 15 goals and registered 22 assists, with Josh Fordham of talkSPORT asserting that he is ‘easily the most talented player’ of the club’s modern history.

Meantime, Roshane Thomas of The Athletic outlines how the “world-class” Payet “entertained supporters” with countless jaw-dropping moments, before forcing through an acrimonious return to Marseille just 18 months after arriving.

So, could El Khannouss be the next Payet? Let’s compare the pair to find out.

Of course, Payet’s statistics are more impressive, but this should not come as much of a surprise, given that, as noted by Harry Sherlock of Goal, he was one of the best players in the Premier League in the 2015/16 season, so much so that he was on the Ballon d’Or nominees list.

El Khannouss is certainly yet to hit those heights, but his numbers are comparable, especially when it comes to chances created and dribbling, so he too has the potential to light up the London Stadium.

Disney-Star raise concerns over 2024 men's T20 World Cup

The ICC’s broadcast partners ask the global body if it believes it delivered an event that justified the huge investment made in securing media rights

The pitches in New York produced a highest total of 137 across eight games•ICC/Getty Images

Overshooting its own budget is not the only fallout for the ICC from its recently concluded men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. ESPNcricinfo understands that Disney-Star*, the ICC’s broadcast partners, have raised concerns about the event, asking whether the ICC believes it delivered a product that justified the investment made in the rights, and whether better value overall can be derived from the rights deal.Among the concerns raised was the schedulling of matches, in particular the timing of those games which ended up being broadcast in the early morning hours in the subcontinent, thereby affecting viewership significantly. These include most of West Indies’ games, the co-hosts and two-time champions, as well as the first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan. It is also believed that the broadcaster had communicated its worries about the drop-in pitches that were ultimately used for the Nassau County stadium for the New York leg of the tournament. The venue saw a succession of bowling-friendly surfaces on which two sides were bowled out for less than 100 and the highest completed score was 137.Related

ICC Board seeks answers after costs spiral for US leg of T20 World Cup

No rain, but still no play: Lauderhill washouts prompt questions

The first two surfaces were eventually rated as “unsatisfactory” by the ICC, only one rung above “unfit”. The venue also hosted the marquee India-Pakistan match, for which the pitch was rated “satisfactory” but where Pakistan failed to chase down a target of 120.Later in the tournament, the Trinidad surface for the semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan, where the latter was routed for 56 on a brutish pitch with excessive seam and uneven bounce, was also rated “unsatisfactory”.Through its various iterations, Disney-Star has held the the rights to every single ICC event since the 2011 men’s ODI World Cup. Last year, Disney-Star acquired the rights to broadcast ICC events in the India market in a four-year deal worth just above USD 3 billion. Dissatisfaction from such a long-term broadcast partner is likely to be taken seriously, given the implications it has for all ICC members, who receive annual revenue derived from the rights deal. Most members, other than India, Australia and England, rely heavily on these revenues.ESPNcricinfo understands that there were discussions within the ICC to swap the USA-West Indies event with either India in 2026 or England in 2028 in order to give the venues more time to get ready, but those discussions did not go far.Apart from New York, Florida came in for criticism as a venue as well, where matches could not be held even though the majority of the rain there fell in the preceding week. The ground’s drainage was not up to date, and it didn’t have enough covers to protect the whole playing area, which led to frustrating scenes where the pitch was ready but there were wet patches on the outfield despite strong sunlight. Three of the four matches in Florida were abandoned, one of them an India game.ESPNcricinfo understands that the disgruntlement is limited to this event, the handling of which is already undergoing an audit after it emerged that the original budget for the US leg ballooned over by up to USD 20 million. The event has prompted one idea to be floated to convert the 2025 ODI Champions Trophy to T20Is. There has not been any development on this since the grievance was first raised a month ago. This issue was not discussed in the ICC meetings this Tuesday.

They started their tournament with a 16-run defeat against Bangladesh, before going down heavily to West Indies by six wickets and 50 balls to spare. South Africa are also coming into this game on the back of a seven-wicket loss against England which saw them slip to third on the points table. Their ten-wicket win against West Indies, though, has kept their net run rate (NRR) relatively healthy.Related

News brief: There are no major injury concerns in either camp, though it remains to be seen how South Africa manage the players’ workload considering a less-than-48 hours turnaround time after their game against England was a day-night affair in Sharjah on Monday. Scotland are bottom placed on the group B points table, and with an NRR of -1.897, a loss against South Africa will most certainly end their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals. South Africa, on the other hand, can leapfrog England and secure top spot with a big win in Dubai. This is the first time South Africa and Scotland will face-off in any format in women’s cricket. Heat is once again going to be a factor in the day game in Dubai, with temperatures likely to touch 38 degrees Celsius.Player to watch: Nonkululeko Mlaba is currently the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with five wickets and could once again be South Africa’s trump card, especially in the day game where the ball is expected to turn more. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are currently bottom of the group A points table, and are yet to win a game. They lost their opening match against lower-ranked Pakistan by 31 runs, and then went down to Australia by six wickets on Saturday.News brief: India received good news on the fitness of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who is available to play Wednesday’s game after spraining her neck and retiring hurt in the last over of India’s chase against Pakistan. Pooja Vastrakar, though, is unlikely to take part having missed Sunday’s match due to a niggle, with S Sajana replacing her.India hold the advantage by a 19-5 margin in T20Is against Sri Lanka. But one of those five defeats was as recent as this July at the Asia Cup final. India will be keen on exacting revenge. They need a big win to bolster their NRR, something that they did not manage in their victory against Pakistan despite restricting them to 105. A defeat for Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will make their chances of moving to the next round almost nil. Dew has not had much of an effect in the games in Dubai so far, with the sticky nature of the surface and long boundaries also not making run-scoring easy.Player to watch: Smriti Mandhana does not have the greatest of records in T20Is against Sri Lanka: 379 runs in 19 innings at 22.29 with two fifties. But in a crunch game, India will bank on their experienced batter to give them a grand start, something that has not happened so far in the tournament.

Gibbs-White will love him: Nottingham Forest set to finalise "top signing"

The Morgan Gibbs-White saga has officially concluded at Nottingham Forest, for now.

Indeed, Forest fans will all be breathing a collective sigh of relief as Gibbs-White has secured his short-term future at the City Ground at the very least, having penned a new three-year deal that runs until the summer of 2028.

That doesn’t mean a suitor won’t try their luck before that date, however, but it does at least mean Gibbs-White will be donning Forest red for the forthcoming Premier League campaign, over lining up in North London for Tottenham Hotspur.

Forest can now press on with other signings off the back of this distraction being put to bed, as a new attacker is eyed up to play alongside the much-talked-about 25-year-old.

Nottingham Forest on the verge of sealing new signing

Before this Gibbs-White situation kicked into gear, the Tricky Trees had been busy on the transfer front.

To date, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have welcomed two Brazilians to their camp this summer, with Igor Jesus sticking out as a promising buy up top from Botafogo.

Botafogo'sIgorJesuscelebrates scoring their second goal

Forest have now cast their net out to Serie A with a new report from Fabrizio Romano, indicating that Evangelos Marinakas is set to seal a new “top signing” to replace Anthony Elanga.

Indeed, the Italian transfer reporter has revealed that the Tricky Trees and Bologna have now reached a “verbal agreement” to sign Dan Ndoye for a fee of €40m (£35m) plus add-ons. The player is due to travel to England to have a medical on Tuesday.

Bologna'sDanNdoyekisses the trophy as he celebrates after winning the Coppa Italia

On Ndoye’s expected arrival in England, he could go on to make Gibbs-White even more of a frightening beast to contain in the forward areas.

How Ndoye can make Gibbs-White even better

£35m is a lot of money for the Tricky Trees to splash out on one player, considering Gibbs-White was once a club record buy when he joined for an initial £25m fee.

However, he does justify such a steep price tag when looking at his consistent heroics in the Serie A, with 24-year-old now ready to take the Premier League by storm under Nuno’s wing.

The in-demand number 11 – who can line up down either flank as a versatile presence – has a bumper haul of 11 goals and eight assists next to his name from 75 Bologna outings, which included a stylish finish finding the back of the net against Napoli last season.

Whichever flank he decides to call home at the City Ground, he will be looking to link up with Gibbs-White to devastating effect.

Indeed, the “complete” forward – as he’s been donned by his agent Lodovico Spinosi is similar in approach to his new potential English teammate. He offers plenty of energy and skill, alongside chipping in with goals and assists for fun.

Away from offering Forest a lively winger in the wake of Elanga departing, Ndoye could also make Gibbs-White even more of a dangerous presence in attack, as seen in the Swiss forward creating a high eight chances in total last season in Serie A, despite only averaging a mere 16.8 accurate passes per clash.

This ability to carve out an opening in a flash from Ndoye might well mean Gibbs-White becomes more clinical, knowing the 24-year-old has that split-second eye for an assist, with the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder looking to reach the heights of his 21/22 season where he bagged ten strikes in total, away from hammering home seven goals last campaign.

Dan Ndoye for Bologna.

The lively Ndoye will also be prepared to scrap for his side – as seen by winning 5.9 duels per game in league action – meaning Gibbs-White might well be more focused on joining in with attacks, as opposed to being a fierce battler for Nuno’s men alongside the likes of Elliot Anderson.

£35m is a handsome amount of money to part ways with, but if it results in Gibbs-White becoming even better after he dramatically decided to stay put, it will have been viewed as a sensible investment to have made.

Nottingham Forest now on verge of signing £10m defender after making offer

Nottingham Forest are now on the verge of signing a £10m defender, having submitted an offer for his services, a report has revealed.

Forest's busy summer transfer window continues

With Forest preparing for a Europa League campaign next season, they have set out to deepen their squad, while Nuno Espirito Santo was also tasked with bringing in a replacement for Anthony Elanga, following the Sweden international’s departure to Newcastle United.

Dan Ndoye has since arrived at the City Ground, joining alongside Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha, and there should be plenty of space for even more arrivals, given that the Tricky Trees have generated considerable funds from sales this summer.

Following Turner’s departure, there is a real need to get a new goalkeeper through the door, and Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed that Angus Gunn is set to make a move to the City Ground.

However, Gunn is not the only player who could be linking up with Nuno’s side in the very near future, with a report from Italy (via Sport Witness) revealing Nottingham Forest are now very close to sealing a deal for Hellas Verona’s Jackson Tchatchoua.

Forest have made an offer of €12m (£10m) plus bonuses, which appears to be acceptable for the Italian club, with the transfer now edging closer to completion, and Tchatchoua is set to receive a four-year contract.

The full-back would be a versatile option for Nuno, given that he is able to play on both sides of the defence, and right-wing back.

BySean Markus Clifford Aug 4, 2025 Tchatchoua could be solid addition to Nuno's squad

Nuno already has a dependable option at right-back in the form of Ola Aina, with the London-born defender making 35 Premier League appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, however, the Verona defender may be a necessary addition.

Everton transfer target Jackson Tchatchoua in action for Hellas Verona.

With the Tricky Trees set to embark on a European campaign, Nuno needs to improve his squad depth, and the 23-year-old’s versatility could make him a solid option, while he is also a threat on the front foot.

The Cameroon international picked up two goals and three assists in the Serie A last season, scoring the opening goal in his side’s 2-0 victory against Genoa last September.

That said, it will be difficult for Tchatchoua to displace Aina in the starting XI, given that the 28-year-old received very high praise for his performances last season, with journalist Zach Lowy describing him as “one of the best” full-backs in Europe.
