Scott Boland six-for leads humiliation as Australia romp to Ashes glory

England blown away in little more than an hour on third morning for third Test rout

Valkerie Baynes28-Dec-2021Scott Boland’s six-wicket haul on his Test debut allowed Australia to wrap up the Ashes 3-0, by lunch on the third day at the MCG.Australia’s quicks continued their demolition job on England, with Boland adding to his two wickets from three balls during a devastating final hour on the second day, with four more on the third morning to seal an innings victory as the hosts retained the urn.Boland took six wickets in 21 balls in all while Mitchell Starc, who had a big hand in reducing England to 31 for 4 in a cauldron-like atmosphere on day two, added the wicket of Ben Stokes inside the first 25 minutes of the resumption, to end with 3 for 29.Pat Cummins, whose pressure was instrumental in keeping England’s beleaguered batters under Australia’s thumb, went unrewarded in England’s second innings, having helped restrict them to a first-innings total of 185 when he and Nathan Lyon claimed three wickets apiece. But the day – as short as it was – belonged to Boland, who was selected as an MCG specialist after his performances for Victoria and who became the fourth Indigenous Australian to play Test cricket. After taking 1 for 48 in England’s first innings, he was simply unplayable for a side with its confidence beaten and its batting in disarray. In a historic moment, Boland won the Mullagh Medal as Player of the Match, named after Johnny Mullagh, who toured England as part of the Australian Aboriginal team in 1868.With players from both sides cleared to resume after returning negative tests following a Covid scare the previous morning, England’s task always looked insurmountable, even with Stokes and Joe Root still in. But the emphatic way in which Australia rammed home their advantage consigned England to new lows, their 68 all-out the lowest Ashes total in Australia since 1936 and England’s lowest total in Australia since 1904.Starc rattled Stokes’ middle stump with a rapid, fuller ball that sailed through the gate as the batter moved forward in defence to remove the man still remembered for his heroics at Headingley in 2019 but who is in a much different place now after taking an extended break from the game.Scott Boland claimed six wickets in 21 balls to humiliate England•Getty Images

Boland entered the attack and struck with his fifth ball of the day, trapping Jonny Bairstow lbw for 5. Bairstow, dropped by Cameron Green at gully on the first ball of the over, reviewed the lbw decision, but it was upheld on umpire’s call on impact and hitting the stumps.Root must have wanted to disappear when a Cummins delivery struck him in the groin – the third time Root has suffered such an injury in just over a week. He shook it off more quickly than he did Starc’s effort in Adelaide, which came off the back of a serious knock in the nets which had sent him to hospital for scans earlier that day.Root hung around long enough to be England’s top-scorer – yet again – with just 28 this time, but he fell driving at Boland and edging to David Warner at slip. After scoring 1708 runs in 2021, Root ended the calendar year two runs shy of second-placed Viv Richards and 80 off Mohammad Yousuf’s record.England brought up another less-coveted record, however, when Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson departed in the space of three Boland deliveries without scoring, taking their side’s tally of ducks to 54 this year and equalling their worst performance in that department of 1998. Wood spooned a return catch to Boland to give him his five-for and then Robinson fenced at one outside off stump, stabbing a catch to Marnus Labuschagne at third slip.It was Green who bowled last man James Anderson for 2 to seal the result on a day that Australia – and Boland – will long remember. England, meanwhile, face a serious period of analysis if they are to prevent a 5-0 sweep.

West Ham wasted money on "nightmare" flop whose value has already halved

New boss Julen Lopetegui was given a war chest during his first summer in charge of the Irons, bringing in eight new permanent signings and two loan players, spending around £120.6m.

Jean-Clair Todibo and Carlos Soler both joined on loan from Ligue 1, with Todibo having a buy option in his deal.

One of the biggest signings made was German Niclas Füllkrug, joining from Dortmund for around £27m, as the Hammers continue to search for a clinical and reliable number nine.

The latest on Niclas Fullkrug's future at West Ham

West Ham opted for Fullkrug after weeks of searching for their striker target, with Jhon Duran being another name to consistently pop up over the summer.

The German has only made four appearances this season for the Hammers, suffering from an “injury nightmare” in the words of journalist Dom Smith since joining the club. Now, according to club insiders ClaretandHugh, it’s said that the striker simply “hasn’t settled in the UK” yet.

This would leave West Ham with just Michail Antonio and Danny Ings as striker options, the same situation they were in during the summer, which could force their hand in the January transfer window.

Fullkrug’s goal record last season was very strong, scoring 16 goals in 46 appearances, also providing ten assists, which makes it understandable as to why the Hammers wanted the 31-year-old.

However, for the fee paid, many questioned if it was too much for a player his age, and his valuation has already been depleted by half since!

Niclas Fullkrug's falling value at West Ham

The German who was signed for £27m is now only valued at a measly £12.5m according to Transfermarkt, more than half the value he was signed for just three months ago. This suggests the Hammers massively overpaid for the 31-year-old, and could rue their decision.

West Ham can’t afford to wait things out with Fullkrug, as Antonio and Ings have only scored one goal each this season, with the 34-year-old Antonio making 12 appearances, and the 32-year-old Ings making six appearances.

When analysing these metrics, you have to take into account the minutes played by each player, as it massively affects the per 90 stats. Ings, for example, has only played 134 minutes across six outings this season, which explains his high goals per 90, and xG per 90.

Fullkrug, despite playing fewer games than Ings (four) has 139 minutes played, which explains his 11.4 aerial duels won, a stat which is clearly skewed by these per 90 numbers, whilst Antonio has the majority share of the minutes, playing 700 so far.

Michail Antonio

With this trio, you clearly get a lot of different attributes. Antonio is a hard worker who runs the channels and carries the ball forward for his side, Fullkrug is a target man type who wins aerial battles and links play well and then Ings is more clinical in and around the box, and likes to get his shots off.

However, as the three are all in their 30s, the Hammers clearly lack a youthful option up front who can offer consistent minutes and goal threat, which could force their hand to offload one of these ageing forwards and replace them with a younger striker to take the number nine mantle.

Covid-19 positive hits England party ahead of Women's Ashes start

Heather Knight says preparations have been “pretty average” less than a week out from T20Is

England captain Heather Knight has admitted to “concerns and anxieties” among the touring party in Australia after news of a support staff member testing positive for Covid-19, the latest disruption to their preparations ahead of the Women’s Ashes. The unidentified individual received a positive result in the second round of PCR tests conducted since England’s arrival in Australia. They are now in isolation and will remain in Canberra while the group moves on to Adelaide ahead of the T20I leg of the Ashes, which starts on Thursday. No other positives have been reported, with a further round of testing to be carried out before the team flies by charter on Monday.England have been in Australia for less than a week and were already having to rejig their plans after the schedule was changed in the run-up to departure – the T20Is were brought forward, ahead of the one-off Test, due to quarantine requirements for the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.Related

Women's Ashes walks Covid tightrope ahead of World Cup

They then saw their first outdoor training session affected by torrential rain, with Knight describing England’s build-up so far as “pretty average”.The discovery of a positive Covid case in the camp has added to the restrictions England are under – although two scheduled intra-squad warm-up games in Canberra this weekend will still take place – amid an atmosphere of extreme caution before the World Cup.”We were prepared for this,” Knight said, “I think it would be pretty naive to think we wouldn’t be affected by it [Covid-19] but there’s concern and anxieties from the group. We’ve had to live under pretty strict protocols since we’ve arrived, we’ve only been allowed to socialise outdoors for exactly this reason, to try and limit the spread.”It’s going to be a nervous 24-48 hours, but the PCR tests we’ve done already have all come back negative. Fingers crossed. It was always going to be affected by Covid. We’ve had to ‘safe live’ for two weeks in the UK, from Christmas pretty much, just in order to get out here. It’s been a colossal effort.”With Covid numbers in England having surged during December after the arrival of the Omicron variant, players were told to limit contacts to those within their household ahead of departure for Australia – leading to some unusual training routines. Alongside the changes to the Ashes itinerary, Knight said it been “quite hard to focus on the cricket”.”It’s not been ideal, that’s for sure,” she said. “The lead-up has been pretty average, but that’s all out of our control. For those two weeks before we left England we could only train as individuals, with our households, so we’ve had mums feeding bowling machines, boyfriends slinging, girlfriends slinging, dads batting, and supporting our training. As you can imagine it’s been pretty comical, but also not ideal preparation for a series of this magnitude.”We found out that with that quarantine in New Zealand, our preparation’s going to be a bit shorter. Getting our heads around that and trying to find ways to get ourselves ready, physically and mentally, has been a little bit hard, and then you throw Covid in there and shifting goalposts with the World Cup as well, as you can imagine it’s been quite hard to focus on the cricket.”It didn’t help that the first training session it rained cats and dogs. We haven’t had the best preparation but what we’ve got to do is try and make the most of it.”Changes to regulations while the squad was in the air mean players are currently unable to eat together at restaurants outdoors, although Knight was hopeful of that being relaxed at some stage.”Restrictions are in place to try and protect the integrity of the series, but we also need to make sure that we look after players and staff and everyone who’s out here as well,” she said. “We need to find that balance between trying to keep the integrity of the series and staying as safe as possible but also feeling like you can live within the restrictions with a tiny bit of freedom, which I think is important.”The switch to beginning the series with three T20Is has meant changes to planning – in particular how to get overs into the bowlers ahead of the Test – but Knight also suggested that T20 was her side’s “strongest format” and represented an opportunity to start the series well. She also said the disruption may help to “take the pressure off” against the No. 1-ranked Australians.”Of course there’s a frustration but it’s the times we’re living in at the moment,” she said. “It’s very challenging to tour with Covid around. The restrictions we’ve been under have changed as well, so just being adaptable to that has been quite tricky. As soon as you get your head around something, something else changes.”But we’ve got no other option but to try and make the most of it and do the best we can. Maybe it will take the pressure off, we’ve just got to find a way to free up, go out there and throw caution to the wind a bit. Mentally it’s going to be tough but we’re doing everything we can to try and get ourselves prepped and ready for the first game.”England are looking to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2015, with three T20Is, three ODIs and a Test to be played under the multi-format points system. The touring party includes an England A squad, who will provide warm-up opposition before playing their own fixtures against Australia A.

Tottenham worried £60m player could be out until 2025 with Wilson Odobert

Tottenham Hotspur officials are concerned that a “real force” in their squad could be missing until next year, alongside winger Wilson Odobert, who recently underwent surgery on his right hamstring.

Odobert tipped for lengthy absence after Spurs surgery

Spurs officially announced that Odobert had a successful procedure on his hamstring last weekend, with the £25 million winger signed from Burnley now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he begins his recovery.

Odobert has endured a pretty unlucky start to his Lilywhites career since making the move from Turf Moor, missing their last seven Premier League games with a combination of hamstring and thigh problems, and he’s managed just 272 minutes across all competitions as a result.

The Frenchman is now set to miss even more game time following his surgery, with ex-Spurs scout Bryan King predicting that he could be out until late February at the earliest.

“I can’t see him returning before the end of February,” said King to Tottenham News earlier this week.

“That is quite a serious operation that he has had. For someone to have it at this age, it is very hard on him, he was progressing quite well. Now he has had to undergo surgery which will leave him out for quite some time.”

Odobert’s absence, and manager Ange Postecoglou’s resulting selection headache, is compounded by mainstay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game domestic ban, which will result in the Uruguay international missing an array of crucial Premier League games and their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Man United.

Bentancur isn’t eligible for a single domestic match until Boxing Day, but he is at least permitted to play European matches during his English ban.

On top of this, Postecoglou is also set to be without striker Richarlison, who has been sidelined with his own hamstring problem. The Brazil international’s struggles with injury have resulted in him missing 10 games across all competitions already this term, which is a crying shame for Richarlison after his decision to reject a move to Saudi Arabia in the summer and fight for his place at Spurs (ESPN).

Tottenham worried Richarlison will be out injured until next year

According to GiveMeSport, it gets worse for the £60 million forward. Those within Tottenham are worried that Richarlison will be out injured until next year, and that could significantly affect his market value, as chairman Daniel Levy ponders whether to cut his losses on the ex-Everton star.

Spurs are apparently hoping he makes a swift recovery and returns to form, so Richarlison can tempt interested parties into bidding. The 27-year-old enjoyed a terrific purple patch under Postecoglou midway through 2023/2024, and that kind of run would work wonders to secure him a move away in 2025.

“I’ve never thought in those terms because if you do, you box yourself in,” said Postecoglou on Richarlison last season.

“What I want is for Richy to keep improving, and keep developing his football and becoming a real force for us, and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Faulkner leaves PSL after payment row with PCB

The PCB have rejected his accusations, calling his behaviour “reprehensible” and declaring he would not be a part of future PSL drafts

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Feb-2022

James Faulkner accused the PCB of not honouring the contractually agreed payments•Pakistan Super League

James Faulkner has left the Pakistan Super League abruptly over a payment dispute, alleging that the PCB hasn’t honoured his contract and has instead “continued to lie” to him. The PCB, in response, lambasted Faulkner’s conduct as “reprehensible”, announcing the Australian would be banned from future PSL drafts, and accused him of misbehaving with immigration authorities and letting his side down.Faulkner, who has not played Quetta Gladiators’ last three games, was understood to have grown increasingly agitated over the matter and had been negotiating with the PCB over the issue. Things became so heated on Friday, however, that he threw his bat and helmet from the lobby floor balcony onto a hotel chandelier after a discussion with a PCB official before leaving for the airport. He paid the hotel for damages before leaving. He posted two tweets apologising to Pakistan cricket fans and calling his treatment at the hands of the PCB and the PSL “a disgrace”.James Faulkner threw his bat and helmet onto a chandelier after a discussion with a PCB official

“I apologise to the Pakistan cricket fans. But unfortunately I’ve had to withdraw from the last 2 matches and leave the @thePSLt20 due to the @TheRealPCB not honouring my contractual agreement/payments. I’ve been here the whole duration and they have continued to lie to me. It hurts to leave as I wanted to help to get international cricket back in Pakistan as there is so much young talent and the fans are amazing. But the treatment I have received has been a disgrace from the @TheRealPCB and @thePSLt20. I’m sure you all understand my position.”The PCB released a joint statement with Quetta Gladiators, calling Faulkner’s allegations baseless and expressing dismay at his “reprehensible behaviour”. The statement said Faulkner’s agent sent UK bank account details to transfer fee payments to, before sending revised bank account details the following month, this time for a bank account in Australia. By this time, the PCB had already transferred 70% of the money owed to the players, including Faulkner. ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB told Faulkner the payment could not be made again to a different account until the initial payment was reversed.Whether Faulkner is paid the remaining 30% is unclear yet. The PCB believe Faulkner to have breached his contract, and say it is a matter they will review.”In the seven years of the HBL Pakistan Super League, no player has ever complained about the nonfulfillment of the PCB’s contractual obligations,” the PCB said. “In spite of the money being transferred and received in his account, Mr Faulkner continued to insist that a second duplicate payment of the same amount be made to his account in Australia. This meant Mr Faulkner would have been paid twice. He further threatened and refused to participate in his side’s match against Multan Sultans on Friday afternoon until his money demands were met.”The PCB, as a responsible organisation, engaged with Mr Faulkner early Friday afternoon in an attempt to reason with him. Despite his reprehensible and insulting behavior during the conversation, Mr Faulkner was assured that all his grievances would be addressed. He refused to reconsider his decision to take the field in a crucial match for his side, let his team down and demanded that his travel arrangements be immediately made.”Prior to his departure on Saturday morning, Mr Faulkner caused deliberate damage to the hotel property and as a result had to pay damages to the hotel management. The PCB later also received reports and complaints from the immigration authorities that Mr Faulkner had acted inappropriately and abusively at the airport. It has been unanimously agreed by the PCB and the franchises that Mr James Faulkner will not be drafted in future HBL Pakistan Super League events.”Faulkner played six PSL games this season, taking six wickets and scoring 49 runs.

Sky Sports: £35k-p/w Man Utd player who Amorim is happy with may now leave

A Manchester United player who Ruben Amorim and INEOS are happy with could leave Old Trafford in 2025, according to Sky Sports.

Players who may leave Man Utd in 2025

The Red Devils are now in another new era under head coach Amorim and have made a positive start under the Portuguese coach, winning two and drawing one of their first three games.

Real Madrid talking to Man Utd about £85k-p/w ace who Amorim thinks is key

Real Madrid are keen on signing a Manchester United player who has become a key player in recent seasons.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 2, 2024

Fans have already been seeing signs of a change in playing style under Amorim, and in the transfer market, there could also be plenty of movement in 2025.

In regards to exits, a number of players are out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and will therefore be able to talk to clubs outside of England in January over a pre-contract agreement.

As can be seen, five players on the books at Man Utd are on course to become free agents, although a new deal for Amad Diallo appears to be in the pipeline.

Unfortunately for Christian Eriksen, it looks as if his days as a Red Devils player are numbered, with Eriksen likely to leave Man Utd for free at the end of the season. Now, it looks as if another player who is still under contract for a number of years could join him in a 2025 exit.

Altay Bayindir could leave Man Utd – Sky Sports

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man Utd goalkeeper Altay Bayindir could leave Old Trafford in either January or in the summer.

Despite Amorim and INEOS being “very satisfied” with the ‘keeper, Plettenberg states that Bayindir “is simply too good to be a number two behind Andre Onana and currently has no prospects for regular playing time”.

Bayindir arrived in Manchester from Fenerbahce for £4.3m in September 2023 following David de Gea and Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford exits.

The Turkey international has rivalled Onana since moving to Old Trafford but has found game time hard to come by, making just three appearances in all competitions.

Under contract until 2027, Bayindir has played in United’s two EFL Cup games in 2024/25, but by the looks of it, an exit in the New Year could be on the cards for the £35,000-a-week shot-stopper.

Should a permanent exit away from United materialise, it will be looked back on as a transfer to forget, with former director John Murtough previously hailing Bayindir after he signed, saying:

“Altay is an excellent addition to our squad and adds further quality to our already strong group of experienced goalkeepers. Having consistently performed at a high level in a strong European league, he has the qualities to support us in achieving our ambitions across all competitions this season and beyond.”
