O Campeonato Carioca é o primeiro desafio.

Chelsea have just found a star who’s a lot like Fabregas and Hazard

Cole Palmer is at it again, and again and again. Once the Chelsea star found the net with his first goal of the game against Brighton on Saturday afternoon, few would have expected the floodgates to open in such a manner.

Palmer has surprised many throughout this time at Stamford Bridge but the way in which he scored his first two goals over the weekend was rather unremarkable.

He was in the right place at the right time to find the net from Nicolas Jackson’s cut-back and then stroked home a penalty, as he so often does.

What he did next was scintilating, it was staggering. Palmer racked up two more – one a simply ridiculous free-kick – to score four goals before the half-time whistle had even been blown.

By his standards, this had been a quiet opening to the season on the goalscoring front but he now has six goals in as many matches in the Premier League this term.

It’s safe to say he’s on his way to replicating some Chelsea greats of the past. Like Eden Hazard, he is Chelsea’s new talisman.

Eden Hazard's time at Chelsea

On his day, the Belgian was one of the best players in the Premier League. His ability to dribble past opponents with ease, his ability to unlock a defence and his ability to find the net was pretty much unmatched at the time of his peak.

Like Palmer, he could dazzle an opposition, leave them in his dust and to wonder what on earth had just happened.

Remember that goal against Arsenal? Of course you do. Hazard has received the ball close the half way line before dancing beyond Francis Coquelin, leaving Laurent Koscielny in his wake and then finding the back of the net.

Off went Hazard, gleeful and smug at what he had just done. Well, Palmer possesses a similar sort of look after he’s just scored. He’s got that cheeky grin, he’s got that famous celebration and he’s becoming every bit as important as that man Hazard was.

During his time at the Bridge, the winger was a marvel, scoring 110 goals and supplying 85 assists in 352 outings for the club. It’s not a bad record, is it?

Chelsea may have finally found their new talisman in Palmer but they’ve also now stumbled upon a player who’s argubly rather more similar.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Chelsea's Hazard and Fabregas hybrid

Over the summer, Chelsea did plenty of business. Isn’t that a surprising turn of events? We jest, of course, but one of the most interesting names to arrive was Jadon Sancho.

During his days at Borussia Dortmund, he was “astonishing” in the words of Owen Hargreaves, amassing 53 goals and 67 assists in 158 games. There was a particularly remarkable campaign during 2019/20 where he scored 17 times and supplied an equal number of assists in Bundesliga action.

It was that red-hot season that led him to become one of the most sought-after players in Europe. It was that year and the subsequent term that led Manchester United to pay a whopping £73m for his services. Unfortunately, it never quite happened for him at Old Trafford.

Sancho joined Chelsea this summer on an initial loan deal having found the net on just 12 occasions in United red, and supplying six assists. Those are awful numbers for someone who was so prolific in that third of the pitch during his days in Germany.

Not enjoying the best of relationships with Erik ten Hag, the English winger had to get out and he duly did over the summer. Moving to west London, he is enjoying quite the start to life under Enzo Maresca, emulating a certain Hazard and another former Blue in Cesc Fabregas in the process.

Indeed, over the weekend Sancho became just the third Chelsea player to get an assist in each of his first three Premier League outings, joining Hazard (2012) and Fabregas (2014) in the process.

Interesingly enough, Sancho combines the best of those two players. Like the Belgian, he’s a wonderful dribbler of the ball, ranking in the best 3% of positionally similar players over the last year for succesful take-ons per 90 minutes with 3.76. Like Fabregas, he’s a tremendous creator, ranking among the top 18% of wingers for progressive passes.

Cast our mind back that dazzling 19/20 season and those creative numbers were sky-high, supplying 0.63 assists per 90, enough to rank him in the best 2% of wingers in the Bundesliga that term.

Fabregas ended his Premier League career with a staggering 118 assists in 350 games so the Englishman has some catching up to do. That said, you can clearly see where the parallels lie.

Some may have laughed when Chelsea signed Sancho on deadline day but he is quickly proving the doubters wrong. He already looks like a fine addition to the pack.

Essex turn the screw as Glamorgan collapse again

Browne, Pepper give Essex commanding lead as Glamorgan stare down heavy defeat

Glamorgan 134 (Snater 6-39) and 71 for 6 (Cooke 39*, Porter 2-14, Cook 2-17) trail Essex 320 (Browne 102, Pepper 63) by 115 runsGlamorgan’s batsmen collapsed for a second time in two days as Essex turned the screw after notching a 186-run first-innings lead.Having finally dismissed Essex for 320 in 101.2 overs, the home county slumped to 20 for 5 against a barrage of seam bowling from Sam Cooke and Jamie Porter that saw them both take 2 for 10 in the opening eight overs. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Steven Reingold was inexplicably run out going for a quick single with Billy Root. And when the hero of the first innings, Shane Snater, came on and trapped Dan Douthwaite lbw with his third ball in the 11th over, Glamorgan were 29 for 6 and hoping to scrape past their all-time worst score of 43 against Essex at The Gnoll, in Neath, in 1935.They managed to do that and ended on 71 for 6 thanks to a stubborn 39 from skipper Chris Cooke, who put on an unbeaten 42 with Andrew Salter for the sixth wicket. It means Glamorgan will still need to score 115 runs on the third day to avoid an innings defeat.Having resumed 42 runs behind Glamorgan’s first-innings total of 134, Essex took just over an hour to establish a lead and lost England hopeful Dan Lawrence in the process. Lawrence lasted eight overs and added a mere five runs to his total before he was caught off Andrew Salter.Opener Nick Browne played the anchor role as he progressed to his first century of the season. Michael Pepper added some fireworks in a partnership that amassed 108 runs for the fourth wicket as Essex progressed to 208 for 4.Pepper reached his half-century in the over before Browne went to three figures. The Essex opener’s century came up just before lunch with a four off Lukas Carey in the 71st over in which he faced 219 balls. He lasted only four more balls after that when he was teased out by the off-spin of Reingold. That brought Josh Rymell to the wicket on his first-class debut and he picked up a golden duck as he was trapped lbw off Douthwaite. That meant Essex were 217 for 5 at lunch, 83 ahead, and they lost two quick wickets after the resumption. Pepper was first to go, caught and bowled by Reingold. He hit 11 fours and a six in his 63 and Reingold struck again four overs later when he had Simon Harmer caught behind for two. At that stage Reingold, on his first-class debut, had 3 for 3 off 3.1 overs and was making a major impact. From 233 for 7, Essex continued to build a lead as Glamorgan maintained their all-spin attack with Reingold and Slater, eventually taking the new ball in the 85th over. Adam Wheater and Snater then added 79 for the seventh wicket as the lead grew to 178 and left them needing 38 to secure the fourth batting point.Wheater was bowled by Michael Hogan for 39, a knock that included seven boundaries, and Snater followed up his 6 for 39 with 48 before he was last man out to a catch off Salter.Glamorgan got off to a disastrous start when Hamish Rutherford was trapped lbw by Porter with the second ball of the innings and fellow opener David Lloyd completed his pair when he went the same way to Cook.Wickets tumbled at regular intervals until the Salter-Cooke combination, but Glamorgan were still staring at a heavy defeat.

Bess Heath, Katie Levick to the fore as Northern Diamonds secure top-three finish

Knockout place secured after comfortable win against local rivals Thunder

ECB Reporters' Network12-Sep-2021

Bess Heath made an unbeaten 78•Getty Images

Northern Diamonds booked a Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy knockout spot after hammering Thunder by 105 runs in their clash at Emirates Riverside. Diamonds put forward a brilliant effort with the bat as Bess Heath top scored with an unbeaten 78, but there were also half-centuries for Beth Langston and Sterre Kalis along with a score of 48 from Ami Campbell in their innings of 294 for 5.Although Georgie Boyce offered resistance with a knock of 67, the chase always appeared too much for the visitors amid miserly bowling from Hollie Armitage and company. Katie Levick claimed four wickets, while Armitage notched two herself to allow the hosts to ease over the line ahead of a crucial contest next week against table-topping Southern Vipers.Thunder won the toss and inserted the home side in cloudy conditions at Chester-le-Street. Armitage was unable to build on her impressive knock in Diamonds’ win over Western Storm on Friday, picking out Natalie Brown at point off the bowling of Alice Dyson for only 7. Kalis calmed proceedings alongside Rachel Hopkins, producing a stand worth 47 for the second wicket.Hopkins took her time to settle, and just when she appeared to be finding her rhythm Brown found her outside edge, allowing Eleanor Threlkeld to make a sharp grab. Kalis pressed forward in her innings and found the boundary with ease on her way to a fine half-century from 57 balls. The Netherlands international was dismissed a great catch by Sophia Turner at cover, but Campbell and Heath ensured the Diamonds maintained their momentum.Campbell took the attack to Alex Hartley dispatching two straight sixes over the head of the left-arm spinner. The left-hander tried to go for another maximum to reach her half-century, but was caught on the boundary by Laura Marshall. But Heath and Langston launched an assault on the Thunder bowlers late in the innings, putting on a stand of 91 for the seventh wicket. Heath provided the platform before Langston powered a quick-fire fifty from 28 balls to usher Diamonds to a strong total. The visitors made a measured start to their replay as Boyce found the boundary off the bowling of Ella Telford. Phoebe Graham entered the attack at the Finchale End to end the opening stand, removing Seren Smale for 12. Threlkeld and Daisy Mullan were unable to time the ball amid tight bowling from the hosts and paid the price with their wickets. Boyce held the key for the Thunder, and although she was dropped on 49 by Telford, she capitalised by reaching an 84-ball fifty. The chase was all but over for the Thunder when Armitage removed Boyce for a solid 67 as she attempted to find the boundary, before the Diamonds skipper ran out Brown at the non-striker’s end.Thunder’s required rate soared above 15 runs per over as the hosts continued their stranglehold of the contest, despite a stand worth 55 from Marshall and Laura Jackson. Levick notched late wickets to claim figures of 4 for 34 to ensure the hosts closed out a comfortable win and a place in the top three.

Forget Trent: Liverpool have another £100m star in the making

Liverpool Football Club have an interesting period of time coming up off the pitch. New boss Arne Slot has made a superb start to his tenure as manager, with his side currently sitting top of the Premier League table on 18 points, one more than Manchester City and Arsenal in second and third, respectively.

Off the pitch, however, some of their biggest stars have some important decisions to make regarding their current deal.. The contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are set to expire at the end of the season.

Salah and Van Dijk would be not as much of a loss given they are 32 and 33 years old respectively. However, it would be a huge blow to lose local hero, Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation

The 26-year-old England international is a product of Liverpool’s esteemed academy that has produced the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Steve McMannaman. He is the latest Merseysider off that famous production line.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

The Reds’ number 66 has an extraordinary record for his boyhood club. He has played 319 times for the club, scoring 19 times and registering an incredible 83 assists. He has registered ten or more assists in the Premier League in three separate seasons.

The Englishman, who has 32 caps and four goals for his country, has been a crucial player for the Reds in recent years. He was imperative to Jurgen Klopp’s dominant Liverpool side in the late 2010s, helping win their first Premier League title and sixth European Cup.

Recent reports in Spain have suggested the right-back could make a move from Anfield to the Santiago Bernabeu and join Real Madrid on a free transfer. Los Blancos can negotiate a deal with him in January and could look to wrap it up before any other side, or Liverpool, beat them to it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Man United

It is certainly a precarious situation for the Reds, who would no doubt love to keep hold of their star man. Not only would he leave the club, but they might not make any money on the departure, given he is set to depart on a free.

Alexander-Arnold is valued at £58.4m as per Transfermarkt, although that could be more if his contract was not set to expire, perhaps even as high as £100m. Liverpool might well have another player who could reach that value, given his performances this campaign.

Liverpool’s next £100m star

The player in question here is Netherlands midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. The 22-year-old has been in superb form under Slot this season and has been playing a relatively new role as a deep-lying midfielder.

This term, the Ajax academy graduate has played nine times for the Reds, completing 90 minutes in every single one of their games so far. He has been excellent from a defensive standpoint, using his long legs to win balls back with ease, before progressing play with line-breaking passes.

That is certainly something reflected in his stats from the 2024/25 Premier League season so far, courtesy of Sofascore. The midfielder has completed an average of 32.3 passes in the opposition’s half per 90 minutes and has won an impressive 4.9 ground duels each game.

He could be well on his way to becoming Liverpool’s own Declan Rice. The England international has emerged as one of the best number six and eight hybrids in world football and was sold to Arsenal from West Ham for £105m last summer, having been described as among the “top five” midfielders in the game by compatriot, Conor Gallagher.

The Gunners number 41 plays a similar role to that of the Dutch international now, and is of a similar profile – as FBref have noted, among midfielders operating in the Champions League this season – using his long limbs to retrieve the ball before progressive play or explosively carrying forwards.

Ryan Gravenberch for Liverpool

Although he is worth just £33.4m, now, Gravenberch’s value as per Transfermarkt is continuing to rise thanks to his impressive performances this season, and he could well hit the £105m value of the man he is likened to, Rice, if he keeps it up.

Still only 22 years of age, the Dutchman is already looking like something of a “Rolls Royce” – as per journalist Declan Carr. If he continues these performances for the Reds this season, there is no reason why he cannot become their next player worth £100m or more.

Liverpool could unearth a bigger talent than Gravenberch in "special" teen

The Anfield star may well have another superstar on their hands.

Ipswich Town may sell Liam Delap to rivals for record £30m+ fee in January

Ipswich Town could now sell star striker Liam Delap in the January transfer window to a Premier League rival, according to a new report.

Delap a shining light in Ipswich Town's start to Premier League season

The Tractor Boys and Kieran McKenna are still searching for their first Premier League win of the 2024/25 season, with the latest setback coming at Portman Road against Everton. McKenna’s side fell to a frustrating 2-0 defeat to the Toffees, with first-half goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane enough to earn the visitors three points.

Ipswich let youth star leave for £0, now he’s outperforming Hutchinson

Ipswich Town must have some regrets when it comes to letting this youth player go.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 21, 2024

It has been a disappointing start to the campaign, but one shining light has been the form of forward Delap after his permanent move from Manchester City in the summer.

Delap netted his first goal for the club against Fulham and followed that up with a brace against Aston Villa and another in the loss to West Ham before the international break.

McKenna has praised Delap’s start to life at Portman Road, saying: “Liam has had a very good start. He is a young striker who has had three loans in the Championship and he is still finding his way in the game.

“His body has developed a lot over the last 12 months, which I think is important for a forward player playing in the physicality of the Premier League and even in the Championship. He is developing well.

“For 21 years of age, the start he has had in the Premier League is really promising. But it is a handful of games and he knows there is still a long road ahead of him and lots of things to still improve on. He has made some really good first strides though.”

However, his impressive form has caught the eye of a number of Premier League rivals, with a concerning transfer update now emerging.

Tottenham leading race to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town

According to Caught Offside, Tottenham are considering a move to sign Delap from Ipswich Town in January. The report states that Ipswich have an asking price of €40m (£33.3m) when it comes to the £20,000-a-week forward, with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and former club Manchester City also keen.

Ipswich are prepared to evaluate offers for Delap in the New Year and would make a huge profit on the initial £15m they spent in the summer, should they accept a £33m+ offer.

It is Spurs who are leading the race for Delap’s services, though, and any exit over £30m would smash the club’s current transfer sale. For now, Delap will be looking to continue his solid start to the campaign, hoping that more goals in the top flight will translate into Premier League wins for the Tractor Boys.
