49ers now eyeing Leeds move for £10m attacker as Jonathan Rowe alternative

With the Championship campaign underway, Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a move to sign an alternative to Jonathan Rowe who has been valued at up to £10m this summer.

Leeds transfer news

Following the heartbreak of last season's Wembley defeat, Leeds will be hoping to go again in pursuit of what they'll desperately want to be a successful promotion push.

Daniel Farke

As ever though, it's unlikely to be an easy route to the Premier League, with the Whites opening their campaign with a disappointing, action-packed 3-3 draw against newly-promoted Portsmouth.

Salvaging a point, those at Elland Road at least showed plenty of fight and the type of fight that they may yet need to show in the remainder of the summer transfer window if they want to land their targets.

That could yet include in their pursuit for Rowe, who has made his desire to leave Norwich City clear after dropping out of their squad in an opening-day defeat against Oxford United. Alas, as things stand, the winger remains a Norwich player, with the Canaries' £15m price tag reportedly deemed too steep for the likes of Marseille.

With that said, the Whites and the 49ers Enterprises may now turn to an alternative option. According to TEAMtalk, the 49ers and Leeds are now eyeing a move to sign Million Manhoef from Stoke City before the end of the transfer window, with the Potters valuing him at up to £10m. The winger has reportedly attracted the interest of a number of Championship clubs, with Leeds among those exploring the option of a move.

A cheaper alternative to Rowe and a player who could help fill the void left behind by Crysencio Summerville, Leeds' pursuit of Manhoef could prove to be a stroke of genius.

"Great" Manhoef can replicate Rowe's quality

It's no real shock that Norwich value Rowe at a hefty £15m this summer, but that may leave Leeds with no choice other than to pursue Manhoef over the the want-away winger. The Stoke star has shown glimpses of his quality since arriving in January, which has seemingly been enough to attract those in Yorkshire to a player more than capable of replicating Rowe's quality on the right-hand side.

In the equivalent of just over nine games, Manhoef managed five goal involvements and was outperforming his expected goals in positive signs that there's plenty more to come from the 22-year-old Dutchman.

On the cusp of bursting into life for the Potters, Leeds could be wise to make their move for Manhoef this summer, rather than wait for his price tag to reach levels similar to that of Rowe.

Described as a "great signing" for Stoke by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the former Premier League club may not be keen to lose their winger just seven months after securing his signature, however.

Talks being held: Liverpool consider late bid for £75m Van Dijk successor

Liverpool won at Anfield, but this time, there was no fusillade of fist pumps showered toward the Kop End, no larger-than-life German zapping around and infecting everyone with his energy.

Arne Slot is a cooler customer, businesslike, unflappable. A charismatic and disarming character at times, yes, but also a level head with his sights set on calmly tinkering away at his talented squad, inherited from Jurgen Klopp, and bringing it into contention at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

There's of course the return of the Champions League to look forward to too – the revamped group stage draw is on Thursday – which surely means that a new signing should be brought in to allow the Reds to fight across all fronts, with central defence a priority in this regard.

Champions League 2024/25: How the new format works & current standings

UEFA has changed the Champions League format for the 2024/25 season. Here’s an overview of how things work and the current standings after Matchday 2.

1 ByAlex Caple Oct 2, 2024 Liverpool hold talks over centre-back signing

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is on a shortlist of options at Liverpool for the week ahead, with Richard Hughes and co not ruling out signing a centre-back.

Sepp van den Berg has been sold to Brentford for £25m while Joe Gomez is assessing his options in the market, and Guehi has the perfect skill set to succeed under Slot's leadership.

Internal talks have been held and Liverpool must now consider whether they wish to fork out the £75m fee that Palace demand. With Newcastle United having lodged four offers already this summer, FSG better act quickly at this late stage of the window.

Why Marc Guehi would start for Liverpool

Crystal Palace signed the defender in an £18m deal three years ago, bringing him in from Chelsea. He has since made 113 appearances and risen to a position as one of England's foremost centre-backs.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Hailed for his "monster" defending by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, Guehi certainly has what it takes to succeed at a high-flying outfit such as Liverpool, potentially even surpassing expectations and becoming a leading member throughout an illustrious period under Slot's leadership.

Guehi has still only featured five times under Oliver Glasner due to injuries throughout the second half of last season, but he still managed to showcase his technique and ball-playing skills under Roy Hodgson.

Palace haven't started the 2024/25 term with the same aplomb that they finished last year with but the style of football is identifiable and Guehi has been a linchpin, averaging 78.5 touches per game so far, completing 88% of his passes and winning a whopping 75% of his duels (six per game).

Such defensive steel, mixed with an impressive and varied passing game, suggests that he would be perfect for Slot's system and that he might even be the perfect man to succeed Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk – who is out of contract at the end of the season…

The perfect Van Dijk successor

Slot's brand of football carries some slick and stylish – some would say liquid – elements, but two matches in, an extra layer of composure is discernible from what Klopp brought to the table.

Ipswich Town and Brentford have been defeated to start the season off with six points, and while neither display was perfect, Liverpool have yet to concede, leading the way in xGA, which is basically the expected goals conceded from the shots faced, two matchweeks in.

Of course, it's very early in the day, and tougher tests lie ahead, but Liverpool's xGA of 0.89, in simple terms, means that they have stood firm and limited their opponents to half-hearted chances. Having faced 15 shots over the two affairs, xG rules that Liverpool have been less than probable to concede a single goal.

Alisson plays a big part in that, of course, but none bigger than Van Dijk, who has been as imperious as ever across his opening fixtures, protecting his goal against the Bees to keep his 48th clean sheet in 100 Premier League matches at Anfield, losing only twice.

The 33-year-old is one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history, and he's carried his long-standing power into the fresh campaign, notably completing 95% of his passes and winning 65% of his duels thus far, as per Sofascore.

He who is tasked with succeeding the Netherlands and Liverpool captain will face a tough task indeed, though Guehi has the properties to ensure the Reds' defensive strength might continue long into Slot's future at the helm.

England defender Marc Guehi

One of England's standout performers at Euro 2024, Guehi has been described as "one of those versatile CBs who can play both sides equally as comfortably" by analyst Ben Mattinson, adding further depth to the argument that he could replace Van Dijk, who has long dominated from the left side of Liverpool's backline.

The Reds titan issued a cryptic response by Sky Sports pundits when discussing Liverpool's victory over Brentford on Sunday evening, refusing to reveal his or the club's stance on his contract situation, but fans would rest a lot easier knowing that a plan, in one form or another, is in place.

Van Dijk has been described as "the best defender in the world" by Klopp in the past and it's true that he will pass the test of time when football's finest centre-backs are raised for debate.

But he's 34 at the end of the campaign, and may well opt against extending his £220k-per-week contract. Guehi would be a brilliant successor, and FSG must make their move before he falls into rival clutches.

Jonathan Trott has returned to Warwickshire as a batting consultant for the men’s squad.Trott, who retired in 2018 with a haul of 18,662 first-class runs and more than 12,000 more in List A and T20 cricket, performed a similar role for England during their winter tour of the subcontinent. He had previously had spells as batting coach with the U19 and Lions sides and was part of the England coaching team at various times during the 2020 international season. He was also batting coach at Kent in 2019.While Trott missed out on the role of Elite Batting Coach at the ECB – the job was given to Marcus Trescothick – he stood in for Trescothick during the limited-overs leg of the India tour after Trescothick suffered a family bereavement. Although Trott has no official role with England, it would be no surprise if he was called-in for further short-term engagements to allow breaks for the full-time coaching staff. The son of a professional batting coach, Trott has coached from a young age. Growing up in Cape Town, he ran sessions alongside Bob Woolmer and was credited by Dom Sibley for his help after he graduated to the England team.Trott will now bring his experience, including 52 Test caps between 2009 and 2015, back to the county game in support of Warwickshire’s coaching team of Mark Robinson, Graeme Welch, Tony Frost and Ian Westwood.Related

He will be a great support and mentor to the players and he could play a significant role in developing several members of the squad.”Since finishing his playing career at Edgbaston in 2018, Jonathan has also gone away and built a strong coaching portfolio, which has included county cricket with Kent and home and overseas series with England. We’re very happy to have him back with the Bears.”

Tom Westley grinds Worcestershire once more as pitch battle ensues

Lifeless surface leaves Essex facing tough victory push despite mountain of runs

George Dobell30-Apr-2021

Tom Westley pulls through the on side•Andrew Miller

You have to be careful what you wish for. Not so long ago, many of us bemoaned these early-season contests as they tended to provide too much assistance for seam bowlers. How were batters to learn to play the long innings that define Test matches on surfaces where 200 is par, we asked. And how are young spinners to bowl the volume of overs to gain experience? The prospect of too much assistance for seamers didn’t seem so bad here. Yes, Worcestershire’s spinner – a legspinner, at that – had the opportunity to bowl 46 overs. And yes, several Essex batters had the opportunity to build the sort of long innings that define Test cricket. But in terms of entertainment? Well, for much of the first two days this game had little competitive edge as Essex went on to register their highest score for five years.None of this should be read as a criticism of either side. Essex were admirably ruthless in grinding out the score that gives them the best chance of victory in this game and, despite not claiming a single bowling bonus point (which means they hadn’t taken a third wicket by the time they had bowled 110 overs), Worcestershire were admirably resilient in making them fight for nearly every run. Only in the last couple of hours of their innings did Essex take the run-rate above three-an-over – a late acceleration took it to 3.22 – and Ed Barnard’s final figures- he conceded 59 from his 30 overs – are testament to the excellent professional that he has become. Worcestershire have now spent four of their most recent seven days of cricket in the field. Barnard will scarcely have bowled a poor delivery in that time. And maybe the ends will justify the means for Essex. There were increasing signs that the ball was keeping low as the second-day progressed and Worcestershire could struggle against the spin of Simon Harmer, in particular. But just because a rock-fall can be dramatic, it doesn’t mean the 10,000 years of erosion that led to it is terrific entertainment. And the concern here is that such ‘entertainment’, in this day and age, is niche to the point of being an extremely tough sell.Which leads us to the age-old question: what’s the purpose of county cricket? Because if it’s to prepare players for Test cricket, you might just about justify this sort of surface. Certainly batters learn to graft for their runs and bowlers learn to persist. But if it’s to prepare players for Test cricket and provide entertainment, then they may have to think again. Pitches that lead to big scores don’t necessarily equate to good pitches and there is no incentive here for developing fast bowlers.Again, there’s no criticism of the groundstaff intended, either. This pitch was under water two months ago. It is remarkable that the teams are playing here at all. But there might be a case for allowing hybrid pitches to be used in such circumstances. Such pitches, with plugs of plastic accounting for around five percent of the surface, promote deeper and stronger grass growth. They are quickly becoming common in limited-overs cricket and might ensure a little more pace and bounce. As a result, they might more closely replicate the conditions found in Test cricket. For while spinners might have been entrusted with lots of overs here, it wasn’t because the pitch was offering them assistance. Rather, it was because it has been harder to score when there has been no pace with which to work. This has been a surface to make fast bowlers wish they had become sewage workers.Perhaps the extra points awarded for a draw this year are relevant, too. Certainly it feels as if those three extra points (increased from five to eight this season) have reduced sides’ inclination to take any risks. And while the intention behind that was worthy – to encourage teams to fight for draws and incentivise more attritional cricket – you wonder if the outcome is quite what was predicted. Right now, it feels as if the whole of county cricket is being run by Jose Mourinho; defend for days and try and catch the opposition on the break. It might help if these matches were scheduled later in the season when groundstaff have had a chance to inject some pace.Related

You wonder what Marcus Trescothick, England’s new elite batting coach, made of it as he watched on from the stands. Perhaps he will have concluded that Dan Lawrence, the only realistic contender here for a spot in the England squad ahead of the Test series against New Zealand, has the patience and determination to match his undoubted flair. Suffice to say, it was a shock when Lawrence fell 10 short of a century.Or perhaps he will conclude that Tom Westley should be on England’s radar again. Certainly there were strokes in this innings that marked Westley out as a player with more options than most – at one stage he turned a good-length ball through fine leg for four from outside off stump, as if it was easy – and with a hunger to add to his elegance. Since the start of 2016, he averages 103.60 against Worcestershire in first-class cricket. He made 213 against them at Chelmsford earlier in the month and now has three centuries in his four most recent matches on this ground; two for Essex and one for England Lions. It was a surprise when he fell, top-edging an attempted slog-sweep off Jake Libby’s first delivery.”It’s a very placid wicket,” Westley said afterwards. “Pretty dead. Taking 20 wickets will be a monumental effort.”I felt scratchy when batting. It was infuriating. Slow going. But we are very happy. It’s not often you get 500 on the board.”Later, as Simon Harmer, Paul Walter and Ryan ten Doeschate accelerated, Brett D’Oliveira was hit for three sixes in an over and the normally excellent Ben Cox missed another chance – his third of the innings, this one a stumping – when ten Doeschate advanced down the wicket. Worcestershire’s bowlers deserved better from both their fielders and their pitches.

Ten Hag must drop Rashford to unleash Man Utd star who’s "like Ryan Giggs"

After putting faith in Erik ten Hag following Manchester United’s FA Cup success at the back end of last season, this was not the start that the new INEOS ownership group were hoping for.

United have three points from their opening two games of the campaign, tasting defeat to Brighton in last-gasp fashion and leaving it late themselves to beat Fulham. They do have a new hero though in Dutchman Joshua Zirkzee.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

Whether he starts against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon remains to be seen but there should be some changes to the starting XI if they are to have any chance of defeating Arne Slot’s men.

Mason Mount has been ruled out through injury but even without his blow, a change in system was surely required. To put it politely, Bruno Fernandes playing as a false 9 has not worked.

Fernandes will likely move back into a deeper role today where Mount was playing. That would then potentially mean a first start for the aforementioned Zirkzee.

Ten Hag can ease Mount blow by unleashing Man Utd star in new role

It may not be Joshua Zirkzee who fills the void of the Englishman…

ByRobbie Walls Sep 1, 2024

That may not be the only change with Marcus Rashford surely fighting for his place in the side.

Rashford's season so far

The last year has been a tough one for the poster boy of this great football club. Throughout the 2022/23 campaign, the forward was simply electric as he helped himself to 30 goals and ten assists in all competitions.

The regression we saw last season was quite something then, as Rashford found the net just eight times in 43 outings. Left out of the England squad for Euro 2024, it was deserved for a torrid season in front of goal.

Sadly, his form hasn’t improved much during the new campaign. Excluded from Lee Carsley’s first Three Lions squad, the 26-year-old is yet to find himself on the scoresheet after a rough couple of games.

Against Fulham on the Premier League’s opening night, he failed with all five dribble attempts and won just two of his eight duels. Things didn’t get a whole lot better in the loss against Brighton either

The best replacement for Rashford

With Amad scoring against Brighton last weekend it is unlikely that Ten Hag withdraws the Ivorian from his starting XI. As a result, it’s Rashford who must be replaced when they face their most daunting task of the season to date, Liverpool.

Alejandro Garnacho is yet to start in the league this term but deserves to at Old Trafford on Sunday. The scorer of that goal against Everton last season, he was one of United’s standout players, bagging ten times in all competitions. It’s certainly an impressive tally for someone who was still only 19 at the time.

Now 20, Garnacho is of course wiser and is ready to take the league by storm again. That must start against Liverpool this weekend.

Why? Well, with an out-of-form Rashford, Ten Hag must be wise to any weakness he can find in this Liverpool team. Trent Alexander-Arnold will no doubt gallivant forward and we know he’s susceptible defensively, so Garnacho should be the man to expose him.

Ranking in the top 5% of positionally similar players in Europe’s big leagues for progressive carries per 90, there aren’t many more dribblers on the continent as relentless as the Argentine youngster. That statistic perfectly backs up praise from Paul Ince, who once said of the young wide player: “He’s always trying to get past people, which is a great asset to have. He’s like Ryan Giggs.”

Alejandro Garnacho

Couple that with Alexander-Arnold’s culpability in one-on-one situations, ranking in the very bottom 1% for percentage of dribblers tackled among full-backs in Europe, and this seems like a recipe for success for United.

Manager Man Utd and INEOS wanted to replace Ten Hag soon available for free

Manchester United and INEOS’ top target to replace Erik ten Hag over the summer will soon be available for free, with Ben Jacobs providing a sack update on the Dutchman.

Man Utd off to poor start under Ten Hag

The Red Devils’ Premier League season may have got off to a positive start after an opening day win over Fulham, however, back-to-back defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool has already put Ten Hag under pressure.

He may have signed a new deal in the summer, however, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have already clashed regarding Man Utd and Ten Hag, with the former saying:

'I think they'd have looked at him, but thought, "Can we really get rid of a guy who has won two trophies in two years, who hasn't been backed by the proper structure, to bring another Dutch manager in?"' Carragher replied: 'What do you mean without a proper structure? He's gone out and brought in everyone he wanted.'

Meanwhile, presenter Mark Goldbridge has slammed the sack rumours regarding Ten Hag, saying: “To replace him, it will cost to sack him and then bring in a new manager in – and then that new manager probably doesn't want the players that Ten Hag's bought.

"We never stop hearing about 'Oh, it's another Dutch player', or 'It's another player that has played for Ten Hag'. You give Thomas Tuchel the job or whoever else, they've not used these players before – why should they do that?

"And in fairness to the next manager, why should they have to use the previous manager's toys, like they would want that as well? Man United are not financially great, we have debt, and we are not in a great position. So to sack the manager I think would please some United fans, but the longer-term damage that would cause to have to rebuild again could be catastrophic."

Speculation over Ten Hag’s position may only increase if results don’t improve quickly, which could mean a summer target may soon be in INEOS’ sights again.

Southgate soon available for free as Ten Hag sack update shared

Talking to GiveMeSport, journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Ten Hag’s job might not be safe the entire season at Old Trafford despite the new deal, with his future still in his hands currently.

Jacobs added that Gareth Southgate, who was a top target in the summer, ‘is effectively a free agent at the end of the year’ after his England departure.

Southgate was heavily linked with the position in the summer but was focused on England’s bid for glory at the European Championships, which resulted in heartbreak after a defeat to Spain in the final. Journalist Miguel Delaney said at the end of May that key figures in INEOS were keen on Southgate.

“I’ve repeatedly heard, the figure they wanted more than anyone else is Southgate, or certainly some of the key figures in INEOS want Southgate, but that’s obviously very difficult this summer.”

Therefore, his availability and the fact that Man Utd have once again struggled under Ten Hag could result in fresh rumours to Southgate.
