Moeen Ali vows to give his all in what remains of international career

‘I’ve had enough of a break from Test cricket’ says 33-year-old Moeen

George Dobell18-Nov-2020Moeen Ali has acknowledged he hasn’t “got that long left in international cricket” but has resolved to “give my all” in the time remaining.Moeen, now aged 33 and uncertain of his place in a first-choice side in any of the formats, admits he went through a stage where he “lost a lot of hunger”. But, having had time to reflect and recover, he is adamant he wants to “play as much I can”. And that includes Test cricket.”I know I haven’t got that long left in international cricket,” Moeen said from the team hotel in Cape Town on England’s first full day in South Africa. “But I’ll try my best to do as much as I can to get to the level I want to get. I’ve had enough of a break from Test cricket.”I think I was hungrier when I was younger. I think everyone is hungrier when they are trying to play Test cricket [for the first time]. I guess a year-and-a-half ago I definitely lost a lot of that hunger. But over the last six months I feel like it is coming back and I want to play Test cricket and play as much as I can.”I’ve not played for a while now and, having spent time with the family and thought about my game, if the call did come, I’d be quite keen to be on it. I’ve not retired or anything. It was just to take a step back from a format of the game.”ALSO READ: England plan full schedule, return of crowds for 2021 home summerMoeen’s availability will encourage the national selectors. He was either top or joint top wicket-taker on both his last two Test tours – to Sri Lanka and the Caribbean – and with Adil Rashid having doused hopes of a Test return, England were looking light on options ahead of tours to Sri Lanka and India. But there are still doubts about his form. He is averaging 11.20 in eight Tests since the start of that last tour to Sri Lanka in November 2018 and, while his ODI economy rate remains impressive (it’s 4.89 in his most recent eight games), he has taken just two wickets in that period. As a result, Jack Leach and Dom Bess may well be ahead of him in the race for Test selection and Rashid is England’s first-choice white-ball spinner. If Moeen is able to rediscover his best form, however, there’s little doubt he would be a huge asset. It’s not so long ago – 2016 – that he hit four Test centuries in the calendar year and, at the time he was dropped (in August 2019), he was the top wicket-taker in Test cricket in the previous 12 months. He could yet add depth to England’s batting and bite to their bowling, but he knows he has some work to do on his game to get back to those levels.”It’s been frustrating for me mentally,” he said. “That hunger has not been there in the last year or so. There have been glimpses but I know deep down I haven’t done well over a period of time.”It’s my job now to go out and perform. I need to get into a good mental space, which I have been working on for the last four or five months. It’s been difficult. But it’s about clearing everything out and starting afresh.”My priority is to try get my game to the level I know I can get it. There’s so much cricket and so much success to have. There’s an opportunity there to be one of the greatest sides ever and be part of that. That’s something I want to do. It’s such an exciting time moving forward. For me, right now, to play as much cricket as I can and do the best I can. I can give my all in the next couple of years to try and be part of this.”Moeen Ali heads to the nets•Getty Images

Meanwhile, Moeen welcomed news of England’s tour to Pakistan in October 2021, calling it “a massive moment for cricket”.”It’s massive,” Moeen said. “Having been there not so long ago, it was an amazing experience to play the PSL there. We can’t wait to go there in the future. It’s a massive moment for cricket going forward.”The teams that came to England this summer – West Indies and Pakistan – helped massively. They went through the whole bubble thing when cricket was on the edge. They helped massively with that. I think it’s right we go back after such a long time for the game itself and for Pakistan and cricket in the country.”

Liverpool in talks to sign £34m ace who’d make Trent unplayable in midfield

The Liverpool fanbase lives in a state of fear right now, concerned that the Arne Slot era will start without a senior transfer signing this summer.

In fairness, it's been a rather uninspiring start to the new chapter, as far as incomings are concerned. But sporting director Richard Hughes has ventured to allay concerns by revealing that moves will indeed be made, albeit toward the end of the window, once Slot has fully familiarised himself with the squad.

Much depends on how Liverpool's pre-season progresses, and whether Slot feels that there is a pressing concern to deal with. Central defence is the most probable position, with Joel Matip closing the door on his illustrious Redmen career this summer and Virgil van Dijk, 33, entering the final year of his contract.

However, Trent Alexander-Arnold is being pulled away from right back, toward the permanent clutches of the centre of the park, and while Conor Bradley is a tremendous talent, Liverpool could move to add some extra quality on the right flank.

Liverpool transfer news

According to German newspaper Sport Bild (July 15 edition) – via the Paisley Gates – the Merseysiders are locked in talks with German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen concerning the possible transfer of Jeremie Frimpong.

Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

The Netherlands international has a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract but that will expire next week, so FSG must make a swift decision, with a host of top European outfits also keen and the player eager to make the move to Merseyside.

What Jeremie Frimpong would bring to Liverpool

Instrumental in Xabi Alonso's side's invincible domestic campaign last season, Frimpong transcended the role of attacking wing-back, playing with unfettered freedom and notching 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.

Not bad going, with Frimpong's electric pace and unrelenting fury in pursuit of attacking success leading him to be hailed as a "monster" in the final third by The United Stand's Beth Tucker.

His ball-carrying ability is second to none, and this is something that Alexander-Arnold could exploit emphatically when – and indeed, if – placed in the engine room, with the England international ranking among the top 1% of positional peers for shot-creating actions and passes attempted and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90.

Alexander-Arnold's variation of passing is truly something to behold, and his ability to thread surgical balls through with world-class precision is something that Frimpong could thrive at the end of, with the constancy – and speed – of his darting runs into the danger area sure to leave Premier League defenders quaking.

Frimpong has been described as "one of the best wing-backs in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and if he were to play in Slot's system, barrelling down the wing with Alexander-Arnold pulling strings from the middle, Liverpool could unlock a partnership to strike fear across the entirety of Europe.

If his release clause is to expire next week, the Reds need to make their move quickly, lest they pass a glorious opportunity to sign a unique new attacking outlet.

Cummins, Paine's 'huge shift' in understanding racism

Australia’s Test captain, vice-captain on how BLM has opened up their world around sensitive issues

Daniel Brettig24-Dec-2020

Pat Cummins revealed he has at times been guilty of making hurtful “one liners” to players of colour•Getty Images

Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine and vice-captain Pat Cummins have admitted to spending most of their professional lives in blissful ignorance of racism in the society around them. Cummins revealed he had at times been guilty of making the sorts of hurtful “one liners” to players of colour that the national team have pledged to stamp out.Paine and Cummins were speaking as part of a series of videos put together by the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) and Cricket Australia (CA), under the banner of “Reflect Forward” as Australia’s national sport reckons with a long history of misdeeds in terms of inclusiveness. CA’s efforts to recognise Aboriginal Australia have been demonstrated by how both men’s and women’s teams now commence every series with a barefoot circle acknowledgement of first nations people, while the Johnny Mullagh Medal will be presented to the player of the MCG Test. The Australian women’s team have already broken down numerous barriers in their openness to discussing such issues, and it has taken time for the men to follow suit. The national team coach Justin Langer has conceded more should have been done earlier in enhancing his players’ understanding, something underlined by how Paine and Cummins spoke. Cummins, articulate and well-rounded, spoke volumes when he admitted to making comments he now regrets.”Just taking that extra second to think about what you say or do,” he said when asked about how he counselled young people to handle racism. “You might try to throw in a joke and I’ve definitely done this in the past, you say a little one liner or something off the top of your head and then just making sure you actually reflect on that and go actually ‘that’s not me’ or ‘I’ve said the wrong thing there, I don’t believe that, I don’t know why I’ve said that, and I hate how I’ve made that person feel’.”So try and fix that, try to make it a learning experience, but as a kid, just make up your own mind, your own opinions, don’t just go with the flow of other people around you. And if you do something you’re not comfortable with or you see something you’re not comfortable with, try and find a way you can get your message across to them that hang on, I don’t think this is acceptable, I hope you can think about that and reflect on that and maybe be better next time.”While Paine’s leadership has been strengthened by his own worldliness, having experienced life outside the elite end of the game to the point of considering retirement in 2017, he also spoke of how little he had actually considered issues of racism for the vast majority of his career.”Mine has only shifted in the last 12 months since the whole Black Lives Matter thing started to take off,” Paine said. “I was probably someone who, if I am totally honest, had my head in the sand a little bit and because it probably wasn’t a part of my world I didn’t have it as a big issue. That’s really opened my eyes to things and issues our Indigenous people, black people and people of all sort of different cultures around the world go through.Tim Paine says his awareness around BLM has greatly increased since the movement has gathered steam•Ryan Pierse/Getty Images

“For me, again, I probably just turned a blind eye to it a little bit, but since this has sort of got going I have taken time to speak to teammates — whether it’s in Tasmania or Hurricanes or club cricket — about how they feel about it and how it affects them. I probably didn’t realise how bad it was for people in our day. You saw it as something that was a long time ago and almost that attitude of ‘what can I do to help that anyway’. For me my learning has come from speaking to teammates, understanding more how it affects them and how I can help them through that.”The platform we have now as Australian cricketers, not that we can fix every issue, but we can use that platform to make more of us aware of it and hopefully more people who are like me that it doesn’t affect on a day to day basis, to realise there’s a lot of people out there that it does and we can help them in a small way. My learnings are how much it affects some of my teammates and me being unaware of that for probably 15 years as a professional cricketer. So just the shift in that now.”Cummins spoke of how he had recently read the seminal Bruce Pascoe book , which has helped raise fresh perspectives on the intricacies of Aboriginal Australia in the years before European settlement of the continent.”The biggest shift I have had in the past year or so is just around our Indigenous culture here in Australia,” Cummins said. “Obviously at school you learn a little bit about it, I remember reading about the Stolen Generation, small parts; the boomerang, the didgeridoo, dream time, but never really in depth. It was always ‘that’s the past’, that’s what that culture was, not that it still exists.”But the biggest shift for me was . It’s a great book that came out a few years ago and it talks about how productive, how intelligent and how incredible the culture was at not only surviving, but thriving. How closely they were intertwined with the land. It kind of shifted my perspective. I guess I had just thought a lot of Indigenous people were foragers and just surviving off the land, but I found out they would burn certain fires to make sure the bush survived, they would look after certain flora and fauna.”They had this whole eco system that was so finely tuned over 60,000 years. It shifted my perspective to wow these cultures are absolute experts on this land we live in, and we don’t really tap into it nowadays. Just huge admiration and respect for the history. Australia has all this history I didn’t even know about a year ago and I feel real proud to be an Aussie.”Paine added that in his experience, the calling out of racist language needed to be done in a way that would reduce, wherever possible, the amount of hurt felt by the victim. “I’ve heard a few throwaway lines in the gym or at training over the years. The simple thing is to call it out,” Paine said. “For me it is just going over to them, rather than making a big scene over it, which can make the situation worse for the person that’s had the comment made to.”A couple of times it’s been literally going over to a teammate one-on-one. The ones I have been around haven’t meant to insult the person, it’s been a throwaway line, someone thinking they have been funny because it is something that’s been in sports change rooms for a long, long time.”Tap them on the shoulder and let them know the comment has probably been hurtful and harmful to the person it was aimed at. A quiet conversation and make them aware it is not on and make sure they speak to the person it was aimed at.”

They were found to be party to attempted match-fixing during the 2019 T20 World Cup qualifier

The ICC has found UAE players Mohammad Naveed and Shaiman Anwar guilty of offences relating to attempted match-fixing during the 2019 T20 World Cup qualifying tournament. The verdict follows a hearing by an independent anti-corruption tribunal, with the ICC saying in a statement that “the pair remain suspended and sanctions will follow in due course”.The two are among UAE’s most experienced international cricketers. Anwar, now 41, is their highest run-getter across the ODI and T20I formats, and 33-year-old Naveed their most prolific wicket-taker and a former captain.Related

Naveed and Anwar were charged under the ICC anti-corruption code in October 2019, and suspended days before the start of the qualifiers in the UAE. Naveed, who was UAE’s captain at the time, was stood down from the post. The two have both been found guilty of the following breaches of the anti-corruption code: Article 2.1.1 – for being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect(s) of a match or matches at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019. Article 2.4.4 – failing to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019.Naveed, in addition, was also found guilty of breaching the same two codes during the T10 League in 2019, which was also held in the UAE.ESPNcricinfo understands the two players had allegedly stood to make around US$ 272,000 if they had been successful in impacting the outcome of matches during the qualifiers. In October 2019, Naveed accepted that he had failed to report a suspicious approach during the T10 tournament, but claimed he had ended the conversation when he realised the person he was meeting was a “fixer”.

Liverpool hit the jackpot with Klopp signing who’s worth more than Yoro

Last season, Liverpool fell apart at the final stretch. A slump in form after enduring the bite of the winter months saw conquests for the FA Cup and Europa League severed by eventual winners Manchester United and Atalanta, with Premier League title aspirations torn to tatters after several inexplicable losses.

Jurgen Klopp's fairytale ending wasn't to be, even if the Carabao Cup was clinched against the odds in February. The German's decision to leave Liverpool heightened expectations, of that there is no doubt, but supporters are eager to see the squad reinforced after demonstrating exceptional qualities last season, if falling a bit short.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp bows out

Perhaps it's because Liverpool fell slightly short that there is a hunger for new signings. Defensively, the Reds lacked steel at points; in midfield, a first-class No. 6 could have been the difference-maker; up front, for all the Anfield side's creativity and attacking verve, a lack of incisiveness formed the crux of the late-season stutter.

Arne Slot is working toward rebuilding the outfit as a force to be reckoned with, and while FSG's silence in the transfer market this summer has been… disappointing, the squad is replete with quality and could raise its level with fresh life at the helm.

Liverpool players celebrate

There are certainly several players who will be expected to lift themselves up a notch, with Dominik Szoboszlai's second season on Merseyside likely to be one of the most interesting plot points of the early months.

Why Liverpool signed Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool signed Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig in July 2023 after meeting his £60m release clause. The Hungary international had been hailed as a "generational talent" by journalist Marcel Moeller for his performances in Germany, with optimal athletic performance wrapped around technical distinction and high-quality endurance levels.

He basically embodied the traits that Klopp called for in a midfielder, though with the German manager fashioning him into a deeper-lying, more industrious midfield role than he was accustomed to at Leipzig, Szoboszlai flattered to deceive toward the end of the term.

Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool

Still, Liverpool's wretched 2022/23 season demanded a midfield rebuild, and so Klopp made sweeping changes to the engine room, replacing a beleaguered lot with Alexis Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and the like.

And while he left plenty to be desired last season, the 23-year-old hardly flopped. As per FBref, he ranked among the top 17% of central midfielders in the Premier League last year for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 4% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Furthermore, the 6 foot 1 star averaged 7.3 ball recoveries per game (Sofascore), highlighting his noteworthy energy levels. That said, it's hard to argue against his regression in performance when comparing his final year in Germany to his first on Merseyside.

He has one of the meatiest strikes in the business, adding a wonderful dimension to his team. This was evidenced on several occasions, and while he won't be delighted with his tally of seven goals and four assists from 45 appearances (30 starts) throughout his debut campaign, he has rooted his talent deep in Anfield's soil and will be set on reaching the next level under Slot's tutelage.

More is required this season though. Benched for five of the final six Premier League matches under Klopp, Liverpool's record midfield signing fell by the wayside at the end, losing his initial look as a domineering new midfield talisman and fizzling out after injuries and second-half-of-season struggles got the better of him.

It's nothing to worry about too greatly. The talent is permanent and Szoboszlai's off-the-ball numbers – i.e. his ball recoveries – speak of his tenacity and resolve, but something slipped nonetheless.

Dominik Szoboszlai is dejected for Liverpool

With the club's new head coach often employing a 4-2-3-1 formation at Feyenoord, the talented midfielder could see his technical qualities maximised. It could almost feel like a new signing.

Dominik Szoboszlai's market value in 2024

Despite a maiden campaign in England that ebbed and flowed, Szoboszlai is still regarded as one of the most lucrative members of Slot's Liverpool squad.

According to CIES Football Observatory's player valuation model, Szoboszlai's market price stands at an unabashed £90m, which actually marks a 50% increase after just one year. Imagine what might happen when he enters the ascendancy next year.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

That's a staggering figure for one so young, so soon into their professional career. To put it in perspective, CIES' valuation of the Hungarian towers is some £40m above what Manchester United are paying LOSC Lille for Leny Yoro.

Yoro, another to be considered a 'generational talent' – as relayed by The Telegraph – was courted by Liverpool this summer before FSG withdrew from consideration after resigning themselves to the 18-year-old defender's wish to join Real Madrid.

That didn't happen, and now the prodigious French starlet is heading to Old Trafford to sign a deal in excess of £50m. Sure, Szoboszlai has five years on the young gun but it's a testament to his lofty ability that he is valued so much higher.

Perhaps it's also a measure of how highly regarded the £120k-per-week star was when FSG sanctioned the £60m outlay one year ago – similar to that of the Red Devils' prospective new signing.

There's an optimistic sense that Liverpool that Szoboszlai has not tapped into his potential by half yet. Based on the evidence so far, that only means that he's headed straight for the very top of the European game.

He's a cheat code: Liverpool could sign dream Trent replacement for £34m

The Reds star has been linked with a move away from the club this summer.
