Sunil Narine the opener in focus as Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad look for first points

Sunrisers have Kane Williamson and Mohammad Nabi to choose from as Mitchell Marsh’s replacement

Shashank Kishore25-Sep-20209:10

Will Sunrisers Hyderabad give Mohammad Nabi a go?

Big picture
Sunil Narine’s batting in the powerplay threw opponents off gear for quite a while after the Kolkata Knight Riders first adopted the strategy in 2017. However, that experiment may be on its last legs if the short ball continues to trouble Narine. The numbers don’t paint a pretty picture for him: 76 balls, 13 dismissals, an average of 7.53. Till 2018, he struck his runs at 175. Since last year, his strike rate has come down drastically to 126.In the Knight Riders’ tournament opener, James Pattinson dismissed Narine with a short ball. Sunrisers Hyderabad don’t have a genuine quick – they are full of swing bowlers, but it’s a prospect that should excite them. So does Narine still hold his place as a bowler? Most definitely: 4-0-22-1 in a game where Mumbai Indians made 195 says so. His action may have been remodelled, the bite isn’t quite the same as earlier, but there are enough tricks in his bag still. And who opens then if he drops down the order? The Knight Riders played Nikhil Naik in the first game, but the experiment didn’t work. Dropping him after one outing could be a tad unfair. Maybe there’s a case for them to give him another chance, and the freedom to play his way. In domestic cricket, Naik has the reputation of being quite a hitter even though his strike rate is only 115. There is also another option in Rahul Tripathi. It’s unlikely the team will tamper too much with the rest of the XI.As for the Sunrisers, they didn’t do much wrong for most parts of their opening game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. At no stage did they allow Virat Kohli’s side to break free while batting and they waltzed their way through the new ball courtesy Jonny Bairstow and Manish Pandey. However, the middle order, entirely Indian on the day, failed to see off the game. Young Priyam Garg and Vijay Shankar, the allrounder, had a platform to close out the game but they faltered. They must be hurting, and would be eager to correct that.In the news
Mitchell Marsh is out of the tournament and Jason Holder is on his way to the UAE. Sunrisers will need to make a forced change, and there could be a chance for Mohammad Nabi, who can give them four overs on a good day and two or three on a bad day. With the bat, he’s as calm as they come and should bolster an inexperienced middle order. Of course, it could be a tricky call to make if Kane Williamson has fully recovered from his quad injury. The Knight Riders don’t have any injury concerns, having already signed Ali Khan up for Harry Gurney. Everyone is fit and available to play.Mitchell Marsh’s IPL 2020 ended after just one aborted outing•BCCI

Likely XIs
Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Dinesh Karthik (capt, wk), 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Nikhil Naik/Rahul Tripathi, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Shivam Mavi, 11 Sandeep WarrierSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 2 David Warner (capt), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Priyam Garg, 5 Kane Williamson/Mohammad Nabi, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Abhishek Sharma, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 T Natarajan/Khaleel AhmedStrategy punt Rashid Khan bowls at least two overs at the death. In the first game, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers chose to play him out before looking to attack. If the Knight Riders decide to promote Andre Russell in the order, the Sunrisers could consider bringing Khan on immediately. He has dismissed Russell thrice in 25 deliveries in the IPL over the years. However, it must also be noted that Russell strikes at 184 against him. So it could come down to a mini battle. Will Russell look to play him out? Will he decide to take him on? David Warner has been dismissed by express fast bowlers with the rising ball of late. This is because he has been rushed. He was dismissed on Australia’s tour of England four times by Jofra Archer. The Knight Riders opened with Sandeep Warrier in the first game, and that brings accuracy in the 135kph range. Maybe there’s a case for them to give the new ball to Pat Cummins along with Shivam Mavi to exploit this minor weakness that may have crept into Warner’s game.Stats that matter Warner made 152 runs, including two half-centuries, at a strike rate of 167.03 in his last two knocks against the Knight Riders. The Knight Riders are the only team to have scored at over 11 an over at the death since the start of IPL 2019. In comparison, the Sunrisers are the slowest scoring unit at 9.4 during the same period. The Sunrisers are the only opponents against whom Russell has a modest record. He averages less than 15. Kuldeep Yadav was taking a wicket every 18 balls until 2018. Since the last IPL, he’s managed just four wickets in ten innings, averaging a wicket every 55 balls – modest for a team’s strike bowler.

Everton already lining up Dyche’s next priority signing after Iroegbunam

After reportedly completing a deal to sign Aston Villa prospect Tim Iroegbunam, Everton have turned their attention to landing Sean Dyche's next priority signing, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Everton transfer news

Despite being stuck at a takeover crossroads, Everton have still managed to splash the cash in a reported £9m deal to sign Iroegbunam this summer. The 20-year-old broke into Unai Emery's Aston Villa side on more than one occasion last season, making 15 first-team appearances in total, but is now set to swap Villa Park for Goodison Park.

Sky journalist says Everton have sent a formal bid for a "very fine player"

He has attracted interest from elsewhere in England.

ByTom Coates Jun 19, 2024

The £9m deal should help Villa in their attempts to avoid a profit and sustainability charge from the Premier League, whilst handing Everton a player who's got plenty more to come. Should the midfielder reach his potential, then it could be argued that Dyche will have a natural replacement for Amadou Onana if the Belgian does part ways with the Toffees this summer.

With that deal now reportedly completed and money spent, however, Everton have reportedly turned their attention back towards bargain deals and one particular familiar face in the summer transfer window. According to Romano, Everton are lining up a deal to sign Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds United for a second consecutive season.

Reportedly one of Dyche's priorities since the conclusion of the Premier League season, Harrison showed glimpses of his quality when fit and firing at Goodison Park last season and could now maintain his top-flight place with another move. What's more, Leeds' promotion failure should make any deal easier for Everton to complete this summer.

The Toffees may still be searching for new owners, but that doesn't seem to be standing in the way of arrivals, be that Iroegbunam or Harrison up next, as Dyche prepares to finally take his side away from relegation battles in the Premier League.

"Excellent" Harrison would be wise business by Everton

A player with Premier League experience who could arrive in a loan deal to avoid any transfer fee, Harrison makes perfect sense for Everton. The winger saw the start of his loan spell interrupted by a hip injury last season, before he went on to score three goals and assist a further three in a mixed Premier League spell. If Everton can get the Leeds man back to his best, however, then they'll have plenty more to come.

As Leeds suffered relegation in the 2022/23 season, for example, Harrison managed five goals and seven assists in the Premier League, proving to be a bright spark in a campaign to forget at Elland Road. Now, with Dyche looking to take the Toffees into the comforts of mid-table, the 27-year-old could play a crucial part.

Dyche certainly didn't shy away from praising Harrison last season, either, telling EvertonTV: “People like Jack came into the side. He’s been absolutely terrific. He’s hardly played but he looks clear and he said he felt clear and I thought he was excellent tonight to come in and work as he did.”

Numa bolinha podíamos decidir a partida.

Williamson, Holder see through wobbly Sunrisers chase to knock out Royal Challengers

They absorbed all the pressure from the spinners and finished off the game in calculated manner

Sidharth Monga06-Nov-20202:33

Gautam Gambhir: RCB didn’t deserve to qualify for the playoffs

Two Test captains saw a jittery Sunrisers Hyderabad chase of 132 through, and their shirts and hair had sweat to show for it. Brought into the side after they failed to chase 127 against the Kings XI Punjab, Kane Williamson and Jason Holder absorbed all the pressure from the spinners on a turning pitch, saw the asking rate of eight when they came together nudge 10, but finished off the game in calculated manner with two balls to go. This was the Sunrisers’ fourth straight win in a must-win game, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s fifth straight loss after an excellent start to their season. The Sunrisers set up a virtual semi-final with the Delhi Capitals for the right to play the Mumbai Indians in the final.Having recovered successfully from the injuries during the season to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mitchell Marsh and Vijay Shankar, the Sunrisers were now missing the man significantly responsible for their comeback, Wriddhiman Saha. The Royal Challengers had to contend with their talisman Chris Morris’ absence, out with a quad injury. They made wholesale changes, punting on two legspinners and also getting Moeen Ali and Aaron Finch in.On a pitch that offered both seam and spin, the bowlers from both sides were on top of their games. Eventually, only AB de Villiers and Williamson rose above the conditions, and they had to score their runs without taking risks because they didn’t have batting cover behind them.If Sandeep doesn’t get you, Jason willSandeep Sharma came into the match with nine wickets in the powerplay this IPL, and Jason Holder none. Opening for the first time this IPL – perhaps he wanted to try it sooner but his side couldn’t seal the playoff spot befire their last match – Virat Kohli was watchful in the first over, keen not to fall to Sharma an eighth time. Holder, though, got a glove from him down the leg side with his extra bounce. He then cramped up Devdutt Padikkal on the pull, making it a third Padikkal dismissal to a short ball this IPL. Padikkal has scored just 46 off 50 such balls.AB plays himself in, others play themselves outIn as early as the fourth over, de Villiers had no choice but to eschew any risk. He would go 20 balls before hitting his first boundary and reaching a run a ball. It was imperative that Finch take the pressure off, but life at the pitch was a struggle for him. He struggled to adjust to the pace of the surface, and was stifled by the accuracy of the Sunrisers bowlers. The first 10 overs featured just four boundaries, the joint-fewest in the tournament, all off the bat of Finch.Just as he looked like he might be turning a corner with a big six off Rashid Khan, Finch holed out to deep cover with Shahbaz Nadeem defeating him with a wide one as he backed away early. Ali walked out with a red carpet of a free hit rolled out for him, but he patted it to extra cover and ran himself out thanks to a Khan direct hit. The Royal Challengers were 62 for 4 in 10.4 overs.AB masterclass loomsBetween the Sunrisers and a facile chase stood the genius of de Villiers. Having scored 20 off 22 so far, with one edged boundary, de Villiers was just entering the genius phase of the innings. Without taking risks – he couldn’t afford to – de Villiers still managed to score 36 off the next 21 balls he faced. However, the Sunrisers were excellent against the others – Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar – bowling 19 balls to them without a boundary. The Royal Challengers were 111 for 5 in 17 overs.AB de Villiers – feeling the weight of single-handedly carrying RCB?•BCCI

The Natarajan masterclassThere was still time for de Villiers to do damage. Teams know he can still win matches even from here, especially when he is 40-plus balls into an innings. T Natarajan then had an unenviable task to bowl overs 18 and 20. He has had an unenviable task all season, bowling the really difficult overs for his side. He came into the playoffs with 14 wickets to his name, 10 in the death overs. In the 18th he made it 12. Sundar was regulation, timing a chip too well and getting caught at deep cover. The next one was one for the ages. A cross-seam yorker, dipping and beating the master and ripping the middle stump out of the ground. This just brought the total crashing down with just 20 runs coming off the last three.Warner is sent offMohammed Siraj removed Saha’s replacement, Shreevats Goswami, in the first over, but David Warner and Manish Pandey staged a recovery after playing themselves in against the seaming ball. Pandey broke free first, and in the final powerplay over, Warner, too, cut Siraj for two boundaries. Then he survived an appeal for caught behind. Or so he thought. The Royal Challengers took the matter upstairs. Replays showed this delivery pass the bat and pad at the same time, and there was a spike on UltraEdge. In a decision bound to cause controversy, the third umpire felt it was conclusive enough for him to overturn the on-field call. The Sunrisers 43 for 2 in 5.4 overs. The spin choke is onThat Warner wicket was huge not only because of Sunrisers’ middle-overs troubles, but because of the Royal Challengers’ attack composition. Warner feasts on legspin: he averages 61 and goes at 9.1 an over against legspin. Now they could unleash both their legspinners at right-hand batsmen. Pandey soon fell to the pressure created. Fourteen bowls of legspin for seven runs later, he played an ambitious late-cut and toe-ended to de Villiers. Priyam Garg faced 14 balls of legspin for seven runs himself. Then tried to drive over cover but holed out to the boundary rider. Six overs, 20 runs, two wickets.Test captains come togetherWith 64 required off the last eight overs, came together Williamson and Holder, two of the calmest players in international cricket, two players used to carrying their sides with them. They kept picking the singles, not worrying about the rising asking rate. Kohli had to eventually take the legspinners off. With 59 required off 38, Williamson tried to hit his first boundary, slog-sweeping Sundar as he overpitched. That took him to 19 off 25.Back came the legspinners. Back came the boundary drought. Back it went to 41 off 25. Out came the slog sweep again as Chahal overpitched this time. Williamson reached a run-a-ball 32 with this. Now Kohli had to go to pace. The dew began to play its part too. Navdeep Saini and Siraj took the high-risk route of bowling yorkers with both third man and fine leg up. While it provided them cover down the ground, a deft batsman such as Williamson kept finding the boundaries and twos behind square to never let the asking rate go past nine. And Holder then killed it off with two fours in the last over. The 65-run partnership comprised just two sixes and five fours.

Bad news for Yang: Celtic keen on signing ‘impressive’ replacement

Celtic now have under two months left to do business before the end of the summer transfer window after the calendar ticked over to July on Monday.

The Hoops are yet to make a senior addition to their squad since the window opened a few weeks ago but work is seemingly going on behind the scenes to get deals done.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to bolster his options across the pitch ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and has been linked with interest in a number of players.

Last season's loanee Adam Idah and Motherwell centre-forward Theo Bair have both been touted as possible signings for the Scottish giants, whilst they also reportedly have a long-term interest in Brondby star Mathias Kvistgaarden.

The Bhoys are also in the market to land a new number one after Joe Hart retired at the end of last season, with Newcastle United's Martin Dubravka and Croatia star Dominik Livakovic two of the names reportedly on their list of targets to protect the net at Parkhead next season.

Along with stars who could immediately step in as key operators for Rodgers from matchday one, Celtic are also looking at young talents who could come in as long-term projects.

Celtic's interest in young sensation

According to the Scottish Sun, the Hoops are interested in 'impressive' Herediano winger Andy Rojas this summer, who is currently at the Copa America with his country.

The report claims that the Scottish Premiership champions are keeping tabs on his performances as he competes at the tournament with Costa Rica.

It states that the Bhoys are one of a number of teams in Europe 'eyeing' up a potential swoop to sign him from the South American side ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Scottish Sun adds that Rodgers would like to bring in some experience to bolster his side but the club also want to ensure that they have young talent with potential to improve.

Football Scotland have followed that up with a report that claims that the Hoops will be able to sign the 18-year-old talent for a bargain fee of $1m (£800k) this summer.

The outlet backs up that the Scottish giants are keen on a deal for the teenage sensation but adds that teams from the MLS and Mexico are also looking at him.

This suggests that there could be plenty of competition to secure his signature over the coming months, particularly for a bargain fee of around £800k.

Celtic's interest in Rojas, and potential capture of the young whiz, could be bad news for a current member of the first-team squad, who the club may now wave bye-bye to this summer.

Why Celtic may wave bye-bye to Hyun-jun Yang

A new young winger coming through the door over the coming weeks could mean that Hyun-jun Yang is pushed further towards the exit door.

Football Insider recently named the South Korean youngster as one of three players – alongside Yuki Kobayashi and Hyeon-gyu Oh – who could move on from Parkhead this summer.

Celtic winger Hyun-jun Yang.

The report claimed that all three players 'struggled' to make an impact on the pitch for the Scottish side during the 2023/24 campaign, and could be allowed to depart ahead of next term.

However, it was stated that Yang could be sent out on loan rather than a permanent departure, although the latter option was not ruled out by Football Insider.

The South Korea international did not do enough last season to suggest that he is ready to be a key player for the Hoops and Rojas could come in to take his place as their long-term wing project.

As you can see in the table above, Yang racked up as many red cards as goals in the Premiership last term, thanks to his sending off for a high foot against Hearts.

The 22-year-old dud also failed to produce a single goal or assist in seven appearances in cup competitions domestically and in Europe throughout the rest of the campaign.

His struggles on the pitch in his first season at Parkhead could now see him moved on before the end of the window to make room for the signing of Rojas.

Why Celtic should sign Andy Rojas

The Hoops should swoop to sign the 5 foot 11 left winger as he is a promising talent who could come in and offer more as a long-term project for Rodgers.

At the age of 18, the £800k-rated starlet is four years younger than Yang and this means that he has far more time ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come.

This is why he could be a better option for the Bhoys to use as a squad player next season, as the Herediano ace could gain valuable experience in Scotland as a bit-part forward initially.

The Costa Rica international's club form during the 2024 campaign also suggests that the potential is there for him to immediately provide more on the pitch for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, Rojas was let down by his teammates in the Champions Cup as they failed to take advantage of his sublime creativity, whilst Yang only made 0.9 key passes per game in the Premiership.

The 18-year-old whiz also racked up five goals and three assists in 20 appearances in the Primera Division Clausura this year, which shows that the talented teen can also provide a goal threat from the flank.

Rojas, who can play on either flank or through the middle as a striker, could offer more as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a left wing position in comparison to Yang, based on their respective form in front of goal last season and this year.

This suggests that the £800k fee touted would be a bargain deal for the Bhoys, given that they reportedly paid £2m to sign the South Korean flop from Gangwon last summer.

Rodgers could land "exciting" Kyogo heir in Celtic move for £8.5m star

The Scottish giants are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the impressive youngster.

ByDan Emery Jul 1, 2024

Therefore, Celtic could wave bye-bye to the South Korean dud, who has been touted with a possible exit, if they sign the Costa Rice starlet, as he could come in as a bigger prospect and more attractive long-term project for Rodgers to work on over the years to come.

Palace can repeat Wharton masterclass by signing £20m "wonderkid"

It's been a roller coaster five months or so for the Crystal Palace faithful following the appointment of Oliver Glasner last season.

The Austrian has thoroughly altered the club's direction and turned them into one of the most attractive projects in the Premier League, and while they're set to lose stars like Michael Olise this summer, you can be sure they'll replace them.

In fact, the latest star touted for a move to Selhurst Park could see Steve Parish and Co repeat the masterclass trick that saw them recruit Adam Wharton in the winter.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Palace are incredibly interested in signing Sunderland's exciting prospect Jobe Bellingham this summer.

The Italian claims that the young Englishman is one of Glasner's dream signings and that they are just waiting for the player's green light before making an offer to the Black Cats.

However, it won't be a cheap deal to complete for the Eagles, as Ed Aarrons from the Guardian claimed earlier this week that the Championship side are holding out for offers in excess of £20m.

It would represent a significant investment in a somewhat unproven youngster by the club, but considering the last time they did that, they picked up Wharton, it might be worth the risk.

Palace could repeat their Wharton trick

If there is any trepidation from the board or fans about paying such a substantial fee for a young English midfielder from the Championship, then they only need to cast their minds back to the winter window when they paid £22m to sign Wharton from Blackburn Rovers who had just 51 senior appearances under his belt.

Since then, the 20-year-old has played 16 games for the South Londoners, racked up three assists, made his England debut and is now in Germany as a member of Gareth Southgate's Euros squad – even if he isn't getting as much game time as he should.

It would be hard to describe the transfer as anything other than an overwhelming success, and while it would be wholly unfair to expect Bellingham to quite match that trajectory, his performances in the second tier are undoubtedly promising.

In 45 Championship matches last season, the Stourbridge "wonderkid", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored seven goals and provided one assist, which is genuinely impressive for an 18-year-old midfielder in his first full campaign of senior football.

Moreover, FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions, has placed the young dynamo in the top 5% of midfielders for non-penalty expected goals, the top 22% for actual non-penalty goals and touches in the opposition's penalty area, the top 12% for progressive passes received and the top 14% for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, all per 90.

Ultimately, signing unproven youngsters from the Championship will always be a risk, but based on Bellingham's performances last season, it looks like one worth taking for Palace, especially if they end up with another Wharton situation.
