The opening ceremony was a spectacular affair, but what followed was even more breathtaking, as Brendon McCullum destroyed the home team in the inaugural match of the IPL. In what was a brutal one-man assault on Bangalore Royal Challengers, McCullum blasted an unbeaten 158 from a mere 73 deliveries, the highest score in a Twenty20 match, to propel Kolkata Knight Riders to an imposing 222 for 3. The punch-drunk Royal Challengers were in no condition to fight back after that battering, and collapsed limply to 82 to lose by an embarrassing margin of 140 runs, the fourth-largest defeat in this sort of match.Chris Gayle was expected to be the aggressive opener for Kolkata, but McCullum’s stunning knock ensured Gayle’s absence wasn’t felt at all. In an innings which was reminiscent of Gayle’s blistering knock in the World Twenty20 opener – he had scored 117 from 57 – McCullum gave the Royal Challengers attack no chance. Pace and spin were both treated with equal contempt, and the crowd was treated to an innings of rare explosiveness.The start, though, was deceptive. Six balls into his innings, McCullum didn’t have a single run as Praveen Kumar bowled an excellent first over. Four deliveries later, McCullum had blazed to 18, flicking and pulling Zaheer Khan for four, and then miscuing a flick which, quite incredibly, soared over third man for the first six.Zaheer was quickly pulled out of the attack, but his replacement, Ashley Noffke, fared even worse. His first ball was so wayward that neither McCullum nor Mark Boucher, the wicketkeeper, had a chance of getting to it. When the ball landed within McCullum’s reach, the result was even more devastating: a pulled six over square leg and another over extra cover. Twenty-three in the over, and Noffke out of the attack as well.McCullum allowed himself a breather after that, going 17 deliveries without a boundary, before the floodgates opened again. Sunil Joshi was slog-swept twice – with the bottom hand coming off the bat once – for sixes, before he turned his attention to Cameron White and Jacques Kallis. Line, length, and pace mattered not a jot, as balls disappeared over the ground with ridiculous frequency. When Zaheer returned for another spell, McCullum manufactured the stroke of the evening, going down on one knee and scooping the ball over fine leg for six.Praveen, who bowled superbly in his first three overs, had escaped the McCullum onslaught for most of the evening, but he too suffered in the last over of the innings, as the first two balls vanished over midwicket, before McCullum put the final seal on his innings, depositing the last ball of the innings over long-on. That brought his sixes’ tally to 13, the most in a Twenty20 innings.Shahrukh Khan, the owner of the franchise, had danced through the McCullum innings, and he had even more reason to celebrate as his bowlers then got into the act with equal gusto. Rahul Dravid, under immense pressure facing an asking-rate of more than 11, lasted three balls, losing his middle stump while attempting a heave. The loss of the captain started the slide, and it went downhill quickly thereafter.Kallis mounted the briefest of challenges, lofting Ajit Agarkar over extra cover for a huge six, but fell next ball, pulling tamely to mid-on. The pitch offered some pace and bounce, and Ishant Sharma, especially, exploited it, getting the ball to zip at a fair pace. Agarkar also prised out White, who had held the record for the highest Twenty20 score till a few minutes before. Royal Challengers’ only chance was if he produced a similar stunner, but by the time he nicked one off Agarkar the contest was already over. The end came soon after, when Joshi fell to a miscued pull with 29 deliveries still left in the innings.The match may have been over long before the last ball was bowled, but McCullum’s stunner has given the IPL, and Kolkata, a dream start. With Ganguly’s team playing their next match at the Eden Gardens, this result should ensure that Sunday’s clash against the Deccan Chargers draws a full house, and more. The IPL extravaganza has well and truly begun.

Southampton will be pleased that they're entering into the luck-of-the-draw of the playoffs off the back of a victory at Elland Road, getting the better of a nervous Leeds United side 2-1 to stop their poor run of form from getting out of hand.

Before this victory in West Yorkshire, Russell Martin's Saints had lost their last three second-tier games on the spin which included a humbling 5-0 loss to Championship title-winners Leicester City on the road.

Kyle Walker-Peters stood out in the contest against Daniel Farke's Whites by assisting Will Smallbone's winner, a crucial player for Martin throughout the season as a whole too who even has had admirers from the Premier League watching on.

Juan Larios' transfer to Southampton

Joining for a bumper £6m two years ago, which would have undoubtedly raised a few eyebrows with zero senior appearances under his belt anywhere, Juan Larios was expected to be a similar star like Gavin Bazunu when entering the South Coasts ranks from the Manchester City academy.

However, the big move to the Saints for the Spaniard has, arguably, been too much too soon, as he is now a forgotten background figure at St. Mary's after suffering wretched luck with injuries.

Videoed back in training this March on social media, Larios has been out of action for the Saints since pulling up with an injury at home to Newcastle United in October of 2022 and will want to make up for lost time when fully back up to fitness.

In total, the unlucky left-back has only made five appearances across two full seasons with Southampton cursing their luck now that they dropped £6m without even flinching to get him into the building from the Etihad in the first place.

Larios' worth has fallen off a cliff as a result of his constant presence in the St. Mary's treatment room, with the promising youngster now worth less than Ryan Manning who has struggled at points this season as a first-teamer under Martin.

Larios' transfer value in 2024

Formerly on the books at Barcelona as an up-and-coming starlet before moving to England, Larios will be disappointed that his valuation, according to Football Transfers, now stands at a lesser £1.1m.

Manning's worth is superior to the injury-prone Spaniard's now, coming in at a hefty £4.2m after joining Martin's men on a free transfer just last year after he let his contract at Swansea City run down.

Still, even with the Saints number three's worth being high compared to Larios' falling value, Martin will want to upgrade on Manning if his team leap back up to the top flight at the end of the playoffs owing to his shaky displays throughout the campaign.

The Irishman, away in the 5-0 defeat to the Foxes, had a shocker from a 30-minute cameo off the bench with Enzo Maresca's men scoring four of their five goals on the night after the poor 27-year-old was introduced.

It will be intriguing to see if Martin does bolster this spot if Southampton clinch promotion at Wembley at the end of the month, knowing that he cannot rely on Larios to be adequate backup to Manning whilst the ex-Man City youngster remains troubled by injuries.

وأكمل: “لا يصح أن يكون هناك 2 محترفين كل مباراة على الدكة، طالما كولر غير مقتنع بهم لا بد أن يرحلوا، أتحدث عن بيرسي تاو ورضا سليم، لا بد أن يستفيد الأهلي من الـ 5 محترفين الذين يتعاقد معهم، لأن صعب تدفع رواتب كبيرة بالدولار ولا يلعبون”.

واستكمل: “كلام كولر عن وسام أبو علي حقيقي، لأننا رأينا مع وسام ما يُعاني منه الأهلي منذ زمن، من وقت اعتزال عماد متعب، محمد شريف كان يجتهد لكن ليس بنفس ما يفعله وسام”.

وأوضح: “وسام حل مشكلة يعاني منها الأهلي منذ اعتزال متعب، لاعب متكامل يعتمد عليه الفريق، وهذا ما بنيت عليه كلامي عن مشكلة البدلاء، الأهلي وصل لمرحلة أنه لا يجب أن يعتمد على لاعب واحد فقط دون بديل، البدلاء بعيدون جدًا، ومنطقي كولر يحرج إدارة النادي والتعاقدات، وأنا معه بالتأكيد”.

وواصل: “المفترض أن يكون هناك توضيح بشأن مدة غياب وتشخيص إصابة أبو علي، من منطلق الشفافية في النادي الأهلي”.

وأتم: “أعتقد أن مشاركة أفشة على حساب إمام قرصة ودن لأنه الفترة الأخيرة بيدلع شوية، وأعتقد أن المباراة في المتناول، وكولر معندوش مشكلة في قرص ودن بعض اللاعبين شوية، خاصة إمام إللي الناس بتشوفه بيدلع، مش عايز أقول استهتار، لكن في أوقات اللاعب بيحتاج إنك تقعده على الدكة”.

Arsenal once again fell short in 2023/24, losing out on the Premier League trophy to Manchester City, who secured a fourth title in a row under Pep Guardiola. Elsewhere, according to a recent interview with Italian journalist Valter De Maggio on Radio Global (via Kiss Kiss Napoli), Napoli's superstar striker Victor Osimhen "wants the Premier League", although he is said to be "waiting for Arsenal" in particular. The Gunners are also being linked with a couple more strikers in Italy, as while Arsenal are making their appreciation and interest in Marcus Thuram clear to Inter, they "would like to take" Lautaro Martinez.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have joined the race to sign 18-year-old Rennes midfielder Desire Doue, who is also an attractive option in the market for Manchester United.

Brother Inaki Williams is a big admirer of his family member and Bilbao teammate, saying after his Spain debut that he "is a great player, he is in incredible shape and I think he can give a lot to Spain."

And at just over £40m, Williams would only just squeeze into Arsenal's top 10 most expensive signings, in what could be a rare summer bargain.

Chris Green, the offspinning allrounder from Australia, has been withdrawn from the Birmingham Bears squad for this year’s T20 Blast due to the coronavirus pandemic, further reducing overseas participation in the competition. Green was set to captain the Bears, but in his absence, Will Rhodes, already captain of Warwickshire County Club’s first-class and List-A teams, will take up the mantle.Green, the most economical T20 bowler between December 2018 and December 2019, was roped in by the Bears as a last-minute injury replacement for Australia allrounder Ashton Agar last season, taking five wickets at 6.69 in his six appearances. Late last year year, he earned a maiden IPL contract after Kolkata Knight Riders snapped him up for INR 20 lakh (US$28,000), only for the tournament to be indefinitely postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.More recently, Green was retained by Guyana Amazon Warriors in this year’s CPL draft that was held virtually on June 24, with the tournament set to begin on August 18, and finish on September 26. Anil Kumble, the former India captain, doesn’t regret walking away as the team’s head coach in 2017, but feels “the end could have been better”. He stepped down immediately after the Champions Trophy in June, where India finished runners-up to Pakistan, after his partnership with captain Virat Kohli became “untenable.”Ahead of that tournament, reports of Kohli telling BCCI about players being uncomfortable with Kumble’s “overbearing” ways surfaced. “The one year I spent with the Indian team (2016 to 2017) was fantastic,” Kumble said in an Instagram Live with former Zimbabwe medium-pacer Mpumelelo Mbangwa. “We did really well in that one-year period.”During his term from June 2016 to 2017, India rose to become the No. 1-ranked Test team, beating West Indies (away), Bangladesh, New Zealand, England and Australia (all at home). In all, India won 12 and lost just one Test during his 17-match run as India coach.”I was really happy that there were some contributions made and there are no regrets. I was happy moving on from there as well. I know the end could have been better but then that’s fine. As a coach, you realise when it’s time to move on; it’s the coach who needs to move on. I was really happy I played a significant role in that one year.”Kumble currently chairs the ICC Cricket Committee, with still a year to go in his nine-year term.
