In the very first game of the season, versus Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester United looked vulnerable and unconvincing.
Unfortunately for Erik ten Hag, that has continued to be the case all season, with only an FA Cup and an unlikely top four spot somewhat salvaging the campaign.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after a Premier League game.
In fairness to the former Ajax boss, injuries have hit his squad hard, especially in the defensive department, with only Diogo Dalot evading the crisis.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at who Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking to sign this summer in order to bolster the backline.
Man Utd's search for a centre-back is underway
According to a report from Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Man Utd are looking to sign a centre-back, with Gleison Bremer at the top of their list.
The story mentions that the Red Devils' new ownership group led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe have already made contact with the Brazilian defender, who currently commands the Juventus defence.
The former Torino ace is known to have a €58m (£50m) release clause in his contract, and Ratcliffe will have no issues meeting that figure.
Therefore, a move this summer seems likely, especially with the latest news of another setback to a United defender.
Man Utd struck gold by selling academy grad who's worth less than Maguire
The former Man United ace has struggled in the Premier League this season.
ByTom Lever Mar 25, 2024 Why Bremer would be the perfect replacement for Harry Maguire
There’s no doubt about it: when on the field, Harry Maguire’s performances have massively improved, with the fact that he won the November Premier League Player of the Month award supporting that.
However, the 31-year-old has had a rather troubled season due to a handful of injury setbacks, making him miss six games already, with another issue occurring this week on international duty with England.
Harry Maguire
Ten Hag needs reliability and availability from his players, which plenty haven’t been able to provide, including Maguire, and with the interest in Bremer, he could be replaced at the end of the season.
Unlike the United number five, Bremer has yet to pick up an injury this season, which means he has played 28 out of a possible 29 Serie A matches this campaign, picking up 12 clean sheets in the process.
Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig described the 27-year-old as the “complete package,” relating to his ability on the ball, his defensive dominance, and his athleticism, which were all on display in his most recent game for Juventus against Genoa.

As you can see, the former Torino man is a physical monster, winning nine of his 11 duels in the tie, but what’s most impressive about Bremer is his ability to be one step ahead and read the game.
Alongside his pace, this allows the centre-back to have a proactive approach to defending, as shown by his five interceptions and three tackles, which will be important when Ten Hag inevitably plays a high line next season.
The latter is also vital when playing alongside Lisandro Martinez, who isn’t the quickest himself, but that slight weakness could be harnessed by Bremer’s ability to cover ground easily and recover swiftly.
Overall, Maguire has certainly been a solid player for United this season, but his injuries and profile have held the team back at times, with reports last season indicating Ten Hag's concerns over the former skipper's 'sluggish pace'.
Whereas, the introduction of Bremer could just transform the team’s approach entirely.
New South Wales opener scores 50, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson take two wickets each on an even low-scoring day at the MCG

New South Wales opener Nick Larkin held firm with a half-century against an in-form Victoria attack on a low-scoring day at the MCG.Larkin was the only Blues player to pass 50 as they were reduced to 6 for 149 before an unbeaten 74-run stand from Peter Nevill and Sean Abbott saved the day for the visitors.Victoria’s attack led by Peter Siddle and James Pattinson gave nothing away with four of the five bowlers used conceding less than two runs an over. Larkin faced 116 balls for his 50 with just three fours, weathering some high-quality fast bowling from Siddle and Pattinson. His patience eventually wore thin, falling to a top-edged slog sweep off Jon Holland. When Siddle induced a false stroke from Nick Bertus after tea, the Blues looked in danger of being bowled out for under 200. But a steadying partnership from Nevill and Abbott steered them to stumps. Nevill reach 40 not out without a boundary, while Abbott made an enterprising 45 to frustrate Victoria late on day one.

Leeds United once again failed to take an opportunity to move to the top of the Championship table as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Sunderland on Tuesday night.
The Whites could have gone ahead of Leicester City, who were beaten 1-0 by Millwall on the night, but could not force the ball into the back of the net against the Black Cats.
They were not helped, however, by the referee missing a seemingly blatant handball from Luke O'Nien as the defender deflected a corner away from Joe Rodon's head with an outstretched arm.
Leeds cannot blame the referee for the rest of their performance, though, as they only created 0.56 xG worth of chances from a staggering 70% of the possession.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.
However, there were positives to come from the match and one was the performance of Junior Firpo at left-back, as the former Barcelona defender has now made himself undroppable for Daniel Farke with a series of fantastic displays.
Junior Firpo's Sunderland blinder
The left-footed whiz caught the eye with his excellent showing against the Black Cats at Elland Road, ending the game with a match-high Sofascore rating of 7.6.
He showcased his quality both in and out of possession, although his creativity was not on full display, throughout the game and must now retain his place whenever he is fit.

As you can see in the table above, Firpo was dominant in his defensive duels, with 11 out of 18 won, as he rarely allowed the Sunderland players to get the better of him in physical contests.
The £30k-per-week dynamo also completed 100% (2/2) of his attempted dribbles to get out of danger when under pressure, in order to retain possession for Leeds.
He may, though, be disappointed to have ended the game with zero chances created for his teammates to break the deadlock on Wednesday night.
Junior Firpo's undroppable form
The Dominican Republic international was selected to be on the bench in the recent 2-2 draw with Watford after the international break, as Sam Byram started the game ahead of him at left-back.
Byram recorded a Sofascore rating of 7.1 and created one chance in his appearance on the left side of the defence, which was a solid outing from the former Norwich City man.
However, Firpo has since started the subsequent three Championship matches and earned Sofascore ratings of 7.7, 7.7, and 7.6 against Hull, Coventry, and Sunderland respectively.
Junior Firpo
In those three games, the impressive star provided four key passes – more than one per game – and created an eye-catching three 'big chances' for his teammates.
Byram, meanwhile, has only created one 'big chance' in 29 league matches for Leeds this season, which shows that he does not offer anywhere near as much creativity as Firpo.
The former Barcelona gem's fantastic creative work in recent games and his phenomenal defensive effort against Sunderland, in a blinder of a performance at left-back, is why he should now be undroppable for Farke when fit between now and the end of the season.
The former wicketkeeper and now world-renowned commentator also cautioned against leaving Tim Southee out in the pink-ball Test
Andrew McGlashan in Perth11-Dec-2019Former New Zealand wicketkeeper and now world-renowned commentator Ian Smith believes room has to be found for Lockie Ferguson to play the first Test against Australia in Perth.Ferguson, who has enjoyed impressive returns in limited-overs cricket, is uncapped at Test level but with the Perth Stadium wicket expected to provide pace and bounce, Smith argued it is time to unleash him to provide a point of difference in the New Zealand attack for when the ball doesn’t swing.ALSO READ: Pink ball, 40-degree heat… New Zealand brace for ‘most extreme’ Test in PerthNew Zealand coach Gary Stead acknowledged the skills Ferguson would bring to the side but said that it was difficult to fit him into a settled line-up. There may yet be a vacancy in the XI if Trent Boult does not prove his fitness from a side strain, but if Boult is available, Smith agreed it would a tough decision on who would miss out and suggested there could be a case for not playing Mitchell Santner and going in with an all-pace attack.”They’ve got to wake up and pull the curtains and find out where they are and that’s Australia and that is conducive to bowling fast. I believe he [Ferguson] should play,” Smith, who will be commentating for , said. “He’s an element of the unknown. They’ve all seen him do very well in the World Cup but you can’t coach [someone to bowl] 145-150kph and, if it’s very accurate, it’s very often hard to play and commands respect.Lockie Ferguson steams in during New Zealand’s training session•Getty Images
“The reason I would have him is it’s all very well for the ball to swing and seam around initially but at 135kph when it stops doing that, how are you looking? That’s bit of a problem from New Zealand’s point of view. I’d have him in the side.””Would you put him instead of Wagner? Probably not. Wagner is going to give you 110 percent for 100 percent of the day, so I’m not sure I would. What I would think about here knowing it hasn’t had a massive history of Test cricket or spin I might even think about playing four [fast bowlers] and just going at Australia and saying ‘You against us, us against you; fight fire with fire’. But [New Zealand have] got to find room for him.”ALSO READ: Is this the best New Zealand Test side of all time? There would be a significant risk in going in without a spinner in a Test that is set to be played in very high temperatures. The other option could be to leave out Tim Southee, who averages over 50 with the ball in Australia. Smith, however, cautioned against that because of the threat Southee could pose with the pink ball.”It’s a difficult call; it’s one they have to consider because if it’s a one for one and you keep Santner in probably Southee is the one they’re looking at,” he said. “But I’ll bring in the pink ball to that. Red ball, bright sunny day late in the afternoon – I’m with you, but I just worry that late in the afternoon the pink ball kicks in all night and Southee over the years has been one of the best seam/swing bowlers that we’ve had and that is an asset we might just need at this particular venue.”Of New Zealand’s prospects of securing just their second series win in Australia – after the 1985-86 triumph in which Smith played – he was confident they have the side to pull off victory, but the opening exchanges in Perth will be vital.”If they hang in, they have a right royal chance of pulling it off,” Smith said. “I think they can go the distance. I say that because I’ve seen them do it for a number of years, they aren’t ranked No. 2 because they are an overnight good side, they have been playing good cricket in most conditions for quite some time.”The only worry I’ve got is that sides have come over here labelled as underdogs and thought like underdogs. That’s more the New Zealand psyche that anything else, but I do believe ability-wise I think they are ready. Whatever they do, New Zealand have to start well. First hour, first session they have to win that. If they do, I think they are on track.”
Players not provided with any reason for two Logan Cup matches not getting underway as scheduled

Zimbabwe’s players have not been provided with any reason for the two Logan Cup matches that were supposed to begin on Thursday not getting underway as scheduled. The first-class domestic tournament started on December 10, after a delay to the start of the season while ZC waited for an ICC disbursement following its reinstatement as a Full Member in October. The competition is in its fifth round and has already been disrupted once. Last week’s match between Rhinos and Tuskers, due to take place at Takashinga Cricket Clun, did not happen.ESPNcricinfo understands that the players believe there are insufficient funds to play the matches, taking into account the costs of match fees and ground preparation. An insider confirmed the players have not received any communication about the rescheduling of fixtures. ZC did not respond to a request for comment. However, a national team camp is taking place in Harare in preparation for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which takes place later this month. The provisional squad includes 25 players including nine uncapped players. Among them are Brian Mudzinganyama and Kevin Kasuza, who are third and fourth on the Logan Cup run charts and Charlton Tshuma, William Mashinge and Victor Nyauchi who are sixth, eighth and ninth on the wicket charts respectively. The familiar names of Brendan Taylor, Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano are also in training with the national side. The series against Sri Lanka starts in 10 days’ time and will be Sean Williams’ first as Zimbabwe’s captain. Zimbabwe have not played a Test since November 2018, when they drew a series in Bangladesh. Since then, they failed to qualify for the 2019 50-overs World Cup and were unable to participate in the qualification for this year’s T20 World Cup because they were sanctioned by the ICC for government interference in the game. The ICC has since reopened the door to Zimbabwe and provided a much-needed financial life-blood. ZC is dependent on the ICC’s money, especially to ensure the continuation of domestic cricket.Zimbabwe provisional Test squad: Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza Butt, Regis Chakabva, Brian Chari, Tendai Chatara, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Craig Ervine, Kyle Jarvis, Kevin Kasuza, Timycen Maruma, William Mashinge, Prince Masvaure, Brandon Mavuta, Peter Joseph Moor, Brian Mudzinganyama, Tapiwa Mufudza, Carl Mumba, Tinotenda Mutombodzi, Ainsley Ndlovu, Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi, Brendan Taylor, Donald Tiripano, Charlton Tshuma, Sean Williams
Glasgow Rangers are back in action in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night as they travel away to face Dundee in their rearranged fixture.
They were initially supposed to play each other before the recent international break only for a waterlogged pitch to force a postponement on the day.
The Light Blues now have the chance to move back to the top of the division with a win against Dundee, as they are currently one point behind Celtic with one game in hand on their rivals.
This comes after Phillipe Clement's side battled back to secure a 3-3 draw against the Hoops at Ibrox on Sunday, with a stoppage time equaliser from Rabbi Matondo ensuring the hosts did not go four points adrift of the opposition in the top-flight.
The Belgian boss may now look to make some changes to his starting XI from that game, and here is FFC's predicted Gers lineup to take to the field against Dundee.
1 Jack Butland
Jack Butland
Despite letting in three goals against Celtic, Jack Butland should retain his place between the sticks as it could have been more than three without his presence.
The pick of his saves came during the first half as the former England international acrobatically tipped a Matt O'Riley header that was destined for the top corner over the bar.
2 Dujon Sterling
Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.
After the draw with the Hoops, FFC urged Clement to boldly drop captain James Tavernier to the bench after his poor display on Sunday to put down a marker to the rest of the squad ahead of the title run-in, showing that no one is exempt from being punished for below-par performances.
The Englishman, who did score from the penalty spot, was caught out by Daizen Maeda for the first goal and was robbed in possession by the Japan international again in the build-up to the corner that Celtic then won a penalty from.
This could open the door for Dujon Sterling, who won ten of his 12 ground duels against the Hoops, to play on his natural side on the right against Dundee.
3 Connor Goldson
Giant central defender Connor Goldson could be selected from the start again on the right of the centre-back pairing, after he won five of his seven duels against Celtic.
The English titan did give away a penalty, when his outstretched elbow was enough for the referee – with the help of VAR – to point to the spot, but could be in the starting XI on Wednesday.
4 John Souttar
John Souttar
Scotland international John Souttar put his body on the line in the Old Firm clash and was forced to wear a protective bandage around his head during the first half after a collision in the air.
Clement will be hoping for more brave defending, with less serious physical consequences, from the former Hearts star between now and the end of the season.
5 Borna Barisic
Borna Barisic
Sterling moving over to right-back would open up a space for Borna Barisic to return to the XI as the first change to the team that started on Sunday.
The Croatia international has provided three assists in 16 Premiership matches so far this season, and may look to add to his tally against Dundee – who have conceded the second-most goals in the division (54).
6 John Lundstram
Jack Butland
Former Sheffield United enforcer John Lundstram could keep his place at the base of the midfield for Rangers after a solid display against Celtic.
The English ace won 100% (2/2) of his aerial battles and completed 85% of his passes throughout the match, which shows that he was strong in the air and largely reliable in possession under pressure.
7 Mohammed Diomande
Mohammed Diomande
Alongside Lundstram, Mohammed Diomande could keep his place in the starting lineup in spite of a mixed showing in midfield in the Old Firm clash.
The midfielder was sloppy on the ball at times, with a pass success rate of 79%, but did also create one 'big chance' and won eight of his 15 duels on the deck and in the air combined.
He could keep his place in the XI ahead of former Norwich City midfielder Kieran Dowell, who came off the bench against the Hoops on Sunday.
8 Todd Cantwell
Todd Cantwell
In the attacking midfield position, Todd Cantwell could come in as the second change to the starting XI, with Tom Lawrence dropped to the bench.
The former Derby County midfielder only completed 58% of his passes and failed to register a shot on target or a key pass in 69 minutes on the pitch.
Cantwell has produced five goals and four assists in 18 league starts for the Light Blues so far this season, and should be selected in the number ten position against Dundee.
9 Abdallah Sima
Abdallah Sima
The third alteration to the starting lineup could come on the right of the attack as Abdallah Sima could make his return to the XI ahead of Scott Wright.
Clement brought the Senegal international, whose spirit has been hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting, off the bench against Celtic and he made a telling contribution as his deflected effort found the top corner to make it 1-1 at the time.
Sima, who has scored 11 Premiership goals this season, offers far more than Wright, who has zero goals and zero assists in 19 league matches this term, and should start.
10 Cyriel Dessers
Cyriel Dessers
Cyriel Dessers should retain his position as the starting number nine for Rangers as he is the only recognised number nine option in the squad, with Danilo and Kemar Roofe unavailable.
