Smriti Mandhana, Rachel Priest fifties keep Western Storm top

Openers put on 133 in 13.5 overs as Yorkshire Diamonds slump to third defeat in four

Western Storm’s relentless march towards next month’s Kia Super League Finals Day continued with a fifth straight win as openers Smriti Mandhana and Rachel Priest demolished a 152 target to beat Yorkshire Diamonds by nine wickets at York’s Clifton Park. The table-topping Storm initially stymied the Diamonds progress having elected to bowl, with five run-outs coming in the last 16 balls in a total of 151 for 9.Hollie Armitage top-scored with a career best 59 off 56 balls from number three before Sophie Luff threw in from the legside boundary to bring out a quartet of run-outs.Armitage’s innings was then dwarfed in comparison by Indian left-hander Mandhana and New Zealand’s Priest, who shared 133 inside 14 overs.Mandhana hit 70 off 47 balls and wicketkeeper Priest, who also had a hand in all five run-outs, made 72 not out off 43.It means at the halfway stage in their campaign, the Storm already seem destined for a place at Finals Day at Hove on September 1 having secured a bonus-point victory with 5.1 overs remaining.Armitage, strong on the sweep, shared a third-wicket stand of 60 inside eight overs with Indian Jemimah Rodrigues, advancing the Diamonds from 47 for 2 in the seventh over. The diminutive Rodrigues (28) played one particularly memorable lofted cover drive for four off the offspin of compatriot Deepti Sharma.Storm new-ball duo Claire Nicholas and Freya Davies struck, with Alyssa Healy caught at square leg on the pull off Nicholas’ offspin for 12.Lauren Winfield was stumped by Priest for 18 off seamer Sonia Odedra, with the ball trickling back towards the wicketkeeper off pad.Davies later bowled Armitage in the 20th over amidst the run out carnage, but England’s Anya Shrubsole was clearly the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 16 from four overs: she had Rodrigues caught at mid-off by Mandhana.Three of the five run-outs came in the 19th over – bowled by Shrubsole – as Yorkshire crucially stumbled. All five runs outs occurred in search of a second run going to wicketkeeper Priest.Last year, Mandhana was the KSL’s leading run-scorer with 421 from nine innings, including two fifties and a hundred. Here, she displayed similar dominance on the way to a 29-ball fifty, achieved in the eighth over when the Storm were 86 without loss.74 runs came off the powerplay, while opening partner Priest scored only eight of the first 58.Mandhana was particularly strong over cover and to long-off and, in the fifth over, hoisted legspinner Katie Levick for her only six.Priest played her part as the partnership approached 100, hitting seamer Alice Davidson-Richards for three successive boundaries to end the sixth. In 2017, the Kiwi had hit an unbeaten century in a 10-wicket win at this venue. Happy to camp on the back foot and hit powerfully to leg, she reached her fifty off 33 balls in the 10th over with the score at 102 without loss. She finished the game with two sixes in three balls off Linsey Smith’s left-arm spin. The Diamonds, for whom Davidson-Richards had Mandhana caught at long-on, have now lost three from four games.

Man Utd must regret sealing Ten Hag signing who’s cost £10m in 6 months

After finishing third in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup last season, many predicted that Manchester United would progress even further this term.

However, Erik ten Hag’s second campaign in charge hasn’t exactly gone to plan, with his team now facing an uphill battle to secure Champions League football.

An unfortunate injury crisis alongside poor recruitment has cost the Red Devils, with the youth having to step up and arguably becoming the most reliable players in the starting lineup over the last couple of months.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at one signing in particular that United have wasted millions on over just five months.

Sofyan Amrabat’s salary at Man Utd

In the 2022/23 season, Sofyan Amrabat was regarded as one of the most reliable defensive midfielders in football, after starring in the World Cup for Morrocco, being named in Football FanCast's Team of the Tournament, and helping Fiorentina to the UEFA Conference League final.

FFC World Cup Team of the tournament

In an attempt to reinforce the midfield and replace Fred, who left for Fenerbahce, the boss opted to bring the 26-year-old on loan to the club for £8.5m until the end of the season with an option to buy.

According to Capology, Amrabat is earning £65k-per-week at Man United, which doesn’t make him one of the top earners, but it is still more than Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and Scott McTominay.

Over the season, the defensive midfielder will earn around £3.4m without bonuses, but his loan spell hasn’t exactly been as successful as once anticipated.

What Amrabat earns compared to the United squad

The former Feyenoord gem has struggled to settle in the Premier League, and he only made his debut at the end of September after struggling with an injury.

Since then, he’s played just 12 times in the league, starting five games, with journalist Steven Railston stating that Amrabat “has been awful since signing.”

Sofyan Amrabat

If the ex-Fiorentina star had impressed during his loan, it is reasonable to presume that Man United would have been snapping up his £21.4m buy clause, hence the original loan cost of £8.4m.

Instead, he’s cost the club £10m already since arriving just five months ago, and he hasn’t justified the move one bit on the field. The number four has started more games for his nation than he has in the league for United this season.

As you can see, Amrabat is among the lowest-paid players at the club, but the problem lies in the fact that he's barely featured and that his time at Old Trafford isn't permanent.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like his involvement in the starting XI is going to increase any time soon, as he has only played ten minutes over four games since returning from AFCON.

Overall, if Amrabat had lived up to his potential and hype, then this deal could have been fantastic, but it is looking set to be another United failure in the transfer market unless a miraculous change occurs quickly, with the club reportedly not looking to make his move permanent in the summer.

Liverpool scouts now keeping tabs on in-demand "Rolls-Royce" midfielder

As Jurgen Klopp prepares to depart on the ultimate high at the end of the Premier League season, Liverpool have reportedly already turned their attention towards summer reinforcements with another midfield addition targeted.

Liverpool transfer news

The headlines surrounding Liverpool have unsurprisingly been centred around Klopp's replacement this summer, with Xabi Alonso seemingly the leading candidate. According to reports the Reds have already made an offer to Alonso in an attempt to secure his signature ahead of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The former midfield star has caught the attention of European football this season for his work with Bayer Leverkusen, who sit top of the Bundesliga and unbeaten in an extraordinary campaign.

If it is to be Alonso, then those at Anfield will need to turn their attention towards reinforcements who could slot into his 3-4-2-1 system. And that's where Teun Koopmeiners could come in. The Atalanta attacking midfielder has been linked with the Reds in recent days ahead of a potential summer move and could take up the role that Florian Wirtz has thrived in under Alonso, should Liverpool secure both moves.

Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners

Meanwhile, FSG have been tipped to move to hand their next manager an in-demand star. According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool are chasing Alan Varela and sent a scout to watch the Porto midfielder in his last outing – a stunning 5-0 thrashing of title rivals Benfica.

Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are "super happy" with "incredible signing"

He has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign.

However, if the Premier League giants do want to secure the defensive midfielder's signature this summer, not only will they have to trigger his reported release clause of €70m (£60m), but they will also have to beat the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund in a busy race to get their deal over the line in the coming months.

"Rolls-Royce" Varela can unleash Mac Allister

Anfield has seen in recent weeks just how good Alexis Mac Allister can be in a more advanced role, with Wataru Endo's return playing a large part in accommodating that. At 31-years-old, the Japan international is not a long-term solution to unlocking Mac Allister's best traits, however. And that's where Varela should come in.

The Porto midfielder, at 22-years-old, is already impressing and has even outperformed Endo in several areas so far this season, as the numbers show.

Given that Varela is Mac Allister's Argentine compatriot too, Liverpool could form an ideal partnership at the heart of their next manager's midfield. If the Porto man did arrive, he'd become the Reds' fifth South American in and around the current squad, adding to Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Alisson Becker and Luis Diaz.

What's more, Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig is someone who will certainly back Varela to succeed wherever he ends up, having praised the Argentine by describing him on X as a "Rolls-Royce" when detailing his ability.

ECB announce funding boost to transform women's cricket

Board pledges £20 million over two years and announces 40 new domestic contracts

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Oct-2019The England & Wales Cricket Board has pledged a funding boost for women’s cricket of £20 million over two years, and plans to invest £50 million in the next five years, in a bid to make cricket into a gender-balanced sport. The challenge of transforming women’s and girls’ cricket was one of six priorities within the ECB’s ‘Inspiring Generations’ strategy for 2020-2024, and part of the new remit is a commitment to the funding of 40 full-time professional, domestic contracts, in addition to the existing central contracts for England Women’s elite players.A ten-point action plan was unveiled by Clare Connor, the ECB’s managing director for women’s cricket, at an event in London, with a focus on five key objectives:Participation: To increase the number of women and girls playing cricket recreationally
Pathway: To develop aspiring female cricketers (U11-17) as players and people
Performance: To drive the performance of England women’s cricket through a new semi-professional, eight region structure
Profile: To elevate the profile of women’s cricket through The Hundred, the England Women’s team and the elite game
People: To increase the representation of women across the cricket workforce”Cricket has been an integral part of my life, as a player and in my role of Managing Director of Women’s Cricket. I have never been more excited by the opportunity in front of us right now,” said Connor.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Recent initiatives have given women and girls more opportunities to play, such as All Stars Cricket for 5-8-year-olds, the South Asian female activators programme, and the Kia Super League for our most talented domestic cricketers. But to truly transform women’s and girls’ cricket, we must now move from targeted standalone programmes to addressing the whole pathway as one.”We have an amazing opportunity to make cricket the sport we want it to be – a sport that is modern, innovative and inclusive. I have been so heartened by the level of enthusiasm, commitment and support for this plan from everyone involved in cricket.”Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, added: “During the development of Inspiring Generations, and extensive conversations and research across the game, the strong appetite to transform cricket’s relationship with women and girls was abundantly clear.”There is tremendous energy across the cricket network to pursue the game’s largest growth opportunity and to increase the number of women and girls playing, watching and volunteering at every level of the game.”This plan, formed in collaboration with the whole cricket network, and supported by our commercial and media partners, represents a crucial step in achieving our ambition of making cricket a gender-balanced sport.”The plan was produced following two years of consultation with all 38 Counties and Cricket Wales, and detailed analysis of thousands of survey responses from the recreational and elite game.To test some of the recommendations for the recreational game, ECB has run pilot programmes with over 600 cricket clubs to better understand the essential criteria in creating the most sustainable women’s and girls’ clubs.”This action plan is a really exciting next step in the continued growth of women’s cricket,” said Heather Knight, England Women’s captain. “We need more young girls to be inspired to play and those young girls need to be able to see a clear pathway above them that encourages them to continue pursuing the game.”As England players we’re fortunate enough to meet lots of young girls who love the game and it means so much to us to see how much they love cricket. Much of this plan is about normalising the game for women and girls and I’m excited to see how this increased opportunity takes the game forward.”

Faz o L!

Germán Cano balançou as redes.

JOGO TRUNCADO

Chelsea eye World Cup winner to replace Pochettino with internal talks held

Chelsea have reportedly held Stamford Bridge talks over a potential move for a World Cup winning manager to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea manager latest

It has so far been a debut campaign to forget for the Argentine in London, with the Blues struggling in the Premier League and losing in the EFL Cup final to Liverpool.

There is still time to salvage the season with FA Cup glory, however, Pochettino’s side will take on Manchester City in the semi-final at Wembley.

Some Chelsea supporters have made their feelings known towards Pochettino and owner Todd Boehly in recent weeks, but recent reports have claimed that Pochettino’s job is safe until the end of the season.

That doesn’t mean that potential targets aren't being assessed behind the scenes, with the likes of Eddie Howe, Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim all linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge. Now, a new name has emerged in the media.

Hansi Flick linked with Chelsea move

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, talking to GiveMeSport, Chelsea have held internal talks over a possible move for Hansi Flick as the Blues look at ‘succession planning’.

Hansi Flick

However, discussions haven’t been in an ‘emergency’ style as they still hope Pochettino can succeed in London.

Flick has been out of work since leaving his post as Germany manager back in September. A World Cup winner as assistant to Joachim Low in 2014, the 59-year-old took his first senior role in management back in 1996 with FC Bammental and led Hoffenheim for five years.

The 4-2-3-1 boss also managed Bayern Munich between 2019-2021, winning a number of trophies at the Allianz Arena.

Already linked with a move to replace Graham Potter at Chelsea in 2023, the Blues appear to have had their eye on Flick for some time, so it may not be a great surprise to see him arrive, should things not work out with Pochettino.
