Keemo Paul reprieves affected bowlers' confidence – Mashrafe

Keemo Paul was dropped twice at crucial stages of West Indies’ chase, and Mashrafe believed the hosts could have pulled things back had the catches been held

Bangladesh came away from their four-wicket loss to West Indies in the second ODI ruing two dropped catches at crucial stages of the game, which Mashrafe Mortaza felt affected the confidence of the bowlers.Keemo Paul was the batsman to benefit from both chances, in the 44th and 48th overs, and the fielder on both occasions was substitute Nazmul Islam. In the first instance, Paul was on 6 when Nazmul rushed in to catch a mis-timed slog sweep but couldn’t hold on to it. Then, with West Indies needing 23 off 13 balls, Nazmul overran Paul’s full-blooded pull but managed to stop a boundary. Paul’s unbeaten 18 was a perfect foil for Shai Hope during their 71-run unbroken seventh-wicket that helped the visitors level the ODI series.”We definitely suffered due to the dropped catches especially when we dropped Paul twice,” the Bangladesh captain said. “If Kemar Roach had come to the crease, it would have been slightly more difficult for them to rotate the strike. [Rubel] did get hit for a six first ball but he came back in the last four balls. He created two chances, and if that catch was taken off his bowling, the last ball would have been a dot. These small moments give confidence to bowlers.”We had two fielders [Liton Das and Imrul Kayes] outside today. We had Ariful [Haque], our best fielder, when Imrul left the field. [Nazmul Islam] Apu is the quicker of the two. He was having trouble seeing the ball on that side, although you can’t give excuses at this level.”Nazmul wasn’t the only one to put down chances on Tuesday. Imrul Kayes dropped a sitter at short fine leg before Shimron Hetmyer had opened his account. While it didn’t really hurt Bangladesh at that stage, as Hetmyer fell a couple of overs later, it brought to attention their fielding mixed-bag during this ODI series. While Tamim Iqbal took one of the best catches of the year in the first ODI, Ariful Haque, Rubel Hossain and Mushfiqur Rahim dropped catches. Darren Bravo was given reprieves on 13 and 18, after Ariful dropped a sitter at point while Mushfiqur was stretched by a chance that wicketkeepers usually want to take. Rubel dropped Rovman Powell’s skier off Shakib and although it didn’t affect the fielding side in terms of runs, the lapses brought unwanted focus on an area that has seen improvements in recent months.”You have seen the type of training we do. We do fielding drills every day, even on days when we don’t bat or bowl,” Mashrafe said. “But it is about confidence in the field. When you are uneasy dropping a catch, you tend to drop an easy one. It is totally about one’s mentality.”We missed a number of catches in these two matches, but we still want to move from this game with the positive things.”In the second ODI, Bangladesh were also slowed down by wickets right when they were looking to accelerate. Tamim and Mushfiqur fell in the space of a few overs after they had added 111 runs for the second wicket, and scored fifties. Mahmudullah fell in the 41st over, at the start of his favoured time in an innings. Shakib also fell three overs before the end.”We should have scored 15-20 runs more. We may have reached nearly 300 had Tamim and Mushfiqur batted longer. If the Shakib-Riyad partnership would have extended by 6-7 overs, we may have at least reached 270-280, which would have definitely helped the bowlers,” said Mashrafe.

Arsenal could sign Rice regen in ‘one of the best young midfielders in Europe’

Arsenal may have lost out on their first Premier League title in 19 years last season, and in quite a painful manner too, but with how Mikel Arteta's men have kicked on this year, you wouldn't have been able to guess.

The Gunners are through to the knockout rounds of the Champions League, one point off of top spot in the league, and they have done all of this without displaying the same silky, free-flowing football they produced in 2022/23.

Instead, the north Londoners have built their side around a tough-as-nails defence and a new-look midfield marshalled by their £105m bargain, Declan Rice.

Arsenal could sign their own Hojlund in "fearless" £25m talent

The 23-year-old could help fire Arsenal to the title.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 15, 2023

With how well the former West Ham United captain has taken to life in N5, fans should be delighted with the latest player linked with the club, a Belgian midfielder hailed as a rice 'regen', Arthur Vermeeren.

Arsenal transfer news – Arthur Vermeeren

According to 90min, several top European clubs are interested in Royal Antwerp's exciting defensive midfielder Vermeeren, including both north London sides, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

The report has revealed that both clubs have already sent scouts to observe the highly-rated youngster, along with German club Borussia Dortmund, and if that wasn't enough competition, 90min also confirmed that Barcelona were incredibly keen on the Belgian in October.

To make things even harder, the Gunners will probably have to pay a pretty penny to land the 18-year-old, as in an interview with Belgian media (via FootballTransfers), Antwerp CEO Sven Jacques said:If we sell it, it will definitely be at the right price. We’ll see whether he becomes the most expensive outgoing transfer in Belgium ever.”

The current record sale is the €36.5m – £31m – AC Milan paid to sign Charles De Ketelaere from Club Brugge in 2022.

Still, for a player dubbed "one of the most complete young midfielders in Europe" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who has three years left on his current contract, that might prove to be value for money.

Arthur Vermeeren could be Arsenal's next Declan Rice

Now, that is a huge statement that isn't lost on anybody, but with how highly thought of Vermeeren is, how impressive he has been in the last couple of years and the position in which he plays, it isn't the most outlandish of comparisons.

In fact, it is one that has been made by others as well. For example, GOAL's Thomas Hindle specifically makes mention of the Arsenal man as the player most like the intelligent Belgian, pointing out their similar career trajectories, their ability to play in a box-to-box role, sniffing out danger and helping their side progress the ball up the pitch.

The pair also share an impressive level of match intelligence, with David Penneman, Belgium U17 coach, saying (via Football Talent Scout): "It was his inconspicuousness that caught my attention. Arthur solved problems before they could be imagined, by constantly scanning the environment and playing football efficiently. He thought two steps faster than the rest."

Finally, when comparing the pair's underlying numbers, the "excellent talent", as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, does remarkably well. He doesn't come out on top, but considering the six-year age gap between the two, he is producing numbers closer to that of Rice than many might expect.

The Lier-born prospect seriously impresses with his offensive statistics, ability to win tackles, and ball recovery numbers, and while the weaker league should be taken into consideration, the fact that he is performing like this at age 18 suggests that the hype around him is very much justified.

Ultimately, if Arsenal can sign "one of Belgium's biggest jewels", as dubbed by Jacek Kulig, they should.

He doesn't have to come in and be a first-teamer right away; just having him learn from Rice in training could do wonders for him, and the Gunners could have a ready-made replacement if the Englishman moves on at any stage – or even the perfect partner.

Callum Ferguson century trumps Shaun Marsh's 96*

Ferguson’s 113 not out off 53 balls helped Sydney Thunder chase down Perth Scorchers’ 181 with four balls to spare

The Report by Tristan Lavalette24-Jan-2019

A masterful Callum Ferguson century negated an earlier Shaun Marsh gem and powered Sydney Thunder to an impressive victory to leave Perth Scorchers’ finals hopes hanging by a thread. After being sent in, Shaun Marsh’s return seemingly sparked Scorchers, the batsman’s 96 not out off 55 balls being the backbone of the side’s sizeable 4 for 181. Ferguson, however, outshone that with a great knock of 113 not out off 53 to guide Thunder to a crucial victory.A rampaging Ferguson smashed eight sixes and eight fours in his tour de force knock. He also received invaluable support from debutant Matthew Gilkes, who made up for dropping Shaun Marsh in the first over the match by scoring a fluent 51. With this victory, Thunder are back in the top four, while bottom-placed Scorchers are almost certain to miss the knockout stages for the first time.Shaun Marsh survives two dropped sittersIn a major shakeup, Scorchers dropped veteran opener Michael Klinger, the BBL’s highest run-scorer ever, after he averaged just 12.77 in the tournament. They had a ready-made replacement in Shaun Marsh although he almost fell for a golden duck only to be reprieved by nervous wicketkeeper Gilkes.A leaden-footed Marsh nicked a full Gurinder Sandhu delivery to Gilkes, who fumbled the straightforward chance and was unable to snare it on the juggle.Thunder quickly regrouped with Nathan McAndrew’s first delivery trapping Cameron Bancroft lbw, leading Mitchell Marsh coming to the crease slightly higher in the order than expected.Mitchell Marsh, who like his brother made his BBL return after national duty, unleashed several blows to ensure Scorchers had a fruitful Powerplay. Shaun Marsh, conversely, was watchful apart from one trademark exquisite straight drive off Chris Jordan.Shaun Marsh tried to make his move in the ninth over against the spin of Fawad Ahmed but miscued to deep midwicket only to receive another reprieve as Daniel Sams fumbled the chance. Mitchell Marsh, however, did not have the same fortune when he skied a Chris Green delivery into the hands of Sandhu to leave Scorchers 2 for 68 in the tenth over.Shaun Marsh puts the foot downAshton Turner has been Scorchers’ talisman in the tournament but fell for just 4 as the hosts wobbled midway. Thunder captain Shane Watson relied on his spinners, who bowled nine straight overs, to slow the scoring until Hilton Cartwright smashed 16 off Green in the 14th over to help Scorchers’ regain the momentum.Cartwright fell shortly, putting the burden on Shaun Marsh to finish it off and the left-hander put the foot down by blasting the normally reliable Sams in the 18th over for 20 runs. Sams, literally, was feeling the pain when Marsh clubbed a delivery straight back into his right ankle, forcing him off the ground.Marsh started the final over on 79 and appeared set for his maiden BBL century when he smashed 14 runs off the first three deliveries from Jordan. After missing out on the next two deliveries, Marsh could only hit the final delivery, a full toss outside off, for a single to fall four short of a century. But thanks to Marsh’s heroics, Scorchers pummelled 55 runs off the final three overs.Ferguson and Gilkes hammer ScorchersJason Behrendorff, another of Scorchers’ key inclusions, claimed the prized wicket of Watson in the fourth over, but Ferguson came out blazing to fuel Thunder’s hope. He signalled his intent with a brutal blow over Behrendorff’s head for six and was joined in by Gilkes, who was keen to make up for his earlier blunder behind the stumps.Gilkes’ promotion up the order proved a masterstroke. The 19-year-old was not intimidated by short-pitched bowling from Nathan Coulter-Nile, even upper-cutting the bowler for a six.Ferguson took a liking to Usman Qadir’s innocuous spin and smashed a trio of sixes in the tenth over to power Thunder into a strong position at the halfway point.Ferguson shuts the door on the ScorchersFerguson scored his 1000th BBL run in style with a commanding boundary over extra cover off Mitchell Marsh and then outdid himself next ball with a six to bring up the century partnership. Gilkes reached an impressive half-century off 36 balls before holing out in the 15th over. The match tightened when Anton Devcich and Sams fell but Ferguson had other ideas as he smashed three consecutive boundaries off Behrendorff in the 18th over. He then reached his century with an upper-cut six in the penultimate over before sealing the deal with four balls to spare.

PCB to look into conflict-of-interest issue after PSL season

The dual roles of Mickey Arthur and Azhar Mahmood with the national team and Karachi Kings could come under review at the board’s next governing council meeting

The PCB’s board of governors (BoG) has formally taken up the issue of dual roles causing potential conflicts of interest ahead of the Pakistan Super League. The BoG has agreed to chalk out a policy on engagement of PCB employees with PSL franchises. In the 52th governing council meeting today, the issue came up for discussion officially, with a focus on national-team coaches who also work with PSL teams. The PCB has confirmed the development, but with the league starting in a week’s time, a final decision on the issue will have to wait until the next board meeting, with all appointments to be reviewed after PSL season ends on March 17.Ever since Ehsan Mani took over as PCB chairman in September 2018, high-profile names such as Mickey Arthur have come under the spotlight, with other high-profile names having to give up roles in the PSL.Last year, the PCB removed chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq from the PSL player draft committee because of a potential conflict of interest since he was involved with a talent-hunt programme run by one of the tournament’s franchises, Lahore Qalandars. Tauseef Ahmed, who is part of the national selection committee while also being Islamabad United’s spin coach, was also left out of the PSL draft committee and later axed by the franchise.ALSO READ – Mickey Arthur’s dual roles with Pakistan and Karachi Kings back in the spotlightPakistan head coach Arthur is also part of the Karachi Kings coaching staff, which has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest. In 2016, Arthur was already Karachi Kings’ head coach when he took over the Pakistan role shortly after Waqar Younis’ resignation. Arthur, with then PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan, had negotiated a contract to allow him to fill both roles, foregoing his monthly PCB retainer during the duration of the PSL. When he renewed his contract as Pakistan coach until the 2019 World Cup, this agreement remained intact. Arthur has coached Karachi Kings in all three seasons of the PSL so far, and is set to do so again in the 2019 edition. Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood had been part of the franchise as well but that is no longer the case.PSL franchises haven’t raised the issue openly, but have hinted at concerns about having Arthur in both set-ups. “If you talk about me as a head coach, its challenging for a coach and selector within one set-up,” Aaqib Javed, the Lahore Qalandars head coach, told ESPNcricifo after the first season. “There is a reason why it’s been avoided and seen as awkward. I have great regard for Mickey but this should be avoided.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Arthur has no vote in picking Pakistan’s squads, though the selectors take his inputs on board, but he does have a vote in selecting the final playing XI. “I see absolutely no conflict at all and in fact see it as a massive benefit because it allows me to see all the best young talent available,” Arthur said in 2016. “I certainly am professional enough not to in any way be biased in selections or opinions on any player because at he end of the day I am here to assist Pakistan cricket and make Pakistan cricket the best and I am not going to jeopardise that in any way.”

New update on Newcastle interest in Radu Dragusin after talks recently held

Newcastle United are interested in securing the signing of a "dominant" player in the January transfer window, with a new report claiming the Magpies "like him a lot".

Newcastle linked with new defender

Eddie Howe has been hurt by the absence of Sven Botman for so much of this season, with the Dutchman limited to just five appearances in the Premier League. He was such a stalwart throughout last term, and while Jamaal Lascelles has provided cover, the club have conceded 21 times in 17 games, including three recently against Everton.

Botman has been just one of an endless string of injury blows for Newcastle, with influential left-back Dan Burn another defender who had been absent for some time. Nick Pope is out for several months with a shoulder issue, and that is only a few of the fitness woes on show, with Joe Willock, Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak others who have been absent at different times.

The hope is that the injuries start to ease, but in order to ease the potential issue of more coming Howe's way, he could look to bring in some new faces in the January transfer window. Newcastle have been linked with a move for Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio, as well as Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie, and it looks as though they could be putting their efforts into signing another defender.

Newcastle "like" Radu Dragusin

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are still eyeing a move for Genoa defender Radu Dragusin, having previously held talks with him in recent months.

The Magpies reportedly "like him a lot" and Genoa will "hardly be able to resist" a sizeable bid for him in January, so a transfer midway through the campaign can't be ruled out.

Dragusin could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle if they can get a deal over the line, having previously been lauded as "dominant" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who pointed out "tackling, athleticism, positioning, heading" and "passing" as strengths in his game.

The 21-year-old has become such a regular for Genoa since arriving from Juventus on a permanent basis earlier this year, starting 16 Serie A games this season and averaging three aerial duel wins per game.

Given his age, he could be viewed as a long-term signing by the Magpies – someone who wouldn't only come in straight away and provide stiff competition at the heart of the defence, but also potentially act as Botman's centre-back partner for years to come, possibly acting as an upgrade on Schar and Lascelles.

Newcastle could sign Almiron upgrade who's "very fun to watch"

Newcastle United could look to sign this big upgrade on Miguel Almiron in January.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 18, 2023

The fact that Genoa seem relatively happy to sell Dragusin next month acts as an added bonus for Newcastle, and while there is clearly plenty of competition for his signature, Howe will hope that he sees them as the best possible choice.
