PCB rethinking Mohsin Khan's appointment to cricket committee

ESPNcricinfo understands the board is displeased with his recent slew of public comments and has reportedly placed a gag order on him

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2018

Mohsin Khan offers Mohammad Hafeez some advice•AFP

It’s only been two weeks since a four-member cricket committee came into being to oversee Pakistan’s cricket affairs, and though they may not have begun their work properly just yet, they’ve been in the news every single day. That is almost entirely down to Mohsin Khan, the head of committee, who’s made a number of public statements that have put the PCB in an awkward position and have raised tensions with other stakeholders. This, ESPNcricinfo understands, has compelled the PCB to start rethinking its decision to appoint him, and it has reportedly placed a gag order on his public comments. The PCB has refused to confirm or deny whether it has asked him to stop talking so publicly.”My statements are wrongly being taken and few people who are against my appointment are doing propaganda,” Mohsin told ESPNcricinfo. “I am here to serve my country and I have had never a discipline issue ever in my entire career. I don’t want to go into details and want to ignore all the negative stuff. I am directly reportable to chairman and he is perfectly fine with me.”Mohsin has riled up coach Mickey Arthur as well as captain Sarfraz Ahmed in his short tenure so far. In comments made just before his appointment, Mohsin called Arthur a “stupid donkey” on a TV channel. Soon after he argued that Sarfraz should be relieved of the Test captaincy. All that came after his very appointment had forced the PCB into an apparent disowning of the Qayyum Report on match-fixing – something it was then keen to insist was not the case. Arthur is understood to want an apology from Mohsin – the pair, according to the terms of the committee, officially meet three times a year – though the PCB chairman Ehsan Mani has said only that all parties should move on from the matter.Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq is also thought to be annoyed by Mohsin’s public comments on selection matters. He has reached out and sought clarity from the board about the committee’s role and suggested that he will not be happy with any intervention in selection affairs. ESPNcricinfo understands that Mohsin’s role and behaviour has been discussed among senior board officials, discussions that have also brought up names of who could replace him should he continue as he has done. All of Mohsin’s comments have been made to TV channels, a few of them to to whom he is contracted as an expert for this home season. It is not clear what officials think of his TV commitments though, as his PCB role is honorary, it is unlikely they can get him to stop them.

Everton officials make another complaint as board rages at fresh update

Everton's board have been left raging at a recent development that has emerged, according to a new report.

Everton's 10-point deduction

There were genuine signs of improvements at Goodison Park prior to the international break, with some important Premier League wins coming their way, and talk of a potential relegation battle beginning to disappear.

Despite some positivity emerging, Everton have now been rocked by the 10-point deduction that has been handed to them for breaching financial rules, in what is a cruel blow for Sean Dyche and his players, although the club have confirmed they will appeal the decision and expect it to be significantly reduced.

It means that the Blues have suddenly been thrown straight back into the relegation zone, with only Burnley behind them on goal difference, and 17th-place Luton Town two points clear of Dyche's men. Granted, there is still time for Everton to pull away and not suffer relegation from the Premier League for the first time in their history, but the deduction has made life so much harder, and supporters will be hoping that an appeal is successful further down the line.

While this blow has been bad enough, another setback has also emerged, with reports claiming Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City could demand compensation from the Blues after their financial punishment.

Everton lodge complaint over legal case

According to a new update from Football Insider, Everton have now lodged another complaint over the legal battle with three other English clubs. The Toffees aren't happy that the case is set to be heard by the same panel that delivered the club’s 10-point deduction, with the title saying that the "board rages at a new twist".

"The Everton board have filed an official complaint over their £300million legal case against Leicester City, Burnley and Leeds United, Football Insider has been told. The trio of clubs are taking legal action against the Toffees and seeking compensation after they were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial and sustainability rules this month.

"As reported by the Daily Mail, the case is set to be heard by the same panel that delivered the club’s 10-point deduction from their Financial Fair Play case."

There really is a feeling of 'when it rains it pours' for Everton at the moment, with the club having to tackle so many issues on and off the pitch, causing a major headache for anyone associated with the club. The points deduction is a tough one to stomach, and the last thing they need is to also be hit with a huge compensation payout to the clubs mentioned above.

On top of this, the ongoing takeover situation at Goodison continues to rumble on slowly, with 777 Partners making little progress in bringing the Farhad Moshiri era to an end, so it could be difficult for Dyche and his squad to focus on the primary job in hand.

Everton supporters will simply have to hope for the best, with the appeal seeing the decision overturned, but more important than anything is the Blues remaining in the Premier League beyond this season, ensuring that they are in their new Bramley Moore Dock home when the 2024/25 season gets underway.

Williamson, Watling hold off Pakistan's surge on even first day

Yasir Shah led the way once again, but the captain’s 89 and Watling’s resilient 42* have kept New Zealand fighting in the third Test

The Report by Danyal Rasool03-Dec-2018

Pakistan celebrate the dismissal of Kane Williamson•AFP

Day 1 Stumps This was a day of – pardon the cliché – proper Test cricket. It was a day that Yasir Shah threatened to hijack once more after an extraordinary pre-lunch burst that reduced New Zealand to 72 for 4, with three wickets lost for two runs. Equally, it was a day that Kane Williamson looked to have salvaged for his side with a phenomenally gritty partnership alongside BJ Watling, who finished unbeaten on 42 off 180 balls, having come in to bat all the way back in the first session. In the end, it was perhaps a day that concluded with as little to separate the sides as there had been at the toss, where a delighted Williamson had decided to bat first, as you do in Abu Dhabi.New Zealand went to stumps with three wickets still in hand, having accumulated 229 attritional runs across 90 overs. Watling kept the innings together after Pakistan looked like they would blow away the tail when Williamson fell, and on a track that is already taking in ludicrous turn for Day 1, every run he and the remainder of New Zealand’s batsman can put together could be priceless by the end of the week.Bilal Asif was just as impressive as Yasir throughout the day, though it wasn’t until the final session that he had something to show for it. That was when the pitch started misbehaving altogether more noticeably; the players might gave gone in for tea, but the pitch seemed to be on something stronger than that. The only problem the spinners had was the ball was turning too much, an unusual situation for the opening day of a match. Bilal accounted for Colin de Grandhomme this way, with a sharply turning ball flicked to leg slip, where Asad Shafiq completed a smart catch. Tim Southee, too, fell to the off spinner, and it was around then New Zealand were in danger of being bowled out on Monday before the late resistance of debutant Will Somerville in Watling’s company. But the day was arguably defined by the second session partnership of Williamson and Watling, which accounted for 104 runs in 249 balls. After Yasir’s salvo in the opening session, New Zealand were left to pick up the pieces, and the pair foraged and gathered rather well. New Zealand abandoned all other concerns but the defence of their wickets, not worried that the run-rate dropped like a stone. The pair scrapped their way through the 32 overs in the middle session, adding 72 runs along the way, but most gratifyingly, they had the asterisk next to their name that denotes their continued presence at the crease after tea.Even scoring at more than 2 per over in the session was a climb from where the run-rate was at one point: from overs 20-44, New Zealand added 45 runs to their total, going at under 1.50. In the second half of the post-lunch session though, Williamson began to capitalise as the bowlers’ lengths drifted more regularly, and brought up another plucky half-century. He was unbeaten on 71 by tea, but it was altogether slower going for Watling. The wicketkeeper batsman has been around the New Zealand setup for almost a decade now, and you could see why. Often, he has played innings with complete disregard for his own reputation or instincts, with his reserves of concentration seemingly never running low. Monday was another such day, where for the best part he was simply hanging around for Williamson, an anchor around which his captain built his own innings. He struck only one four in over two sessions of play, but it is that store he sets by his wicket that makes him such a valuable cricketer for the Black Caps. It is not the first time he has done so, and it’s unlikely to have been the last.Williamson, for his part, was desperately unlucky to miss out on what would have been a well-made hundred, chiefly responsible for ticking the scorecard along when Pakistan were at their most menacing. He was the one who declawed Yasir after lunch. He also seemed to take the fangs out of the pitch, which began to look treacherous after he had been dismissed. So supremely comfortable was he at the crease, that it was a shock to see him dismissed with such a well-rehearsed plan. Hasan Ali encouraged a drive on the up, where Asad Shafiq was perfectly positioned for a simple catch, sending the New Zealand captain back 11 runs away from a 19th Test hundred. In the morning, Yasir’s bruising body blows to New Zealand in the last 20 minutes before lunch undid much of the hard work of Jeet Raval and Williamson in the previous hour. It had all been going along steadily for the visitors before Yasir found prodigious turn to beat Raval’s inside edge, the ball clipping enough of leg stump to withstand a review from the batsman. That brought a very edgy-looking Ross Taylor to the crease, who went back to a ball so short it was almost a long-hop. It neither turned nor bounced, instead clattering into the batsman’s middle stump. Henry Nicholls’ dismissal was even softer, with the left-hander sweeping all around a Yasir googly, managing only to catch an edge that dragged it back into the stumps. The day had begun perfectly for New Zealand. The toss is more important here than just about anywhere in the world outside of Sri Lanka, with the side batting first only ever having lost once. But Pakistan, fielding 18-year old debutant Shaheen Afridi, found cheer in his first spell, trapping Tom Latham in front of the stumps. Fittingly enough for a young man with the future ahead of him, it was a review that got him the wicket, with the umpire originally having turned the appeal down.Having seen out a crucial passage of play late in the day, New Zealand will need to be up for another one early morning tomorrow. Instead of being skittled out under 225, the lower order has held its own against a surging Pakistan late in the day, even a new ball unable to dislodge the unflappable Watling, with Somerville playing an impressively composed innings on debut. So important is this first innings total any runs scored now already feel like a burden on a potential fourth innings chase, which, judging by the way today has gone, could come far sooner than the fifth day.

Crystal Palace keeping tabs on "intelligent" gem who "understands tactics"

Crystal Palace are reportedly keeping tabs on an "intelligent" former Premier League player, with numerous other clubs also keen on snapping him up at the end of the season.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles could well be looking to make new signings when the January transfer window opens, having suffered a stuttering start to the season, with pressure increasingly growing on manager Roy Hodgson.

It remains to be seen how much funds will be made available for fresh faces to arrive at Selhurst Park, but it would be a surprise and a disappointment if Palace didn't do any business ahead of the second half of the season.

While January rumours have been swirling of late, with Newcastle United attacker Jacob Murphy seen as a target for Palace, a new claim focuses on a possible signing next summer.

Crystal Palace want Sam Greenwood

According to a fresh claim from TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace are one of a number of clubs who are interested in signing Leeds Uniteds Sam Greenwood, who joined Middlesbrough on loan in the summer transfer window.

Leeds' Sam Greenwood

"We understand that West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham, Leicester and Southampton have all been keeping tabs on Greenwood’s progress in the North-East. Should Boro earn promotion, however, then a permanent stay at the Riverside could well become a very serious option for the 21-year-old."

It does look as though a January move is unlikely to come to fruition, however, considering Greenwood is contracted to Boro until the end of the season, so a switch to south London could materialise once the campaign has ended instead.

Greenwood could be an astute signing by Palace, considering he is still a maturing player who should only get better with age, already making 25 appearances in the Premier League for Leeds, scoring once and assisting four times in the competition.

The 21-year-old has been hailed for his various qualities as a footballer by former Whites manager Jesse Marsch, who said of him last year:

"First of all, he has a lot of flexibility to his game. He's played six, eight, 10, he can play striker. In some ways, it's not fair to him to try different positions, but he's an intelligent player. He fits within what we're trying to build within our team. He's a hard worker, he's an intelligent guy, he's able and that's the reason why we use him in a lot of positions, because he's very adaptable. He understands tactics and his role and he has big talent."

Greenwood could add some firepower in the final third that has been lacking at Palace this season, with just 13 goals scored in as many Premier League matches before Sunday's trip to West Ham, and only Odsonne Edouard has netted more than three times in the competition.

Granted, the Englishman is still a fairly inexperienced player who hasn't yet fully proven himself at the highest level, but he is someone with lots of potential, and he could thrive under the right manager at Selhurst Park.

Nottingham Forest make enquiry about deal to sign “relentless” forward

Nottingham Forest have enquired about a deal to sign an exciting forward in January according to a fresh report, and he's already playing his football in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest transfer targets

With Steve Cooper’s side sitting 15th in the table, the manager will know that he’ll have to enter the market in the new year to sign fresh faces who will be able to improve his squad and the results on the pitch, so names have started doing the rounds.

The Reds are reportedly expected to renew their interest in Celtic’s attacking midfielder Rocco Vata having previously failed to secure his services, but alongside the centre of the park, the hierarchy appear keen to bolster their ranks across the frontline.

Nottingham Forest hold interest in "exciting" gem who's out of contract in 2024

Forest could land themselves a potential bargain in the transfer market, according to a report…

BySean Markus Clifford Nov 27, 2023

Newcastle United’s right-winger Jacob Murphy has been highlighted as a potential candidate, even though he’s only made one league start this season due to him being out on the sidelines with a recurring shoulder injury (WhoScored – Murphy statistics).

England’s former youth international still has four years remaining on his deal (Newcastle contracts), and whilst the black and white stripes want to open talks over an extension, that hasn’t stopped the 28-year-old from entering onto the radar at The City Ground.

Evangelos Marinakis keen on Jacob Murphy

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are interested in Murphy, but they aren't alone with Crystal Palace also hoping to get a deal over the line in January.

"Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy is attracting interest from Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

"Palace and Forest are both looking to bolster their attacking options in the mid-season window and have lined Murphy up as a potential target. It is believed both clubs have made enquiries about his price tag and availability as the new year approaches."

Murphy is a "relentless" workhorse at Newcastle

Across all competitions this season, Murphy has clocked up five involvements, four assists and one goal, in nine appearances, which shows how much of a positive impact he can make in the final third, but he’s actually capable of playing in eight different positions, highlighting the fact that he's a versatile operator.

The Wembley-born talent also has an impressive record when coming up against Cooper’s side having secured three victories as part of the opposition, so if he can perform this well when on the away team, imagine what he’d be capable of under the guidance of the Welshman in the Midlands.

According to Newcastle reporter Chris Waugh, Murphy is a “relentless” runner and will always give 110% effort every game, so for everything that he could add to the side, this is a no-brainer of a deal to complete should the opportunity present itself in January.
