Everton: Toffees bled dry by £120k-p/w flop

Everton’s financial woes are well-documented, with their unruly spending, managerial merry-go-round and new stadium all providing various drains to dig them a deeper and deeper hole.

As such, the playing squad has somehow dwindled in years gone by due to questionable recruitment, with Farhad Moshiri’s lack of faith in one head coach resulting in a squad assembled by various figures all pulling in different directions.

It is a testament to this failure that Alex Iwobi’s Deadline Day exit last week marked the departure of yet another of Marco Silva’s signings, whilst one still remains in Andre Gomes.

The Portuguese boss left Goodison Park in 2019, and has since been appointed by Fulham, earned them a promotion and now reunited himself with the Nigeria international in west London as the Cottagers seek to extend the gap between them and the Toffees.

Whilst many might look to name Ronald Koeman as the manager who arguably did the most damage to the club, with his 2017 summer having proven catastrophic in the long run, Silva made some high-profile and lucrative errors of his own, which have certainly contributed to their current frustrations.

Despite this, it must be said that some of these failed acquisitions were just plain unfortunate.

Who played well for Everton last season?

Last season marked the second consecutive year that the Toffees had narrowly avoided the drop, taking it even closer than they had the campaign prior by relying on a final-day home victory over AFC Bournemouth.

With Abdoulaye Doucoure scoring the only goal of the game, he was one of many to be revitalised by the new management of Sean Dyche. His finishes in the second half of that term proved pivotal, alongside other starring roles from Dwight McNeil, Jordan Pickford and James Tarkowski.

However, a player who often went under the radar for his quality was Yerry Mina, who was widely recognised as the best defender at the club. The only issue was that he was seldom available for selection.

Across his four years on Merseyside, the Colombia international mustered just 99 appearances, whilst missing at least 54 games from the various injuries he suffered across that period. Silva even branded the 6 foot 4 titan “unlucky” back in 2019, with the worst of his ailments still to come.

Despite that, the 28-year-old did manage to make seven of those showings in that last Premier League season, with that short stint proving pivotal. His 7.20 average rating across that period was the highest of those who started five or more matches and was bolstered by his two goals, 88% pass accuracy, 2.1 tackles and four clearances per game, via Sofascore.

He was a true defensive hero, and although brief, his presence was vital in gaining precious points under both Frank Lampard and Dyche. Journalist Patrick Boyland even sought to praise one such showing, writing: “Tell you what, that was some performance from Yerry Mina. Absolute colossus”.

However, it remains to be seen whether he was worth the vast expenditure that his stay at Goodison Park commanded, given his lofty initial fee and astronomical wages.

How much did Everton pay for Yerry Mina?

As the hype grew around Silva’s tenure at Everton, given he had just led them into Europe in his first full season, things went into overdrive when Director of Football Marcel Brands went to Barcelona and came back with three of their stars.

First they welcomed Lucas Digne, who proved to be an instant success – with four goals and four assists in his debut season – before nine days later they would complete another double swoop, bringing in Gomes on loan and Mina permanently, in a deal rising to £28.5m.

Given how the defender had just performed at the recent World Cup, this marked an extraordinary coup on the surface for a young, promising centre-back who could underpin their defence for the next decade.

What was Yerry Mina’s salary at Everton?

Handed a five-year deal to reward his trust in joining their project, the club also saw fit to attach a lucrative £120k-per-week wage to that commitment, as one of numerous financial blunders over the years.

His lack of playtime made such a decision age incredibly poorly, as other, more reliable assets found themselves earning far less.

Had Mina managed to stay fit, however, the narrative on this move would have looked much more positive.

When did his contract expire?

The 41-cap ace saw his time on Merseyside come to an end in the summer just gone, leaving on a free transfer despite his heroics to help them stay afloat.

Few could argue with that decision, with the huge fee he was swallowing hardly worth his unreliability.

sean-dyche

Mina has since signed for Fiorentina on a significantly lower wage, and unsurprisingly is yet to even make an appearance for the Italian outfit. At the very least his absence for them will not prove as costly as it did for Everton.

Did Yerry Mina deserve to earn £120k-per-week?

Whether he deserved his lucrative contract is a notion still debated even now by supporters, as his importance to the side when fit was unparalleled. The issue just remained that he seldom was.

Journalist Patrick Boyland penned one article to outline this notion back in 2022, writing for The Athletic: 'This season, Everton have taken an average of just 0.7 points from the 21 league games Mina has missed. Extrapolate that across a full season and they would end up with 27 points from 38 matches.

'In the 11 games he has played, their win percentage is 36 (up from 19 without him) and they average 1.4 points per game. Over a whole season, that would give them more than 50 points.

Everton defender Yerry Mina.

'The numbers were even more extreme for 2020-21 when a 58.3 per cent win ratio with Mina in the team dropped to 21.4 per cent in his absence.'

Whilst these figures are undeniable, missing as many games as he did ultimately made him far from deserving of earning one of the club's highest wages.

How much did other Everton players earn?

This was especially pertinent when comparing him to some of the stars he was earning more than, with only Pickford's £125k-per-week salary higher, via Capology.

Even the ever-present Tarkowski, who had joined on a free transfer just last summer was earning less, despite playing every minute of every league game.

However, perhaps the biggest tragedy was that during the 2020/21 season, when James Rodriguez linked up with Carlo Ancelotti on Merseyside, Mina even earned more than his compatriot despite the world-class talent he remained.

With Rodriguez a flawed, yet majestic 'genius' – as described by The Times' Paul Joyce – it says a lot that Mina was raking in an even bigger wage at the time, indicating just how much the Colombian bled the club dry prior to his recent exit.

Taylor puts birthday toast on hold in recovery bid

‘Magnificent’ Taylor levels one-day series

Ross Taylor will postpone his birthday celebrations as he races to be fit for the deciding ODI against England in Christchurch after suffering a recurrence of his leg injury during his monumental 181 in Dunedin.Diving for the crease on 109, Taylor appeared to aggravate the quad injury that kept him out of the Wellington match although the exact diagnosis will not be known until Thursday. He also suffered cramp, but after being strapped up by the physio was able to see New Zealand to a memorable series-levelling chase.Taylor, who will be 34 on Thursday, has been carrying a special bottle of wine around with him ready to mark the occasion – but those plans are now being put on hold, with isotonic drinks the main order of the next 48 hours.”I’m not plugging my birthday, but I did have a very nice bottle of wine in my suitcase which I was going to open but, damn it, don’t think I can have it if I’m to give myself any chance of playing on Saturday,” Taylor said.Taylor added that he felt the same pain he suffered in Mount Maunganui when he went down earlier in the series following a series of blows on his legs in Hamilton and during practice, suggesting it was more of a dead-leg issue than a strain. Whether this latest problem is more serious remains to be seen, but the turnaround to Christchurch is just three days.”We’ll just wait and see,” he said. “I’ll give myself the best chance of playing.”His feat at University Oval was still sinking in shortly after the victory but he said the innings “has to be up there” among his best. He walked in at 2 for 2, with both openers dismissed for ducks, but started to rebuild alongside Kane Williamson before the major stand of 187 with Tom Latham. It was as that fourth-wicket stand reached about 80 that Taylor really believed the chase was on, aided by the short boundaries which meant the risks of going for the ropes were reduced, while also making a concerted effort to go after Adil Rashid.”Once we got to about 160-170 I thought if we batted really well we were a chance,” Taylor said. “Until then it was just about batting and trying to get a position from where we could win. I thought we were ahead of the game when Colin de Grandhomme came out, he only got 20 but it was a great cameo which meant we could take it deep without taking risks.”If you lose three wickets in the first 10 you more often than not lose the game so we were able to tick that off, then get a little momentum. We wanted to be a little more attacking against Rashid and I think we did that well today. They had to bring other bowlers back, spin was always going to play a big part and if we could nudge it around it gave us a chance.”Taylor’s century was the decisive innings of the match, but the game turned when England collapsed to lost 8 for 46 after Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root had added 190 for the second wicket. At that point England were on target for well over 350 – a chase that Taylor said would have been “unrealistic from 2 for 2″ – but instead they barely batted out the overs.Eoin Morgan insisted it wasn’t an example of aiming too high – similar to his comments after the 2015 meeting between these sides where England were bowled out for 302 at the Ageas Bowl with overs to spare – but acknowledged it had been a poor effort at building on an ideal base from the top order.”I’m a big fan of over-ambition,” he said. “We’ve scored 400 twice, again earning the right. When two guys play out of their skin to do that, we’ve got to put the cream on the cake and the cherry on top. We were miles away from it today. Our skill level wasn’t good enough to take risks that early – whereas it should be.”This was a different style collapse to the ones England have suffered previously at the start of their innings – 20 for 6 against South Africa at Lord’s and 8 for 5 against Australia in Adelaide – and Morgan said he wouldn’t be overly concerned unless it becomes a pattern.”We’ve certainly had collapses of the top order – in the first 10, we’ve been four or five down,” he said. “But certainly when we’ve earned the right to push for a 370 score, we’ve not had a collapse like that. Normally one of us has come off.”That’s the way the batting order lines up, and that’s the way our template looks. If it continues to be a pattern we’ll look into it deeply. But everybody walking off, it’s hurting deep that we’ve not been able to capitalise on that.”

Spurs: Conte’s outstanding signing has seen his value rise by 108%

"It’s simple. We’ve got our Tottenham back," were the words of Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy at yesterday's Fan Forum.

"I just feel that we’re seeing football that we used to see and that’s all that we want, to see the players give everything and play attacking football. We want the fans to have a connection with the players and the staff to have a connection with the players. You feel it throughout the club, at this stadium on non-matchdays, at the training centre, we’re together. It’s so noticeable.”

Such transparency from the top down is all fans of the north London outfit have ever wanted despite their recent failures, as the 61-year-old businessman revelled in his appointment of Ange Postecoglou.

Admittedly, it is the Australian who must be credited with turning around the Lilywhites, as he continues to win over fans with his witty and insightful comments whilst getting his players up for every game and reestablishing the connection between playing staff and fans.

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-transfer-market-value-spurs-leicester-city

In fact, the former Celtic boss has even helped some of his struggling stars turn their careers around thus far, as if to emphasise his faultless start to life in England.

Whilst the form and feelgood factor may not last forever, it should certainly be enjoyed whilst it can.

Who is performing for Spurs this season?

One of the outstanding decisions made by the 58-year-old tactician was to swoop for James Maddison, with the £40m expended already looking like a coup given his instant impact.

The former Leicester City ace tops their average ratings in the league thus far but is closely followed by other star performers such as Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma.

However, one man who also deserves plenty of credit actually sits sixth on that list, with Dejan Kulusevski slowly recapturing the form that saw him lauded upon first leaving Juventus.

Setting himself impossibly high standards with the blistering first six months he enjoyed, the Sweden international posted five goals and eight assists across just 18 league games. Journalist Josh Bunting would laud him during such a stellar period: "Dejan Kulusevski has to be one of the signings of the season, he’s completely rejuvenated Tottenham, outstanding performance again yesterday against Leicester, 14 games and 8 assists is a superb return, the intensity of the league suits him much better in terms of his game."

With his loan rightfully maintained, last season marked the toughest yet for the 23-year-old, who struggled under Antonio Conte in what was a torrid year for the entire club.

Few came out with any credit, not least the winger who scored just two league goals all campaign.

So, to see him having already matched that tally after five games this term will be a welcome sight to Postecoglou, who gains much more than just goalscoring from the creative leader.

After all, his performance against Sheffield United was outstanding even without taking his late winner into account, as he recorded an 8.5 rating, buoyed by the five key passes he made, via Sofascore.

Unsurprisingly, Kulusevski would rush to praise his new manager for his return to form: "I think football has to be fun. That's why we started playing and that's when great results can come. I don't have to be more as a wing-back when we're defending so I'm enjoying it a lot. I learn a lot of things every day. I like that because I'm still young, so it's still good to go every day, to hear new things and keep improving."

How much did Spurs pay for Dejan Kulusevski?

Although his tenure was largely unsuccessful and pretty damaging to the club, Conte was arguably one of the finest operators in the market whilst he was in charge.

After all, signings like Destiny Udogie and Yves Bissouma are already at the forefront of their new revolution, whilst Richarlison could prove to be the perfect forward for Postecoglou should he find his goalscoring form.

5

€18m (£15.5m)

*Although Conte was the man who signed Kulusevski on loan, the permanent fee only went through the summer after his dismissal.

However, arguably the cream of the crop was the acquisition of Kulusevski, who cost the club just £25m after spending a year and a half with the club on loan beforehand. A successful trial period made the cut-price fee even sweeter.

How much was Dejan Kulusevski worth at Juventus?

With his impressive performances at the highest level, it should come as no surprise that the 32-cap star has seen a sharp upturn in value since leaving Italy.

However, that's not to suggest that he was by any means undervalued, with Transfermarkt highlighting the various peaks and troughs enjoyed during his few years in Turin.

Reaching a peak of €45m (£39m) in late 2020, that would later drop to the lowest point whilst at Juventus, €30m (£26m). Therefore, it could be argued that the fee Conte paid marked a fair price for his services, although that is a figure that has since skyrocketed.

What is Dejan Kulusevski's market value now?

CIES Football Observatory seeks to offer the loftiest valuation of the 6 foot 1 trickster, clearly expecting big things from the man who has started the season so well.

Dejan Kulusevski

Should such fine form continue, the €60m (£52m) figure placed on his head could certainly have grown further by the end of the campaign.

To compare this with the £25m initially paid to bring in the winger permanently, it is startling that already his value has soared by 108%. With the promise that his performances are set to improve too, this marks only the beginning of such a rise.

Why is Dejan Kulusevski worth that much?

Given that Kulusevski is already a fully-fledged international despite his youth, that is certain to have a huge impact on his astronomical valuation. Not to mention the European experience gained across two huge clubs in Spurs and Juventus.

However, it is the promise that he boasts that likely has spurred on such a hefty fee to be placed beside him, as it is expected that the £110k-per-week magician will only go from strength to strength.

antonio-conte-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-romelu-lukaku-inter-milan-postecoglou

That is at least what Conte expected, who sought to laud the sparkling future of his former star: "He is doing great things, he has a lot of potential. He is a crack and has a great desire to improve, he sets himself the goal of becoming an important player. It was an excellent investment for Tottenham."

Postecoglou will hope to continue the steady growth enjoyed thus far with Kulusevski, who he actually has the Italian to thank for his presence at the club.

Cost £0, now worth £16m: Everton struck gold with “outstanding” brute

Everton supporters have been through the ringer through the course of the previous two seasons and unless Sean Dyche leads them on a solid winning run, they could face yet another relegation battle.

The Toffees have finished 16th and 17th during the last two Premier League campaigns and there has been a variety of reasons behind the poor performances and lack of confidence at the club. Both Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard were far from ideal choices to lead the Merseyside outfit, while their records in the transfer market were underwhelming to say the least.

Players such as Neal Maupay, Salomon Rondon and Dele Alli didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and it is perhaps no surprise that Lampard and Benitez failed to make their mark in charge of the club.

In saying that, there have been a few hidden gems that have moved to Everton since the summer of 2021 which have proven to be solid signings and will play become key members of the squad in the coming years.

Nathan Patterson and Dwight McNeil are talented youngsters who could become integral members of the first team for the foreseeable future, yet it is a signing made by Lampard that could potentially turn into a lucrative piece of business by the Toffees…

How much did James Tarkowski cost Everton?

After escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Lampard entered the summer transfer window with grand designs on how to bolster his squad so that this wouldn’t occur again.

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

Amadou Onana looked like a promising arrival, joining from Lille, while James Garner signed from Manchester United and McNeil arrived from Burnley and these all looked like positive signings. James Tarkowski also made the move to Merseyside, and it was arguably their finest signing that summer, as he joined for nothing after he left Burnley following the expiration of his contract.

Director of football Kevin Thelwell praised the player when he joined, saying: “We are delighted to welcome a player of James’ quality to Everton and believe he will be an excellent addition to our squad. The statistics show that James has consistently been one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders in recent years. Added to his playing attributes, his excellent leadership skills and experience will be a huge benefit, too.

“James is a player I’ve admired for many years and Frank was very keen to bring him to the Club. We look forward to him being a highly-valued member of our squad next season and in the years to come.”

This was a player who had made 219 appearances for Burnley and had spent the last six seasons in the top flight, gaining plenty of experience in the process.

The move has since gone on the become a very shrewd signing by the Toffees, especially considering his market value has risen due to his performances over the previous 12 months and this could potentially generate Everton a vast profit should they be tempted to sell him.

What is James Tarkowski’s market value now?

When the centre-back moved to Everton in July 2022, his market value was only €8.4m (£7.2m), yet over the next 12 months, this value would rise sharply.

Indeed, it didn’t even take a month for Tarkowski to be valued at €29.8m (£26m) according to Football Transfers and while this has dropped slightly in the months since, the defender is now currently worth €19m (£16m), and this represents an impressive increase from when he made the move to Everton in 2022.

Why is James Tarkowski worth this much?

Although the Toffees conceded 57 goals last season and finished in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone, there were a couple of bright sparks throughout the season and Tarkowski was one of them.

The 30-year-old played a total of 40 games across all competitions during his maiden season on Merseyside, and he certainly proved to the supporters why the club were keen on signing him in the first place.

James Tarkowski

Tarkowski ranked third across the Everton squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.2) during the 2022/23 season while also ranking third for accurate passes per game (34.6) and interceptions per game (1.3), clearly indicating that he settled in well at the club and was a positive figure as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Not only impressive among his teammates, Tarkowski also showcased his abilities when compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues. Indeed, the defender ranked in the top 1% for blocks per 90 (2.46), the top 8% for aerials won per 90 (3.16) and rather remarkably the top 1% for touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 (2.33), indicating that he is among the finest on the continent over a wide range of metrics.

The former Burnley defender has continued this rich vein of form into the current season, topping the pile for Sofascore rating (7.33) and interceptions per game (1.7), while also ranking third for clearances per game (3.0) and fourth for accurate passes per game (35.6), emerging into a player Dyche can count on as he looks to lead them into the top half of the table.

Dyche knows all about his qualities, having managed him when they were both at Burnley and the 52-year-old has even lauded the defender as “outstanding” in the past.

Everton haven’t had much joy to cheer about with regard to success in the transfer market over the previous few years and this has arguably led to them underperforming and battling relegation on a consistent basis.

Tarkowski has proven to one of their few shining lights over the last year or so and his performances possibly allowed the Toffees to retain their Premier League status and without him performing heroics at the heart of the defence, they may have found themselves in the second tier this term.

There is still a long way to go in the current campaign, but Everton have no doubt hit the jackpot on Tarkowski, and they will hope he can give them the boost they need to push into the top half under Dyche.

Gambhir returns to Eden but spotlight on Karthik

Dinesh Karthik’s tactics have been called into question in KKR’s two losses so far this season. Now he must match wits with the man who led KKR for seven years, winning two titles

Agarkar: I’d go with Curran over Johnson in KKR XI

Big PictureThey say they’ve parted on good terms, but neither Kolkata Knight Riders nor Gautam Gambhir will want to let off-field lovey-doveyness infect their on-field mission. The former captain is returning for a scalp. Both of KKR’s losses have come from tactical blunders – keeping Vinay Kumar for the last over of a tense chase against Chennai Super Kings and mismanaging of resources against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dinesh Karthik is chained to a harsh spotlight and now he has to face the man against whom he will always be judged.Gambhir could not expect better circumstances for his return to Eden Gardens. He has got 20 wickets from 11 innings – his second best against IPL teams, after his 26 against King XI – coupled with an economy rate of 6.3 Shahbaz Nadeem has an IPL economy rate of 7.16. That puts him at No. 9 among the 29 spinners who have delivered at least 500 balls in the tournament. For added context, a vast majority of those who have fared better tend to be considered A-list bowlers: Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Narine, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shakib Al Hasan, Anil Kumble, Rahul Sharma, Johan Botha A pick-me-up for the local fans ruing defeat at Eden: the four times Knight Riders reached the IPL knockouts, they had won only four or fewer matches at home. Of course, when they won the title in 2014, they only played four games in Kolkata. When they did the same in 2012, they won only three out of seven on their own turf Since hitting three 80-plus scores in a row in 2014, Glenn Maxwell has been dismissed for 20 or less 34 times in 50 IPL inningsStrategy puntIs there a cure for Lynnsanity? Possibly. He has been dismissed by a left-arm spinner four times in the seven IPL innings he has faced one. Furthermore, take a look at his head-to-head with Shakib Al Hasan in T20 cricket: four innings, three wickets and only 11 runs off .Fantasy pickThere are several bankable players to choose from here – Narine, Russell, Lynn – but won’t most of the guys you’re playing against be thinking along those very same lines? So why not a gamble? Why not Rishabh Pant, who at No. 3 will get enough time in the middle to collect points for you (with the added bonus of helping his team, of course). He should also offer a few add-ons for catches and/or stumpings. And he’s not half bad against spin, specifically legspin: 115 runs off 78 balls while being dismissed only twice in 12 innings. Translation: average of 57, strike-rate 147.Quotes”As a young player trying to find your feet, you don’t always get to bat where you’re used to. It’s the same with bowlers. Most teams have a number of experienced players, not many are playing 18-year-olds. I think [here] they’re backed just by the fact that they’re in the team.”
