West Ham: Moyes Could Yet Seal Bargain Ward-Prowse Partner Before Deadline

West Ham United have enjoyed a solid start to their 2023/24 Premier League campaign, securing four points from six and defeating Chelsea in the process.

Having won their first major trophy in over 40 years last season, David Moyes has seemingly carried this momentum into the new term and will be hoping for the good form to continue.

Having used the £105m that was raised via the sale of Declan Rice to sign Edson Alvarez, James Ward Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos, the Scot is still aiming to add a few more signings before the end of the transfer window.

Could he perhaps make a swoop for a former crowd favourite who has already shone during a spell at the club?

Are West Ham United going to make another signing?

According to ExWHUEmployee via his West Ham Way Patreon, West Ham could potentially offer Jesse Lingard a short-term deal.

He was released by Nottingham Forest following the expiration of his contract at the end of last season and has since been training with the Hammers in a bid to maintain his fitness.

The ever-reliable insider told supporters:

“He (Lingard) is looking good fitness-wise. At this stage, any offer would be short-term, around 6-12 months with a lower wage but incentive-based.

“At he start it was described to me as a ‘tiny chance’ – now there is a ‘chance’, it seems its getting more likely.”

It could certainly be a risk-free signing for Moyes and given the fact they have another hectic schedule, combining group-stage European football along with domestic commitments, securing him for nothing could be a shrewd move.

What could Jesse Lingard offer West Ham United?

The last two seasons haven’t exactly gone to plan for the former Manchester United gem, having made just 42 appearances since the start of the 2021/22 season.

He is fondly remembered for his stunning loan spell at the club during the second half of the 2020/21 season, getting back to his best which saw him star for England at the 2018 World Cup.

Across just 16 appearances for the Irons, he scored nine goals and grabbed five assists, demonstrating just how good he can be when full of confidence.

Indeed, Lingard created three big chances, averaging 1.1 key passes per game and succeeded with 1.1 dribbles per game, proving he was a key attacking threat for the club.

Jesse Lingard

If, and it’s a big if, he could replicate that sort of form should he rejoin the club, he could strike up a solid partnership with Ward-Prowse.

The former Southampton maestro has already grabbed two assists on his first appearance for the club last weekend and sitting just behind Lingard at the heart of the midfield, he would surely feed him the ball often.

Last term, the 28-year-old registered nine big chances while averaging two key passes per game, all for a relegated outfit, and this could directly benefit the 5 foot 8 whiz, who could feed off this creativity in a no.10 role, just behind the striker.

The 30-year-old free-agent might not play every single match, but there is no doubting his quality when he is given the confidence to perform and play his own game.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand praised the talented Englishman during his temporary spell at the Hammers two years ago saying:

“I’ve argued with pundit after pundit, on-air, and off-air. He could play in any top team because he’s an intelligent footballer. He can play off one-touch or two-touch. Anyone who knows football surely has to see the kid has a talent.”

His levels have dipped since then, but with Ward-Prowse being a key influence playing behind him, Lingard could return to his previous levels should Moyes give him another chance in what would likely be a bargain deal for all parties.

West Ham: Moyes Could Partner Benrahma With £20m Transfer Target

West Ham United are beginning to ramp up their transfer business as the summer window draws to a close in the next week.

Having already signed Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, and Konstantinos Mavropanos, David Moyes is now targeting reinforcements across other areas of his first team squad as several players have emerged as targets.

Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is one name on Moyes’ list while Romelu Lukaku is also a player who has emerged as a recent target.

The Scot is also showing interest in another Chelsea player who enjoyed a loan spell in the Championship last term. Could a move materialise before next week?

Are West Ham United interested in Ian Maatsen?

According to The Evening Standard, Chelsea players Conor Gallagher and Ian Maatsen could be braced for further interest from West Ham as Moyes looks to bolster his squad.

With just one year on his current contract, it appeared as though the Dutchman was ready to extend his deal, especially with Mauricio Pochettino wanting to keep the defender as part of his first-team squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Earlier in the summer transfer window, the same outlet suggested that the Blues were looking for in excess of £20m to let their academy starlet leave permanently.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

Moyes could face a fight with Burnley for his signature however and Alan Nixon claimed two weeks ago that a loan deal would be the only option, saying:

“Hammers are keen on Maatsen as a replacement for outgoing Aaron Cresswell and hope to complete the move this week.

“Maatsen has impressed in pre-season but may be allowed out for a season if he signs an extended contract.

“Burnley have tried to buy Maatsen and would also take him on loan. However, Hammers may come up with a bigger rental fee.”

How good is Ian Maatsen?

The 21-year-old gem shone for Burnley in the second tier last season, ranking fifth across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.01), while also ranking first for big chances created (11), fourth for tackles (1.9) and third for interceptions (1.4) per game, showcasing his talents across both attacking and defensive metrics.

Indeed, the youngster was so impressive from an attacking point of view, that he ranked in the top 4% for progressive passes per 90 (6.44) when compared to positional peers along with ranking in the top 8% for progressive carries per 90 (3.3) and it clearly indicates he could be a danger going forward.

Not only that, but he could also get left-winger Said Benrahma firing again due to his attacking nature.

Ian Maatsen

The Algerian winger registered just nine goal contributions in the league last term – six goals and three assists – while creating only five big chances but having someone like Maatsen providing support from behind could give him a major boost.

The young starlet could create plenty of chances for Benrahma and allow him to potentially get on the scoresheet more, while also supporting him on the left flank.

He was lauded by Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore during his loan spell last season, who said:

"The kid is bright, he’s hugely talented, he wants to learn, and he never gives up."

When Benrahma is fit and firing, he is a major asset to West Ham.

If Moyes manages to secure the signing of Maatsen for the remainder of the season, it could light a fire under the Algerian and spur him on to enjoy one of his best-ever campaigns.

Johnson relives old memories in Lions assault

It was not quite the Ashes, but for Mitchell Johnson, a chance to take on England Lions beat just sniping from the sidelines

Mitchell Johnson, scourge of England in the Ashes series four years ago, relished an opportunity to come face to face with England Lions as Perth Scorchers claimed a six-run defeat at the new Perth Stadium to avenge their defeat in the first of three T20 encounters. It might have lacked the drama of his 37 Ashes wickets in 2013/14, but 10,000 spectators had been invited to the new stadium and Johnson was pumped up with desire to relive old times. The Lions were helping to test the new square, and Johnson was out to test the Lions as he dismissed Joe Clarke in his opening burst and later bowled Mark Wood – this after Wood had the temerity to strike him over long on for six. Johnson completed his night by running out Dom Bess with a direct hit from the boundary.Nick Gubbins, who took a stinging blow to the ribs from the first ball he received from Johnson, responded with 68 from 52 balls, comfortably the highest score of the match, but he was also run out, in the penultimate over, as the Lions fell short of the Scorchers’ total of 148 for 5.”Facing Johnson was a great experience for me,” Gubbins said. “He was definitely switched on. He smacked me in the ribs from the first ball I faced, which was a nice little war wound to take with me. He was definitely scowling and saying a few words.”I loved it. You watch him on the TV and wonder what it’s going to be like facing him. That’s exactly the sort of test we all want when we come on tour with the Lions.”Gubbins insisted that Wood was also high in pace, although he has not been able to force himself into the reckoning for the third Test at the WACA. “Woody’s bowling fast, really fast,” he said. “He was bowling pretty hairy stuff. It was a funny pitch, because some balls didn’t go through, but others flew.”The deciding match against the Big Bash champions is at the Murdoch University ground on Friday – the last match of their tour before the Lions return to England next week.

Desde aquela partida, a equipe disputou mais cinco jogos com três derrotas e dois empates. O ataque marcou apenas quatro gols. A defesa mostrou a sua vulnerabilidade e levou nove tentos.

Nottingham Forest could sign dream Chalobah alternative

An update has emerged on Nottingham Forest and their efforts to bolster Steve Cooper's defensive options before the summer transfer window slams shut tonight.

What's the latest Nottingham Forest transfer news?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the club are preparing a bid to sign Norwich City centre-back Andrew Omobamidele this evening.

The reporter has said that they are eyeing up the Republic of Ireland international as Trevoh Chalobah is not accepting a switch to the City Ground from Stamford Bridge.

This comes after Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett claimed that the Tricky Trees enquired about a possible deal to sign the Chelsea central defender before the deadline passes.

The reporter has, however, added that there has not been any progress as of yet as the player would like to stay and fight for his place in Mauricio Pochettino's bloated Blues squad, which is backed up by Romano's Tweet.

How good is Andrew Omobamidele?

Forest can now land a dream alternative to the £50k-per-week defender by securing a deal to sign the Canaries starlet before the 11pm cutoff.

Omobamidele, whose former coach Kenny Molloy described him as a "Rolls Royce", is an excellent prospect who could be a superb addition to Steve Cooper's team and one for the future.

The 6 foot 3 titan only turned 21 in June and is three years younger than Chalobah, which means that he has more time on his side to grow and develop with more experience at the top level. This means that the Forest boss could work with him on the training ground to hone his skills over the years to come.

Omobamidele made 34 Championship appearances for Norwich during the 2022/23 campaign and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.82, whilst he also won 60% of his individual duels.

Norwich defender Andrew Omobamidele.

The talented youngster also showed glimpses of his quality in the top flight for the Canaries as he averaged a rating of 6.82 and won 59% of his battles on the ground over five games throughout the 2021/22 season.

On the other hand, Chalobah, who was hailed as "selfless" by former boss Frank Lampard, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.75 over 25 Premier League outings for Chelsea and came out on top in 57% of his contests last term.

This suggests that the potential is there for Omobamidele to offer more quality than the English brute if he is able to translate his small sample size of top-flight showings and his Championship performances over to a full season of Premier League football.

The Irish ace could offer more strength in individual duels to allow Forest to win the ball back more frequently whilst also delivering a higher average performance level at the back.

Felipe (6.99) was the only Tricky Trees centre-back who averaged a Sofascore rating higher than Omobamidele's score of 6.82 last season, which suggests that there is also the potential for him to make an immediate impact on the pitch if Cooper can get the best out of him.

Therefore, the Norwich gem could be an excellent addition to the squad in the short and long term, which is why he could be a dream alternative to Chalobah if they are able to get a deal over the line.

Crane rues an English spinner's lot

Mason Crane thinks English spinners are short of game time in first-class cricket, although a Test debut in Melbourne might change all that

George Dobell in Melbourne22-Dec-20171:37

Can England avoid a whitewash?

The scheduling of the county season is making it “tough” for young spinners to develop, according to Mason Crane.A day after Dawid Malan warned against overbowling fast bowlers, Crane has suggested there is “more opportunity” for young spinners in Australia. While Crane, the second spinner in the England squad, is grateful for the support he’s received from the ECB as a young player, he gently suggested that playing more Championship games “in the height of summer” and using the Kookaburra ball in county cricket might assist the development of spinners further. His own example makes for an interesting case study. Having impressed in Grade cricket last year (he claimed four five-fors and three seven-fors on the way to becoming the leading wicket-taker in New South Wales premier cricket), he was selected for New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield side. That made him their first overseas player since Imran Khan in 1984-85, and their first English player since William Caffyn in the 1960s. He performed admirably, too, with five wickets in the match. But on arriving back in England, he had to sit out several early season matches for Hampshire as they reasoned that, in such seam-friendly conditions, their spin-bowling duties could be fulfilled by the allrounder Liam Dawson. As a result, Crane found himself playing 2nd XI cricket for the first part of the season and didn’t feature in the Championship until May 19.”It is tough at the moment,” Crane said. “Half the games are in either September or April. In September, for example, they start the games a bit earlier so there’s still some dew around. It’s difficult to play another spinner. They played another seamer instead.”Even if you get a wicket where you think you might be playing, the weather suggests otherwise. And if it is going to be a two-and-a-half day game because of the rain, you probably want an extra seamer or batter. So it’s tough.”There’s more opportunity out here. We play a lot of white-ball cricket during the height of summer in England. Getting as many games in the height of summer as we can would be ideal for spinners.”Mason Crane is overjoyed at claiming AB de Villiers as his maiden international wicket•Getty Images

Another initiative Crane suggests is using the Kookaburra ball. The Duke’s ball, which is currently used in the County Championship, tends to offer prolonged assistance to seam and swing bowlers which can negate the need for spinners. The Dukes ball is also, Crane feels, tougher to grip when new for a spinner.”Maybe we could use Kookaburra ball in England,” he said. “They use the Duke’s here sometimes. I reckon you can bowl with these Kookaburras straightaway, new out of the packet. Duke’s are a bit slimier when they are new but I don’t really mind.”While Crane is grateful for the opportunities afforded him – notably the early promotion by Hampshire and England, the opportunity to work with Saqlain Mushtaq and the England age-group tours – he feels the trip to play Grade cricket and work with Stuart McGill was especially useful. And, while he has not currently had a chance to work with Shane Warne – they hoped to do so on the last day in Perth but the rain intervened – he hopes that will be arranged soon.”I’ve had great experience playing with Hampshire,” he said. “I’ve played with some international players and I was lucky in the summer to be around the Test side for three games against West Indies. I’ve been to Australia and played a lot of Under-19 stuff. Warne’s the best ever so I want to pick his brains. I’ve had a couple of chats with him, but he’s not said anything about bowling yet.”But as a young player, playing Grade cricket was one of the best things I could do. I was away from home for six months on my own. I had to learn all sorts of stuff and it’s brilliant to play with different players. I’d encourage any young player to come out.”Crane dismissed the perception that English cricket is short of spin-bowling stocks, intimating that several other players in the early stages of their career have the potential to develop if given sufficient game time.”There are exciting spinners in England. I think we are all reasonably similar ages as well. It is exciting to see because there are some very good bowlers out there. A lot of people say there are no spin bowlers but they are out there, they just need the time to play.”It remains possible that Crane could gain that playing time in the Boxing Day Test. With Craig Overton unlikely to be considered having been diagnosed with a cracked rib, England could turn to either Crane or one of the seamers (probably Tom Curran or Mark Wood) with a final decision to be made only after a look at the pitch.”I’ll be ready to play,” he said with confidence. “Even if it was a series decider I’d be confident I could do a job. We’ve done all the analysis. I’ve got plans for each of their batsmen.”He has a plan for Smith? “Give him a single!” he replied with a smile.Crane’s inclusion would, however, leave England with a No. 9 – his likely spot in the batting order – with a top first-class score of just 29. He has worked hard on his batting and it has clearly improved. But asking him to hang around against this attack is probably unreasonable at this stage. While it remains possible that Wood or Curran could come in for Stuart Broad, the England management have played down the extent of Broad’s knee problem and it would be a major decision to drop such an experienced player. He has bowled better than his series average suggests, too.England did not train on Friday. Reasoning that, at this stage of the series, their aches and pains – psychological as much as physical – might be better treated by rest, they were given another day to spend with their friends and families. Training resumes on Saturday.
