Man United Set For Talks With "World Class" £154m Star

Manchester United are set for talks with the entourage of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Which striker will Man United sign?

Erik ten Hag is determined to bolster his squad with a world-class striker this summer, and Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with Man United recently urging the England captain to hand in a transfer request.

The United hierarchy are ready to walk away from the deal due to difficulty negotiating with chairman Daniel Levy, so they could soon their attentions elsewhere, with journalist Dean Jones detailing that two forwards could be signed this summer.

Rasmus Hojlund is one potential option for the Red Devils, with Ten Hag still keen on the Atalanta forward, while they have also registered their interest in fellow Serie A striker Lautaro Martinez, who is expected to leave Inter Milan this summer.

Another striker who has been impressing in Italy is Osimhen, and Tavolieri has now taken to Twitter to claim Man United have a meeting planned with the entourage of the Napoli striker, however, they are not the only Premier League club interested.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool are also set to speak to the Nigerian, whose priority is to seal a move to the Premier League this summer.

How many goals has Victor Osimhen scored?

The 24-year-old found the back of the net 26 times in the Serie A last season, the highest number of any player, despite playing six fewer games than Martinez, who United are also interested in signing.

It was a fantastic season for the Nigeria international, who has been hailed as "world-class" by members of the media, meaning he will not come cheap, with some outlets reporting Napoli could demand as much as €180m (£154m) to sanction his departure.

Despite his fantastic 2022-23 campaign, that amount would be far too much for the Napoli star, so United's main aim should be to agree on a lower fee, after hopefully making progress on personal terms in the upcoming meeting.

With the Lagos-born forward contracted until 2025, his current employers are in a strong negotiating position, and it may be worthwhile moving on to other targets, if they are unwilling to budge on their asking price.

A move for Kane is not completely out of the question, and the 29-year-old would almost guarantee goals, having scored 30 Premier League goals in a Tottenham side that underperformed last season.

Mathews to remain SL captain till 2019 World Cup

Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala announced that Angelo Mathews would remain Sri Lanka’s captain until the 2019 World Cup in England

Sri Lanka Cricket and Sanath Jayasuriya, the head of the national selection committee, have backed captain Angelo Mathews after SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala announced that he would remain captain until the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The decision came despite criticism following Sri Lanka’s recent 3-0 Test series defeat in South Africa.Addressing a media conference on Wednesday, Sumathipala confirmed that the opinion of his administration was shared by Jayasuriya and the rest of the selection committee.SLC and the selectors had a post-series review with Mathews, coach Graham Ford and manager Ranjith Fernando soon after the Test losses, to discuss their preparations for the T20I and ODI series against South Africa, which start from January 20.Sumathipala also denied rumours that Mathews’ captaincy was discussed, and stated that he remained the most suitable candidate to lead Sri Lanka at the 2019 World Cup in England.”Mathews too, must understand this responsibility and should work to rebuild the team,” Sumathipala said. “We hope that the South African pitches for the T20I and ODI series will be more familiar to our players.”Sumathipala praised the Sri Lanka pace attack, especially Lahiru Kumara, who bowled consistently at close to 145kph throughout the series. “We have selected the best 11 out of 20. If we are afraid of losing, we will not learn to win. It is quite pathetic to accept that we could not go beyond the 150-mark in three innings. We not only failed in the batting, but we missed some crucial catches where we could have put pressure on the South African batting.”The truth is that we were not capable of facing the pace and bounce. We have to find a solution to this. We are quite satisfied with coach Graham Ford’s service. Instead of pointing fingers at people, we have to re-unite to get the team on a winning path,” Sumathipala said.Jayasuriya said it was not surprising that Sri Lanka lost to South Africa on their fast pitches. “We had included a bunch of young cricketers to South Africa, thinking about the future of the national team,” Jayasuriya said. “They need time to mould. So we have to accept the loss. We have just begun.”As the Sri Lanka team is full of young blood, it is not a surprise that they faced a setback in South Africa. Even though we have given them the best squad, things did not turn out as we thought. We wanted one of the top-four batsmen to play a long innings and score a hundred. At least two or three batsmen should have played a long innings. But it did not work,” Jayasuriya explained. He added that the blame should not go to the captain for the loss. “This is not a time to blame and destroy Mathews’ captaincy. This is a time when we have to strengthen Mathews,” Jayasuriya said. “As a former captain I know how these allegations can badly affect Mathews’ morale, especially during a series. We have to support Mathews, correct our faults and face the T20I and ODI series’ with confidence.”

Sayers, Richardson pin down WA on green track

Chadd Sayers and Kane Richardson prospered with the Dukes ball on a green pitch before Jake Lehmann and Alex Ross helped South Australia close within sight of Western Australia’s first innings on day on of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.Richardson and Sayers both gained useful movement through the air and off the pitch to confound the WA batsmen, and, in the end, the visitors were fortunate to pass 200, thanks largely to a determined effort from the wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who made his Sheffield Shied debut.Sayers, who spent much of the summer as 12th man for the Australian Test side, saved his best ball for Adam Voges, a nip-backer that burst clean through the defences of the Warriors captain.Simon Mackin grabbed a pair of early wickets for WA to unsettle South Australia’s reply, before Callum Ferguson was run out. Lehmann and Ross responded with a volley of aggressive strokes to eat into the deficit, but Mackin was able to stop the stand shortly before stumps were drawn.

Jurgen Klopp Personally A Huge Fan Of £54k-A-Week Liverpool Target

Liverpool are still interested in signing Juventus winger Federico Chiesa this summer, a new transfer rumour from Italy has claimed.

Are Liverpool linked with Chiesa?

It is no secret that the Reds are in the market for a number of midfielders this summer, with Alexis Mac Allister hopefully the first of several to come in, and with the likes of Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, Ryan Gravenbarch and Dominik Szoboszlai all seemingly in the conversation.

Szoboszlai in particular seems likely to sign, with a report from Melissa Reddy on Friday detailing that the player is keen to join and the Reds are "pressing" to get a deal done.

While that appears to be Liverpool's primary area of focus, that's not to say that other additions won't come in, too, with a new centre-back potentially on the cards. Another attacker also isn't out of the question, with the departure of the legendary Roberto Firmino opening up a space in the squad.

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield recently is Chiesa, whose future at Juventus is up in the air, with his current deal expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season. It is a rumour that is refusing to go away, suggesting that the transfer could be a genuine possibility.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Liverpool have "expressions of interest" in the £54,000-a-week Chiesa this summer, with the Reds having "the charm of the history club on their side".

The report also adds that Jurgen Klopp personally "greatly respects" the 41-cap and four-goal Italy international, and he could "offer him the chance of playing as an advanced winger".

Chiesa is a fantastic player who could be such an eye-catching signing for Liverpool, given the blistering pace and directness that he possesses out wide, helping him register 42 goal contributions (22 goals and 20 assists) in 94 appearances for Juve.

There is an argument to say that a new forward isn't needed this summer, however, with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo already battling for regular minutes.

It is hard to see how Klopp would be able to keep six top-class options happy, and at the same time, for the club to be able to afford both Chiesa and more midfielders.

Should Liverpool have a genuine chance of signing Chiesa they should certainly consider it – he has been hailed as "unpredictable" by Antonio Di Natale and "one of the most exciting players around" by journalist Josh Bunting – but only if it is financially viable, and it won't affect the rest of their summer transfer business.

Tottenham Could Rekindle Interest In £10m "Phenomenon"

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to revive their interest in Roma star, Paulo Dybala, with the World Cup-winning gem potentially in line for an exit from the Italian outfit this summer.

What are the latest Tottenham transfer rumours?

According to Correire dello Sport – via Sports Witness – the Lilywhites, as well as both Chelsea and Manchester United, are believed to be following the 29-year-old 'with great attention', amid the uncertainty regarding his long-term future at the Stadio Olimpico.

As per the report, despite having only signed for the Serie A outfit on a free transfer from rivals Juventus last term, the 38-cap Argentina international could be on his way ahead of next season, with his current deal including a bargain €12m (£10m) release clause that can be triggered by foreign clubs.

That minimal fee has evidently caught the interest of the north Londoners who have long held an interest in the 5 foot 10 playmaker, having attempted to sign the one-time Palermo man back in the summer of 2019.

How good is Paulo Dybala?

Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho – who is now in charge of the Rome giants – will no doubt be ruing the presence of that buy-out clause in Dybala's contract, with the experienced ace having established himself as a leading figure for I Giallorossi during his debut season at the club last time out.

The left-footed dynamo did have his struggles with injury during the 2022/23 campaign, although was still able to rack up 18 goals and eight assists in 38 games in all competitions, leading the charge to the Europa League final with five goals in 11 games in that continental competition.

That standout form led Roma legend Francesco Totti to hail the marksman as "special" as well as describing him as a "phenomenon", with the club evidently keen to ensure that their prize asset does not seek to secure a swift exit over the coming weeks.

James Maddison for Leicester City

As for Spurs, the signing of Dybala could represent a perfect deal for manager Ange Postecoglou, with the £116k-per-week ace said to share a number of stylistic and statistical similarities with the club's recent summer signing, James Maddison – according to FBref.

That likeness between the Argentine and Maddison – who contributed ten goals and nine assists in the Premier League last term – is apparent due to their creative brilliance, with Dybala ranking in the top 7% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions, while the Englishman ranks in the top 13% in that regard.

In Serie A last term, Mourinho's main man notably created 12 big chances and averaged 2.1 key passes per game from his 25 league appearances as a sign of ability to provide quality service to the front line, with Maddison enjoying a remarkable similar record after also creating 12 big chances from his 30 league outings, while averaging 2.3 key passes per game.

Although Dybala has typically been deployed as a second striker of late, there may be a desire for Postecoglou to utilise his talents in an advanced midfield berth in his preferred 4-3-3 system, with the former Leicester City ace taking on that other playmaking role in the centre of the park.

To have two real dynamic weapons at his disposal would be a mouthwatering prospect for the ex-Celtic boss, with it seemingly hard to turn down the chance to land such a classy and experienced figure on the cheap.

Law sets sights on West Indies' World Cup qualification

With the deadline for direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup on September 30, and with that luxury given only to the top eight teams including hosts England, West Indies who are at No. 9, are in a precarious position

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Mar-2017The new West Indies coach Stuart Law has said his main aim is to make sure the team qualifies directly for the 2019 World Cup.Currently ranked No. 9 by the ICC, West Indies have to improve their position by at least one spot before the September 30 deadline. The top eight ODI sides, including hosts England, on the cut-off date gain automatic entry into the showpiece event while the bottom four will have to go through the rigours of a qualifying competition, where ten contenders fight for only two spots.West Indies’ quest begins with the first of three ODIs at home against England on March 3. Then they take on their nearest competition on the rankings table – Pakistan at No. 8 – in April over three matches, which could prove decisive to which of the two teams end up in the top eight. West Indies also have the cushion of five more 50-over matches against England in the UK before September 30. While winning as much as possible would be the priority of any international cricket team, Law knows it is especially important for his.”The main aim is to qualify for the next World Cup, the 50-over World Cup, so these one-day games are extremely important to us,” he said. “So that’s our main focus really at this stage. I know we have Pakistan coming for T20s, Tests and one-dayers as well but the one-day series probably will take paramount importance.”There is considerable disappointment in West Indies at missing out on the Champions Trophy. They had won the tournament in 2004 but now, for the first time ever, they will not be part of it. Several issues – prominent among them the spat between the WICB and their biggest match-winners – have meant the one-day team, unlike its counterpart in T20s, is rarely at full strength. These concerns, however, are being addressed with the help of Jimmy Adams, the former captain and the new director of cricket in West Indies.”It’s a great little tournament, the Champions Trophy, the mini World Cup and to not be there probably isn’t where you want to be,” Law said. “You want to be in every single one of those tournaments but it is what it is. We’ve just got to make sure we have our heads screwed on for the one-day tournaments we play in upcoming tours and if we can win those, we can get through to qualify for the World Cup. That’s probably the bigger one to worry about.”Law is confident of the men under his charge – “We’ve got power. We’ve got extreme power. Match that with a bit of technique as well, we’re looking pretty good.” – and that helps because he is only into his second month on the job and there are other challenges to navigate as well.”For me, it’s about seeing how it all operates,” Law said “Learning the different cultures from the different islands and how to address people and how to get the best out of the young kids is probably the most important thing for me now. I’m not going to focus on becoming No. 1 in the world at this stage. I’m focusing on building a culture, building a work ethic in the dressing room that will put the little brick in place so that they can become the best they can be.”

West Ham Desperate To Sign New £15.4m-Rated Midfielder

West Ham United are determined to land Denis Zakaria this summer and have pushed to get a deal done, according to a report from Calciomercato l'Originale, via Juventus News 24.

How many games did Denis Zakaria play in last season?

The midfielder spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Chelsea in the Premier League, but was given only seven games to prove his worth in the top flight under Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard. Even worse for the 26-year-old is that only five of those came as starts – meaning that he had just 411 minutes of playing time with the Blues during his stint there.

He therefore wasn't able to regularly showcase what he is capable of, having also struggled to get gametime with parent club Juventus. Since joining the Serie A giants, he has played just eleven league games for them too, at a total of just 720 minutes.

Zakaria though really shone during his time in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach, He twice featured in the top ten pass completion leaderboard for the club and ranked eighth in the entire Bundesliga for the amount of blocks he produced back in the 2017/18 season. He can produce the goods in the centre of the field then – he just hasn't been able to show it recently.

Now though, he may have the opportunity to land another move and get that chance. According to a report from Calciomercato l'Originale, via Juventus News 24, Gianluca Di Marzio believes West Ham are still very eager to sign Zakaria and have actually pushed for a transfer "in the last few hours."

There is no mention of an official bid or formal approach, but it seems as though the Hammers are now really desperate to try and land the midfielder this summer – and want to try and get a deal done sooner rather than later.

A transfer could be possible too, with the report adding that he isn't an essential part of Massimiliano Allegri's plans at Juventus. That suggests he could be sold at the right price – and if West Ham stump up the funds then, a deal could get over the line.

What is Denis Zakaria worth?

It's unclear how much a potential transfer for Zakaria may cost, but Transfermarkt suggest that his value could be around the 18 million Euros (or £15.4m) mark. It's not a large fee for the Hammers to pay should he actually cost that much, and it could be worth a gamble considering his experience and potential ability on the field should he be able to feature frequently.

He's clearly got some talent in his locker despite his lack of gametime too – journalist Josh Bunting stated that the midfielder was "powerful" at Chelsea in terms of "winning the ball back" and it showcases how much of a presence he can be in the centre of the field.

On his day then, the current Juventus man could be a real asset for a club – and if West Ham snap him up and play him regularly, they could therefore reap the rewards.
