'Bairstow was batting on a different wicket' – Cook

Jonny Bairstow looked as if he were “playing on a different wicket” to everyone else in the first Investec Test according to England captain, Alastair Cook.

George Dobell at Headingley22-May-2016Jonny Bairstow looked as if he were “playing on a different wicket” to everyone else in the first Investec Test according to England captain, Alastair Cook.Bairstow, who became the first England keeper to take nine catches and score a century in a Test, was named man of the match for what Cook hailed as his “extraordinary” innings of 140 against Sri Lanka. Only four other men reached 20 in the entire match. But Cook was not surprised by Bairstow’s dominance. He said after the victory that he had believed Bairstow would represent England from the first time he saw him play and that, over the last couple of years, he had developed into the best batsman in the county game.”I remember watching him play in Scarborough; one of the first times I saw him play,” Cook said. “He played differently to everyone else. We couldn’t stop him scoring. I thought he would play for England the first time I saw him.”But, like everyone, he took some time to find out what exactly he had to do in international cricket. But, over the last two years there hasn’t been a better batsman in England.”Here Jonny was playing on a different wicket to the other 21 guys. It was an extraordinary innings.”That Scarborough match occurred in 2010. While Bairstow did not top-score – he made 62 for Yorkshire against Cook’s Essex side – he was only 20 at the time and the performance has clearly stuck in Cook’s mind.Certainly Bairstow has been in outstanding form of late. He averaged 92.33 in the 2015 County Championship and, before this game, had scored 246 and 198 at Headingley in first-class matches this season. But Cook believes that it was Bairstow’s match-winning contribution in an ODI in Durham that gave him the confidence to know he could succeed in international cricket. That innings, an unbeaten 83 from 60 deliveries against New Zealand last June, helped England recover from 45 for 5 to win by three wickets with an over to spare.”Ever since that ODI innings at Durham he realised he can play international cricket,” Cook said. “He can be the talent we all knew he could be.”Scoring a hundred at Headingley must have been really special for him and he has kept really well, which is the other part of his job. I’m really happy for him.”

Liverpool Could Have TAA 2.0 In Teen With "Bags of Skill"

There are few Liverpool players who can confidently hold their heads high after such a dismal and inexplicably discordant campaign.

Goalkeeper Alisson has been manager Jurgen Klopp's shining light, exuding authority and demonstrating his world-class credentials as his backline has so often flattered to deceive, shirking away from their defensive duties and failing to offer any scrap of organisation. In fact, the Reds boss was full of praise for his No 1 ahead of yesterday's clash with Brentford.

The late-season upswing in form has certainly boosted optimism around Anfield, but even though their impressive form in the Premier League might not be enough to salvage a top-four place, with a score of contracts set for expiry in a matter of months, new signings are undoubtedly imminent.

Despite this, Klopp must delve into his youth ranks and look to blend any acquisitions with options already on the books; the eccentric German need only look at the success of Stefan Bajcetic this season as a reminder of the fortunes that can be reaped by doing so.

Forward Ben Doak is arguably the highlight name at Kirkby, but midfielder Bobby Clark offers just as much potential and could well find himself a prominent figure in the top flight over the coming years.

Who is Bobby Clark?

In 2021, Liverpool signed Clark from boyhood club Newcastle United for their development side; the Chronicle's lead Newcastle United journalist Lee Ryder – speaking to Liverpool Echo via the Blood Red Club Podcast – remarked upon the pathos surrounding the agreement to let the precocious talent leave Tyneside.

He said: "Bobby was Newcastle's most promising youngster.

"He is a really exciting player with bags of skill and talent. He could have lit up the stage at St James' Park but now he has gone to Liverpool and that is a real kick in the teeth."

As the 2022/23 campaign draws to a close, Clark has played copious amounts of football – featuring 32 times for the U21s, scoring two goals and providing four assists – and set himself in stellar stead for further shots at the first team next term, having featured from the bench against Bournemouth in the Premier League and from the start against Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

Hailed as "confident" by Goal's Neil Jones, the former Toon talent was prolific as they come at U18 level, clinching 13 goals and five assists from 27 matches in midfield, and with such innate prowess and a staggeringly high ceiling, he could well be the Reds' next Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While the 24-year-old is technically a right-back, he is one of the most devastating creative forces in football, scoring 15 goals and serving up 71 assists from 269 appearances for Klopp's side, and is valued at £61m by CIES Football Observatory.

If Klopp can harness the skills of yet another prospect with a glinting cutting edge, he could well find that Liverpool's next big thing in midfield already resides within the ranks.

With such confidence in this young man's skill set, Clark truly could emulate the success of Alexander-Arnold and become Liverpool's next big talent to stem from the youth ranks.

Rashid and Bresnan fight back to show the White Rose retains its thorn

Adil Rashid and Tim Bresnan fought back with the bat after a fierce new-ball onslaught from Kyle Jarvis, as the 256th Roses match started with a bang

Emboldened a trifle by their side’s position at the top of the Division One table, Lancashire’s travelling supporters had reasons for disquieting optimism as they made their way across the Pennines for the 256th Roses match. “Oh are we bound for glory, borne on a little fortune’s wave?” they might have trilled with the peerless Nancy Kerr, before adding that note of protective pessimism: “Or are we bound for some dark town and some grave northern story?”For well over an hour on the first day of this game it seemed that those loyalists from the Rossendale valley were destined for glory without trammel. Fine new-ball bowling by Kyle Jarvis and sharp slip catching by Karl Brown and Tom Smith had left Yorkshire miserably placed on 29 for 4 in the 14th over and the very limited recovery achieved by Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid was snuffed out half an hour before lunch when a shuffling Gale was lbw to a full length ball from Neil Wagner. This, though, is Yorkshire and they are not champions for nowt. And Headingley is, in the proudest possible way, a ground where they do not like you to forget it, particularly during a Roses match. More significantly, of course, Gale’s team is one which managed to win the 2015 Division One title by 68 points without ever batting at their best. Instead, they perforce relied on a series of spectacular recoveries, and the fact that many of them involved Jonny Bairstow has not blunted Yorkshire’s capacity to fight back. Bairstow may be with England but Yorkshire’s resilience burns wonderfully brightly without him.So it was barely a surprise that Rashid and Tim Bresnan took their side’s total from 74 to 210 before the sixth wicket fell when Rashid drove Simon Kerrigan to Luke Procter at short cover and trooped off 12 short of what would have been his third century against Lancashire. What was even more encouraging was that Rashid and Bresnan’s bristling partnership was followed in the last hour of the day by a fine stand of 75 for the ninth wicket between Steve Patterson, who is 41 not out, and Andrew Hodd, who received his Yorkshire cap early in the day and fell in its last over, when he turned Wagner to Liam Livingstone at backward short leg and departed for 40.Despite that late reverse, the Headingley spectators could return to their homes in Pudsey and Bingley, in Morley and Cleckheaton, knowing that they had seen their team finish the day on even terms. That was a distant summit late in the morning session.Yet this was a splendid day on which Lancashire supporters could also be proud, particularly, perhaps, of Jarvis who finished the day with figures of 4 for 74 and is now the leading wicket-taker in Division One with 28 scalps. Following Tom Bailey’s dismissal of Adam Lyth with the fourth ball of the match, Jarvis took three for 24 in a nine-over spell and there was really not very much either Gary Ballance or Jack Leaning could do about the balls which defeated their defensive shots and took the outside edge. Like Ballance, Alex Lees made nought and he may look back on his loose shot outside the off stump with rather less phlegm. The afternoon session was the property of Rashid and Bresnan, who added 107 in 34 overs during which they drew the sting of Lancashire’s attack, a particularly fine achievement on a pitch offering uneven bounce. Wagner tried to compensate for his lack of impact with an overuse of the bouncer and he looks so much less formidable a customer when his bumpers become outlets for frustration rather than targeted weapons. The Yorkshire crowd enjoyed it all hugely, of course, and offered frank assessments, not all of them complimentary, of the South African’s capabilities.Rashid, compact and skilful, drove and cut effectively; Bresnan launched his bat like a mighty scramasax at anything overpitched. Yorkshire fought their way out of trouble and the conversations among spectators reflected contentment. “Do we still spell it Maurice Leyland even though it’s Morris on his birth certificate?” asked someone. This is a county where they are putting up blue plaques to commemorate the birthplaces of their great cricketers. They will remember Rashid and Bresnan’s stand, too, especially, maybe, because it provoked such impotent wrath in Wagner. Every religion, especially a secular one, perhaps, needs its little devils.Lancashire fought back though, and Wagner will not be too unhappy with his final figures of 3 for 70. He dismissed Bresnan for 69 when another mighty drive could only inside-edge a catch behind and he then got rid of Hodd and celebrated joyously in the evening sunshine. One imagines he has enjoyed his first taste of a Roses match. As for Lancashire’s skipper, Steven Croft, he will be tired but not too despondent when he reviews the day. Pressed into service as a wicketkeeper after Alex Davies was ruled out with a knee injury, Croft pouched the catches which removed both Lyth and Bresnan and kept his men at their work. This game is beautifully poised. One wonders which side is bound for glory.

Man United Keeping Close Eye On "Unbelievable" £100k-p/w Star

Manchester United are now keeping a close eye on Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic for a summer transfer swoop, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

Which midfielders could Man United sign this summer?

Man United are on the lookout for a new central midfielder, with Fabrizio Romano recently claiming a new option in the engine room will be one of Erik ten Hag's priorities in the summer, and they are interested in signing West Ham captain Declan Rice.

However, the 24-year-old will not come cheap, with the same report claiming the Hammers are set to demand £120m, which means the Red Devils could look at other players, including Fulham's Joao Palhinha, as well as Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga.

According to a report from the Guardian, Chelsea are resigned to losing Kovacic this summer, with both Manchester clubs and Bayern Munich interested in his signature, and Football Insider have now provided a new update on United's pursuit.

Ten Hag is said to keeping a close eye on the £100k-per-week midfielder, with it now emerging that talks have broken down regarding a new contract at Stamford Bridge, despite the club's hierarchy being keen to tie him down to a new deal.

The Red Devils are following the situation, with the door now open for a move to Old Trafford, and they are keeping a close eye on whether a deal can be struck for the Croatian.

As the 29-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the Blues, his current club may be forced to reduce their asking price, to avoid losing him for free next summer.

Should Man United sign Mateo Kovacic?

The prospect of signing the Croatia international is unlikely to excite United fans as much as bringing in someone like Rice, but he has proven himself at Premier League level with Chelsea over a number of years, making 140 top flight appearances.

Hailed as "unbelievable" by members of the media, the maestro is a forward-thinking player, with a good eye for picking out his teammates, given that he ranks highly for progressive passes and passes attempted per 90 over the past year.

That said, the Austria-born midfielder is not the most prolific in front of goal, registering just three goal contributions in the league this season, while his defensive attributes also leave a lot to be desired.

Given that he is an experienced Premier League player, Kovacic could be a decent back-up option for Man United, but Ten Hag undoubtedly needs to bring in someone better to compete for a regular place in the starting XI.

Everton Eyeing Swoop For £108k-p/w Calvert-Lewin Partner

It is no secret that Everton have struggled in front of goal this season as they head into the final day of the Premier League with a chance of being relegated to the Championship.

Only Wolves and Southampton have scored fewer goals than the Toffees (33) in the English top-flight and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's lack of form in front of goal has played a big role in their struggles.

The England international has scored twice in 17 Premier League appearances this term and has been unable to provide Sean Dyche with a reliable option in the number nine position.

Between the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, Calvert-Lewin plundered 29 league goals for the club and this shows that the potential is there for the 26-year-old to be a prolific marksman at this level.

Dyche could unlock the best of the Englishman's abilities by signing him a strike partner this summer and Inter ace Joaquin Correa, a reported target for Everton, fits the bill.

Who is Joaquin Correa?

He is a 28-year-old forward who currently plays for Serie A side and Champions League finalists Inter as a supporting striker or winger.

The £108k-per-week dynamo has played the majority of his career as a second striker and this means that he can be deployed as a foil to a starting number nine, like Calvert-Lewin, in order to get the best out of his teammate.

Correa, who was once lauded as "formidable" by former boss Simone Inzaghi, has never been a prolific scorer – with ten goals in 76 appearances for Inter – but he does have the quality to help his team to create chances by progressing the ball up the pitch.

Inter forward Joaquin Correa.

The Argentina international ranks in the top 12% of players in his position in the Men's Big Five Leagues over the last 365 days for progressive passes, successful take-ons, and shot-creating actions per 90, with FBref listing none other than Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez as two statistically similar players.

He has the quality to commit defenders by dribbling past them and his progressive passing creates opportunities for others to either shoot or then find another player in a good position in the final third.

These statistics suggest that Correa's presence slightly behind Calvert-Lewin could allow the England international to thrive as the Argentine wizard's actions on the ball result in more chances being created, indirectly or directly.

This could lead to the ex-Sheffield United forward being handed more opportunities to score in front of goal, something that would be huge as the striker bids to return to the sort of level that we've seen from him previously in the Premier League.

Correa, who has scored 64 club career goals, could also take some of the goalscoring pressure off the Toffees striker. That would undoubtedly lift a rather large mental weight from Calvert-Lewin's shoulders and increase his chances of returning to his best.

Gloucestershire spinners take them top

First met second in this top of the South Group clash in the Natwest T20 Blast in Cardiff, and it was Gloucestershire who secured victory against Glamorgan to become leaders

First met second in this top of the South Group clash in the Natwest T20 Blast in Cardiff, and it was Gloucestershire who secured victory against Glamorgan to become leaders. Going into this game the teams were level on points with only net run-rate separating them.Wickets for Graeme van Buuren and tight bowling from Benny Howell and Tom Smith restricted Glamorgan to 119 for 6. It was never enough runs to defend and an unbeaten stand of 97 between Michael Klinger and Ian Cockbain took Gloucestershire home. Both men reached fifty as they secured victory with 23 balls to spare.A slow pitch with low bounce confronted the teams at Cardiff and it was surprising that Glamorgan chose to bat first on a pitch that was used for the match against Sussex on Thursday night. Right from the start of the home side’s innings the Gloucestershire bowlers were on top. A steady batting Powerplay took Glamorgan to 40 without loss but the introduction of spin bowling helped the visitors take control.Van Buuren took two wickets with his slow left-arm bowling in this first over, and they were the scalps of Glamorgan’s two in-form T20 batsmen. First David Lloyd looped the ball off a leading edge to Michael Klinger at mid-off and two balls later Colin Ingram was pinned lbw by a quicker delivery. From there the Glamorgan batsmen struggled to find any timing against some canny Gloucestershire bowling. It became clear very early on that pace off the ball was the way to go, and the Gloucestershire attack was perfectly suited to doing just that. Howell conceded just 13 runs from his four overs of medium pace and van Buuren finished with 3 for 19.It looked as if Glamorgan would fail to reach 100, but 32 from Graham Wagg, which included the only two sixes of the innings, helped them set a target of 120. Wagg scored 18 runs off the 20th over, bowled by Andrew Tye, to give his team a chance, albeit a slim one.A Glamorgan attack that featured the pace of Shaun Tait and Timm van der Gugten was far less equipped to cause real issues on this tired Cardiff pitch, and the extra pace allowed the Gloucestershire batsmen to time the ball with much greater ease than the opposition. The early wicket of Hamish Marshall, well caught down the leg side by Mark Wallace off van der Gugten, gave Glamorgan some hope but from there Gloucestershire cruised to victory. With a lack of slower bowling options available to him Rudolph brought himself on to bowl his part-time legspin for the first time in the T20 Blast this season in attempt to try something different. By then the run rate was down to four an over and there was no need for Gloucestershire to take any risks. This defeat is a setback for Glamorgan but they still have four matches left in this competition and are well placed to secure a quarter-final spot. For Gloucestershire one more win from their remaining two matches and they are mathematically certain of qualification for the knockout stages.
