Following Club León’s expulsion from the Club World Cup for failing to comply with FIFA’s multi-club ownership regulations, Nicolás Larcamón – now head coach of Necaxa – addressed the situation. The Argentine had secured León’s qualification to the international tournament during his tenure as their manager in 2023, when they defeated LAFC in the final of the Champions Cup.

"Both groups – the players and the people behind the scenes – truly deserved to live that World Cup experience," Larcamón said. "Unfortunately, on the administrative and legal side, the ruling couldn’t be overturned. And with the tournament so close, it’s heartbreaking. The players’ dreams, the fans’ hopes, all the people who had made reservations and were preparing to be there – it all ended like this. I feel for the supporters, the players, and all the workers who were part of that achievement."

Larcamón managed León for 50 matches, recording 22 wins, 12 draws, and 16 losses. He became a fan favorite during his time with the Esmeraldas.

León will miss out on the Club World Cup, a decision that didn’t sit well with Larcamón, the architect behind the team’s 2023 Champions Cup title. Now focused on Necaxa and their upcoming quarterfinal clash against Tigres, the Argentine coach still showed solidarity with his former team.

Necaxa’s coach also spoke about the matchup vs. Tigres.

“I’m proud of this team’s effort and resilience. We’ve proven we’re capable and are aiming to reach even greater heights. The next round will be a major challenge, but we’re ready,” he said.

Queensland miss out on Shield final in Tim Paine's final first-class match

Former Australia captain retires from first-class cricket after a tame draw as Queensland opener Bryce Street posted an unbeaten century

Alex Malcolm17-Mar-2023Despite an unbeaten century from opener Bryce Street, Queensland have missed out on the Sheffield Shield final following a draw with Tasmania in Tim Paine’s final first-class match at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The Bulls were set to miss out on the final regardless of the result after Victoria beat Western Australia and overtook Queensland on the table via bonus points having fallen an agonizing three runs short on day three. They were set an unlikely 432 runs to win on the final day after Tasmania captain Jordan Silk declared overnight following his unbeaten century on day three. The visitors made no real attempt to try and chase the required rate of 4.5 given the new ball still nipped and swung. Street batted steadily through the first two sessions to post his sixth first-class century striking striking 10 boundaries in his 102 not out from 215 balls. He shared a 57-run opening stand with Joe Burns who fell for 29 having been adjudged lbw Lawrence Neil-Smith. He had survived numerous similar shouts on height but despite the bounce and seam movement he was given out.Street was joined by Aryan Jain in just his second first-class match. The pair put on an unbeaten 127-run stand to steer the game to a tame draw. Jain posted his highest first-class score making 44 not out off 99 balls.Tasmania tried six bowlers without much luck including handing opener Tim Ward his first bowl in first-class cricket. The game was called off early as both teams agreed a result could not be reached.

Man Utd could now move for "outstanding" £84m striker instead of Osimhen

Manchester United could pursue a summer move for an “outstanding” striker this summer, who may be targeted instead of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, according to a report.

Osimhen transfer race hotting up

Last month, it was revealed Osimhen has a release clause of around £62m in his Napoli contract, which is set to become active in the summer, and the race for the Nigerian’s signature is now hotting up.

The Red Devils clearly hold an interest in the Galatasaray loanee, having submitted a verbal contract offer, but it appears they could be lagging behind in the transfer race, given that Premier League rivals Arsenal are said to have overtaken them.

In fact, it seems like the Gunners are making good progress in their pursuit of the 26-year-old, with a report claiming they have now agreed a £62m deal ahead of the summer, having informed Napoli they are willing to stump up the release clause.

As such, United may have to turn their attention to alternative targets, and a report from GiveMeSport has revealed they could instead pursue a move for FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, who may be more attainable.

Ruben Amorim is determined to sign a striker this summer, and the manager is scouring the market for potential targets, but a deal for the Porto star could prove to be very expensive.

FC Porto's SamuOmorodioncelebrates scoring their first goal

Aghehowa has a release clause of £84m in his Porto contract, which could make it difficult for United to get a deal done, should the Portuguese side insist on receiving the full amount.

Osimhen remains Amorim’s dream target, but a move for the 20-year-old could be one to watch, should Porto be willing to accept a lower fee.

"Outstanding" Aghehowa "has everything" to become a top striker

The Spaniard is still very young, but he could be capable of going on to establish himself as a top striker, if the high praise he has received from journalist Josh Bunting is anything to go by.

The starlet has been prolific in Portugal this season, scoring 14 league goals, while also bagging six goals in nine Europa League games, which could indicate he is ready for a big move to the Premier League.

That said, it may be very difficult for United to get a deal done this summer, should Porto insist on the release clause being paid in full, considering their financial problems, which were recently outlined by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Perhaps if United manage to offload some high-earning players this summer, they may be able to dip into the transfer market, but given the severity of their financial issues, it is difficult to see them shelling out £84m on Aghehowa.

'Coming from a place of accountability' – How the Black Lives Matter movement inspired analyst and ex-USMNT star Taylor Twellman to earn a degree 20 years after he left college

The former USMNT forward returned to Maryland to get a degree in American Studies after the racial strife of 2020

Taylor Twellman could hear the trash talk. It was 2020, and the former USMNT forward was sitting in his backyard, looking at a Zoom screen: camera off, sunglasses on. The video chat room was packed, hundreds of random faces and picture-less names, all waiting for a college professor to begin a lecture. Then, one of the students started talking. Their subject? How much he hated Twellman.

“He starts ripping me an absolute new one,” the former ESPN analyst recalled, “because of something I said on SportsCenter about Arsenal and their inability to win trophies in the big games.”

Twellman responded by turning his camera on and waving at his disgruntled peer. The student’s response? To go in even harder.

It was one of the stranger moments of Twellman’s return to college. Now an Apple TV commentator and announcer and former professional soccer player, Twellman left college after his freshman season. More than 20 years later, he returned to pursue a degree in American Studies. He could have chosen multiple paths, or gone into any number of fields, but Twellman, a suburban kid from St. Louis, said he felt uneducated on the political tumult in the United States.

In the wake of racial strife and growing momentum of Black Lives Matter following the murder of George Floyd in 2019, Twellman says that broadening his education was the perfect way to cut through social media toxicity and online vitriol. An issue once far away him felt present. It was time to learn.

“After the George Floyd incident, being at ESPN, being in the media world, being a suburban white kid, I realized how uneducated I was on a certain topic,” Twellman said. “So that's why I went directly into American Studies, because I figured if I'm actually going to do this as a 40-year-old, I might as well do something that's going to help me.”

IMAGN'I wanted to learn'

As an experienced broadcaster who had been in the media world for more than a decade, he didn't see much value at that point in pursuing a broadcast journalism or communications degree. Yet he had seen from afar the division caused by Floyd’s murder, and says he found himself on social media feeds full of opinions. He wanted to cut through and understand the roots of it all – and admit where he, as a white man, could learn.

“I wanted to learn, and it would make me better in the sense of having conversations, better in the sense of interviewing people, better in the sense of coming from a place of accountability, empathy, any word you want to use,” Twellman said.

And in a time of political and racial tension, he believed that a degree that could help him better understand the tumult of the times, which would benefit him not only as a person but also as an analyst. Being in sports media, Twellman wanted to more effectively connect with those he interviewed – regardless of background – and understand their perspectives. An expanded education, he believed, could help foster more understanding.

AdvertisementGetty'I'm grinding like I was graduating already'

Twellman had always been a good student athlete. His grades were solid throughout high school. He arrived at Maryland in 1998, and had other offers to play multiple sports at high-level universities. But the Terrapins presented him with an opportunity to play both soccer and baseball – although only the baseball program provided a scholarship.

Being a dual-sport athlete came with its challenges. It meant Twellman had to shoulder a heavy courseload early in his freshman year, taking 18 credits his first semester while also playing for the soccer team. It meant he was in classes from 8 a.m until 1 p.m., then in practice after that. There wasn’t much room to socialize.

“I was panicked about baseball season, traveling more than soccer… freshman year, I'm grinding like I was graduating already,” he said.

Still, when he left Maryland to sign a professional soccer contract, Twellman had three years of school to complete. And then the world took over: playing in MLS and for the USMNT, then ultimately broadcasting. Going back wasn’t something he had fully considered.

Getty'It was a confluence of events'

Then, in 2017, his thinking changed, buoyed by a call from Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski.

“When Maryland joined the Big Ten [Conference], they had identified a few of their former athletes who left with scholarships and offered to re-engage in finishing your degree. So it was great,” Twellman said.

At first, he didn’t know what to study. Twellman hadn't previously declared a major, and there weren’t any immediate passions. And then the world changed. He became an American Studies major and immersed himself in the kind of complex issues that have come to dominate the political and social landscape in America.

“It was a confluence of events, timing, where I was in my life," he says. "If you asked me 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have taken these classes."

He took classes about racial tensions. He learned more about global conflicts and geo-politics. Piece it all together, and that degree turned out to mean much more.

“I don't regret a single second, because I've learned things that I would have never learned," he said. "Taking, for instance, two classes on Israel and Hamas. I would have never learned that."

'I 100 percent was myself'

Of course, there were some lighter moments, too. Zoom classes could be awkward for everyone, and after his lighthearted banter with a few students, one kind professor agreed that it might be a good idea for Twellman to use his initials “TT” rather than his full name in large group settings.

In smaller discussion groups, though, Twellman had no problem showing his face and getting involved. In fact, he wanted to.

“When I got into smaller classes, I thought it was important, especially when you were talking in the media profession, or journalism world, I 100 percent was myself,” Twellman said.

Then last week it all came to fruition. It’s there on his Instagram, Twellman sitting in front of McKeldin Library, a picture thousands of Maryland graduates have taken over the years, cap and gown on: a 45-year-old, finishing college, and doing so for a cause he was committed to.

Ange must instantly drop 3/10 Spurs dud who lost the ball every 2 touches

Tottenham Hotspur are no closer to climbing back up the Premier League table after they were beaten 2-0 by London rivals Fulham on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side remain stuck in 13th place in the division, five points behind Crystal Palace in 12th, after goals from Rodrigo Muniz and former Spurs man Ryan Sessegnon secured all three points for the hosts.

The Lilywhites, as you can see in the clips above, did have chances to take the lead before the second-half strikes from the Fulham pair, as Dominic Solanke missed two big opportunities to find the back of the net.

Tottenham’s £55m signing from Bournemouth last summer failed to step up and put his team in front, which provided the Cottagers with the chance to go on and win the match – and they did.

Solanke was far from the only Spurs player who underperformed on the day against Fulham, however, as Yves Bissouma was hauled off the pitch at half-time after his struggles in the opening 45 minutes.

Spurs' poorest performers against Fulham

Postecoglou decided to go with the Mali international as part of his starting midfield three alongside Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur at Craven Cottage.

Unfortunately, however, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man did not justify his manager’s faith in him with a positive performance on the pitch against the Cottagers.

Instead, Bissouma struggled badly with his play in and out of possession in the opening 45 minutes before he was withdrawn from the action, to be replaced by Lucas Bergvall for the second half.

The central midfielder only completed 82% of his attempted passes in the first half, despite not attempting a single long pass or cross, and did not create a single chance for his teammates. This suggests that he was sloppy in possession without offering any threat to the Fulham goal.

As you can see in the table above, Bissouma also struggled out of possession throughout his time on the pitch for the Lilywhites, losing five of his seven physical duels.

He made more fouls than tackles and interceptions made combined, which speaks to how much of a liability the midfielder was off the ball, and his play at both ends of the pitch may have contributed to Postecoglou’s decision to take him off the pitch.

Chalkboard

The 28-year-old dud was not, however, the worst player on the pitch for Tottenham during that first-half display. Winger Brennan Johnson was also taken off after the first 45 minutes, after he put in an even worse performance than Bissouma at Craven Cottage.

Brennan Johnson's performance against Fulham

The Wales international was selected to start on the right side of the front three for Spurs, with Solanke down the middle and Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel on the left flank.

It was Johnson’s lack of fluidity in possession that ultimately cost him in the first half, though, as he failed to be effective with the ball at his feet for Tottenham on the wing.

The former Nottingham Forest man was substituted off at the break, with club captain Heung-min Son coming on in his place, after he was unable to cause many, if any, problems for Antonee Robinson.

Johnson ended the first half with zero shots attempted, zero crosses completed, zero long passes completed, and zero chances created for his teammates in his 45 minutes on the pitch. On that evidence, it’s hardly a surprise that he was handed a dismal 3/10 player rating by Football.London at full-time.

As you can see in the table above, the Welsh forward was completely ineffective at the top end of the pitch and incredibly loose with his passes, which gave Robinson a fairly easy afternoon.

Johnson also struggled to deal with the physicality of the Fulham players, losing four of his six duels, as he put in an even worse performance than Bissouma, who at least completed 82% of his passes and was not expected to make a difference in the final third.

Why Spurs should drop Brennan Johnson

Postecoglou must, now, ruthlessly bin the Welsh attacker from his starting line-up when Spurs are back in action against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after the international break, by bringing Son or Wilson Odobert back into the side.

Johnson has been in disappointing form of late for the North London outfit, with just two goals and zero assists in his last ten appearances against Premier League level or Europa League opposition.

Both of those goals came in a 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Ipswich Town, who were in League One two seasons ago, which means that the ex-Nottingham Forest man has failed to register a goal or an assist in any of the other nine outings.

The 23-year-old is not a dynamic winger who is likely to progress play with passes or dribbles to make things happen, but he does have excellent positioning and a good feel for when a chance will come his way.

As you can see in the table above, Johnson is exceptional at finding himself in high-quality goalscoring positions, yet leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to his use of the ball outside of his shooting opportunities.

He ranks incredibly lowly among his positional peers in the Premier League at progressing play and creating chances for his teammates, which was part of the issue with his performance against Fulham.

This is backed up by his return of just two assists, from 1.43 xA, in 26 appearances in the top-flight this season, which shows that he rarely provides his fellow attackers with chances to score.

When Johnson does not get the big chances to score in matches, the former Forest man does not offer much to the side on the right flank and that is why – amid this current dry spell in front of goal – Postecoglou should drop him from the starting line-up.

Joe Root hundred guides England on freewheeling first day of the Ashes

Hosts score at more than five an over before Ben Stokes springs surprise declaration

Matt Roller16-Jun-2023The first day of the 2023 Ashes started with Zak Crawley lacing Pat Cummins through cover for four, ended with Australia’s openers seeing out four overs following an opportunistic declaration, and hardly paused for breath in between.England had made clear that they would not change the approach that has brought them so much success in the last 12 months and hurtled towards 400 while scoring at five runs per over, looting 45 boundaries and playing out only two maidens all day. After three successive Ashes series without a hundred as captain, it was Joe Root who underpinned their innings. Several outlandish shots – he twice reverse-scooped sixes over the slip cordon – interspersed a high-tempo cruise and he played late, dabbing, flicking and punching singles out to boundary-riders.Related

Live Report: England vs Australia, 1st Test, Edgbaston

'Thumped on the up through cover-point!'

He brought up his hundred in 145 balls, clipping Nathan Lyon off his pads, then twice charged down to hit him back over his head for six in Lyon’s next over. With the second new ball approaching, Ben Stokes had seen enough and called his batters in to leave David Warner and Usman Khawaja 20 minutes to survive until the close. The Edgbaston crowd, who made themselves known to Australia’s boundary-riders throughout an unbridled opening day, became part of the theatre, teeing up Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson as they bounded in with the new ball. But both openers survived with few scares and will come back on Saturday hoping to set Australia on their way to a lead on a flat, slow pitch. It had long been clear that this Ashes would be played at a different tempo to any other, and the first ball of the series only served to reinforce that. Eighteen months ago in Brisbane, Mitchell Starc’s dismissal of Rory Burns set the tone for a tour defined by England’s dismal performances; here, Crawley crunched Cummins through the off side on the up.Cummins posted a deep backward point from the start, pre-empting England’s aggression and by the third over had three men on the rope. Their value was shown in the fourth: Ben Duckett only half-committed to a cut shot, with deep backward point nullifying his opportunity for a boundary, and edged Josh Hazlewood through to Alex Carey.Hazlewood’s inclusion for his first Test since January came as a surprise, with Mitchell Starc making way after playing in the World Test Championship final at The Oval last week. But he was the pick of Australia’s attack, finding some bounce on an unreceptive surface and finishing the day as their most economical bowler – even if he conceded more than four runs per over.Lyon came on early, introduced in the 10th over as though Cummins was dangling a carrot. He started with four men out, but Crawley was in no mood to milk singles, and thrashed the final ball of his first over for four through the covers. By drinks, he had lashed Scott Boland for two further boundaries.”Another 30 for Zak!” taunted an Australian fielder, picked up by the stump microphone, and Crawley’s innings should have ended before he had reached a half-century. He stepped across to the off side looking to whip Boland into the Eric Hollies Stand at midwicket and edged a lifter through to Alex Carey – but Australia did not appeal. He brought up his half-century off 56 balls, but had lost his partner just before. Ollie Pope, who settled into his innings after a frenetic start, lofted Lyon over mid-off but was trapped on the knee roll as he looked to whip across the line. Umpire Ahsan Raza initially gave him not out but ball-tracking confirmed the ball had pitched in line with leg stump.England ticked over throughout the session, taking an unprecedented 54 singles before lunch – yet Australia’s defensive fields were vindicated by three wickets in the first session, Crawley falling in the final over of the morning. He gloved behind as Boland found some extra bounce from a length, Australia successfully reviewing the on-field decision.Harry Brook, facing Australia for the first time in his career, counter-punched in the afternoon, lofting Lyon over cover from the eighth ball he faced. He cut and drove Boland for two boundaries in three balls, but nearly fell in the same over: he top-edged a short, wide ball which Travis Head initially failed to pick up at deep point, then dropped as he scampered in and dived forwards.England then lost two wickets in nine balls, leaving them 176 for 5. Brook’s dismissal was a freak: he shouldered arms to Lyon and the ball ballooned up off his thigh pad to a cry of “catch it”; Carey tried to but watched it land inside the crease and spin sharply back into middle stump. He caught the next one that came his way, an outside edge from Stokes as Hazlewood angled one across him. That brought Jonny Bairstow in for his first Test innings since September, and he survived a tight review for lbw off his first ball. But as Root cruised to a half-century without breaking sweat, Bairstow found his rhythm, slashing Cameron Green – who bowled only six overs in the day – over the off side.Root was given out on 61 but successfully overturned the lbw decision on review, having gloved the ball into his pad. It was the second of three successive reverse-sweeps he played off Lyon; the other two flew to the boundary.Bairstow played aggressor after tea as the partnership swelled past 100, but his dismissal for a run-a-ball 78 preceded a frantic passage of play. He and the returning Moeen Ali were both stumped off Lyon, charging down the pitch, before Broad lost his off stump to Green after hoicking a couple of fours.Root freed his arms after ticking past his hundred, a landmark that was met with a punch of the air and a standing ovation from around the ground. This was his first hundred against Australia in eight years, with a dozen unconverted half-centuries in between times, and the 30th of his Test career. There was enough time for him to take 20 runs off one Lyon over – along with Robinson, who reverse-swept him for four – before Stokes, wearing his bucket hat, gestured for the pair to come back in. There may never have been a day of Ashes cricket quite like it.

Chelsea are said to have laid “significant groundwork” over a deal for Liam Delap, and if all goes to plan, he could be signed from Ipswich Town before the CWC kicks off (Simon Phillips).

The tournament could yield £100 million for Chelsea if they manage to win it, leaving little wonder Stamford Bridge chiefs appear set to take it seriously.

A new striker of Delap’s ilk is just one of their many transfer goals for the summer, though. Despite their large backlog of goalkeepers, with Kepa Arrizabalaga out on loan at Bournemouth, Djordje Petrovic at Strasbourg and Mike Penders set to arrive from Genk in the summer, it is believed that they want another capable body in-between the sticks.

Petrovic has refused to rule out staying at Strasbourg next season, amid his very impressive spell in Ligue 1 on loan from Chelsea, so perhaps Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher could fill the Serbian’s spot.

The 26-year-old, rumoured to command a £40 million asking price moving into the next window, has seriously impressed as a very capable understudy to Alisson – leading to serious interest in his signature.

Chelsea "already" preparing £40m bid to sign Liverpool star Kelleher

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are “already” preparing a £40m bid for Kelleher, but it won’t be an “easy” negotiation for the west Londoners considering Arne Slot’s side view him as a solid squad player and understudy for Alisson.

The Irishman has showcased true match-saving quality when given the chance, and he’s arguably very unlucky that such a big-name currently sits ahead of him in the Liverpool pecking order.

Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher and Virgil van Dijk

During Alisson’s spell out through injury earlier this season, the Republic of Ireland international was an absolute revelation, with Virgil van Dijk calling him “world-class” and TNT Sports pundit Steve McManaman branding Kelleher a “superstar”.

“Look at the goalkeeper [Kelleher],” McManaman said.

“He’s a superstar, isn’t he? Caoimhin Kelleher.

“He played more games last year than Alisson because of injuries, he’s done exactly the same this year. If you have the quality behind you – Trent Alexander-Arnold went off today and Conor Bradley seamlessly comes in – if you’ve got that, great.”
