Tottenham’s predicted starting XI to face Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur will look to serve up another famous night in their new stadium when they host Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

It will be Spurs’ second Champions League group game of the season following their disappointing 2-2 draw against Olympiacos last month – they led 2-0 in Athens before being pegged back and returning to London with just the one point.

That result was followed up with poor performances against Leicester City and Colchester United – they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by the latter – although they did bounce back with a 2-1 win against Southampton at the weekend despite playing the majority of the encounter with 10 men.

Serge Aurier was the man to see red, but seeing as the suspension only applies to domestic games, will he make Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI tonight?

Here is our predicted Tottenham side…

Captain Hugo Lloris starts in goal despite his huge error against Saints on Saturday, where he gifted Danny Ings a goal having attempted a failed Cruyff Turn.

In defence, Pochettino sticks with Sissoko at right-back after the Frenchman filled in admirably there against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men following Aurier’s first-half dismissal, with the backline remaining the same aside from that with Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose all on the team-sheet.

We expect the Argentine to go with more of a 4-3-3 system with Christian Eriksen dropping back in Sissoko’s absence alongside Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks, who will be tasked with stopping the in-form Philippe Coutinho.

That means there is a spot for Lucas Moura in attack, and he certainly has the big-game Champions League pedigree following his brilliant hat-trick to take the north London outfit to the final against Ajax last term.

The Brazilian joins Son Heung-min and Harry Kane in attack, with the latter looking to add to the goal he netted against Southampton.

Man United prospect James Garner has received glowing endorsements

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Expert Roundup feature, which provides three quotes from those in the know in order to illuminate fundamental strengths, weaknesses, quirks, stylistic comparisons and general observations of players, transfer targets and confirmed signings.

As Manchester United embark on this new adventure involving their talented academy stars, the man leading the charge out of them all is Mason Greenwood. The teenager has caught the eye for the Red Devils with his performances in pre-season, and his goal-scoring start to the current campaign. Beneath him in pecking order, are the likes of Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams, amongst others. But one man (or rather boy) who could be even more important is James Garner.

The 18-year-old hasn’t burst onto the scene yet like Greenwood, but he has found himself on the fringes of the United squad for a number of weeks and months in his fledgling career.

A central midfielder by trade, his displays in the youth academy have considerably raised the excitement levels.

And according to the three experts, it’s no surprise to see why.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The man perhaps most important in how Garner’s career at Old Trafford develops, the United boss appears to be a big fan of the teenage starlet. The Red Devils haven’t had a midfield playmaker since the days of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, and have had to watch Paul Pogba effectively be shoehorned into that position despite it not being his favoured role.

In their academy prospect however, the Manchester side could finally have someone on their hands who looks comfortable sitting deep, and dictating the play.

Here’s what he had to say, per London Evening Standard.

Darren Fletcher

As Solskjaer’s side continue to struggle on the pitch, the big thing the club no doubt needs is its leaders to stand up and be counted.

United need more personality and characters on the pitch and, judging by Fletcher’s comments, Garner certainly has that. The latter has captained the Red Devils’ U18s to the Premier League North title, and also wore the armband at international level with England’s U17s at the European Championships.

Simply put, the first-team could do with a midfield general like Garner in their ranks.

This is what Fletcher had to say while speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via Goal):

The Secret Scout

Secret scout – very mysterious indeed. But what the analysis of the midfielder shows, per Daily Mail, is that Garner is someone who brings the best out of those around him, and not just himself.

United have seen the perils of having too many players who appear to be looking out for themselves on the pitch, and in the 18-year-old, have a player who looks to provide the heartbeat of the side. Keeping things ticking, always looking to receive possession and use it well, the Red Devils have been clamouring for the type of midfielder Garner represents.

Verdict

Amidst all the transfer talk that continues to surround Pogba, it seems almost inevitable the France World Cup winner will eventually be leaving Old Trafford in the near future. His public comments in the summer on wanting a “new challenge”, and his subsequent veiled remark of there being a “question mark” over his United career suggests his heart isn’t truly in it.

But in Garner, they have a homegrown product who embodies this new ethos United are looking to build – young, hungry and committed to the cause. No more mercenaries like Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez. Academy products who know what it means to play for the club, and are happy to fight for their chance to play.

But equally, the 18-year-old isn’t just some kid who’ll run around the pitch like a headless chicken for the sake of being United through and through.

His technical ability is there for all to see, and the high praise from the experts really suggests he has a bright future at the heart of the Red Devils’ midfield.

Newcastle fans slammed for under-appreciating Steve Bruce

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has hailed the work being carried out at Newcastle United by Steve Bruce, and has called on the St. James’ Park faithful to back the Toon boss as they have been under-appreciating his efforts in the dugout.

What’s he said?

Bruce has overseen nine fixtures across all competitions since his arrival on Tyneside this summer as the replacement for Rafa Benitez and has orchestrated victories over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among those.

A Newcastle fan calls for Sean and Matt Longstaff’s Mum to give birth to a starting eleven’s worth of Longstaffs in the video below…

But the Toon have also been beaten by Norwich City and Leicester City after underwhelming displays.

The inconsistent performances by the Magpies first-team have ensured that fans are yet to fully get on side with Bruce and his tactics.

Newcastle’s fans are the best in the country in the eyes of the former Arsenal striker, but Nicholas feels they are misplacing their frustrations by taking them out on Bruce and should instead support their boss.

Speaking with Sporting Life, he described Newcastle as his biggest disappointment of the campaign, saying:

“They started to love Rafael Benitez but Steve Bruce has started better and he does not have the same impact upon the fans. The most engrossing thing for me is how the Newcastle situation has played out. They have been awful in three of those games, but they have played well in the rest. They got a win at Tottenham and they got a win against Manchester United, but it is as if they are still unhappy.

“I don’t blame them for being unhappy with Mike Ashley, but they are one of the best sets of fans in England at getting behind their team, and even more so in backing their manager. Bruce added three players – this may not have been of any significance, but he has given it a good go thus far.

“The most intriguing thing is the disappointment surrounding Newcastle. Bruce is doing a very good job, but some are hoping he doesn’t. I never quite understand the animosity towards him. Somewhere along the line, they have to give their manager a pat-on-the-back.”

Bruce’s praise will come

While Bruce’s role in Newcastle’s victories over Manchester United and Tottenham should be lauded, the Toon boss’ praise will be on ice until he can manage to organise more favourable performances against the sides the Magpies have a more realistic expectation of competing against.

Newcastle’s performance at home to Brighton in a 0-0 draw will be remembered for a long time until the Toon start to perform better, more often, and against that level of competition, as supporters will not gladly sing the name of a manager who is in charge of a team that allowed an opponent that finished 17th in the league last season to enjoy 71% of possession in their own back yard, per WhoScored.

United’s 28.7% of the ball at home to the Seagulls was only marginally below their season average, as well, with Newcastle enjoying just 37.5% per game so far this season, which is the lowest in the Premier League.

The Magpies are not creating chances, either, as a result of their lack of time in possession, with the only winless side in the league, Watford, joining Bruce’s Toon at the bottom of the shots per game chart with an average of 9.5.

Until these stats improve, Nicholas won’t be getting his wish.

Arsenal’s former skipper Nacho Monreal had no hesitation in joining the Gunners

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal has said that he did not need to think twice about joining Arsenal in 2013.

What’s the word?

Monreal, 33, departed the club last summer after agreeing to move to Real Sociedad after six and a half seasons at the Emirates.

The Spaniard told Mundo Deportivo (via football.london) how his move to Arsenal happened and how he struggled during the first 12 months.

“Yes, no doubt (I was right to join Arsenal). I was very happy in Malaga. But the club had financial needs and problems with the sheikh. I was the third to go after (Santi) Cazorla and (Salomon) Rondon.

“Besides, when Arsenal calls, you don’t think about it. I said yes immediately.

In the video below, we look at where it all went wrong for Arsenal’s former ‘saviour’, Mesut Ozil…

“The beginning was difficult. I was very shy; a new country, a new language, new culture, players I didn’t know. It became very hard. I suffered for the first 12 months.

“But I acclimatised to the city, the club and English football and my memories are wonderful. Even being captain of Arsenal. A pride.”

Underappreciated

Within a side that boasted the likes of prime Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, Monreal found himself to be the polar opposite of those names as an unspectacular, no-frills defender that got through games with just hard work and determination.

Former Arsenal legend Ian Wright branded the Spaniard as a “total professional” and someone who always gave 100% during matches.

Monreal was always on the left side on the back four and was well known for operating as a wing-back with his efforts going forward. His best season came during the 2017/18 campaign, with five goals and two assists in the Premier League.

This was accompanied by impressive attacking stats with 0.8 shots per game and 0.5 key passes on average. For a left-back, this illustrates his underappreciated contributions.

The Spaniard was equally as impressive defensively, Monreal accumulated an average of 2.2 aerial duels won, 1.9 tackles and two interceptions per match in that fantastic 17/18 season.

His commanding presence and his capabilities at the back saw him take the captain’s armband and demand more of a leadership role, as he told the club’s official website.

The gap that Monreal left was quickly filled with the arrival of Kieran Tierney from Celtic, but his latest comments are just another reminder of the kind of player he was for the club, perhaps under-appreciated considering his passion for the badge and exploits on the pitch.

Real Madrid’s Isco should leave the club in order to revive his career

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Isco is one of those Real Madrid players that is slowly but surely fading into obscurity.

The now 27-year-old Spaniard no longer enjoys a major role in the club but according to AS, some big Premier League fish, such as Manchester City and Arsenal, are extremely interested in his services.

What’s the word, then?

Life didn’t use to be so harsh for Isco in the Spanish capital.

A couple of years back, he was one of the most important players Real Madrid had in their squad. After all, we’re talking about a former star who started in ten out of 12 Champions League clashes and 21 La Liga games just two seasons ago and then abruptly faded into the background.

Of course, injuries did play their part as he has already missed a total of six games in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign and was absent for ten in 2018/19 due to various different issues.

By all accounts, luck hasn’t been on his side for a while but if the reports from AS are true, and Isco wants to reignite his career in order to be ready for the national team’s ventures, he should make the most out of Manchester City and Arsenal’s interest.

AS claim that both Pep Guardiola and Unai Emery are really fond of the Spaniard and, if that proves to be true, this could be huge for the 27-year-old and he shouldn’t let this opportunity pass him by.

A new beginning

Not many players in modern football are lucky enough to get second chances.

Even though Isco is still a well-known name within the Real Madrid squad, the fact that he is no longer a key part of the team definitely doesn’t look good on his resume.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

But the reported interest from the likes of Guardiola and Emery is exactly what the good doctor had prescribed and what his career is currently missing.

It could reinstall that long-forgotten spark that he used to carry in his performances.

AS mention that the Galacticos are keen on letting certain players go in order to land some other major targets but that is definitely good news for the Spaniard – his club seemingly won’t stand in his way.

From his point of view, and from Real Madrid’s as well, this is a no-brainer.

Not to mention that these opportunities often don’t come knocking twice.

Man City fans destroy Nicolas Otamendi after his positive injury update

Manchester City fans have slated Nicolas Otamendi after the centre-back gave a positive injury update following the Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Otamendi missed City’s win over Crystal Palace but returned to action in a late appearance against Atalanta.

The Argentine told the club: “After the international break I tried to recover from the pain I had on my back. I had a small injury after playing Everton. Then I had to stop to recover, but now I’m available.”

The 31-year-old has taken a lot of stick this season as his form has been an issue in the wake of Aymeric Laporte’s injury. Most recently, the defender was bashed for his horror show against Norwich City, where he was responsible for Teemu Pukki’s gift of a goal in the 3-2 loss.

It does seem as if fans have not forgiven Otamendi for his mistakes over the past couple of months and are not ready for him to take a spot back in the starting XI. Despite injuries proving to be a problem, City fans would rather see someone else at the back with one supporter jokingly asking for Raheem Sterling instead.

Of late, Fernandinho and Rodri have occupied the centre-back slots, but the latter suffered a hamstring injury against Atalanta, which may force Otamendi into the team sooner than fans would like.

Another supporter has labelled him a “liability”.

Here’s what a select few have had to say…

Leeds fans don’t want Samu Saiz back at the club

Leeds United fans on Twitter have turned their noses up at the idea of Samu Saiz returning to the club.Fan account @AllLeedsHQ asked the supporters whether or not they’d want to see the Spaniard return to the club, and the response was resounding.Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It’s not surprising that the Elland Road don’t want to see Saiz back at Elland Road due to the fact that he left the club on poor terms as one fan claimed that he sulked when he wasn’t picked.

Before he departed, he had a number of complaints about living in England and he was subsequentlyÂsent back to Spain.

Some United supporters on social media simply don’t believe he’s talented enough to get into the team anymore.

One called him a bang average player, while another simply reminded the person asking the question that the club chose to sell him.

Here’s what people have had to say on Twitter…

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino needs to stop sending mixed messages

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Mauricio Pochettino came out with a bizarre statement following Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Asked about the impact of Tanguy Ndombele, the French midfielder who came on as a substitute and impressed, providing two key passes throughout his short cameo, Pochettino offered a puzzling answer.

He said: “A big difference? Doing what?”

The quote was quickly plastered across Twitter, going viral, leading to howls of derision from Spurs fans who felt this would knock Ndombele’s confidence.

The full quote, which must be examined, is not much better. After the reporter said, “his passes”, Pochettino replied: “Yes but in this time the game was different no? I think be careful how we assess. I was talking to some of your colleagues before the game.

“With 29 players in the squad, it’s so important to rotate and keep them all motivated to play. He played on Tuesday in the Champions League and I think Harry Winks was fresh to play.”

This smacks of trying to cover his team selection – Ndombele, of course, was on the bench – but it also speaks to a broken line of communication.

Pochettino has appeared to master English during his time managing in the Premier League but still we find these odd little idiosyncrasies.

In this case, he hasn’t thrown the player under the bus, but it speaks to a wider issue; what is the message at Spurs at this point?

In the summer, before the transfer window opened, Pochettino spoke of a need to undergo a “painful” rebuild. In the months following, of the first-team, only Kieran Trippier and Fernando Llorente left the club. Ndombele was one of a number of players brought in – Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke also came through the door – but there was no right-back bought to cover Trippier’s absence, while a striker was not recruited to fill the void left by Llorente.

That isn’t so much a rebuild as a lack of planning.

Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen could both have left, of course, with Rose close to a move to Watford and the Dane fluttering his eyelashes at Real Madrid and Barcelona but since then, they have both been reintegrated into the first-team, even despite some execrable form.

Following that, Pochettino told Spurs to change his job title from manager to head coach, while insisting he is not in charge of transfers. The 47-year-old, when he signed his new contract in 2018, had his title changed, or upgraded, from the latter to the former.

This Ndombele quote, then, is the problem in a microcosm. Fans are unsure what to expect from their manager at this point and it must be difficult for the players too.

Imagine how the club’s record signing would have felt seeing that quote plastered all over social media on Sunday night, having been one of Spurs’ best players at Anfield.

It is bizarre at best and genuinely worrying at worst; one thing is for sure though, and that is the fact that Pochettino needs to find some consistency in his message, otherwise everyone – those on the pitch and those in the stands alike – will be left wondering what he will come out with next.

Southampton fans are unmoved by James Ward-Prowse’s rallying comments

Southampton fans on Twitter are unmoved by James Ward-Prowse’s rallying comments, amid a tough time for the south coast side.Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side find themselves in the Premier League relegation zone with just eight points from 11 games, and have also conceded the most goals in the top-flight having picked the ball out of their net on 27 occasions.

The Saints academy graduate – who has been in the first-team since 2011 – scored Southampton’s goal in the recent 2-1 loss to Manchester City, a performance in which he responded emphatically to those who had criticised him.

Ward-Prowse’s rallying cry outlined how everyone at St Mary’s is united and pulling in the same direction, although some Southampton fans on Twitter aren’t having it.

One fan simply typed a string of Z’s as if to suggest they were yawning at Ward-Prowse’s comments, while another asked “how many times have we heard this sort of thing?”

Another supporter demanded less “waffle” and more guts.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction from the unmoved Southampton fans…

Lanzini’s injury offers Fornals a chance to establish himself at West Ham

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Injury News series, which considers the impact of the latest updates on players’ fitness.

Manuel Lanzini will be out for two months, after fracturing his collarbone during West Ham United’s 3-0 loss against Burnley, as reported by The Guardian.

Unfortunate for the 26-year-old

This is a massive blow for Lanzini, who has been an important player for the team at times this season.

He especially excelled at the beginning of the campaign when he assisted against Brighton & Hove Albion, before getting another against Watford and winning the penalty for Mark Noble’s opener.

The Argentinian had been fairly quiet in the last six games though, only starting twice, getting an assist in the loss against Newcastle United.

All of this follows a season in which he only managed to make 10 substitute appearances due to a cruciate ligament rupture, so to pick up another lengthy injury will be a massive blow.

Time for Pablo Fornals to step up

Fornals has been underwhelming since arriving in east London, starting 5 Premier League games so far, coming off the bench for 6, with no league goal contributions.

He has only got the ball in the back of the net once in claret and blue, with that coming in the Carabao Cup against Newport County.

The 23-year-old has struggled to show much of a creative presence at all in the league, managing just 0.5 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game.

Tony Cottee summed things up while speaking with FFC: “I’m concerned, obviously, because so far he’s really, really struggled with the pace of the Premier League.”

Lanzini plays a similar position to the Spaniard, so Fornals could get more chances to get on the pitch and show how useful he can be for the club while he is ruled out.

He needs to take this opportunity and begin to display the technique and ability that led West Ham to sign him in the first place.
