Murillo successor: Forest to hijack move for another Brazilian sensation

Nottingham Forest’s financial troubles have been well documented over the last couple of months, with the Reds hit with a four-point deduction after breaking the Premier League’s PSR rules.

Evangelos Marinakis splashed the cash after promotion to make the club competitive to avoid an immediate return to the Championship but overspent as a result of the Greek’s ambition at the City Ground.

For the 2022/23 financial year, the club overspent by £34.5m, despite the sale of academy graduate Brennan Johnson for £47.5m to Tottenham Hotspur – but it was completed after the deadline, which saw the Reds still breach the rules despite the big-money sale.

As a result, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will have to raise at least another £20m before the 30th of June, with Murillo linked with £60-70m moves to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

However, the Forest supporters shouldn’t worry, with the club targeting another Brazilian centre-back to fill the void should the talented youngster depart the City Ground this window.

Nottingham Forest interested in signing another Brazilian talent

According to Revista Colorada via Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest are set to hijack West Ham United’s deal for Brazilian centre-back Vitão this summer.

The 24-year-old Internacional defender, who is valued at £5.9m, as per Transfermarkt, has been subject to strong interest from Julen Lopetegui’s side this summer, but Forest could be set to swoop in and steal him from the Hammers’ clutches.

The report states that Nuno’s side could be set to offer a higher offer than West Ham, whilst also handing Vitão a higher wage to convince him to ditch London for the East Midlands.

Whilst no Reds supporter would want to lose Murillo after his Player of the Season campaign in 2023/24, but they would be signing an excellent replacement in Vitão should the 21-year-old leave during the off-season.

Why Vitão could be the perfect Murillo heir

Although they’re playing in vastly different quality divisions, the pair have produced very similar stats, as per FBref, with the Internacional talent having the ability to follow in Murillo’s footsteps at the City Ground.

Murillo

The two Brazilians both excel with the ball at their feet, with the current Reds defender completing nine more progressive carries during the 2023/24 campaign.

However, Vitão, who’s previously been dubbed as the “future of Brazilian football” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has achieved a better pass completion rate, finding a teammate on 52% of his attempted long passes – a tally 5% higher than Murillo despite the 21-year-old excelling with his passing ability in the Premier League.

Despite his success in possession the 24-year-old trails the Reds centre-back in terms of tackles won, with the youngster winning 8% more of the tackles he’s entered over the last 12 months.

Both have demonstrated their qualities in different divisions, but given his stats in his homeland this season, the more senior asset could be the ideal man to fill the void left by the £70m rated star.

With Forest desperately needing to raise funds this month, any deal for Murillo would be a phenomenal one – especially considering the club only paid £15m for his signature last summer.

Vitão would be a cheap replacement and one that would be able to make his mark on England’s top-flight, whilst also massively boosting the club’s current financial position.

Eddie Byrom resists for Somerset as autumn weather seizes the day

Essex seamers thrive in challenging conditions as Lord’s stages first first-class match of season

George Dobell23-Sep-2020Somerset 119 for 4 (Byrom 51*, Davies 19*) v EssexIt’s one of the great ironies of the season that the first-class competition should be named in honour of Bob Willis. While Willis was, without doubt, a passionate supporter of the game in England, he wasn’t necessarily a supporter of the county game. There were, he thought, too many first-class counties, playing too many games. He had long recommended a significant restructuring. So it may prove a fitting legacy if this year’s competition provides the precedent for change. Certainly it appears as if next year’s competition, which will be recognised as a county championship, is set to feature three conferences instead of the two divisions to which we have become accustomed over the last couple of decades. This final, and the Bob Willis Trophy, may well become a fixture of the summer. You suspect, however, that Willis would think such change did not go far enough. And as his face smiled down on Lord’s throughout much of the first day of this match – the scoreboards here featured a picture of him whenever rain intervened – you could almost imagine him passing judgement on what he saw. “Unacceptable, Charles. Of course it’s raining. It’s winter.”This was not, it must be admitted, a vintage day of cricket. Rain flirted throughout and the temperature was so low a polar bear wouldn’t go out without a muffler. And while this season of all seasons, it is hard to criticise – this competition has been an elegant solution to a horrendous challenge – the game has some thinking to do if it continues to plan for showpiece events at this time of year. We are, it might be remembered, still 10 days away from Finals Day at Edgbaston. That Somerset have a foothold in the game is largely due to Eddie Byrom. Perhaps, had the likes of James Hildreth been fit and Tom Banton available, Byrom might have missed out. He went into this match averaging 17 in the competition this season, after all, and with a top score of 30. He had not made a Championship half-century since June 2018.But here he looked compact, patient and, having played himself in, surprisingly fluent. After taking 25 balls to make his first 11 runs, he hit six fours in 17 balls as Aaron Beard, in particular, strayed just a little full and just a little towards the leg stump. His ninth four, the one which brought up his half-century – a glorious straight drive that flew back past Sam Cook – was the shot of the day. He resumes on day two just five short of career-best score against a first-class county; his two centuries have come against Cardiff MCCU and Bulawayo Metropolitan Tuskers.Essex will be the happier of the sides, though. While there was just a little assistance from the overcast conditions and this fresh surface – they are playing on the pitch last used for the 2019 Ashes Test; the one where Steve Smith sustained the blow to the neck from a Jofra Archer bouncer – it was relatively benign by comparison with many of the tracks used in the competition this season.Against an attack featuring Sam Cook and Jamie Porter, Somerset’s challenge will be no easier on day two. While neither are blessed with great pace, they bowl an immaculate line and length and, in conditions offering just a fraction of assistance, test the technique and temperament of any batsman. Here both men delivered six maidens each and conceded just over two an over. The pressure on the batsmen rarely relents. The best example of this came with the wicket of George Bartlett. Five maidens in succession saw Bartlett, with 12 runs from his first 46 balls, tempted by one outside off stump which he might have been best to let go. Instead he attempted a drive which resulted in an edge to first slip; Sir Alastair Cook made no mistake.By then, Sam Cook had already dismissed both openers. Tom Lammonby, playing across a full one which may have swung a fraction, fell to Cook’s third ball before Ben Green was bowled through the gate by one that may have come down the slope a little. That left Somerset in some trouble at 52 for 3, with Tom Abell’s promising innings ended by an outstanding catch by Essex keeper, Adam Wheater. Diving down the leg-side, Wheater clung on to the ball millimetres above the grass after it appeared to brush Abell’s glove and thigh on its way.”When me and Porter bowl in tandem we like to keep it tight,” Cook, who took his 100th first-class wicket with the dismissal of Lammonby, said later. “Especially on days where there might not be much assistance in the pitch.”It is important to build pressure through the run-rate and force the batter to make false shots. We set out to keep the run rate below 2.7 an over and we did that well.”Earlier Somerset had stuck with the side that secured their place in the final with victory at New Road, which meant no place for Dom Bess in his final match before departing for Yorkshire. Essex, meanwhile, recalled Nick Browne in place of Feroze Khushi. Bowling first was the obvious choice for either side winning the toss, with Tom Westley the lucky captain. After play, Ben Green reasoned that 250 was probably a par score. But you suspect that Essex batting line-up may think it is somewhere higher. Seven of this Essex side average in excess of 35 in first-class cricket; only one of those to have played more than 10 first-class games in the Somerset side averages even 33. Byrom has kept his side in the game, but they have some batting ahead of them if they are to give their admirable bowling attack a fighting chance.

Villa lodge bid for "huge talent" who could be better than Kellyman

Aston Villa have sold a couple of wonderful talents this week as Unai Emery’s hand was forced in order to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations by June 30.

Tim Iroegbunam left to join Everton, while Omari Kellyman has joined Chelsea in a deal which is worth around £19m to the Midlands side.

These sales could give the Spaniard some leeway in the transfer market, as he could look elsewhere in a bid to replace losing two youngsters of considerable ability.

Aston Villa make bid for French sensation

According to journalist Abdel Hamed (via Sport Witness), Villa have reportedly made a bid of around €5m (£4.2m) in order to try and sign Rennes youngster Mathis Lambourde this summer.

He is one of the finest talents at the French side, and Emery is showing no signs of slowing down as he looks to bring in more talent from abroad to bolster his squad.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Much will depend on the Ligue 1 side’s asking price for the 18-year-old, as a bid of just over £4m may fall at the first hurdle, but by doing this, the manager can gouge exactly how much Rennes will want for their player.

With Kellyman leaving recently, a move for Lambourde could see the Spanish forget all about the Englishman, as the current Rennes gem could be better.

Why Mathis Lambourde could be an upgrade on Omari Kellyman

Kellyman managed to make just six senior appearances for Villa and, despite his obvious talent, receiving a fee of £19m was one that Emery simply wasn’t going to refuse.

Aston Villa midfielder Omari Kellyman.

These funds could be redirected back into a move for Lambourde, who likes an interesting prospect to say the least.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has previously hailed the teenager as a “huge talent” and his form for the youth age groups at Rennes has been wonderful over the past two seasons.

In 34 games for the U19 and B teams, Lambourde has scored 16 goals – Kellyman, meanwhile, scored just 14 times in 45 games at youth level for Villa. This sort of form ensured he was given his first taste of senior action during the 2023/24 campaign, making three appearances for Rennes.

He even made his Europa League debut, impressing in a tie against Maccabi Haifa. He may have only played for 11 minutes, but the youngster looked sharp, taking two shots, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, winning three of his five ground duels and even making two tackles.

This cameo proved that he has the ability to perform at the highest level and perhaps a move to the Premier League could allow the teen to showcase his talents on a more regular basis.

Emery knows he has to strengthen his squad ahead of Champions League football next term, but adding in players such as Lambourde is vital, as he can develop into a truly world-class player if given the opportunity.

Much will depend on whether Rennes wish to sell, but if they do, he could be a strong investment for the future.
