Southampton: Francois Kamano could be a key signing

Southampton will undoubtedly enter the new season full of hope, after hero Ralph Hasenhüttl engineered a truly phenomenal turnaround that saw the Saints maintain a place in the Premier League. Indeed, failing to win any of their last five made the perhaps slightly more arduous than needed but that will not worry the Southampton fans, who look to push back towards the top of the table.

While Hasenhüttl certainly proved an inspired choice, he is no magician, whatever you Saints think! Clearly, he will need investment, or will likely face another hard-fought season battling relegation.

So, who could be on his way in then? Well, according to L’Equipe, Southampton are interested in Bordeaux’s Francois Kamano. The 23-year-old winger impressed vastly last season, chipping in with an impressive 10 league goals and an assist in 36 outings.

A brief glance at the stats make it instantaneously and abundantly clear as to why the Guinean is in demand. Frankly, Southampton lacked goals last season. James Ward-Prouse and Danny Ings topped their Premier League charts with seven goals each which cannot realistically be good enough in terms of long-term planning.

Kamano is known for his direct style and blistering pace, while WhoScored recognise his finishing and long-shots as significant attributes.

Indeed Southampton have both Redmond and Mohamed Elyounoussi competing for places, while Sofiane Boufal looks likely to return after his loan spell at Celta Vigo. Plenty of options, but a real lack of goal threat between them. With that in mind, Kamano certainly seems a sensible option.

The attacker is valued at £13.5m (per TrasferMarkt) and L’Equipe report a ‘satisfactory’ offer would be enough to entice a sale. Sevilla are also reportedly interested, but Kamano could represent a quality player for a reasonable price. They would undoubtedly be adding to their attacking armoury should they complete the signing

Saints fans, what have you heard of this proposed move? Does it excite you? Or is this one that will leave you feeling slightly flat? Comment below!

Stan Collymore thinks Manchester United have let Paul Pogba down

[ad_pod ]

In his column for The Mirror, Stan Collymore shared his thoughts on Paul Pogba’s situation at Manchester United.

The former Liverpool ace revealed that he wished he’d studied how his future teammates played before making the move to Anfield, as he struggled without midfielders who would play the ball over the top to him, whilst he also felt that he couldn’t run with the ball due to Steve McManaman’s presence.

Collymore suggested that Pogba may have thought twice about making the move to Old Trafford had he studied his future teammates, but felt the lure of a romantic return in a world-record transfer move may have been too much to turn down.

Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below…

Yet the Mirror columnist had another point to make; he thinks Pogba has been let down and pointed the finger at the Old Trafford club.

What did Collymore say?

The former Red wrote: “Imagine if Pogba had played with Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira alongside him – he’d be elevated to super world class.

“United have also let Pogba down by failing to sign the player or players who’d bring out the best in him.”

It’s the other way round!

United have let Pogba down? More like the other way round.

The France international made a mockery of the club by falling out with Jose Mourinho last season and then seemingly downing tools until the Portuguese’s departure – this was evidenced when he burst into form in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s early days and looked a completely different player.

The former Juventus man had also talked up a move to Real Madrid midway through the season, and came out yet again just last week to say that he fancied a new challenge ‘somewhere else’ – he has been utterly disrespectful to a club that bends over backwards for him more often than not.

The idea of needing to build around Pogba is nothing new and a common argument whenever top talents don’t perform consistently well. But there’s the other side to that coin too; why isn’t Pogba’s quality – which saw him lift the World Cup with France last summer – getting the best out of those around him?

Pogba is the one who has let United down – on the pitch, in public and behind the scenes.

Nuno philosophy would be hindered if Wolves sign Bahoken

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Only this week Kevin Thelwell confirmed that he didn’t expect there to be much movement in terms of transfers at Wolves this summer.

That is unlikely to make rumours of possible deals go away, however, and one player who may well still arrive is striker Stephan Bahoken.

Wolves mainly used just two forwards last term, opting for the mercurial Diogo Jota and ever reliable Raul Jimenez up top.

They scored a total of 22 Premier League goals between them as they had to shoulder the responsibility when it came to finding the net.

Helder Costa and Ivan Cavaleiro rarely provided much quality, scoring just four as a collective in the league.

The addition of another forward, therefore, could be extremely beneficial.

However if they are to do a deal for Bahoken, who has attracted their interest per L’Equipe, they’d be going wrong.

Why? Because he’d hinder their style of play significantly.

Nuno Santo has coached Wolves into becoming a fabulous counter-attacking side, using wing-backs and well-disciplined midfielders as a method of going forward.

The two strikers, Jota and Jimenez, have also been crucial to this but Bahoken has a prominent statistic that could end up proving detrimental for the Midlands outfit if they arrived.

In Ligue 1 last season the 27-year-old averaged 3.2 unsuccessful touches of the ball per game. In comparison, Jota’s stood at 2.3 whilst Jimenez’s was 2.5 on average.

Therefore, adding the Angers forward to their frontline could slow their counter-attacks down significantly.

Gareth Bale to Wolves? Wolves Fan TV discuss how ambitious Nuno Espirito Santo will be this summer in the video below…

If he’s losing the ball as much as his statistics prove, their play in possession of the ball would get worse.

In one game last campaign, he was unsuccessful with eight touches of the ball whilst there was another occasion where it happened seven times.

Bearing this in mind, he could prove to be hugely frustrating if he joins Wolves this summer.

The Cameroon international found the net 11 times in Ligue 1 in 2018/19, but it’s clear he has work to do in order to improve.

Juventus’ Moise Kean demand isn’t ideal, but it may be worth doing for Everton

[ad_pod ]

According to The Daily Mail, Juventus are happy to sell Moise Kean for a sum of £31m as Everton remain interested, although the Serie A champions will want to insert a £40.5m buy-back clause in any potential deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Toffees reportedly had a bid worth €30m (£26.9m) rejected for the Italy international, although it looks as if Juventus have set their stance out on the matter pretty clearly.

Kean shot to prominence last season with six goals in just five Serie A starts, whilst he also impressed at this summer’s European Championships with two goals in two appearances.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

The Turin-based side are happy to sell Kean as they think a £31m deal makes financial sense for them – sporting director Fabio Paratici is also said to be concerned about the 19-year-old’s character.

Buy-back clause hinders Everton, but it may be worth it

Of course, in this day and age, £31m for one of Europe’s brightest young talents is practically nothing.

The Merseysiders would be getting an precocious talent who has already proven that he can find the back of the net when given the opportunity for game time, and it would also help solve the problem that is the lack of a quality striker.

Marco Silva has just Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to choose from in attack, who scored a combined nine league goals – that simply isn’t good enough.

Kean would assumingly come in and perform well in an environment that has coaxed a high standard of performance out of young players already, such as Richarlison, Jordan Pickford and Lucas Digne.

However, the buy-back clause of just £40.5m is also nothing in the modern market, and would hardly be ideal for Everton as Juventus could buy him back for a snip – no matter how well he does at Goodison Park.

It would restrict their ability to get the most out of their long-term investment. Who knows how much Kean could be worth next summer if he is able to command a fee of £31m after just one season in Juventus’ first-team?

His value could absolutely sky rocket, although Everton would always be hindered by the knowledge that one club can have him for a bargain fee.

It might just be worth it though, in exchange for a few years of quality striking service.

Leeds fans worried as Kalvin Phillips is left out of friendly squad

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are worried about the future of Kalvin Phillips at the club after he wasn’t named in the squad for the Whites’ first friendly of the season against York City.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with Aston Villa for the past few weeks, and United supporters believe that this is a sign that he will be leaving the club this summer.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side didn’t end up missing Phillips on Wednesday as they ran out 5-0 winners, but the Whites would certainly miss him in the Championship after he made the EFL’s Team of the Season last term.

The Yorkshire outfit have another pre-season friendly against Guiseley on Thursday evening, but it remains to be seen whether or not the defensive midfielder will feature there or not.

Phillips hasn’t yet left the club, but the fanbase now believe it is just a matter of time after this latest development.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Leeds should experiment with Roofe and Bamford, says Whelan

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has urged Leeds to experiment with two of their forward players heading into the new season.

What’s he said?

As Leeds embark on their mini pre-season tour of Australia, two members of the squad who could find themselves vying for the same spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s side are Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford.

The former has been linked with a move away but is among the travelling party for pre-season despite the likes of Helder Costa and Jack Clarke missing out.

Both Roofe and Bamford started together against York in the Whites’ friendly last week and it’s a tactic that has sparked Whelan into urging Leeds to experiment with the pair.

Talking to Football Insider, he revealed how they could do it, commenting:

“This is where you experiment, isn’t it? We didn’t see it much last season because of injuries to the two of them.

“This is where you figure out what you’re going to play, what formation. I very much doubt he’s going to change his thinking but can you put Kemar Roofe in a number 10? That’s something worth thinking about, can he play behind Bamford and play off him?”

Can they do it?

Last season Leeds were extremely unfortunate to lose Bamford for such a lengthy period of time. Per Transfermarkt, he missed 22 games through injury whilst Roofe was forced to sit on the treatment table for six matches too.

As a result, the pair of them failed to actually play alongside each other on too many occasions.

Yet, if Leeds can get both of them fit and firing properly next term it will without a doubt ensure they have a better chance of achieving promotion.

In 2018/19, Tyler Roberts and Mateusz Klich were preferred behind the striker but, as Whelan says, this is the ideal time to now experiment with what they’ve got.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The fact only 16 squad members have travelled to Australia means there should be a greater license to play the pair of them together, and experimenting with Roofe in behind Bamford could be on the cards given Klich hasn’t travelled.

It could also prepare them for a potential departure if the Pole joins Burnley, a club he was the subject of interest from over the weekend.

Roofe scored 15 goals last term, cementing himself as one of the biggest threats in the side.

Moving him from his favoured position up front could seem foolish on paper, but if it gets both him and Bamford scoring at the same time, it could be game-changing for Bielsa.

Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate proves he could solve defensive crisis

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson suggested after the 6-2 pre-season defeat against Barnet on Tuesday that the Eagles have something of a defensive crisis right now, but they may already have one solution to the issue in the form of Cheikhou Kouyate.

The former England boss seem wholly concerned with his comments following the loss against the National League club, saying via Sky Sports: “We’ve got enormous problems at the back at the moment.

“We really don’t have any defenders, to speak of. Aaron’s gone and we’ve got three others injured.”

That isn’t exactly what you want to hear with just over three weeks until the new Premier League season gets underway – especially as the south London outfit have been perennial poor starters having taken just 13 points in total from their opening 12 top flight fixtures in both 2017/18 and 2018/19.

A signing to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka looks like a must, but it is the issues at the heart of the backline that are perhaps most worrying for the Selhurst Park faithful.

Watch Crystal Palace Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins have formed a strong partnership there previously, and it looked as though positive news could be on the horizon when the duo were named in the travelling party for the pre-season trip to Switzerland having both been injured at the end of the previous campaign.

However, neither made the matchday squad for the matches against FC Luzern or Young Boys, which suggests they are the injured defenders Hodgson mentioned.

Meanwhile, Kouyate has been representing Senegal at the 2019 African Cup of Nations, helping them reach the final where they will face Algeria on Friday night.

The 29-year-old didn’t actually start the opening group match against Tanzania, but an early injury to Salif Sane means that he has played every minute since – all at centre-back.

And while it may not be a completely alien position to him, he has impressed with the Lions of Teranga only conceding one goal – ironically against Algeria in the group stage – on their way to the final.

As you can see from the graphic above, the former West Ham United man has recorded some impressive defensive stats along the way, including making 1.5 tackles per game as well as winning an average of 2.5 aerial duels, as per WhoScored.

Those numbers show that he could do a job at centre-half in the Premier League for Crystal Palace if Sakho and Tomkins aren’t fit anytime soon, and one other number in particular sticks out.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Sakho has become well known for his ability to bring the ball out of defence and play long balls – 2.2 per game in the top flight in 2018/19 – which is crucial when you have the pace that the Eagles do in attack with the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend.

The fact that Kouyate has averaged 3 per game at the AFCON suggests he has the same ability in his locker, and is just another reason why he could help solve the club’s defensive crisis effectively when he returns from his extended break.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replies to Alexandre Lacazette’s Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are a truly inseparable duo at Arsenal, both on and off the pitch, it seems.

Whenever one posts something on their

/B0EozI9o8A6/” data-lasso->social media accounts, the other is extremely quick to reply and either rinse his friend or share some great messages of support.

It’s safe to say the attacking tandem of the Gunners is really getting along, and for that reason, it was not really surprising to find Aubameyang’s response in Lacazette’s comment section under his latest Instagram snap.

The Frenchman shared a photo with some of Olympique Lyon’s players after the Emirates Cup game and it seems that Aubameyang got a bit jealous.

The pacy forward from Gabon commented that he won’t even like the photo, which is probably because he’s not in it with them. But after a while, he posted a second reply saying that he’ll make the effort of liking it after all since it is for his “brother”.

The attacking duo scored 50 goals between them last term, but it wasn’t enough to help their club secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, or a trophy with the nearest they cam being their Europa League final defeat to Chelsea.

Five things we have learned from Crystal Palace’s pre-season so far

[long_read]

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have had little to shout about this summer, with star defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka securing a big-money move to Manchester United and their pre-season fixtures doing enough to be a cause for concern.

The Eagles succumbed to a 6-2 defeat at Barnet before being edged out by Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 loss next time out. They’ve even drawn with Wimbledon.

There have been no major signings worth shouting about, while the uncertainty regarding Wilfried Zaha’s status as a Palace player continues.

The Eagles have just one pre-season fixture remaining as they welcome Hertha Berlin before their campaign begins at home to Everton – by which time Roy Hodgson will have had ample time to assess and prepare his side.

The former England boss will have been keeping a keen eye on his squad for the past month or so and so have we.

Here’s five things we’ve learned so far…

[snack_break title=”Palace will struggle without Zaha, £80m or not”]

Another transfer window means more rumours and reports regarding Zaha’s future at Selhurst Park, although this time the winger added fuel to the fire when he stated his desire to leave SE25 back in May.  The speedy number 11 hasn’t featured in red and blue since the final-day thriller, having been on AFCON duty with Ivory Coast, and Palace fans may have seen the last of him.

Sky Sports understand that the 26-year-old reaffirmed his plans to leave upon returning from international duty and that Arsenal could return with an improved offer soon, although Palace, who value the player at £80m, are under no pressure to sell.

Should the Eagles talisman indeed find a way to the Emirates Stadium this summer, it’s even clearer now that Palace will miss him dearly – the clunky combos of Alexander Sorloth, Connor Wickham and Christian Benteke have offered Hodgson little up front in pre-season, netting just twice between them.

Zaha is pivotal to Palace’s success and his exit would demand a complete reconfiguration of both personnel and system thereafter – they lack pace and flair on the counter, where they are at their best, without him.

[snack_break title=”Hodgson’s in-game inflexibility”]

Last term, the 72-year-old’s unwillingness to make substitutions – positive or negative – until it was too late often cost Palace, with it taking too long for the Eagles to stage their typical, late comeback.

Surely this can’t be a concern in pre-season, when managers are most inclined to rotate and give some of the fringe players a chance, right?

Well, the Premier League’s oldest boss declined to make a single change in the loss to Nottingham Forest, despite promising forward James Daly, Jairo Riedewald and Wickham being sat on the bench.

Of course, Hodgson isn’t exactly getting the investment into the team he would surely like but making zero subs in any game which you are losing is inexcusable.

[snack_break title=”Defensive reinforcements needed”]

Wan-Bissaka’s departure has undoubtedly shot a hole in Palace’s defence although the fact that the Eagles have kept just one clean clean sheet and conceded 12 goals in six games cannot be put down to one sale, solely.

Martin Kelly and Scott Dann look shaky and Patrick van Aanholt’s ineptitude on the back foot has long been apparent. Hodgson bemoaned a lack of defensive options in his post-Barnet interview and with good reason it would seem.

With James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho both working their way back to fitness, Palace’s back-line is looking far, far weaker with around two weeks of the summer transfer window left. Will Hodgson get the signings he’s after?

[snack_break title=”Max Meyer means business”]

The diminutive German signed for the Eagles last summer and managed just 15 league starts in his maiden Premier League campaign, with Hodgson largely preferring James McArthur in midfield, although he is hoping to stake a real claim in the side in 2019/20.

The 23-year-old told Palace’s official website:

“Last season was my first season in a new country and league, and I think the second year will be even better. I hope so: more goals, more assists, more points as a team.”

Having chalked up just two goals and two assists in all competitions last term, the nippy number 7 is targeting an improvement in both tallies this season and the signs that he will do just that have been there in pre-season.

He teed up Benteke for the opener against Luzern, beating his man with a tidy bit of skill before deftly crossing to his big teammate at the back stick, who, for once, couldn’t miss.

[snack_break title=”Finishing still a problem”]

Last term, the Eagles often created enough chances to bury teams but would fail to take any, before their opponents got the ball down the other end and scored a winner – the January arrival of Michy Batshuayi solved the lack of a clinical forward, with the Belgian netting five league goals in nine starts.

The former Marseille man has returned to Stamford Bridge now, though, leaving Dougie Freedman and Steve Parish with the task of finding another top goalscorer, with the shortcomings of the current striker crop being exposed in the defeat to Forest.

Centre-back Dann was frustrated by the side’s inability to put away the plethora of chances they had in the second half, telling Palace’s official website:

“That second half, I thought we were much better. To create so many chances in the second half and not put them away is probably the most disappointing thing.”

Bringing Batshuayi back to Selhurst Park or finding another number 9 capable of shouldering the goalscoring burden is a priority, although the clock is ticking.

Man United star Pogba proves exactly how much Red Devils would miss him

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Despite the transfer window closing in the Premier League last Thursday, there remains a possibility Paul Pogba could still leave Manchester United. The Frenchman has been courted by the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus all summer, and with the deadline in other major European leagues still some time away, there are no guarantees the 26-year-old will stay at Old Trafford.

On Sunday afternoon though, with the world watching the Red Devils’ highly-anticipated clash against top-six rivals Chelsea, Pogba came to the fore.

The France World Cup winner appeared to put the speculation to one side and helped run the show for United in the middle of the park. The performance wasn’t without its occasional faults, but there was no doubting the former Juventus star appeared to embrace just being back on the pitch.

Sitting alongside Scott McTominay in a deeper-lying midfield two, Pogba was the architect behind many of United’s thrilling counter-attacks. The forwards rather understandably took all the limelight with their scintillating pace, but it was the Red Devils’ maverick star who kick-started moves with his powerful running and intelligent passing.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

His two assists were so remarkably different that they highlighted the very diverse talents Pogba has to offer. His sumptuous pass over the top for Marcus Rashford to latch on to and fire home was a thing of beauty. His role in the side’s fourth goal was equally brilliant, but this time it was his marauding run forward and weighted through ball to Daniel James that caught the eye.

In total, the Frenchman made four key passes as United dominated proceedings in the second-half. His 77.4% pass accuracy was nothing to write home about, and he was sometimes caught in possession as Chelsea looked to press the ball, but it was his willingness to receive the ball in dangerous areas and try more difficult things to help his team that resulted in him losing out on occasion.

Losing a midfielder like Pogba in the remaining weeks of the window would rob United of someone who has shown he can be more than a lynch-pin. His range of passing, driving runs and ability to cover the ground easily marks him out as a unique option in the Red Devils’ squad. Make no mistake about it, the 26-year-old’s display against Chelsea showed exactly what Solskjaer’s side could miss out on, were he to leave.
